Anyplace that has 2 for 1 screwdrivers at 11am on a Monday is alright by me. So what if it's well vodka in a plastic jug and quite possibly Tang instead of actual OJ... you love it. Definitely tops on my list of return visits next time I find myself back in the Twin Cities.

The Otter Saloon is that trashy dive bar that has some odd unexplainable pull. They keep the door wide open on hot days, so cigarette smoke comes right in, the male bartender is constantly in a terrible mood, and the karaoke singers screech so much that your ears want to fall off...and yet, people keep wanting to come back anyway. I'm one of those people. There must be something about the eclectic crowd that lures me in. The Otter Saloon has prime time "people watching" since every kind of person comes here to sing their hearts out and they take it very seriously too. They have a huge book of karaoke songs, so whether you're looking for the newest hits or oldies, there will be something to tickle your fancy. Even if you're not the type of person to get up and sing, the audience here is very lively. The male bartender is a cranky fella, but the female bartender makes the best vodka lemonades (there's always only 1 bartender behind the counter when I'm there). Come for the cheap drinks and stay for the show...karaoke every night is a fun way to spend your time, no matter what night of the week it is!

A Tale of Two Otters I've been to the Otter a couple of times, with about eight or nine years between visits. The heart of the Otter hasn't changed - it's friendly, cramped to the point of almost not being able to move on a weekend night, affordable, and you're going to have to wait like, two hours to sing no matter what. The song book is large and the host seems democratic - if you put your name in you'll come up in order. Things that have evolved: it's no longer going by the far-superior name of "U Otter Stop Inn" and there are now video screens with a rolling crawler that tells you the next five people on deck to sing and gives the song of the person coming next to avoid any confusion between name doppelgängers. I love the divey vibe and the fact that there's a camera mounted over the lyric screen for the performers so you can see your buds sing in all their glory - from a distance, that is, because there's no way your group is going to be able to push to the front since it's wall-to-wall people. There's only one entrance to the Otter, but blessedly there is a backdoor exit at the end of the bar so you can easily make your escape once you've paid your tab. I'll always call this place the Otter Stop, and I definitely think you otter stop in next time you're out and about in Northeast.

My family and I are long time Local Fans. We often swing by before seeing a show at the Orpheum,…read moresuch a fun tradition. We went this last week with a large group before a show and had another great experience. We didn't make any sort of reservation and they were able to seat us right away. Staff were very friendly and flexible with our group needs. We also enjoyed a great variety of foods and beverages. The table loves the fish and chips as well as the whiskey bites.

The interior has that classic vintage pub feel with lots of character and natural light. There are tons of booths and different seating areas that could accommodate parties of all sizes. I especially liked the glass dividers between some of the booths, which give you a little extra privacy without making the space feel closed off. My booth also had coat hooks and easy access to outlets, which I appreciated. I could definitely see myself coming here for a working lunch. My server was incredibly friendly and helpful, especially as I was trying to figure out how to use a couple of rewards I had on my account. I specifically came in wanting to try the fish and chips. Their lunch menu offers smaller portions of several dishes from the dinner menu, including a fish and chips option for around $15. I really wanted to try the walleye, though, so I ended up ordering the full dinner portion for around $28. The fish was absolutely the star of the plate. The breading was fantastic--crunchy around the edges while still light and fluffy--and the fish inside practically melted in my mouth. The tartar sauce was also really good and paired perfectly with it. The sides, unfortunately, didn't impress me nearly as much. There were plenty of fries, but they were pretty average, and the coleslaw was mostly cabbage with a light dressing. It felt like it was missing some acidity or lime to give it a little more personality. For almost $30, I also expected the meal to be a bit more substantial. I left satisfied, but found myself hungry again a couple of hours later, so I'm not sure the dinner portion felt worth the price for me. If you're mainly curious about their fish and chips, I'd probably recommend trying the smaller lunch portion first rather than committing to the more expensive dinner version. Would I come back? Absolutely--the atmosphere, service, and location alone make The Local worth another visit, and I noticed several other dishes on the menu I'd be interested in trying. I just don't know that I'd order this particular meal again. The fish itself was excellent, but for me, the sides and overall value didn't quite match it.

It always surprises me how many places that I love going to, I have not reviewed…read more And this is one of these places. I love coming here for music. They have three rooms where things happen. The main room (aka Mattson Room) has a great wood dance floor and you'll see things happening here in the afternoon (line dancing, square dancing, etc) and then bands rocking out in the evening. The 2nd room, is the medium size room. Here too I've seen all sorts of great bands play and it too has room to throw down your dance moves or just rock out. The 3rd room. Wow. This room is tiny and it is where the metal bands play. It is loud and it'll melt your face. They also offer food and drinks are way cheap. We'll come here to watch Vikings games. They have both a kitchen that offers salads and burgers, and the traditional bar frozen pizza. You're not getting a Heggies here but you will get a Jakeeno's. In the Twin Cities, this is the only place I know serving up this variety. You need a place to watch a Vikes game or the Wild? This is the place. Drink specials during Vikes games too!

I came there with my Sister that is legally blind And has to speak louder because she's hearing impaired.. And my Sister met a man there later whom she has never met before, that ended up a very rude and quite loud and obnoxious person when he kept drinking alcohol! Myself and my date was a witness to his behavior that sprung out of control! He was getting too fresh with my Sister that kept pushing his hands away! He kept using cuss words! And yelling where's that bartender? And I would say to him if you want a drink? Go to the bar yourself these two bartenders have been working so hard in this heat all day long!! Well he didn't like that and started screaming at me! I then told the man that it's not the bartenders job to come to the table .. It's his responsibility to go ask for his own drink of choice, He grew more angry at me for no reason then he got our bartender Joy involved and was making things up that I had never said? I don't even know this man.. My Sister was just texting with him for a couple months on some date site.. And asked him if he wanted to meet her.. He came to the bar and seemed really hyper.. My Sister.. my date and I were still very respectful and nice to the man until he sprung out of control, And because all of that took place my Sister, date and I were asked to leave because Joy the bartender didn't want any more loudness.. We respected that and I was about to go get my Sister and date and let them know that we have to leave the bar .. and just when I was about to go get my Sister at our table... That man came back to see my Sister at the table! I thought that security asked him to leave? But he came back to to try to talk to my Sister.. I wasn't at the table so I didn't hear what he had said, Neither did my Sister or my date because he was screaming! When that man had walked away from the table he came right up to me real close and looked like he was very angry.. I didn't say anything and I went to our table and took my Sister by the hand and walked out the door.. I can't believe the man that started the feud wasn't asked to leave also? It was a very sad and shocking night for my Sister, My Date and I .. We never have been treated so disrespectfully ever at any place of business!!

I love the karaoke stage, the vibes, and the divey-ness. If you go on a weeknight or before 10pm, you're likely to have a better experience. Unfortunately, in the past year or so it has been taken over by the college age folks and this last time we went, you couldn't even move by 10pm. I've never seen it that crowded! Service was (understandably) slow, and I know this is sometimes how it works, but the karaoke guy was taking bribes so our names on the list kept getting pushed back. I tend to like a karaoke bar where folks in the crowd are listening (at least a little), singing along, or clapping at the end. That wasn't the vibe here - it felt like a college bar where people were scream-talking to each other and people were singing on the stage as an afterthought. It lost a bit of its luster for me this last time I visited, and I'm sad to say I may not be back in the near future. I loved this spot in my 20s - maybe it's time for me to find a 30s dive bar instead :)
