The fam and I were cruising through Summerville on our way to Charleston, stomachs growling. Yelp whispers sweet nothings about Oscar's, so we figure, why not? Let's give this place a shot. Now, before we even stepped foot in the restaurant, we hit a little snag. I called to make a reservation, and the hostess must have been in the middle of some serious juggling act because she hung up on me. Twice. Yep, not once, but twice. Clearly, someone needs a refresher course in customer service. On the third try, I finally got through to someone else who, thankfully, wasn't auditioning for a role as "The Great Disconnector." This person was pleasant, polite, and actually took our reservation without any drama. Crisis averted! When we finally walked in, we were greeted by an ambiance that was all class and elegance. Think dark wood paneling, soft lighting, and that warm, candlelit glow that makes everyone look like they're in a romantic movie. It's the kind of place where your Charleston grandma might favor for a special night out, with a vibe that's both classic and upscale. You half expect to see her there, sipping a glass of Chardonnay, dishing out life advice. My husband and I started with red wine and appetizers. Being from Maryland, where crabs are practically our state mascot, we decide to test the waters with the crab fritters and fried calamari. Now, I don't know what I was expecting, but those crab fritters had me thinking, "Is this really crab or did someone sneak in some imitation for a laugh?" Calamari was decent, but it didn't exactly make me want to stand up and do a jig. My son, the true crab fanatic, dove headfirst into the red crab appetizer with melted butter for his main dish. And you know what? The kid LOVED it--so much so that he ordered a second round! That's right, folks, Oscar's managed to impress a Maryland crab snob! My other son, not to be outdone, played it safe with chicken fingers and fries. He gave them three and a half stars. He is a hard one to please. Now, let's talk about my husband's pan-seared halibut with garlic risotto. If there's one thing I learned from his dish, it's that Oscars doesn't mess around when it comes to garlic. This wasn't just garlic-forward; it was garlic front, center, and coming up behind you like a stealthy ninja. My husband could have warded off a whole clan of vampires after that meal. As for me, I decided to try the bbq pork shank appetizer as my main course. It was nicely presented and pretty tasty. But the true star of the evening? Our server, Michael. This guy was on point--prompt, friendly, and the kind of server who makes you feel like you're the most important table in the joint. Michael, if you're reading this, you're the real MVP. So, would we hit up Oscar's again? Eh, maybe if we're ever back in Summerville and craving some more garlic adventures. We're giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. My husband and I just moved here four months ago, and have been trying to find good, local restaurants (without necessarily needing to drive downtown). We decided to try this place for my birthday tonight, even though the prices were a little high for this area. I couldn't have been happier! The ambiance is comfortable and classy, the food phenomenal. The maitre'd wasn't terribly enthusiastic, but that might have been because it was a Tuesday night, with "Wing Night" in full swing on the bar side of the establishment. The waiter appeared to be new, as he stumbled a bit over things, but again ... Tuesday. His suggestion on a glass of Reisling was spot on. We shared the crab cake and fried green tomato appetizer, which was tasty enough, although we both agreed there was a 'bottom note' missing. I thought more of the chili remoulade would have done the trick. For dinner, my husband got the filet mignon, which was fabulous. I got the Chicken Chausser, which was also amazing. Even the vegetables that came on the side -- mashed potatoes, broccoli, baby carrots -- were perfectly done, fully cooked but still firm and tasty. For dessert we shared a slice of New York cheesecake. We are cheesecake snobs of a sort -- and this one satisfied! Made on site, the texture and taste were amazing, and the fruit coulis a nice counterpoint. My husband would have preferred a more robust coffee blend to balance the sweetness of the cheesecake, but that's a minor point. Overall, we would definitely go back, although probably just for special occasions based on the price. read more

The service was great, and the food was AMAZING! And the price, while more than Applebee's or whatever, was really not bad for the quality of food. It really surprised me because with it nestled right between the Pggly Wiggly and the gas station, I expected it to be some kinda greasy burger joint. But it was really cute; candles and mirrors and classical music. I wanted to kiss the chef - my dish was some sort of crab chicken potato thing and it looked like it came straight from the pages of some fancy food magazine, and just was so incredibly tender and full of flavor. The only drawback (the reason I took away a star) was there was some private event going on, and their very bad karaoke or whatever it was really should have been contained. I don't know if a door was open that shouldn't have been, or if it was just turned up WAY too loud - but I really wish I didn't have to be assaulted with the same guy poorly singing song after song the whole way through our dinner. Really killed the atmosphere! I think they could have asked the party to quiet down a little, for the benefit of their many other guests. read more

I am deeply disappointed and saddened by the behavior of the general manager, April, during my recent visit to Oscar in Summerville. April approached our table to inform us that some ladies at another table complained that the back of the restaurant was loud. Notably, all the customers in the back were Black, which made her comment seem blatantly racist. Our waiter, Adam, was unaware of the complaint and apologized for the situation, indicating this wasn't a concern for the staff until April made it an issue. What should have been a great dinner with friends ended in disaster and shame. April never returned to address the situation, leaving us feeling disrespected and unwelcome. I will never spend my money at a place that doesn't appreciate or respect me as a customer. I am extremely disappointed by the way the general manager handled the situation and I have requested the owner to call me to discuss this further. This incident has ruined what was supposed to be an enjoyable evening, and I strongly advise others to think twice before dining at Oscar in Summerville. read more

Three to five times a year our group of anywhere between six and 14 meet at Ocsar's to celebrate a birthday ( 65 and above ). We are served by Kelvin and he is wonderful every time. He makes us feel like he is always happy to see us. He is professional but always so nice we feel special. We met there today and it was the same again. I just wanted Oscar's to know what a great person he is and how lucky they are to have him. We always think of Oscar's for a special occasion. However, Kelvin is not the only special employee at Oscar's. Today, one of our ladies had an incident in the parking lot. She stepped wrong and hit the pavement. A young Sir Galahad named Mike was there to help, even sacrificing his coat to make it easier for her to get up. He was fantastic. We were very impressed with him and pleased with his willingness to help us. Thanks Kelvin and Mike and thanks Oscar's for your great employees. My family and I visited Oscar's tonight and it was outstanding! My wife and I have not been there in close to 20 years as we always forget about the place. I can assure you it will not be another 20 years before we return! All of us had an amazing experience and Ashley was such a sweetheart of a waitress. She did an awesome job and we hope to see her again when we return. The food was wonderful and the desserts were sinfully great! We had the calamari for an appetizer. Then for the entrees, my wife had the chicken Oscar, our oldest son had the king cut prime rib, our youngest had the frutti di mare, and I had the braised lamb shank. Everything was cooked perfectly and was extremely filling, but we still left room for those sinful desserts! We look forward to our next meals as we intend to try each and everything on the menu! We were a party of 8, and Kelvin took exceptional care of us, exemplifying impeccable politeness, courtesy, and seamless control of the room. He expedited our drinks, presented us with daily specials, and ensured our orders were placed promptly. The wait time for our food was remarkably brief, no more than 10-15 minutes. For appetizers, we ordered the fried green tomatoes, fried calamari, and two of us indulged in Oscar's shecrab soup, which was rich, meaty, and full of flavor, with a hint of cinnamon. My entree, the shrimp and grits with cheese sauce, bacon bits, and green onions, was nothing short of phenomenal. My coworkers' dishes, including the fried chicken salad, salmon salad, NY ribeye, grilled pork chop, and stuffed flounder, were all truly exceptional. Chefs kiss 5 stars! read more

An Unpleasant Dining Experience: Surprising Credit Card Fees During a recent dining experience, I was unpleasantly surprised to find an unexpected charge on my bill. As I handed the server my credit card for payment, I noticed an additional $3.20 charge for credit card processing. When I questioned the manager, they claimed it was standard practice and blamed the credit card company, despite the fact that it was not. Instead of adding hidden fees within the bill, businesses should consider adjusting prices to better accommodate their guests. The server directed me to the bottom of the receipt as the only place where the fee was mentioned, however that was after the fact I already paid.. Unfortunately, this experience has left me feeling frustrated and disappointed, and I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

WOW! An wonderful foodie experience. The plating is beautiful, seasonings spot on, harmony of the ingredients on the salmon plate was everything a 5 star restaurant has to offer. When you go ask to be seated at Tammy's table. Tammy is a delightful waitress. Her personality is bubbly and friendly. She will round out your dining experience with a recommendation of a 5 star dessert. The food is a little high but well worth every penny. You may want to make a reservation. We popped in without a reservation and wanted about 20 minutes. When you go to Charleston make Oscar's a MUST dining experience. It is a little out of the way but easy to find. My family and I went to Oscar's to celebrate my birthday which is on valentines weekend. We did not have a reservation but we were accommodated quickly by the hostesses. I did not get their names, but they were super nice and kind. The entire staff was absolutely amazing. Our waiter, Mitch was great! He was patient and kind and courteous. Even when one of our orders came out wrong, he took full responsibility and fix the situation promptly. Service was top notch! And the food! The service was very slow, the portions we very small, the food was over priced and was not that good. The place is over priced and over rated. I would not waste your time eating at this place. Since we were waiting so long for our food the girl stated we could have bread with our meal and she brought out 3 very small rolls, they were not hot or that good. Wife and I received a wedding gift certificate for Oscar's and have a steady customer since 2007. Our favorite waiter is Kelvin. He is very attentive to your needs. We have been there enough that Kelvin will have a table set for us. Had a Adult Grill Cheese on 1-9-16, and it was great. Wish they would bring back the Club Sandwich and the Fried Green Tomato BLT.
