We chose Oscar's to celebrate my partner's 49th birthday after hearing so many great things about this local Summerville staple. As a pescatarian family, the menu seemed like a great fit, and we were looking forward to a special dining experience. Unfortunately, the evening fell well short of expectations. We originally had a 6:30 PM reservation and called an hour ahead to move it to 6:45 PM, which the hostess graciously accommodated. We checked in at 6:37 PM but weren't seated until roughly 20 minutes later, while watching other arriving parties be seated. When we were finally taken to our table, the location felt more makeshift than reserved and didn't provide the ambiance we expected for a special occasion. We asked for bread early because we had hungry children with us, but it didn't arrive until after our appetizers and entrées had begun coming out. When it did arrive, it was cold and poorly sliced. Our appetizers--the crab fritters and crawfish tails--were also disappointing in presentation. The crawfish tails were simply scattered over shredded lettuce, and the four crab fritters were placed plainly on the plate without the presentation I would expect at this price point. Unfortunately, the entrées didn't recover the experience. The seafood burrito, although recommended by our server, arrived room temperature. The crab cake entrée was overwhelmingly breading rather than crab and ultimately went uneaten. The manager did come over, listened to our concerns, and graciously offered a replacement, which we appreciated, but by then my partner had eaten from the rest of our meals and was full. Server was kind and patient, but there were noticeable gaps in attentiveness. My son was halfway through his chicken tenders and fries before we had an opportunity to request ketchup. I also asked to substitute risotto for the rice with my entrée and was told the substitution was fine, but I wasn't informed there would be an additional charge until seeing it on the bill. Perhaps the most disappointing part was that this reservation was specifically made to celebrate a birthday, yet there was no acknowledgment of the occasion until we mentioned it ourselves. The birthday was noted in our OpenTable reservation, so that detail apparently didn't make it to the service team. Overall, I'd rate our experience a 5/10. Our server was pleasant and the manager was receptive when a concern was brought to her attention, but the combination of the delayed seating, missed birthday acknowledgment, food temperature, lackluster presentation, slow touchpoints, and unexpected substitution charge made what we hoped would be a memorable birthday dinner memorable for the wrong reasons. With Oscar's reputation in Summerville, we genuinely expected more. I'm sharing this not simply as a complaint, but in hopes that the feedback is received constructively. There are too many wonderful dining options in the area, and when guests specifically choose your restaurant for a milestone celebration, the details--from reservation notes and seating to food temperature, presentation, and attentiveness--really do matter. read more

The fam and I were cruising through Summerville on our way to Charleston, stomachs growling. Yelp whispers sweet nothings about Oscar's, so we figure, why not? Let's give this place a shot. Now, before we even stepped foot in the restaurant, we hit a little snag. I called to make a reservation, and the hostess must have been in the middle of some serious juggling act because she hung up on me. Twice. Yep, not once, but twice. Clearly, someone needs a refresher course in customer service. On the third try, I finally got through to someone else who, thankfully, wasn't auditioning for a role as "The Great Disconnector." This person was pleasant, polite, and actually took our reservation without any drama. Crisis averted! When we finally walked in, we were greeted by an ambiance that was all class and elegance. Think dark wood paneling, soft lighting, and that warm, candlelit glow that makes everyone look like they're in a romantic movie. It's the kind of place where your Charleston grandma might favor for a special night out, with a vibe that's both classic and upscale. You half expect to see her there, sipping a glass of Chardonnay, dishing out life advice. My husband and I started with red wine and appetizers. Being from Maryland, where crabs are practically our state mascot, we decide to test the waters with the crab fritters and fried calamari. Now, I don't know what I was expecting, but those crab fritters had me thinking, "Is this really crab or did someone sneak in some imitation for a laugh?" Calamari was decent, but it didn't exactly make me want to stand up and do a jig. My son, the true crab fanatic, dove headfirst into the red crab appetizer with melted butter for his main dish. And you know what? The kid LOVED it--so much so that he ordered a second round! That's right, folks, Oscar's managed to impress a Maryland crab snob! My other son, not to be outdone, played it safe with chicken fingers and fries. He gave them three and a half stars. He is a hard one to please. Now, let's talk about my husband's pan-seared halibut with garlic risotto. If there's one thing I learned from his dish, it's that Oscars doesn't mess around when it comes to garlic. This wasn't just garlic-forward; it was garlic front, center, and coming up behind you like a stealthy ninja. My husband could have warded off a whole clan of vampires after that meal. As for me, I decided to try the bbq pork shank appetizer as my main course. It was nicely presented and pretty tasty. But the true star of the evening? Our server, Michael. This guy was on point--prompt, friendly, and the kind of server who makes you feel like you're the most important table in the joint. Michael, if you're reading this, you're the real MVP. So, would we hit up Oscar's again? Eh, maybe if we're ever back in Summerville and craving some more garlic adventures. We're giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Oscar's, you did good, but let's work on that customer service on the phone --and maybe ease up on the garlic next time. My husband's still sweating it out. read more

My husband and I just moved here four months ago, and have been trying to find good, local restaurants (without necessarily needing to drive downtown). We decided to try this place for my birthday tonight, even though the prices were a little high for this area. I couldn't have been happier! The ambiance is comfortable and classy, the food phenomenal. The maitre'd wasn't terribly enthusiastic, but that might have been because it was a Tuesday night, with "Wing Night" in full swing on the bar side of the establishment. The waiter appeared to be new, as he stumbled a bit over things, but again ... Tuesday. His suggestion on a glass of Reisling was spot on. We shared the crab cake and fried green tomato appetizer, which was tasty enough, although we both agreed there was a 'bottom note' missing. I thought more of the chili remoulade would have done the trick. For dinner, my husband got the filet mignon, which was fabulous. I got the Chicken Chausser, which was also amazing. Even the vegetables that came on the side -- mashed potatoes, broccoli, baby carrots -- were perfectly done, fully cooked but still firm and tasty. For dessert we shared a slice of New York cheesecake. We are cheesecake snobs of a sort -- and this one satisfied! Made on site, the texture and taste were amazing, and the fruit coulis a nice counterpoint. My husband would have preferred a more robust coffee blend to balance the sweetness of the cheesecake, but that's a minor point. Overall, we would definitely go back, although probably just for special occasions based on the price. read more

The service was great, and the food was AMAZING! And the price, while more than Applebee's or whatever, was really not bad for the quality of food. It really surprised me because with it nestled right between the Pggly Wiggly and the gas station, I expected it to be some kinda greasy burger joint. But it was really cute; candles and mirrors and classical music. I wanted to kiss the chef - my dish was some sort of crab chicken potato thing and it looked like it came straight from the pages of some fancy food magazine, and just was so incredibly tender and full of flavor. The only drawback (the reason I took away a star) was there was some private event going on, and their very bad karaoke or whatever it was really should have been contained. I don't know if a door was open that shouldn't have been, or if it was just turned up WAY too loud - but I really wish I didn't have to be assaulted with the same guy poorly singing song after song the whole way through our dinner. Really killed the atmosphere! I think they could have asked the party to quiet down a little, for the benefit of their many other guests. read more

I am deeply disappointed and saddened by the behavior of the general manager, April, during my recent visit to Oscar in Summerville. April approached our table to inform us that some ladies at another table complained that the back of the restaurant was loud. Notably, all the customers in the back were Black, which made her comment seem blatantly racist. Our waiter, Adam, was unaware of the complaint and apologized for the situation, indicating this wasn't a concern for the staff until April made it an issue. What should have been a great dinner with friends ended in disaster and shame. April never returned to address the situation, leaving us feeling disrespected and unwelcome. I will never spend my money at a place that doesn't appreciate or respect me as a customer. I am extremely disappointed by the way the general manager handled the situation and I have requested the owner to call me to discuss this further. This incident has ruined what was supposed to be an enjoyable evening, and I strongly advise others to think twice before dining at Oscar in Summerville. read more

Then for the entrees, my wife had the chicken Oscar, our oldest son had the king cut prime rib, our youngest had the frutti di mare, and I had the braised lamb shank. Everything was cooked perfectly and was extremely filling, but we still left room for those sinful desserts! We look forward to our next meals as we intend to try each and everything on the menu! This little gem radiates a warm, nostalgic ambiance, yet its delectable cuisine is truly the crowning jewel. We were a party of 8, and Kelvin took exceptional care of us, exemplifying impeccable politeness, courtesy, and seamless control of the room. He expedited our drinks, presented us with daily specials, and ensured our orders were placed promptly. The wait time for our food was remarkably brief, no more than 10-15 minutes. For appetizers, we ordered the fried green tomatoes, fried calamari, and two of us indulged in Oscar's shecrab soup, which was rich, meaty, and full of flavor, with a hint of cinnamon. My entree, the shrimp and grits with cheese sauce, bacon bits, and green onions, was nothing short of phenomenal. An Unpleasant Dining Experience: Surprising Credit Card Fees During a recent dining experience, I was unpleasantly surprised to find an unexpected charge on my bill. As I handed the server my credit card for payment, I noticed an additional $3.20 charge for credit card processing. When I questioned the manager, they claimed it was standard practice and blamed the credit card company, despite the fact that it was not. Instead of adding hidden fees within the bill, businesses should consider adjusting prices to better accommodate their guests. The server directed me to the bottom of the receipt as the only place where the fee was mentioned, however that was after the fact I already paid.. Unfortunately, this experience has left me feeling frustrated and disappointed, and I will not be returning to this establishment. read more

We were there with our vendor, and the restaurant provided the perfect setting for a productive lunch while still feeling relaxed and enjoyable. Let's start with the ambiance and happy vibes. The restaurant was classy in the best way--beautiful, comfortable, and polished without feeling overly stuffy. It has that upscale steakhouse atmosphere that makes you feel like you've stepped out for something special, while still being warm and inviting. The service was excellent, and the staff was absolutely wonderful. There were as many as 4 servers assisting in between meals. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and professional without hovering over us. For a business lunch, that balance is important, and they really got it right. And then there was the food! My sweet tea with lemon was excellent and a perfect accompaniment to lunch. Our table enjoyed a variety of dishes, including the vegetable ravioli, the Halls Chophouse lunch cheeseburger, and the Halls Chophouse salad with salmon. I ordered the spinach steak salad, with my steak cooked medium-well, along with strawberries and Gorgonzola cheese. It was delicious! I loved the combination of the savory, succulent steak and Gorgonzola with the sweetness of the strawberries. It was a great choice for lunch--filling without being overly heavy. Of course, I couldn't leave without dessert! I ordered the Crème Brûlée, and it was the perfect way to finish the meal. Creamy, sweet, and a wonderful ending to an already delicious lunch. Overall, Halls Chophouse in Nexton was a fantastic choice for our business lunch. Great food, excellent service, a wonderful staff, beautiful ambiance, and plenty of those happy lunch vibes. It was upscale and classy while still being comfortable enough to enjoy good conversation. I would definitely return--not only for another business lunch, but also for a nice meal with family or friends. Overall great experience and I would definitely recommend for lunch!

Completely bland, no seasoning, no flavor, nothing. It clearly wasn't grilled either -- it looked like it was cooked on a skillet with a skillet ring around it and absolutely no grill marks. Paying $39 for a piece of meat like that is ridiculous. The mozzarella sticks were just okay, nothing special. Overall, this place was a huge disappointment and not worth the money. Save yourself the trip and go to Outback, LongHorn, or somewhere else. I didn't bother to take pictures of this stuff and I didn't eat it.

She suggested a great wine and even brought a sample to try prior to us making our selection. We started with a few appetizers. The fried calamari was not very impressive as it looked like store-bought calamari rings, and it wasn't real hot. The oysters Rockefeller did not have a lot of flavor and again not very hot kind of lukewarm in temperature. Not sure I would get either of these appetizers again. We chose a wedge salad, which was very good. Had nice chunks of blue cheese and a nice creamy dressing. Everything is served à la carte. The small sides are enough for two people to split. Where is the large is big enough for four people. I chose the bone in pork chop, which was pretty good, but the presentation was not all that great. My side was the stuffed mushrooms from the appetizer menu and they were delicious. My husband had the ocean 17, which he really enjoyed great flavor on the scallops and grouper he ordered a side of brussels sprouts, I thought they had a little too much balsamic in them. For dessert, my husband had the pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. It was served warm and it was delicious. I had the strawberry cake which was amazing. Felt like the prices were a little high, but the service was great.

From the atmosphere to the service to the FOOD--everything was fantastic! We started with shrimp cocktail and French bread, along with a glass of Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. For our entrées, we had the filet mignon and beef bourguignon, and WOW! Every bite was delicious and beautifully prepared. Our waitress, Reina, was so sweet and attentive, and the owner personally stopped by our table several times to make sure we had everything we needed and that our meals were prepared perfectly. That kind of personal attention really made the evening feel special. The restaurant was packed, and we even saw a few couples turned away because there simply weren't any tables available--which tells you everything you need to know! Definitely make a reservation!
