Let's start with the positive. Our waiter was "young"Tom. He was engaging and attentive. Drinks: my husband ordered a salty dog. Either there was so much vodka that it was bitter or the grapefruit juice was old. Not good. Soup: we both ordered the she crab soup. We wanted bowls but got cups and decided to wait and we could always order more. Glad it was a cup! The base roux was flour heavy and so was the sherry. They emulsify the crab and so there were no glorious chunks. In fact, you could not taste crab! Appetizers: We decided we wanted to just eat appetizers (and dessert!) First up was a shrimp ,cocktail where the shrimp were mealy/(mushy) and bland Next, seared scallops that were perfect (I checked both sides) and not over cooked Third was the fried oysters with goat cheese grits and a lime/jalapeño aioli. The goat cheese was overpowering and conflicted with the jalapeño aoili so forget about tasting the oysters. Okay so I decided to try my favorite dessert, crepe brûlée. The pastry chef did a light crunch (as requested ) on the topping but managed to put heavier sugar in the center and burn it when firing. He then covered it with strawberries. Shame! Even though the description calls for STRAWBERRIER, you don't hide an over done dessert. You redo it! Of course I moved the strawberries and tasted the burnt sugar. Do what now? I went here based on YELP reviews. I understand that Covid and 50%occupancy is throwing off managers and chefs so I gave what should have been a one star review a three but if we come back when they are back to 100% and get the same experience then this review will seem like a present. Get it together, listen to the wait staff if they bring back comments. We NEVER accept comp. we make comments to improve the restaurant and KEEP IT OPEN. If this food doesn't improve, they will not survive. read more

I've visited a few times, primarily with coworkers. The salmon salad is a hit. The servers are very polite. I no longer eat meat but when I did, I was told I needed to try their burgers however I was not impressed with their burgers at all. read more

Took out of town guests there for the "pan seared Scottish salmon". Delicious seafood for a fair value. Service was high quality.

Excellent meal! Excellent service! Our waitress was friendly and on point. I had the best French onion soup with the perfect amount of LOTS of cheese, strong beefy flavor onion soup and large amount of bread & onions. Hubby had a very tasty southern veggie soup which was thick and hearty. The shrimp and grits I don't think it was traditional with mushrooms but was so flavorful it was worth every bite. Very worth the dining experience. Plus the $10 Yelp discount was an added bonus! You definitely should eat here if you are looking for a great place to eat. If we were locals and not visitors we would eat here regularly. read more

Our server Olga was excellent! She brought out our 14 month old food before everyone else's. She also knew the menu. The food was very good. My major problem was that the bathroom was not suitable for a mother of small babies. read more

I don't do a lot of reviews, but this was one of the worst meals we have had in a while. Both Steaks were under cooked, the chicken Oscar had a strange sweet sauce on the chicken (like a Marsala or something) that was not disclosed on the menu. Both my wife and I were sick to our stomach after the meal. The waiter provided great service but the kitchen didn't back up his efforts. This was a waisted $115. read more

This is an interesting restaurant because of its old style rooms with tables and booths. My partner and I went for dinner, so the outside light was fading but the dining room had just enough lighting to make the experience elegant. We had reservations and were seated upon arrival by a friendly and courteous greeter. Our waitperson "Gene" was excellent, being friendly, helpful and courteous. We ordered house wines (chardonnay for my partner, and pinot noir for me) which were excellent. My partner ordered she crab soup and scallops which she enjoyed thoroughly. I ordered the vegetable beef soup and braised short rib which were tasty, but the rib seemed a bit overdone and was slightly dry. We finished with dessert. My partner got the lemon meringue cheesecake which she claimed was excellent. I got the "Bananas Oscar" signature dessert which was awesome. In both cases the desserts were very large and we struggled to finish them (they were not the type of dessert one could take home). My suggestion would be to make smaller portion sizes and charge less for them. I wish Yelp offered 1/2 stars as I would give a rating of 4 1/2 instead of just 4. read more

I was so looking forward to trying this restaurant after reading all of the amazing reviews. I took family visiting from out of town here for a nice meal and it was one of the worst! The only good thing we got was the she crap soup. Everybody else got steaks and all complained about the lack of flavor. I tried my moms and it legit tasted like water. The weirdest tasting steak we have ever had! For the prices of the steaks, we were extremely disappointed and dissatisfied. read more

We went here for the first time as a couple last week on Wednesday which is Italian day (at least for the specials) and it was very good. I had gone there once before my wife had moved down during our transition from North Carolina to South Carolina. We both had a selection from the specials list, my wife a NY strip with basil and parm (can't spell it, so won't try and embarrass myself and won't get close enough for spell check to figure it out either) cheese and I had the shrimp and chicken pasta. Both were very good and the portions were very filling. As it is Lent and my wife gave up drinking alcohol for the both of us, we only had ice tea. It is amazing how much money that saves you. The bill was very reasonable though if we would have been drinking our normal selections it would have easily blown over the century mark, which starts to make it a bit expensive for a regular place to eat. So it will stay on an occasional visit list, but very well worth it. The service was good, the ambiance while a bit dated still nice, very clean and they do have a very nice outdoor area as well. I would definitely suggest it. read more

Oscars is one of my favorite places to eat at in Summerville,SC. Their food is superb & yummy , too .

Great service, ordered the filet mignon and lamb, both were excellent! Really great atmosphere and food. Will be coming back!

Service was very good. Food not so much. When you shell out significant coin for a steak it should be edible. The chef sliced through it and still put it on the plate as if anybody could actually chew and swallow it. My wife ordered veal on the recommendation of the server. Veal should melt in your mouth. This veal was the same as my steak - tough to the point you couldn't chew and swallow it. Nicely complained to the manager/hostess. We were given VIP cards for 10% off our future meals. Really? As if we would come back for lousy food just because it was 10% cheaper. Nice ambiance and nice folks - but the food was simply bad. Not being mean - just being honest. For the prices they charge the food should be spectacular. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. After a run of bad dinners, these formerly-loyal customers won't be back. read more

I know this place has a lot of great reviews but due to a bad experience there I have checked this restaurant off our list of places to return. My wife and I just moved to this area and have made an effort to support local businesses and restaurants. We eat out regularly and enjoy trying all the new offerings available to us in Summerville. Our annual NYE routine is to have a late lunch or early dinner in a nice eat in restaurant then usually a movie before spending a nice evening at home. We picked Oscar's as our choice for a nice location with great reviews to enjoy a good afternoon lunch in our new hometown. Unfortunately it just did not happen. We entered the quaint foyer area of the restaurant and were promptly greeted by a hostess. We told her that we would like to have lunch and as is our custom asked if we could be served a meal at the bar. She said that would be fine and then showed us the way. We sat at the bar for about 5 minutes before anyone made an appearance but that was not a big issue. There were other customers at the bar and at tables and it appeared as though there was only one server working at the time. We ordered drinks and after another 5 minutes they arrived. No menus presented and she never asked if we wanted anything to eat. Then she disappeared. After some time she appeared with food and served the other people at the bar their food orders that all looked pretty good. Never bothered to look at us or bring menus. After waiting 15 minutes I was able to get her attention and asked for menus. She then informed us that the kitchen closed at 2pm to prep for all of the later reservations. We arrived just after 2 and it was now 2:30. We told her that if the host would have told us the same we would not have stayed. In order to have something with our drinks she showed us a minor menu of minimal appetizers. My wife ordered a crab dip and chips to eat with her drink. I tasted the dip and told my wife it has a sour taste to me which proved itself when I was sick one hour later but thankfully my wife did not suffer the same effects. Finished our drinks, paid the bill and even left a decent tip for the lack of service. On the way out, I was asked by a new hostess how everything was and I did complain that we would not have entered if we were properly informed that we would not be able to eat. This hostess then stated that the kitchen was open until 3pm and we could certainly stay to eat. I informed her of the differing opinion in the bar. She spoke to another server and it seemed none could agree to what was going on in the kitchen. I told them all that they lost what would have been good regular customers and we left for the Ice House where the service was great and a full menu available all day. read more

Oscar's never disappoints me, I love this place! Food, service, they have 5 stars from me all the way around. Great Summerville resturant with great southern dishes! read more

I was told by a local that this restaurant is the best in Summerville. LIke many restaurants off the beaten path in this town, it's nestled in a mixed residential/business neighborhood in a building that looks like it may have at some point in the past been a home. I popped in on Saturday night without a reservation. The maitre'd told me that I would have to wait a while unless I wanted to sit in the bar. I peeked in the bar and there was plenty of seating. Why not? According to the announcement sign by the street, Friday and Saturday are Prime Rib night. I had the Queen cut (12 oz for $24.95); it included a baked potato (w/ butter, sour cream, cheese and bacon) and vegetable. I was amazed that I didn't have to wait more than about 7-8 minutes before the food was at the table. Jennifer (my waitress) was very attentive. She was super sweet with a great personality. After I wolfed down the outstanding meal, Jennifer asked me if I wanted dessert. I'll turn down dessert 9 times out of 10, but I thought I should at least find out what was on the dessert menu?!? Jennifer listed a few items, then she said, " My favorite is the Banana Xango"..... WHAT????? Jennifer said, "OMG... Banana Xango is heaven in a dish. It's my favorite." "What is it?" "Deep fried flour tortilla filled with bananas and cheesecake, rolled in sugar with caramel sauce, cinnamon ice cream, whip cream and sprinkled with shaved white chocolate and pecan bits." What the hell.... you only live once, right? Well, this dessert is big enough for two big eaters and it should be outlawed.... it was outrageously good. I could only eat about half of it but I wallowed out of the restaurant a happy camper. Color me a return shopper sometime soon. read more

Lovely, great food, Summerville's only "upscale" dining establishment, complete with white table cloths and fine atmosphere. It's not Halls Chophouse but it's very nice. Food is good, service is good, not quite 5 star but for Summerville it's probably top of the line. read more

Just okay. In fact, average at best. We had tasteless filet mignon, uninspired barbeque chicken, mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus, along with a slightly-better crab cake. The service was good but we ended up leaving a lot on our plates. It was not bad; it just was not equal to the prices they were charging. (So that you do not get the wrong impression; we do not mind paying for good food. We just did not find it here.) read more

"Wonderful experience... we will be going back every opportunity!" I am so glad that I ignored the atypical bad experiences of a few. Although unfamiliar with many of the amenities of Summerville, I had heard wonderful things about Oscar's from friends at home. My wife and I were in the Charleston area to celebrate our 40th anniversary and CHOSE to eat at Oscar's... what a fortunate decision. Oscar's has a very relaxed yet casually elegant welcoming feeling, white table cloths & quality flatware, and the service and food definitely MET & EXCEEDED our expectations! I fully understand why another reviewer loves Tom! What a friendly fine attentive server he was for our evening at Oscar's. I learned from him that the owner of Oscar's has had the restaurant for 30 years... and Tom has been a part of the Oscar's experience for almost 20 of them while doing any and every job required during that time. I almost passed on the "traditional" iceberg wedge... only to find that Oscar's wedge is anything but traditional. Yes, a large delicious cold iceberg wedge topped with a fine creamy Bleu cheese & crisp bacon bits... so traditional... but then the "secret" balsamic vinaigrette drizzled over it knocks it out of the park! A wow! I could have done it again tonight if not a few hundred miles away! I'm not a salad person but I finished it and still could have eaten more! Then I had my entree from the appetizer listings... fried green tomatoes and crab cakes! WHAT is NOT to love about either of those for lovers of low country cuisine? Oscar's gives you BOTH in one presentation: stacks them in alternating layers topped with a spicy sauce that compliments both tastes! What a challenging combination to marry into a succulent feast! My wife had a seafood combination offering that seemed to suit her fine... she commented that it was delicious. She made a point to finish ALL the seafood although she did offer me a taste IF I wanted it. She seemed relieved that I did not. Toward the end of the meal Tom asked if we'd like coffee (since we'd had water with lemon). We said "yes," mentioned it was our anniversary, and we planned on sharing a dessert. Learning it was our anniversary, he insisted upon giving us a complimantary dessert! It was beautifully presented for us to share: delicious vanilla ice cream wrapped in a perfect crepe... topped with whipped cream and drizzled with a chocolate sauce! Mmmmmmmmmmmm, so good! Just the right end to our meal. While there I observed 3 business men having drinks and dinner while conducting an informal business meeting, an couple dining together, and a lone local man who has a "usual" selection and surely must frequent several times a week. All received prompt attentive service from what I could observe. Business, pleasure, or romance... Oscar's seems quite able to provide delicious fare to make it memorable. I had mentioned the "bad" reviews earlier in the afternoon to my attorney in Summerville, and his take on it was that any restaurant can have an off day due to an unexpected large crowd or some personnel glitch beyond its control... & he and his wife eat at Oscar's 4-5 times a month! It's his favorite place in town... he's lived there all his life... and he declined to endorse either of my two other possible places that I asked him about over Oscar's! He also told me that items from Oscar's past not on the current menu are possibley on the bar menu & available. I spoke with Tom about this and he also said anything Oscar's has had on the menu in the past is probably still available "if a person just asks for it!" Oscar's is quite worty of competing with almost any restaurant Charleston has to offer! And in 32 years of Charleston being our favorite getaway destination since moving to SC from GA... all I can say is that I'm so sorry that I did not discover Oscar's sooner. However, I will frequent it from now on... because I've not had a better meal in Charleston's historic district anywhere within walking distance from Calhoun Street to the Battery! read more

You don't need to travel to downtown charleston for a good meal when oscars is right in your back yard. Clean, inviting, and friendly staff that know the menu. Felt like a locals only place, which is exactly what we wanted. We had Gene as our server and he was great! Attentive, knowledgable, and made us enjoy our experience. Started with a Caesar salad and was offered the anchovy option which most restaurants do not, matched with fresh pumpernickel bread. My wife got the fried chicken breast which was amazing but I wish we had asked for some honey mustard to dip it bc it was like a giant chicken tender. I ordered the tenderloin Oscar style. Wow! Loved it and cooked perfectly as well as the asparagus. Will definitely be back...even if it's only for desert which was a strawberry banana cheesecake with ice cream. read more

The first thing I must say is : the food at Oscar's was fresh, delicious and prepared beautifully. Hail to the kitchen staff !!!! Our wait staff was attentive and delivered our food as expected and the timing was perfect. Thank you! The reason Oscar's sank to 2 stars for me is because of the noise created by a table of 10 ( walk ins) who were having a holiday party right next to us. We chose Oscar's for our celebration too. Our Dad's 90th Birthday. We made reservations early and the first seating in a quiet restaurant because Dad's hearing aids aren't the best at blocking out background noises , making it difficult to hear at times. When we first sat down I realized they gave us a table next to the kitchen door - which meant lots of swinging door noise but Dad was doing alright and we could still carry on a conversation so I did not ask to be moved. It's not easy moving around a 90 year old person. Within a few minutes , the tables next to us were pushed together and 10 lively folks sat down effectively ending our conversation for Dad. He kept asking :" is it loud in here ? Do you guys hear this noise too? ". He enjoyed his food and the special birthday dessert made him happy but he couldn't talk to us and he couldn't hear us when we spoke to him. We had to strain to talk and hear each other. I wish Oscar's had a party room to separate large groups from smaller ones or have a quieter room for those with hearing impairments. When the manager came by to ask of all was ok I said nothing because I didn't want to upset Dad and also I did not think there was any way to salvage the situation in the moment. Thank you Oscar's for the delicious meal but the ambiance was important to our family too. read more
