All of the 1 star ratings had me concerned before I went for a check up on a knee issue I've had for the last few months. The front desk was pleasant and told me to fill out the paperwork "as you go." At that point, I figured I wasn't going to wait forever. Before I could finish the first-time patient paperwork I was called to go to a room. Within minutes I was seen and taken back for an X-Ray. I returned to the clean room and the Dr. showed up within a few minutes to give me the lowdown. He was courteous and to the point, which I like. I then went back to the free parking and headed home. I forgot to ask for an itemized receipt for my HSA so I could get reimbursed for the copay. I've since called and their billing is handled elsewhere. I haven't gotten a return call yet to get the paperwork I need for the copay. This is the only reason I'm not giving a 5 star at this point. It was a decent to great experience, but the frontdesk doesn't know to ask what you're going to need as far as paperwork goes. I'm awaiting approval for the next step -- MRI -- so if they submit the request and I'm approved, I feel like I couldn't ask for much more. Don't read all of the 1 star reviews and get freaked out just yet. I hope you have the same experience I've had so far and I hope the frontdesk learns to know that everyone who goes through there should get an itemized receipt regardless. It's always better to provide too much medical paperwork, than too little. read more

I started having knee pain and got a referral to come here. I'm beyond frustrated with this place and the doctor I saw (will not mention his name). It took me about 2 months to be seen by the doctor...they wanted to schedule my initial appointment with a PA, which is very skeptical. When I finally saw the doctor, he literally saw me for 5 minutes. I'd like to note that his bedside manners weren't the best. My knee pain might not be life threatening, but it's debilitating and I felt the doctor brushed it off. It has been more than a month of my MRI and no one has called me back after calling 3 times. I left a voice message for the assistant and never got a call back. So I finally just got another referral to see an orthopedist. I got to see my new ortho doctor within a few weeks, got my MRI report read, and have gotten a referral for PT all within a month. SOOOO horrible!! read more

Where can i start? My doctor works only one day here and that sucks. The appointments are books for next 2-3 months.( also sucks). Doctors physician (jessica) never picks up phone and says will call back and never calls back. I had issue with my knee that surgery had been done 4 Months ago and i left two Massages for jessica and never got returned. The issue is a inflammation in my knee that had been coming on and off and now its bigger than ever. I left a massage and finally after complaining the doc assistant (jessica) picked up and rudely told me , you need to get an appointment and told me what you want me to do!! This is a terrible experience in this office. I hope i never have to go back. I dont know if it lack of training or lack of caring. read more

This is a long-overdue review that is well-deserved. I have been a patient of Dr. Lakshman since April 2019 for my trigger fingers, of which one was operated for a release in September this year. In my surgery and and post-op, Dr. Lakshman, Mario and Jessica were all there for me. We chatted during the in-office local anesthetic surgery, making it superlatively relaxing and comfortable for me. I felt like a family member! My experience with this clinic has always been pleasureable and enjoyable. Everyone is nice, friendly and helpful. Not only is Dr. Lakshman a fine knowledgeable doctor, he has a gentle touch and is approachable (this is very important as I would not feel bashful to ask questions as a patient). Dr. Lakshman's demeanor is mellow and polite. Not sure if other patients know he has great sense of humor too! read more

Dr. Mark Jo is great! He did my hip replacement and it is fantastic. He gives it to you straight, tells you everything and then some. I could just tell he was a good doctor. I am young, but had a tear in the labrum, which is the cartilege around the hip socket, usually a sport injury, but in my case, my sport was falling a 2 times within a couple of years. I didn't want to have surgery if I could avoid, so I considering the stem cell procedure, and researched and did a consult for that. But it didn't seem prudent considering arthritis had started to develop as a result of the injury, and there is no guarantee it will be successful. It's very costly too, so it didn't seem like the right choice for my situation. My operation was done at USC Verdugo Hills. Staff was GREAT! I was only in the hospital a total of 29 hours because I was doing so well! I used a walker for about 4 days, until the physical therapist came and said I didn't really need it, so used just the cane for balance. I did the exercises, breathing stuff, never used pain meds, and now, almost a year later...I am GREAT! Taking yoga, starting back to my swimming classes, and can even do a high kick again! The physical therapist said that 'your doctor did a great job!' I know he did and I thanked him for it! I have my life back. For this office though: MAKE SURE to confirm your appointments before the 'day of'. I did have trouble once, but they made it right. They are not quite as busy as they used to be, as one doctor retired. TIP: Wait times can be crazy, try for 1st or 2nd appt of the day. read more

Got seen 2.5 hrs after my appointment that I was early to and saw people who got there after me get seen before me, almost made me late to work, not cool! There phone system is trash and was hard to get a hold of anyone let alone my surgeon, wouldn't recommend. read more

Wow surprised there aren't any reviews... in the time i spent in the lobby waiting for my one appointment that is past an hour late I could have written several bad reviews. This place seems to be one if not the only referral office for orthopedics from doctors in the Healthcare Partners Network. Booo to crappy HMO's right? What I will give is that at least they don't make you jump through a million hoops to get you to the specialists that you need. They referred me right away to a wrist orthopedic doc, but it meant another day off from work and another appointment spent waiting in the lobby. C'mon folks get your act together... I get it more patients = more $, but can you at least pretend like you guys took an medical oath? read more

This place is really the epitome of what's going wrong with our health care. My experience: Appointment Making - Very long phone wait to get put on hold again. Waiting Room - During the wait (they were running late) another patiant came in complaining about not being able to get through on the phone either so he had to drive in. Normally this is not a big deal, we deal with this in retail all the time, but this guy was in ALOT of pain and driving was difficult for him. He was told that they would put a note in with the doctor and apologize because they had messed some sort of scheduling thing up for him. Appointment - Very rushed, could barley get a word in, and rushed out the door. EDIT: Doctor never got back to me after a week of having my MRI in the office. I had to call in myself two times and the receptionist found my MRI, and said she put in on the doctors desk.... that was two days ago, still no word. read more

Dr. Shankar Lakshman is an excellent surgeon and I am completely satisfied with the two surgeries he has performed on me. He is also a very considerate and caring gentleman who takes the time to explain in easily understandable language what the procedure will entail and then answers any questions you may have. My mom fell and broke her wrist. We called the office to get an appointment and the Girls on the phone were super nice, and helpful. We called on a Wednesday got a next day appt with Dr. Lakshman. He was awesome and the whole appointment was quick and easy and now my mom is healing great. read more

I had a very poor experience at this office. I was scheduled for surgery on a broken pinkie finger, and the day before the surgery I found out it was canceled because it had never been scheduled by the medical assistant, Kiki, at Ortho Center. When I called, she was very rude and blamed me for the foul up. Maybe there was a miscommunication between us, but the surgery center was calling as if my surgery date was firm. Kiki was very hostile and unprofessional, and literally said "I don't care" when I suggested that I might write a bad review of my experience. Also when you call the office when they are closed or out for a 1 1/2 hour lunch, there is no way to leave a voice mail, you can only leave a message during their open hours. Also very poor coordination with the surgery center, no one could tell me what time I needed to have my ride pick me up. And finally, I noticed my finger joint was out of alignment after my first surgery, compared to the xray before they placed the pin. I tried to ask the doctor about it, and he was very hard to reach and then tried to rush my off the phone. He got a little loud and said I should stop talking over him, which I was not, he was talking over me. I'm requesting a second opinion from another doctor because I just don't feel confident about Dr. Lakshman. read more

tl;dr Orthocenter has an unethical president who treats this more like a business than a place to help people; Even if you've been referred here, you may have other options through your insurance (e.g. Healthcare Partners). Try Risser Orthopedic instead. Long version: As was stated in another review, Orthocenter is oftentimes where HMO insurance will send you, because it is among the least expensive options available. When I went in for my appointment first thing in the morning, the waiting room was totally full, and it appeared that appointments were every ten minutes or so. I was anxious about my visit, as I had broken off part of the head of my radius in my elbow, and I would probably need to have surgery. I had read some of the negative reviews here, but I didn't think I had any alternatives because of my HMO insurance. I saw Dr. Billings, and she was very friendly and knowledgeable. She looked at my x-ray, and without any inspection of my arm, she said that I was going to need to have the radial head totally replaced in surgery, a somewhat aggressive procedure. I was impressed that they were able to sign me up for surgery just a few days later. But then the next day, I talked to some colleagues at work who had previously had surgery performed by Dr. Billings that resulted in major wrist issues several years later. So I investigated an alternative solution because I didn't want to end up with a bum elbow the rest of my life. A couple of friends told me that one of the best elbow doctors in Pasadena was a guy named Dr. Amir Mostofi at Risser Orthopedic, also in Pasadena. I contacted Risser, and it turned out that they took my HMO insurance: Blue Cross Anthem with HealthCare Partners. So I asked my primary care physician to send a referral to see Mostofi for a second opinion. He did, HealthCare Partners approved it, but then for some weird reason, the referral had to go through Orthocenter itself before I could make an appointment with Dr. Mostofi. This was all a rush deal since I needed to have the surgery asap before the bone started to fuse in a bad position, and Orthocenter wasn't forwarding on the information. I finally called them to find out why there was the holdup of passing on my referral to Risser Orthopedic. After waiting a few minutes, I was connected to Ray Martin, the president of Orthocenter, who rudely asked me why I would seek a second opinion with Dr. Mostofi. He told me that Dr. Billings was the best elbow orthopedist in all of Pasadena, and that he and every other person in Orthocenter goes to see her for elbow problems, so I shouldn't have any problems with her. I found this extremely unprofessional, since Ray Martin is not even *a* doctor, let alone *my* doctor, and he's giving me unsolicited medical advice. I'm not sure why he is the gatekeeper on whether or not I get a second opinion with another doctor about my medical issues, when it was approved by my insurance company. But I think this well illustrates the unethical practices of this company--it's a business for making money, not for helping people. I suggest you steer well clear of this place, and just because you have been referred here by your insurance doesn't mean you have to stick with them. I ended up getting cleared to see Dr. Mostofi at Risser Orthopedic, and I had a great experience with him. I ended up doing the surgery with Mostofi instead of Billings and it was covered by my insurance. I'm two months out from surgery and I've got full range of motion back and most of my strength in my elbow to where I'm able to do pushups and pullups again. read more

A great facility with a very enthusiastic staff . They understood I wanted to get my procedure for my hand done as soon as possible and they made it happen . My surgery went well and recovery was short. I can't thank them enough for getting my hand back to normal as smoothly and efficiently as they did. I would recommend. PS. Not quite sure why everyone is saying they aren't good, this place is great! My primary Dr at the time was an idiot and only sent me to get a second opinion because I begged! Once I got to the Orthocenter they were quick at getting me in to see my Dr and they listened to me and helped me out a lot. No problems what so ever on any o f my three appointments over the course of 2 months. The staff is nice, sincere, and professional. The rooms are clean and organized. The X-Ray process was one of the most efficient I have ever had, and I have had plenty (about 50 or so in my 25 years on this earth). You will more than likely have to call a few times before you can actually speak with someone. Their phone hours are so inconvinient and you always get some random voicemail & then claim they can't give out direct ext #'s, so guess what? Everytime you call you get the same voicemail & have to wait for a call back. Receptionist at check-in has no manners and is unprofessional. She always seems to be in a bad mood. She's always complaining and making people feel dumb. The Doctors here will spend literally 2 minutes with you & ignore any concerns or complaints. Worse experience I have ever had! Unfortunately when you have an HMO you'll probably get sent here but I would never recommend this place. My dad had to come here to see a hand specialist and she was ok but her assistant was so incompetent, his spelling in the report was awful, you should at least know how to spell basic body parts. We tried to get him a second opinion and ortho center refused to do an authorization to another hcp approved place because they say his injury is workers comp when it is not. I felt compelled to write a review after seeing so many bad ones here. I fractured my wrist and just had surgery to fix the damage last week. The entire staff has gone out of their way to help me on several occasions ie; replace wet cast, refill urgently needed medication, etc. They scheduled my surgery as soon as it was approved and did everything possible to make sure everything was ready for the surgery. Each visit I was greeted with such kind people at the front, the cast techs, and doctors. The owner even came into my exam room once to just say hi and reassure me I was in the best hands possible for my surgery! Great place ALL around for me! This place is a joke! I waited 2 hours after my appointment time for my son to be called. This office is over booked and under staffed, very dirty. Dr.'s seem very rushed, overworked. I would never come back to this office nor recommend this office to anyone. My son has a cyst on his right wrist, the dr. came in seen it and was quick to remove the fluid, my son has very high anxiety and stress that we were under the impression it was a pre-op appointment for it to be removed. Dr. got frustrated with my son since he didn't want to do the procedure, we both advised her of his anxiety and fear of needles it was dismissed. So i became upset and we walked out. read more

Worse office. No one returns calls. Waited over 3 weeks for to get an MRI they ordered. I had to hound them to get an answer. Ridiculous wait times in the waiting area and no attendant at the desk to inform you of what is happening. Teresa who approves the referrals is so rude. They must have paid the people who gave good reviews to this place. Don't bother to leave a message on the answering machine because no one ever calls back. My mom had to go thru this place to see a surgeon from that goes there on certain days of the month to see patients. He even commented on how this office is incompetent. Came here a couple of months ago and met with Dr Lakshman. Super cool dude and walked me through the process for my surgery for a torn ligament in my finger. The surgery was quick and successful. I pretty much had full movement in my finger with therapy in about a week. Him and the nurses were all professional and nice and the office was super clean. Definitely recommend this place if you're ever looking for a hand surgeon. read more

The hand "specialist" , (mediocre ''Dr'' Annette Billings) that have not real answers for my fingers was supposed to send me to a hand therapy place, was told to go within a week's time, well, the referral never came, no one called me, no one answer's the phone, I called my primary dr. office, they called and find out not referral was ever made! were told the person that does that is out "sick". I must state that this review is for my current experience. I have been at Orthocenter previously and received much better care (e.g., from Dr. Billings for a hand injury). This time I saw Ms. Katz, P.A. for a chronic shoulder problem. In our consult, she said that--if she were me--she would get a shoulder replacement ASAP, but she also agreed to get an MRI referral and took x-rays. I then spoke later with her about the MRIs once she received them, which included cervical spine and shoulder. She said that my soft tissue (ligaments, tendons, etc.) looked good around my shoulder. When I asked if she now thought I could delay shoulder replacement at least 6 months, she said yes. She then informed me that I have a bulging disc at C5,C6, which she felt might be the reason for my more recent occasional stabbing pains in my scapular area. She said she was referring me to a neurologist. I asked if this was for a nerve conductance test, to assess whether any C5,C6 impingement is the culprit, and she said it was. I then waited for weeks and weeks, made multiple phone calls, and was finally told that my chart had been misplaced but was now found. I then received a referral for pain management from an anesthesiologist. I called Orthocenter and asked for this mistake to be corrected because I needed a nerve conductance test from a neurologist and did not have chronic pain issues. Unfortunately, I then received a second referral to a different pain management center. (I should note that this occurred during Covid-19 which is harder for everyone. My first visit was in person, however.) After almost two months from being told I would get a neurology referral, I went back in person to the office and explained my problem. I also asked for copies of my x-rays and also the MRI report. The receptionist was kind and helpful and got my MRI report. The Medical Assistant was also kind and helpful and suggested that I contact a different doctor at Orthocenter who would presumably get my neurology consult. He then gave me my x-rays, but when I got home the disc contained only two of my x-trays (I believe I had taken multiple) and around 6 x-rays of someone else (shoulder and knee). Suffice it so say, I will never return. read more

Most incompetent place I've ever dealt with. Just cut them out and go to Huntington because they're gonna send you there anyway if they find something wrong. It took me almost 10 days to get my MRI ordered after repeatedly telling them I didn't need an authorization because I have a ppo. I have been waiting 3 weeks for a referral to be mailed to me on what to do about a bulging disc in my back. 3 weeks to mail a freaking piece of paper. The office managers excuse is that nothing happens on a dime in their office. No kidding. read more

I'd give this place a -10 star rating if I could. This physician's assistant who thought he was Elvis Costello in a white lab coat tried to sell me a hip replacement as my only option. He couldn't look at me straight in the eye most of the time, and looked around the room, because he didn't know what he was talking about, and attempted to sell me a lie. I'm too young a for hip repacement, costello-boy. Plus, make sure there's no voyeurs in the room when someone pulls up your xray. Forget this place. read more

My first appointment at the Ortho Center went flawlessly. After that is was all down hill. I was given instructions to call the PA that worked on my shoulder if it began to cause me pain. It started acting up so I called the Othro center only my PA's name doesn't have an extension so after entering the mind numbing phone maze that the Ortho center has set up, I reach the desk of a Jose with whom I left three messages over the course of a week. Finally after a week and a half and another message, Jose calls and tells me he was out for a few days and says that I now needed to call someone at another extension. I call and leave two more messages over another week and receive no call back. Today (Friday 4:00pm), I get back in to the maze and reach Jose's message machine again, hang up and try pushing every button (many buttons lead to Jose) till I reach a live person who says she is very busy and who would I like to talk to? I tell her I want the LIVE PERSON at the extension I was directed to not the answering machine. The phone rings.....AT LAST a real person. She know who I am, and what I need (she must have got my messages), she says "Okay I will get my manager to sign this paper and I will call you back when she does. In short...a little over two weeks to get told that I will get a call back. I have begun holding my breath. I'm a already a little blue around the gills. just wanted to update my review after reading all of the others. There are definitely satisfied patients, especially the ones that got to see a doctor early on. But there is no excuse for what happened to me and Im terrified that it has happened to so many others that didn't to get to see the docs. I get it that it saves money to have PA's see patients for chronic pain. But I had an injury that was never treated til i changed docCan't they numb your knee before doing arthrocentesis with a dang spike?I still haven't gotten over the trauma- it's supposed to have either local anesthetic and IV or general anesthesia. I'm planning on talking to one or more of the doctors to see if they even know what goes on. read more

The wait time is ridiculous. Last time I went I checked in at 4:24 and was not take back until roughly 7:00. The time before that we waited almost 2 hours in waiting area and over 30 minutes in the actual room. Front office staff are pleasant and personable. Once you get to the back, all staff, including doctors seem very rude and completely unorganized. This place books way too many appointments that they can't handle. When I call with questions, once again the people in front who answer are nice, once transferred to the back they are complete rude assholes. I hate coming here but insurance doesn't care. One time I came here for issues with my LEFT elbow. After waiting 2 1/2 hours the doctor came in and I explained the issues with my left elbow, doctor grabbed my right elbow and did a couple maneuvers and told me everything was fine and they couldn't help me. I was dumbfounded and said it was my left elbow not my right. I get we make mistakes but cmon. Then examine my left elbow and said I was right there is something wrong but they were qualified to help me even though they supposedly were when I set up the appointment and paid for it. I came for a second issue, got there at 4:24 and was told they were 30 minutes behind schedule. I was finally taken back to a room around 7 and once again check out what was wrong and said they were not qualified to help me even though when I set up and PAID for the appointment they were supposedly "specialist" in what I needed help with. Besides the fact I set up the appointment to also have x rays, when I get there they have no record I am supposed to have x rays done and can't find out anything because the lady that had my info left at closing time, and it was already 7pm so they couldn't access my information. After going round and round they finally did the x rays I wanted which are the x rays they stated the needed to help me, said they couldn't help me even though they are supposedly specialist in what I needed help with and I was on my way. read more

Seen by a PA, I didn't realize that till I saw the card, meaning I wasn't told I was going to be seen by a PA, I was under the impression that I was going to see by a doctor. Took them forever to file a PT authorization and when I asked why it took too long, I was told they had too many patients to handle. Finally, they take forever to answer the phone and put you on hold for a very long time. Rude people answering the phone. This is a horrible place to try and make an appt, to try and speak to anyone. If I was not forced to go through this center due to my insurance, I would not. It is a giant waste of time and causes only frustration. I have repeatedly been told they will call me back - and it has been week after week. I am constantly on hold and have memorized their hold music and speeches. They keep telling me a member of their care team will be with me shortly, but they lie. I have been going to ortho center for the last 3 years. The main issue is that they never answer the phone. If you get thru and can get a recording you never grt a,call back. You have to physically yinto the office to make an appointment. The only way ypu can get pain meds is by paying co pay to see dr who will write the postscript ion. I havs been 17 days for pain meds. I have called 5 timrs walked in and to date no response. I had to go to urgent care wait 4 1/2 hrs to get pain meds. Ortho center is the worst offive I have ever been to. Do not go read more
