Excellent doctor. I had the RNY 23 years ago. I'm so grateful that I had the procedure. I weighed 278 before the procedure And my weight is still 135lbs. I would highly recommend Dr Lourie. Thank you Dr Lourie. read more

I had an extremely positive interaction with Dr. Lourie and would highly recommend him. I was referred to him for a surgical consult. Each step of working with him was a good experience. To start, his staff are professional and responsive, both by phone and by email. The doctor himself is also great -- he conveniently provides pre-surgery consults via Zoom and has an excellent bedside manner, with clear, understandable explanations and a patient demeanor. He also made time for my questions which I appreciated. Overall, I would recommend him and his office highly. read more

Dr. Lourie is my idea of a great doctor. His communications skills, technical expertise and results made me a happy and satisfied patient. I had a small inguinal hernia that grew bigger over time and although I was not feeling any pain, having to worry about this growing bulge caused me concern. Dr. Lourie advised me to get the surgery done when I was ready and to monitor it over time. As it got bigger and bigger I finally decided to schedule the surgery. After watching way too many YouTube videos where everyone complained about the pain and were on medication , I expected some version of that post surgery. I had read the robotic surgery eliminated a lot of those complaints, but I still thought I would experience some version of the discomfort many non robotic patients expressed. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. First day home after a morning surgery I was up until 10pm walking around normally without any pain. Next day I went for a walk around the block a couple of times. As the first week progressed I ended up walking 3 miles around the local park with no discomfort. I never needed the narcotics that were waiting for me at the pharmacy. I just finished my 2 week checkup with Dr. Lourie and he examined the small incisions on my abdomen and gave me the all clear. I will take it easy for the next 2 weeks and then slowly ease into my bike riding and other work out routines. I expect to be completely back to my active sports life by 8 weeks out. If you live in the San Gabriel Valley or Los Angeles area, I highly recommend this man to take care of your hernias. He has an international reputation and lives right here so don't hesitate to give him a call. Thank you D. Lourie for taking care of my problem. A shout out to his staff Norma and Monique for responding and coordinating with such professionalism. read more

Today I'm writing an update to let the doctor know how I feel and hopefully to give a little more info to others who are looking to get a hernia repair. After continued discomfort for almost 3 years from my hernia repair and doing some internet research, I decided I wanted my mesh removed. I figured the best place to start this conversation would be with the Dr. that performed the procedure. I contacted Dr. Lourie to talk about my discomfort and my intention to have the mesh removed. However, Dr. Lourie did not want to see me after reading my yelp review which I think is extremely unprofessional and childish. I am assuming as a business owner and more importantly as a doctor, you might want to make sure you address your customers and patients questions and concerns. I am experiencing discomfort from a procedure he performed and yet he is unwilling to meet me because of my honest Yelp review. Sounds ridiculous but it's true. I even offered to remove my yelp review to get some advice from Dr. Lourie but they still refused to see me. After that I went to see a different doctor today and he told me that putting a mesh over such a small umbilical hernia (2 centimeter) was not necessary. That my surgery could have been stitched up through a simple 15 minute procedure without a mesh. So I am even more depressed now after hearing this. If you are interested in getting a robotic mesh surgery, please seek some second or third opinions before proceeding. Here are the risks of a mesh repair surgery according to what the doctor told me today. 1. He advised me not to remove my mesh because it might cause more complications as the mesh is now attached to my muscles which will be very risky and cause more damage and pain to remove. The risks I now face with removing my mesh are greater than my continued daily discomfort. 2. If you get pregnant after a mesh repair surgery there could be substantial pain as the mesh is stretched. If you don't have a mesh and get pregnant the worst thing that can happen is the hernia will be reopened. 3. if you have another problem that requires surgery such as a gallbladder issue, they might have to go through or under the mesh which might introduce risk and complications. 4. Robotic surgery requires three holes/incisions compared to a non-robotic procedure. 5. The risks and complications of using mesh for a hernia repair is something you should have your Doctor explain to you in detail before you decide to go down this path. Do your research and get 2nd and third opinion. My 2 centimeter hernia is now a permanent source of discomfort. This experience makes me feel like the Doctor's motivation is driven by some financial arrangement with the mesh company vs recommending the best procedure for your patient's situation. If I could go back in time, I would never have had this surgery as it has negatively impacted my quality of life through the introduction of daily pain and discomfort. read more

The BEST in his field!!! Almost 14 yrs. ago I saw Dr. Lourié after he was highly recommended to me. I have always feared this procedure as I have never heard of anyone keeping the weight off. I went to his support group meetings at Huntington before committing & met many people who have managed to do so & keep it off for many years. Everyone said it was a complete rebirth for them & they were right!!! His attentiveness to any questions or issues you may have after surgery is immediate. I once called him on Thanksgiving while on vacation in Maui. He called me back within 3 minutes! The really amazing thing is... you don't have any appetite for the first year. You have to be reminded to eat! I'm not kidding, it's remarkable! I reached below my goal weight in about 4 months. I would whole heartedly recommend Dr. Lourié to anyone who is "on the fence" about this procedure. Your life will be happier, healthier & you won't feel "invisible" ever again! His office staff is also stellar. Just do it!!! I'd like to check 10 stars! read more

I was advised to see a surgeon for my inguinal hernia and I'm really glad that I was referred to Dr. David Lourie. We started with a zoom call where he confirmed my problem and explained the laparoscopic procedures involved. Answered all my questions. And a few more by email as well! After consulting with my family and doing a lot of internet research on the subject (laparoscopic vs open surgery) , I scheduled the surgery which was about a month out at the Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. I was a bit nervous since this was my first major surgery (hey, i'm in my 70's), but all went smoothly. Dr. David examined me the morning of the surgery and confirmed that I had a left hernia developing ...he told me that he would take care of that in surgery as well. Youtube provided me all the details of robotic assisted Laparoscopic surgery which I won't go into detail here. Dr. David actually has a video there where he explained the process of the surgery in detail. That was what impressed me the most....the guy not only knows what he's doing, he's confident enough to provide a teaching video for other surgeons. It's now been just a little over a week since the surgery. Didn't need any of that narcotic pain relievers (that he had standing by at the pharmacy, just in case) but told me that Aleve and tylenol as he prescribed should be enough. I was walking by the 2nd day after surgery. Off all pain meds by the 4th day after surgery. On today's zoom call, Dr. David again answered all my questions. I am extremely pleased with the outcome. Pain pretty much all gone, I'm walking, doing light chores, driving,.... although he has imposed a 15# lifting restriction for 3 more weeks. I feel that Dr. David was always there to answer any question that I might have; he assured me that the procedure would go smoothly and routinely. He was right on. Happy to recommend Dr. David Lourie to anyone needing surgery. read more

I saw Dr. Lourie for a double inguinal hernia procedure. He is a skilled surgeon with a great bedside manner. My surgery went smoothly and exactly as he told me it would with no complications and a relatively easy recovery (I recovered faster and with less discomfort than a friend who had the same surgery weeks earlier.) I am grateful to Dr. Lourie and his entire team for providing such good care. read more

When yearly physical bloodwork showed problems with liver enzymes, my doctor sent me for an ultrasound, which revealed gall bladder issues, not the least of which was a gallstone. She recommended that I see Dr. Lourie. Dr. Lourie is the kindest, most thorough physician. He explained the different available options, as well as the side effects of each, and we decided to remove the silly thing. I was able to get a surgical appointment for the next week, and wound up gall-bladder free less than a week after my first appointment with him. I am feeling much better than I have in years. Apparently the gallstone was blocking the bile duct and it could have turned out to be very serious; thanks to Dr. Lourie, all is well. He is an amazing man. He and his staff are absolutely the best; very accommodating, caring, and compassionate. I would recommend him to anyone. He absolutely rocks!! read more

THREE TIMES he's performed surgery on me in the past eight years, and while that's bad luck for me, I feel fortunate and honored to have had the work done by Doctor Lourie. He is exceptionally kind, gentle, and now is considered a foremost expert in his field. My last laparoscopic, robotically-assisted procedure was even used to teach newer surgeons, via video (I signed a waiver). He repaired a couple of unexpected issues while performing the prescribed work, too. I just can't say enough about this guy. A local/national treasure. Oh, and did I mention NO OPIOIDS afterward? Seriously, it was all OTC meds and I hardly needed that. read more

Dr Lorie saved my life, quite literally. He performed what was expected to be simple exploratory surgery, it turned out to be VERY complex. Had it been a less skilled surgeon, I would have been in deep trouble. He corected a problem that a well renowned surgeon didn't caused. I was told by my GP I was days away from death were it not for the complex surgery he performed. Dr Lourie's wisdom and experience are second to none and he was professional, personable and thorough in explaining things to me afterwards. I now need hernia surgery and don't want anyone else to perform this surgery. Thanks Dr Lourie! read more

Best part, no pain after the surgery. None. He was a pro HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

I first met with Dr. Lourié in May 2016 to find out more information and discuss Bariatric surgery. I found his demeanor to be warm and friendly. His record is impeccable and so I started my journey with him. What I liked about Dr Lourié was that he has his patients go through quite a few tests and procedures beforehand so there is less of a chance of complications during surgery. I had issues with my insurance company covering the procedure but Monique, Dr Lourié's office manager never gave up and I was finally approved for surgery. His fellows, hospital staff...everything was top notch. He is highly regarded at the hospital as everyone I met said that I was in excellent hands. Knowing that Dr Lourié is a general surgeon, if I or anyone in my family needs any other surgery, Dr. Lourié will be my first choice to see. read more

Everything was great and I am recovering very fast from an umbilical hernia surgery. The one thing that could be improved is the time spent by Dr. Lourie to answer questions. It felt rushed. Otherwise waiting time was minimal and everything was very fast. The remodeling of the waiting room was off putting, hopefully it will be done soon. read more

I am a 75 year old lady who had a complex case of all 3 kinds of hernias. (basically, my insides were falling outside of my abdominal walls and the cat scan showed that part of the problem was very close to my lower bone. These large hernias extended from lower abdomen all the way to my navel.) A scary situation. I asked my daughter, a very good researcher to find me a great robotic surgeon, which was Dr. Lourie in Pasadena. The surgery was 4 1/2 hours long and I was able to walk afterwards, very little pain which was solved with over the counter medication., Not only is he an amazing surgeon, who teaches all over the country, but he has so much compassion, patience and kindness in his heart. He treated me as if I were his mother. What a blessing in my life! I can't speak highly enough about this wonderful man. It was obvious that he loves to help people and do his best for his patients. Such a rare person in today's world. Thank you, our precious Dr. Lourie. (thank you, Monique, also for your communication and encouragement). Frances in Seal Beach, California. read more

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Lourie as my surgeon. I started my journey in March and had surgery at the end of September. He has the absolute best reputation. Two of my own doctors told me they would trust no one else as their personal surgeon. That speaks volumes. I had to be readmitted for a fever post-op and Dr. Lourie and his staff were incredible. They were thorough and caring, and Dr. Lourie came in on a Saturday to see me inpatient, even though his fellows were on call and handling my case. I was very well cared for and released the next day. Thankfully it was not a surgical complication. What I appreciate most about Dr. Lourie are his stringent bariatric pre-op requirements. Various medical tests are performed to make sure that surgery is as safe as possible. His success rate and safety record are both impeccable. He is an incredibly thorough surgeon, and that's exactly what you want. I cannot recommend him enough. read more

Dr. Lourie explained the procedure well before hand in his office. He answered all my questions before I could even ask them. Dr. Lourie and his office staff are extremely professional and explain in detail my Gallbladder removal at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. Monique was able to get me scheduled rather quickly and I went home same day surgery with NO pain at all. I was suffering from a pretty Chronic Gallbladder full of Gallstones. I had the Laporscopic procedure with only 4 very small entries. Very minimal scars and still no pain at all. I was up walking same day. I, Walt Lewis, (husband of Barbara S.) feel so fortunate to have had Dr. Lourie as my surgeon. I had been having very painful abdominal attacks for many years which required periodic visits to emergency rooms followed by short hospitalizations. After reading Dr. Lourie's four-page surgical report and seeing the serious situation Dr. Lourie found in my abdominal cavity and how he was able to correct the problems he found, I respected him even more. Choosing a surgeon is often a big gamble. With Dr. Lourie I hit the jackpot. read more
