I don't usually write reviews unless something actually stands out, and this place did. Finally got a chance to try The Original Mona Lisa after being referred by Jamie, one of their employees. She stopped by WLVS Den Kava Bar in Mentone and dropped off coupons for us to hand out to our customers, which already told me they're actually putting in effort to connect with the community. I ordered through DoorDash, and the whole process was smooth. The order was prepared fast, delivery moved quick, and it actually showed up earlier than expected, which almost never happens. Got the spaghetti and garlic bread, and it was awesome. The sauce had real flavor with a nice level of spice, not bland, not watered down. No extra salt or pepper was even needed! You can tell it's made with intention and not just thrown together. They also hooked it up with extras. Extra piece of garlic bread and extra sauce on the side, no charge. That kind of move says a lot about how they run things. Garlic bread was on point too. Buttery, flavorful, not dry, not skimpy. Overall, this is one of those spots that doesn't try to be flashy but still outperforms a lot of places that do. Good people, solid portions, and food that actually hits. I got fried zucchini and a turkey sandwich. The fried zucchini was burnt and the ranch dressing was just ok. I didn't eat the zucchini. The turkey sandwich was ok but I am not a fan of balsamic vinegar. It is probably not something I would try again. I was disappointed that they charged me $3 for a can of soda. I walked in to store; placed my order. Only one person working. When my bagged order came out I specifically ask him if my dessert was in there, to which he replied "yes". Should have untied the knotted bag but I took his word for it. Got home opened bag. No dessert. Called him right away. Had to go all the way back there. It was super yummy, just for next time i'd probably ask that they remove a brown sauce they put on it as the bottom got soggy. I just can't figure out when/if these guys are open. When I have seen the open sign, I don't see ant cars in the parking lot. When I decided once to give a try, it seems the dining room is no longer open, just the drive through. My family and I ordered 2 fettuccine Alfredo's , a lasagna, and an order of (4) garlic bread. So very disappointed when I got home with our food and the fettuccine Alfredo's smelled and tasted spoiled. At $ 15.25 times 2 I kind of expect the food to not be spoiled. The lasagna tasted ok. The garlic bread looked like they took what would be a normal piece and cut it in half so $3.99 for four small pieces of garlic bread. Unfortunately I don't think my family nor I will be returning. I've come here a handful of times over the past few years, and while I can truly see potential for this restaurant to be the neighborhood's favorite mom and pop / cornerstore / Italian comfort food place, I honestly think this restaurant needs a menu revamp. Upon closer look you will realize their pasta option just really has one option. They have one and only one sauce option, and yet on the menu, it is listed as 4 options based on the 4 types of pasta (different shapes) you can pick from that are all paired with the same red sauce. What kind of choice is that?! It seems like an option you would only ask a 4 year old: to pick Mostaccioli vs spaghetti (btw, Mostaccioli is just Penne without the ridges on the pasta tubes). What made it semi better was the when I asked for chicken parm on top, but in the end I was still fairly disappointed because it just looked sad. The cheese used on top of the chicken was a sliced piece of deli cheese (nevermind fresh mozzarella, why can't it just be shredded cheese?) that was half melted. I can do a better job melting cheese at home on some frozen Tyson's chicken tenders topped with Prego. Most recently, we also ordered a side order of pizza fries. While it sounds like a fun appetizer, I was sorely disappointed to receive barely warm fries topped with melted cheese and a few slices of pepperoni. First off took way too long but i get that quality food takes time but this was not quality... mozzarella sticks were literally bricks how do you over cook mozzarella sticks and they were ten bucks! I also ordered the mastaccioli and payed extra for meat sauce on it and they didn't put meat sauce on it. Yikes! If you're looking for something to eat in the area just steer clear of this place. We wanted to try this out and we're excited to do it. It started out terrible and just got worse. The employee was working alone, we knew that was going to be a struggle, but ordered anyway, The Menu looks fantastic! I wanted to try the Parmigiana Chicken Sandwich and my husband would try a cold Italian sub so we'd be able to try both hot and cold, I asked to use the restroom and the woman explained I'd have to use the men's restroom because the ladies was being remodeled, she walked me to the men's room and unlocked the door for me. What a surprise, no toilet paper Paper towel dispenser didn't work either. Let's get back to the reason we came here. My parmigiana chicken sandwich was COMPLETE TRASH! Fired chicken nuggets with aN obviously canned tomato sauce and sliced provolone melted to the bread itself and not the top of the chicken as excepted. I am not one to write reviews but I feel that I have to speak up. Our hope is that this review will help Mona Lisa's to make changes that will improve their restaurant. Pre pandemic we loved this place. Tonight I was craving Lasagna. We ordered 4 lasagnas for our family. I'm so sorry to say that the sauce was acidic and had no flavor. There was no meat and very little ricotta. My daughter who is not a big eater finished the portion and is still hungry. I'm very disappointed and hope that Mona Lisa makes changes to their food so that it tastes more like homemade with garlic and basil along with other spices. Please bring back the flavor.
