OMS is every bit as good as anywhere else around the city, and far better than most! And where else can you get a sandwich + fries for only $5.50 + fries? Literally, NOWHERE, Period. If I'm nearby or know I'm going to be passing nearby, I schedule a visit. It's a shack with hole/window in the wall to place your order, pay for your order, and pick up your order. I have frequented this place for about 4 years because I've loved their polishes and bone-in pork chops. However, about 2 months ago I was hospitalized for severe food poisoning which was easily traced back to two polishes I had purchased from here and eaten soon afterwards. My doctor said it was probably the onions, which I had ordered with an extra amount. I suspect that some of the onions weren't rotated adequately and sat on their grill too long. I would rather believe that hypothesis instead of workers failing to practice proper hygiene. I can't convince myself to ever go back. Great flavor, bad results! read more

You only appreciate the reality of this is while standing in line. The line never ends. There is no concept of time, day of the week, sunrise or sunset...it' just another day to make a transaction, food for money. I went to the famous Original Maxwell Street for a pork chop sandwich and hot dog. The dog was tasteless and the pork chop tasted old and dry. Upon picking up my order I asked for a couple of extra napkins and the food server literally threw a couple of napkins my way and stated sarcastically "Here...thanks for the tip". First of all I didn't appreciate his attitude,and, if you have to ask for a tip you don't deserve one. When I went to UIC this place was pretty good but I can think of a lot of other places to give someone my money for a quick and tastier bite w/o the attitude. They have really gone downhill. Nothing seems to satisfy the stomach demons like a Maxwell Street polish and fries. Yes it smells and yes it's greasy and yes you'll smell in the morning, but for that fleeting moment when your body just wants a savory, filling awesome late night treat there's nothing like it. I am using this particular location because it's the location I frequent most however they're nearly all the same. Having attended UIC in the early 90's I spent countless hours hanging out in "Jew Town" before the University took over through eminent domain.
