We've been back here every year since my first review and it's still great! This time we had the turkey burger with apples and cran mayo, fries and the Rueben. The fries were the best I've had in a while the perfect crunch to them. This is a decent general store. They seem like they sell a lot of local brands of syrup, soaps, knick knacks etc. They are slated for "Groceries" but don't expect produce. If you need packaged foods like salsa or chips, cookies, detergent etc, then this is the place. They have travel associated things like tooth brushes, paste, analgesics, bandages etc. There is also a wine and beer section that I didn't peruse. You may want to check out the souvenir section though, it seems like they had a bunch of neat things The best part is probably the deli. This is a great stop if you wanted to pick up breakfast or lunch before a hike. They have reasonable prices ~10 bucks a sandwich. The portions are on the smaller size though but the price reflects it. I probably went at a slow time as they had one person working the kitchen and they other person who should have been at the register was not around. There was also one employee who was just meandering but didn't offer to help until I asked her for some. The problem was that they don't exactly wear uniforms to announce that they work there and it was only that I saw her hanging around with a computer at a non-eating area that I finally asked and she was able to help me. But she clearly saw a bunch of us wandering back and forth, confused by the lack of staff. Not a bad place to stop if you are already passing by! read more

The store is a well laid-out tourist trap, but beware the markup of locally produced goods. The Picarello garlic bread they carry has a suggested price of $5 that ever other store in the area respects-- this place jacks up the price 65%, even though the exact same loaf of bread is available across the street for the suggested price. This kind of practice certainly helps keep items in stock longer, but it's price-gouging at its finest, and bad for Vermont. read more

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but what a neat place on the inside. Just a place we decided to stop in at in our way through on our drive up RT100. Lots of take home souvenirs (shirts, local syrup, jelly's and other goods) and OMG the French toast here is OUT OF THIS WORLD! The bread was nice and soft, the syrup was not overly sweet and not too thick. Tastes amazing and fresh. My husband had the breakfast egg sandwich and he raved that it was delicious as well. Definitely recommend! Didn't expect to leave with syrup and socks but after eating this French toast I wanted to bring some of Vermont home with me. read more

"Original" is somewhat of a misnomer at this general store. This general store in Pittsfield is a modern, artisanal, and quaint place. It's a great market to pick up some crackers and beer or grab breakfast or lunch at the eatery. They carry an assortment of products like Vermont maple syrup, local products, beer and wine, puzzles, books, and hardware. There is a tap with AquaVita kombucha and Cold Brewtus coffee. The store has an assortment of chips, candy, salads, and snacks. There's a variety of food in the counter display, and it looks fresh. They have hot and cold sandwiches, pizza, burgers, and other items for lunch and a wide spread of breakfast items as well. The portions are a bit small for the prices, but it's reasonable for the quality that they serve. The best! The best chef salad. The best German chocolate cake. The best turkey sandwich (except for the ones we make from Thanksgiving leftovers.) My husband's toasted sandwich was thick with meat and spread with a tasty mustard-maple sauce. My salad consisted of a generous bowl of mixed greens, sliced peppers, fresh mushrooms and green beans, sweet, juicy cucumbers, smoky bacon, and moist strips of roast turkey and ham. Not a single element was less than fresh and delicious. The house-made Italian dressing was also excellent. As for the German chocolate cake--it was amazing. Three moist, chocolatey layers with coconut pecan filling were topped with a cocoa whipped cream frosting. It was not dry or overly sweet, but a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The delicious menu is vegan-friendly and includes lots of fresh, locally-grown ingredients. I bestow only 4 stars because menu items that should be vegan are not due to a single ingredient, such as mayonnaise in the spread on a wrap. Also, the general store part is still coming along. Fro example, there's plenty of soy milk on the shelves, but no Vermont Soy Milk. The new management has made this into the kind of restaurant and business I love to patronize. People familiar with Rutland's quirkily delicious Back Home Again Café may remember Kesher, the maté bar marvel, and his wife Sarah. They are now the managers-in-residence of the Pittsfield General Store, allowing Kesher's business creativity, carpentry wizardry, and passion for creative local food to flower. YAY. read more

We stopped there for breakfast. I ordered the kale scramble which looked delicious! The sour dough bread toast was crunchy and chewy. Now the eggs were over cooked with a rubbery texture. The staff followed the Covid safety but not overly friendly. read more

We enjoyed many items here! The breakfast sandwich was loaded with scrambled eggs. The blueberry pancakes were awesome. We also loved the zucchini muffins for breakfast on another day. We stopped on our way up to Stowe, and can't say enough about how welcoming and well-stocked this store is. The staff was very friendly and gave us some excellent recommendations on the local beers they had for sale. We stocked up for happy hour at our destination and got some great fresh, local snacks and coffee for the rest of our road trip. And we really liked the old-school wooden fridges! OMG! If you are hungry, hangry, or just want a taste bud delight, stop here immediately. We ordered 2 of the specials from the deli, and haven't had fresher, more tasty combinations anywhere in recent memory. First off, on a "circular roll" (aka hamburger bun!), roast beef, cheese, corned beef, tomato, onion and other yummies served grilled. It was huge, filling (even after 4 days backpacking), and hit the spot. Next up, a wrap with ham, spinach, butternut squash, cheese, cranberries..... I can't say enough things about the flavor combination, size, and brilliance. I am not one of those folks that take pictures of food (ironic, I know), but seriously wish I had so that I could visually revisit this feast. Oh, the beet salad was tasty as well! read more

As a city girl, I don't believe I've ever been to a general store. But the Pittsfield general store is everything I could imagine one would be and more. I want to live in Pittsfield for many reasons, but mainly so I can hang out here every day. As a Death Racer, I spent a fair amount of time at the general store this past weekend, pre and post race (and will spend a lot more time there in the future). The food is fantastic--great sandwiches and excellent breakfast options (including a buffet on weekends). They carry tons of Vermont goodies, including maple syrup and candy and everything else that you can think of. The grocery part is pretty well stocked, and they carry first aid/health/beauty items as well. And of course, the staff is friendly and goes out of their way to help out-of-towners. This is maybe the best restaurant/ grocery store I've ever been to. The menu for the food is excellent, portions are great and the quality is something that you could only find with homemade food from a small town. The grocery side of it had a great selection of quality and even hard to find items that are just awesome. It's a great place to grab a meal, relax and take some time to yourself where sipping coffee or browsing on their wifi. Definitely the heart of Pittsfield and an amazing place. read more

Great food! Their breakfast sandwiches are HUGE and A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. You've got to try the "Black Bear" - scrambled eggs, cheddar, hash browns, bacon, ham, sausage and HOT SAUCE on a huge soft whole wheat roll for $6.95. Sooooo good! Their pizza is really good too. They've got vegan and vegetarian friendly food as well as a full deli selection. I highly reccomend stopping in for a hearty well priced breakfast or a great lunch or dinner. Be careful with the dinner thing though...we have tried to stop many times on our way home from work (7 - 8 pm-ish) and they are closed already or out of what we want. :-( Quaint country atmosphere. My wife and I were in the area doing some leaf peeping and shopping and needed a place to eat lunch. We pulled out our trusty Yelp app, saw and read the great reviews for the Original General Store so we decided to give it a try. The store/restaurant is rustic on the inside, and has a dining area, with nice views, and a wood stove. They serve a variety of drinks and beer, hamburgers, sandwiches and pizza. My wife ordered the pulled pork sandwich and I ordered a cheeseburger and french fries (extra charge). We both had some old fashioned type sodas, lemon lime and root beer. The clerk/server was running around and clearly needed help. She was as attentive as she could be and very nice. Our food took a little bit longer than normal to come out. My cheeseburger was very good and cooked perfectly. My french fries (skin on) were also very good. I don't think they were hand cut but none the less, pretty good. So, why the 2 stars? Well, my wife's pulled pork was simply awful. It was flavorless and seemed boiled not slow roasted. There was a dab of fruit chutney on it but it didn't help much. My wife had one half and couldn't finish the rest. I gave her half of my cheeseburger and french fries. I took the opportunity to try it and agreed with her. If it weren't for the cheeseburger I would have given 1 star. If you go, make a safe choice, get the cheeseburger but plan on waiting a bit for your order. read more

Stopped here for Breakfast/Lunch on our travel from Stowe down route 100. We has the 3 egg breakfast and the waldorf chicken salad sandwich. Fresh, FRESH, FRESH! So good. The breakfast was 3 eggs, potatoes, thick fresh bacon and whole wheat toast. My husband just raved about it. The Waldorf Chicken Salad sandwich was everything that you would want in a yummy juicy sandwich. Filled with fresh chicken, apples and pecans on a homemade rustic bread - just in heaven. this place is wonderful. the sign claims that it is the 'Original' general store. but then it goes on to say 'of rte 100' so i am not sure about that claim. but that is neither here nor there. it is all a VT country store should be. and more. MUCH more. they have a pizza and deli shop inside and their sandwich selections are all so tempting. and they are Delicious! i have not had the pizza but another customer actually piped up and mentioned how great it is. and while you are waiting for your food, if you don't care to watch them prepare it as the place is all open, you can shop around. they have a Huge selection of fantastic VT stuff (not just maple syrup and stuffed moose either.) a lovely selection of wine and cheese and some local goods like sauces and such. and up front is an extensive array of candy. i wish i lived in Pittsfield just so that i had more reason to come here. read more

I have been here a couple of times with my wife. Very good beer selection, and the old school refrigerators are a very nice touch. The breakfast here is excellent, and recommended. However, this is the wrong place to buy maple syrup, holy cow they gouge you! We stopped in at Mom and Pops Syrup and got a quart for $18, but here they charge $27 for a quart of syrup.
