We didn't have reservations, but they were able to seat us outside. It was a cool evening, but still pleasant. Food: We started with several appetizers: fried gyoza, soft shell crab, spring rolls, and shrimp tempura. The standout was the tempura, with a crisp coating and tender shrimp inside. The soft shell crab was good, though it could have been fried a bit longer, as it felt slightly soft. The spring rolls were unfortunately very greasy, to the point of being unpleasant. For my entrée, I ordered the sashimi appetizer. The fish was fresh and flavorful across all three selections, salmon, tuna, and hamachi, but the portions were thinner than expected. When I order sashimi, I usually expect thicker cuts than what you'd find on nigiri. Others at the table ordered different specialty rolls, with the favorite being the Happy Birthday Roll. All of the rolls were good. Service: Service was somewhat inconsistent. They appeared busy, or possibly short-staffed. The staff were cheerful and helpful, but interactions felt rushed. We received water and menus promptly, but waited a while before the server returned. The appetizers and main dishes arrived in a reasonable time. However, there were moments when we could have used a bit more attention, such as needing extra utensils or napkins, which I ended up retrieving myself. Atmosphere: We dined outside on the small patio and didn't go into the main dining room. The patio was pleasant, with red brick and subdued lighting. Came back to this place twice during my weekend trip here. The fish has such great texture and you can tell it was caught this morning! The little seats were also comfortable and the breeze was so nice. The Thai tea was the perfect combination of sweet to tea. It was light and creamy. I definitely would recommend if you can stop by! We ordered the Omekazi boat for 4 people and we were very disappointed. The rolls that were on it did not contain what we requested. The quantity of sashimi was barely adequate for 4 people. In addition it took close to 45 minutes for the food to come out. We were served some appetizers before the boat came out, but we still waited a very long time between appetizers and the main course. Five stars to the gentleman that refilled our water as soon as our glasses were low. However, it's hard to stave off hunger with just water. Two of the people in our party had just flown into Key West and were very hungry after their travels. One person in our party requested a 300 ml bottle of Sake and it was never brought out. Really good sushi spot right on Duval. Plenty of outside seating, we wanted to sit inside but the AC was broken so it was outside for us. The sushi was good, it just started to get warm since we were seated outside, I still thought it tasted fresh. They have a couple options of Asian beers and many sake bottle to choose from. I'm usually very picky about choosing the right sushi restaurant, but I decided to give Origami Sushi Bar a try because it's rare these days to find a sushi place actually run by a Japanese owner, and I assumed that meant it must be really good--even without checking the Yelp reviews beforehand. The sign said the business was started in 1995, and that gave me hope for authenticity and craftsmanship. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find that the owner no longer seems to be actively involved, and the restaurant is now fully run by the crew. While the service was genuinely friendly and attentive, the quality of the sushi didn't meet my expectations. The sashimi wasn't especially fresh, the cuts were uneven, and the attention to detail just wasn't there. Craftsmanship matters in sushi--you can see it in the way the fish is prepared, the alignment of the pieces, and the respect for ingredients. The integrity of sushi lies in both the skill of preparation and the sourcing of truly fresh seafood. The only real way to judge a sushi place is by ordering sashimi or simple nigiri, not the fancy rolls overloaded with sauces, sugar, mayo, and other distractions. Sadly, those fundamentals were missing here. If the kitchen had been guided with more care and pride, I wouldn't be writing this review. We sat right at the bar and got to watch the chefs techniques, very cool. We want to preface that no one should judge a book by its cover cause many would walk in and see a non Asian behind the bar making sushi and walk right back out. We were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the hand work of the chef. We got several rolls and were able to finish it all. Ingredients were fresh and rolls were made fairly evenly. Some rolls were rolled as tight but they had lots of customers and needed to really pound out the orders. We enjoyed our time, nothing special about the location itself or decor. But clean, indoor and outdoor seating. They do have a limit in terms of big groups, but plenty of small tables they can move together. We got there closer to the end of the night and were seated immediately. This is probably the best valued sushi in Key West in regards to pricing and quality. The portions are a bit on the smaller side so if this is your dinner order accordingly. There is seating both inside and outside I would choose the outside my next visit the inside is a little cramped unless you can grab at seat at the sushi bar. The double jalapeño tuna rolls were tasty as well as the shrimp tempura roll. The service was okay and the prices were inline with what you'd expect in Key West. Deep fried oysters were a great deal for $7 but oysters were very small and had thick bread crumbs. Suzy roll for $9 (came in 5pcs) was good, just cream cheese and sauce dominated the overall taste. This place is great. We went there actually twice in a row. I'm gonna start with the atmosphere. Origami is located in Duval Square. They have chain of lights everywhere and the place next to it has cute parrots. There is only one server and her nick name is ninja. She is not the warmest person but kinda funny and super fast. The second day she kinda warmed up. We had the Udon Soup, Sushi Appetizer, Volcano and Suzi Roll. Everything was delicious. I personally think they are overpriced but what can you do if you crave sushi in key west. The Pino Grigio is actually reasonable and so good. Not acidy at all, very fruity. read more

Just be consistent, hot when it needs to be hot, cold when it needs to be cold. Service like it was your last table of the night, fast, accurate and with a smile. This place had great expectations however it fell short on numerous areas. Service/Server: No sooner where we seated at the sushi bar we were asked for our drink orders before we even received a menu. Too pushy through the whole experience up until it was time for the bill. Then we had to sit and wait. First round: No Stars. The server came by with a complimentary seared tuna salad for each of us. The server told us that the fish provided in the salad (see pic) varied day-to-day and that it was only given to the people that sat at the sushi bar. Go figure. RESULT: The fish had a VERY BAD fishy taste. Not on its way to turning, but already bad. I spit it out in my napkin. Hmmm. No! We ordered a sake and a beer while we reviewed our menus. You have to fill out a sushi menu check list rather than communicating directly to the sushi chef. I think this is because his English wasn't that good and it was easier for him. Not a big deal, though my husband likes to converse with the sushi chefs, so it took the fun out of the experience for him. Next up we ordered a miso soup (see pic) which was very tasty, along with a Double Spicy Tuna Roll and Florida Roll (see pics). The Double Spicy Tuna Roll was okay. My husband would get this again. I actually wanted to order a cucumber roll (where the cucumber is replaced with the rice), but upon asking the sushi chef, he only made it one way which was with artificial crab.(??) The replacement Florida Roll fell flat. It had no pop of flavor to make it memorable and was bland. In cases like this I migrate over to my husband's plate, which isn't the ideal dining experience. read more

Origami is my "go to" for sushi on the island and when people ask me to take them to a local resturant. Origami is in my vote the best sushi on the island. They are very traditional when it comes to sushi. Most sushi places smother their plates with add ons *cream cheese, sauces, tons of mayo* and masks the taste of the actual fish ordered. Origami brings the freshest and the best tasting sushi for your dollar. The owner always greets you with a very vocal "Irashai!" The decor is humble, with seating inside and outside. I recommend sitting at the bar, watching the owner and his chefs work is a wonderful thing to watch. My only gripe about Origami is that the service is inconsistent. I have nights where I will tip half of my bill due to outstanding and great service, where some nights its difficult to get your drinks refilled. It seems like the busier it is, the worse the service becomes. That can hurt any business, but I keep coming back again and again. The quality of the food makes up for the "bad" nights that any business is sure to have. I can tell you that in the 15 years I have been dining at Origami, there is not ONE time that I have sent back, been dissatisfied, or let down with my food choice. read more
