Good stop for Chinese food in Nephi, Utah We were driving down from Salt Lake City, spending the night near Yuba, and stopped here for dinner. Oriental Garden is a small, no-frills place, but overall the food was good. My husband ordered the sweet and sour chicken with white rice. The chicken was hot, crispy, and delicious. I had the sweet and sour combo with chicken, pork, and shrimp, along with noodles. The chicken and shrimp were very good, but the pork wasn't quite as good, and I didn't care much for the noodles. They also had "ham fried rice" instead of traditional fried rice, so we skipped that. Portions were generous, prices were fair, and the service was quick. Not perfect, but definitely a solid choice if you're passing through Nephi and craving Chinese food. read more

Our group of 4 stopped around 6:30pm, in a bit of a hurry to get to our hotel later tonight. The building and ambience are nothing fancy. But our order was taken quickly, the food came out amazingly fast, and the portions were HUGE! Soups were decent, but spring rolls were tiny and very fried-tasting (strong oil taste). The Beef Fried Rice was a giant portion, but the flavor was bland. The Mongolian Chicken was chock FULL of onions (too much, IMO), and had very few other veggies. But it had decent flavor. The small portion of Ham Fried Rice served with it was good. The Sesame Chicken was good - a light and crispy batter. It was a very large portion of fried chicken pieces with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The sauce had a good flavor, but there was very little of it. The dish came with plain white rice. The winning dish in our group was definitely the Kung Pao Trio: a mix of chicken, beef, and shrimp. The shrimp was the best tasting of the 3. This was NOT a FRIED meat dish, and there were lots of great veggies (zucchini, carrots, sweet pepps, etc.) The sauce was slightly spicy (mild to medium) and delicious. I'll give this spot props for having some of the best Egg Fu Yung I've had anywhere. The Sesame Chicken was also good. The Wor Wonton Soup was OK but the Lo Mein was clearly made with spaghetti noodles & that hit wrong for us. All that being said, they won us over with the Egg Fu Yung and I'd go back just for that. It's always a crap-shoot ordering Asian food in tiny towns out in the sticks. The old joke is that large cities have individual restaurants for each different Asian country's food but in the sticks, they have them all at one place and that place might be known colloquially as the "Diarrhea Dragon". We rolled the dice on this one and won. It certainly looked iffy but the service was fast and friendly and the locals seemed to be enjoying it. I'm pretty picky and becoming a primadonna princess as I get older. At least I never toss my stupid haircut and ask to speak to the manager. (Yet.) Most cheap Chinese/American food tastes really bad to me - no flavor, too salty, too sweet, or the meat is gristle-mania. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It looks a little... well. "Small town America" and not in a good way... did not inspire confidence. Its not dirty at all, just run-down looking. (I continually use the term Chinese American here because this is NOT authentic Chinese, nor should it be; Chinese American food is a cuisine in its own right and can be excellent when done well. Just don't come to a place like this expecting "authenticity" and then bitch when it isn't.) The lunch special was listed as 6.99 but I think they actually charged us less. Comes with soup, appetizer, entree, side. Not the absurd portions you get from places like Panda and other such nonsense, but the right amount to get me comfortably satisfied rather than stuffed and feeling ill - and I am a large man. Can't speak to the quality of the meat tbh because I ate vegetarian today (I often do at mom-pop Chinese/American joints just because I have such low expectations of the meat quality). Soup - egg drop - I almost never order soup at Chinese American restaurants so I can't say how this sizes up - in fact the only reason I got it was it came in the combo. Tasted fine to me but perhaps a little bland, kind of chicken-noodle soup ish. There was plenty of egg which is nice for a protein punch in a vegetarian meal which is otherwise kind of carb-on-carb. Appetizer - Spring roll - absolutely delicious. I love spring rolls, but they're usually good just because if you wrap crap up and fry it of course it will be good. This actually had legit flavor from the vegetables. I would have eaten ten. Only one comes with the lunch special, but hey, it's a lunch special and it's 6.99 so I'm not whining. Entree- cashew broccoli - they had a number of vegetarian options, which is awesome, and it was hard to pick. I chose this because I have been eating like an idiot lately and I'd like to get some cruciferous vegetables in to postpone my early death. It was quite good - the sauce made it substantial and umami enough to be satisfying without a major protein. side - white rice - it was okay, it had a bit of the vinegar taste of sushi rice which was odd, but it might have been the Off brand soy sauce on the table of indeterminate age. It certainly wasn't BAD and made a good base for the entree, it worked. I'm a California boy and a place like Nephi is a thing out of nightmares - filled with old white men with handlebar mustaches and cowboy hats who make snide remarks when you wear a mask in public, and governed by a certain religious organization I'm sure we all know and love. -_- This restaurant was a nice surprise in an otherwise offputting environment and I would like to eat there again.
