Stopped by El Tapatio with a friend and had a nice experience. We seated ourselves and were quickly greeted by a kind, attentive waitress. I had a smothered burrito with both red and green sauce--delicious and filling. The chips and salsa were just okay; the chips didn't seem fresh and the salsa was pretty watery. Best Mexican restaurant in Payson and anywhere nearby. With that said, coming from San Diego, California (quite down haters) the food here is average Mexican food. Their fajitas are the best thing on the menu and getting it served in a half pineapple is a good twist. The servers are quick to get your order and get your food to you but they do get distracted with the other employees once your order is on the table. The dining area is open and loud which isn't a bad thing for me. It makes it feel more like you're eating amongst friends. My recommendation to the owners is to taste your food and ask yourself, would I be proud to serve this in Mexico? Adding a little more depth of flavor would make you answer yes. I have made this my go to place because honestly no one else from Payson to Spanish Fork is better. read more

Parallel parking in Main Street is difficult, but most places you can park behind, if you can figure out how to get in. We generally get the Pina. My wife likes chicken, I like steak. Tonight's menu, I think it is new, said chicken is $20 and steak is $20, but a chicken and steak if $24. I tried to ask the waitress about that, but she was clueless and didn't want to talk about it. Anyway, I ordered the chicken and steak, hoping to get half and half. It came with about 3/4 chicken, but there were mushrooms and onions and peppers, and grilled pineapple, which is really good. I would love just a mushroom, onion and pineapple fajita. There is certainly enough for two people, and we brought the rest, of the chicken, home. Service was good. The surprise was the bill, I was charged $24.95 for the chicken and steak Pina, someone in management must have had too much tequilla. I will go there again, we have been many times, but beware of these quirks, and enjoy. read more

There is a decent variety of food and the prices are ok. The servings are large. There are tables to eat inside the restaurant. There is street parking. The service is usually good. I had heard really good things about El Tapatio. In my opinion it was good, but not great. Maybe I just had higher expectations and then was underwhelmed. The restaurant itself is a little run down. It was also freezing inside--we went back to the car to get our coats to wear while we ate. I also felt it was a tad disorganized. The fajita in the pineapple is definitelyyyyyy what you need to get though. Don't even open the menu and just get that. We shared between two of us and it was more than plenty. Well worth going for. The downsides: This place is small and popular. So it can be busy and hard to find seating, especially on saturdays. The parking situation isn't great either. They can also be very slow. They usually only have one waiter. Don't expect prompt drink refills or prompt service. Keeping the above in mind, you will likely love the pineapple fajitas. This was by far the best Mexican food I've had in Utah. I've lived in Salt Lake City for the past 9 years, and the Salt Lake staples like Red Iguana and Tres Hombres just don't compete with El Tapatio. If I lived in Payson, I'm not sure I'd eat anywhere else. Obviously the pineapple dishes are their specialty, and it's amazing, but the beans, rice, salsa, tortillas, and aguas frescas were also delicious. In the middle of the meal I was trying to figure out a reason to come back in the future. It was so good! It's located in the cute downtown area of Payson, and even though the ambiance is somewhat lacking, the food definitely makes up for it. read more

We checked out this restaurant based on a review offered by a former camper at a place we stayed in Nephi, UT (Rollin' Home RV Park). We opted for the pineapple chicken fajitas and OH, what a meal! First, this is authentic Mexican cuisine, made to order with beautiful fresh ingredients! The cooking aroma was amazing! Then, this dish was presented in 1/2 a pineapple shell! It was a gorgeous presentation (and we got ours to go)! The meal came with beans & rice, which were some of the best we've ever had, homemade chips, fresh salsa and we ordered extra guacamole. If you are anywhere near Payson, UT (where the high school kids convinced Kevin Bacon to attend their prom), do not miss the opportunity to dine in or out at El Tapatio! We tried this place while in Payson for the Scottish Festival. They were not very busy at lunch but they soon filled in while we were there. The staff was friendly and attentive and they decor was Mexican blankets on the wall with sombreros. I ordered the special of the day which was Shrimp Fajitas served in a half pineapple. It tasted good but was very watery and the cheese made it messy to eat. The filtered my way through the peppers and onions and ate the shrimp, mushrooms, and pineapple. There were quite a few shrimp which was good. The rice and beans came on the side but I didn't find they added anything to the dish so I didn't eat much of them. My husband ordered a combo with chili verse but wasn't ver impressed and didn't eat everything. read more

I've been wanting to try this place after reading all the Yelp reviews. I really have want to like this place, I promise. While eating and the whole experience I evaluated everything and rewind everything in my mind over and over to make sure I post the right review based on my 'own experience'. Staff - they seem clueless of what they're doing. Or maybe they just need to have an actual system in place instead of playing things by ear. They can easily get overwhelming for a party of over 4. They literally just tell you to wait outside without asking for your name or any info-in hopes that they remember and they have some type of reminder that you are waiting outside hungrily. We waited more than 30mins and we were like, maybe we should remind them that we are here in the sidewalk waiting. Guess what? Good thing we did! We got seated and for some reason they keep forgetting about the tables on the left side. So just tip - do NOT sit on the left side because people here must be all right-handed that they literally look pass you it's not even upsetting it was more like a joke. Getting drinks refill was extremely challenging. Food - it was a blah. But I have to say - they are super smart for using pineapple for presentation and making it very intriguing. I honestly think this is why customers are coming wanting to try it. Unfortunately when the food was served it was more like 'what the heck is this?' It was some food mixed together and the only visible thing that I can identify on that dish was the pineapple and a shipload of onions. Carne asada, the meat was rubbery and chicken mole was a meh. Their chips were stale and their salsa is more like 'onions with salsa' - too much onions it's over powering. It could use some salt to taste. I am sorry but I am not really a fan. read more
