My car was overheating and I took it in. I was prepared for the worst: a broken radiator, blown head gasket, and a $1,000 repair. The mechanics at Organic ran a complete diagnostic on the entire vehicle, and much to my surprise (and delight), the solution was replacing the radiator cap. Cost: $15. They didn't try to upsell me, they didn't take advantage of my dire straights. My car is old and high mileage with a lot of little problems (nothing major), and they didn't try to pressure me into spending a lot of money to fix them all. They replaced the radiator cap and I was on my way. Good, honest people. I will be back. read more

I had been looking for a shop willing to do a differential oil change on my Tesla Model S. They we willing to take it on, gave me a loaner car when the correct oil was not available. I decided to try this shop, even though everyone said they we're overpriced and had an overblown opinion of themselves. I inquired about a radiator flush on my meticulously maintained, collectible 2001 AWD Chevy Astro Van. Within seconds, I was told that the age of the vehicle does not adhere to the standards of their shop! What a bunch of arrogant West Asheville Bougie Snobs! With that kind of attitude, I'm very happy not to spend my money there... read more

My husband & I were referred to the Organic Mechanic after a very disappointing service trip to our local VW dealership, which they had my car for 2 wks & nothing was fixed & they charged me. I had several service lights on in my dash & OM diagnosed them within a couple of days. They were very thorough going through my car of what needed repairs. I have a 2013 VW Passat diesel with 180K miles & want it to run another 180K! They repaired my major issues & got those annoying lights out on my dash & I've not had any other issues since I got it back. The check engine light & my glow plug light was blinking (EGR issues). It was a significant repair & it took a couple of weeks, but these guys are awesome & they warranty their work for 24 months. It was worth every penny!! Thank you! You will always be my mechanic of choice! Tina & Gary Shanklin Cullowhee, NC read more

My wife took her car here for engine troubles. They said one turbo went bad and quoted $5300 to replace both. The closest Mini dealer is almost two hours away, so we agreed. After the fact, we called the dealer, who quoted $3700 for the same work/parts. Five months later, her car started making loud noises in the engine compartment and the cabin filled up with exhaust. We took it to another repair center, who found that one of the turbos had disconnected from the exhaust manifold because it was not properly connected and torqued. I called OM, and they paid the invoice, after talking to the repair place. I added one extra star for this. However, the insane pricing and shoddy labor will keep me from returning. read more

My car alerted that the back brake pads were critical. I brought my car into the OM and they told me I needed to replace my back brake pads, sensors and rotors, all the front stuff as well , replace brake fluid, etc etc etc for a price just under $2000. My car only had 24,000 miles on it. I asked what was the matter with the rotors and was told it's a European car and they ALWAYS change the entire brakes out not just the pads. I called the mini dealer to see if this is normal and they said no. I told OM to do nothing and let them know what Mini said and they insisted that was their practice. I brought the car to the mini dealer. Needless to say only the rear brake pads and sensors needed changing.... Shame on you OM! I will say they didn't make me pay the $70 brake inspection fee read more

5 star. I was visiting asheville my car was flashing some mysterious error codes on the dash. this business was recommended. They took only one day to run diagnostics. They said nothing was wrong. Organic Mechanic - Auto Repair Near Me - Asheville, North Carolina

I could not say enough good things about John at Organic Mechanic. Our car malfunctioned while on an out of town trip and I was lucky enough to contact John. From the first phone call he was helpful and reassuring took time to listen to my problem and had our car back on the road in 24 hours. Thank you John. read more

Avoid. These people are incompetent charlatans. They held my car for three days, fixed nothing, and still expected me to pay them for diagnostic reports that failed to diagnose the problem. By the way, 'organic mechanic' is an oxymoron and a contradiction in terms. These people are milking a prime location and gullible Asheville yuppies to make a quick buck. UPDATE: Apparently these folks are quite perturbed about my lackluster review, and are accusing me of 'leaving other bad reviews under burner accounts' and starting a 'bad review war'. These are the same people who had to delete their previous Yelp entity after watching their star rating plummet. No 'fake news' here, just a regular dude with a hybrid VW - I understand that these cars are hard to diagnose and harder to fix; I also understand that people pay for services rendered. No service was performed on my car, which I was without for three days. Quite Trumpian business conduct for a bunch of hippies - overbill for underperformance, then call your detractors liars. But what else should one expect from a business that actually claims itself to be an "organic" mechanic? read more

Unethical business. I drove by last week (mid-pandemic) and saw their sign said 'here to help'. I called to ask what it meant and spoke with John, the owner. I informed them a friend with 3 young children had just had her car break down. I had just visited her to deliver groceries and finish helping her file for unemployment. Although she had no money now she would begin receiving benefits within the month. She didn't know what was wrong w her car, if it was reasonable to fix or if she should look for another. At this point she just needed someone to tell her what was wrong and how much it would cost to fix. I explained that she was very close, right on Livingston. I expressed I did not know what they were offering but she needed help. I thought best case scenario they could fix it and she could pay them back when she received unemployment or the stimulus check. Worst case scenario they would simply help her diagnose it. That would be the least they could do to 'help' right?? John asked me many questions about the car I didn't know the answer to so I told him she would call him Right Back and I left him her name, which is very unique. She called back 5 min later and a very rude woman answered the phone, said he was busy and took her info. He never called back. She called them several more times and left her info, again, with the same rude woman. He never called. 'Here to help' obviously didn't mean here to help. It meant 'we are pretending to be good Samaritans, bring us your business' Absolutely Shameful! Boycott these people. Go down the road to the far less pretentious Dr Dave's Automotive. They are not only far more kind and affordable, but they also are Actually Helping people!!! Serving free community meals on the weekend!! Vote with your money! Hold this business accountable! They should be ashamed for using this disaster to boost sales with false advertising pretending to be helpful! They are overpriced capitalists who can't give 10 min of free advice to a mother in desperate need of help! My gut tells me it was her living in the Livingston community and being audibly black that caused them to fail to return her calls. So add overt racism if not subconscious racial bias to the list. Asheville Please hold this business accountable! read more

Wow, looks like they deleted their old Yelp page to get rid of their bad reviews (mine is gone). This place screwed me. Took me for a huge ride (pun intended). I ended up having to go to a different mechanic in Asheville to fix what they'd mis-diagnosed (after I started to get the feeling they were leading me on), and the other mechanic fixed all my problems for about 1/6th of the cost that Organic Mechanic quoted me. Frankly, they just have a hip image that they use to take advantage of hipsters who don't know much about cars (making fun of myself here). This was a year ago, so maybe they've fixed things, but as of a year ago this was the worst mechanic I have ever been to, hands down. Totally negligent. read more

There's always one thing you leave behind when you move: a parent, a friend, a church, a school. When I moved away from Asheville, I left the Organic Mechanic behind. These are the most qualified, communicative & helpful mechanics I've ever met, not to mention some of the most worthwhile human beings you can choose to do business with. You never have to worry about being cheated here. They get the work done promptly & thoroughly. They keep you updated on all adjustments & fixes. The cherry on top: they're ecologically minded. They recycle car parts you never knew existed, much less knew could be recycled. If all that isn't enough, they're just plain nice. I used to live within walking distance of their shop, & on multiple occasions, I took my dog with me to drop off or pick up the car, & we both got nothing but smiles. Organic Mechanic saves your car & the planet; what more could you ask for? read more

I called last Monday to make an appointment for new brakes and an oil change on Friday. I was told that they didn't have a waiting room so that I should find someone to pick me up and drop me off later on Friday when it was done. I dropped the car off at 8am when they told me to and around 2pm they called me to give me a diagnostic (I'm not sure what needed to be diagnosed, since I came for new brakes and an oil change) and ask me what I wanted done. I said brakes and oil change...they said they would order the parts and do that. Then nobody called me for the rest of the day to tell me that it was going to take more time or that my car was done...closed Saturday and Sunday, which I did not know... I do not know anybody in this city as I just moved here and no Uber/Lyfts available, so I missed three days of work. On Monday morning I called at 8:30am and they said the parts would be in at 9am....I told them I was expecting my car three days ago, so he said that he would mark that it needed to be done "ASAP".....no call until 4pm...ASAP my ass...saying that my car was ready, and nobody addressed the fact that I waited four days to get an hour's worth of work done after I had made an appointment already almost a week in advance. Taking my car here cost me way more money than what I paid in missing work and I'm lucky I didn't lose my job. read more

Thank you thank you thank you! OM took my husbands car in without notice, oil everywhere and smoking like a freight train! They very easily could've taken us for a $1200+ "ride". I mostly had good experience at the OM, but I do have two complaints. One was that they were a little expensive. I was willing to accept this since they probably dispose of their materials in a much more responsible manner than other car shops. I did have one issue that forever changed my mind about OM, which resulted in me going elsewhere for the remainder of my time in Asheville. I went in for a routine oil change once and by the end of the day, the manager had called me and said that my coolant looked like mud and that my engine was shot, car was good as dead. I was completely shocked at this, but upon getting a second opinion I realized the car was salvageable. It was an expensive process (manufacturer's defect had leaked oil into the coolant system), but it was definitely not DEAD. Not at all. I really didn't appreciate them scaring me like that. My father, who was a mechanic for 20 years, told me that it was very unprofessional to do that. I trust his opinion on cars so I never went back. read more

RUN, do not walk from this place. Avoid at all costs.. I truly wish there was a choice for negative stars for this corrupt organization. This was the second time I took my mini for service there even after regretting the first time. Apparently there aren't many decent choices in AVL for mini service. My issue on this visit is the snarky, patronizing, belittlement provided by Erica when I complained about the shop fee line item. For the original estimate of $1900 they provided, that cost was just under $27.00. For the $900 odd amount of repairs I authorized and felt most needed that amount came out to $22. Not a big thing but worth noting the inconsistencies and to have a well experienced patronizing employee not be concerned at all about a legitimate complaint but to rudely "legitimize" an erroneous charge is truly horrible. BUT WAIT... so I get into my car, after the service tech did a walk around and review of the car including starting it and running it for a bit before I got in, to find the central display completely not working. This is the central display for the radio, vehicle status, etc. When I called them out on this, more excuses, more patronizing nonsense from not one but two people. I finally became so exasperated after realizing these charlatans do not at all care about a customers concerns. Never have I been treated with the level of disrespect suffered here at anytime in my 58 years of life. They broke my car and refuse to acknowledge it. A decent, proper business would have offered to figure it out. There guys wanted more money for something they caused. Simple as that. RUN as far and fast as you can from this operation. My guess is there will be a counter to my review from the owner who by the way I asked to speak to three times but was refused that opportunity. These guys are crooks... read more

I never leave poor reviews, because I check reviews before I do business with a someone I am not familiar with. Organic Mechanic has great reviews so please know your perspective as you read on. My perspective is from 40 years worth of experience in the service world and as a manager of technicians for 18 years. My daughter is going to school in Asheville and I am not able to be there to help here with her older vehicle. The intention of her vehicle is short term (another year or so), and has the appearance of a well used peice of equipment: 2003 VW Jetta-Wagon. When she had a "no start" issue, I checked reviews online and thought that I would be placing my daughter in caring hands. I made the wrong decision. 24 hours later: Instead of diagnosing the "no start", I was given a document that contained everything they could find that would be obviously expected of an old car. No indication of why the car would not start or what system they would use to diagnose further. They only stated more time was needed. During the resulting phone call, I was read everything that was on the document (that I already read myself), I was told that another hour was needed to figure out the "no start", but the mechanic was not sure if that was definite. I was told that even after they found the "no start" problem, I still had all these other issues. I was almost talked into scrapping the car right there and telling my daughter she was out of luck until we could find something else. I made the decision to move forward with diagnosing the "no start" with a max budget stipulation. A few days later, I received a call stating it was the ignition coil. When I asked what the cost was, I was told that the service manager had to step in because the mechanic took 3 hours to diagnose something that should have taken 1 hour. There was to be a price adjustment as a result. He threw his mechanic under the bus as if the mechanic was not a representative of the establishment. So that guy will still be working there at the customers expense. *fun fact: The state of NC does not require any certification for the person working on your car. It is up to you to know who is qualified or not. Small claims court decides the negligence of poor service. That includes the guy who bolts your wheels back on your car with proper torque/or not.* They did adjust the price, but $500+ later, the car was returned to my daughter with a new ignition coil. She drove it back to campus and did not want to tell me it was still not running correctly. The next day I directed her to go to Sam's Automotive Repair to have it checked. She limped into there shop. In 1.5 hours they diagnosed fouled plugs and did a wire/plug replacement and treated her very personable. The difference in experience is that if you want that organic experience, you should go to Organic Mechanic, but if you want the problem solved, you should go to Sam's. I do not doubt that they have helped people, but I would say that they may not be the perfect choice for every situation. They seemed very overwhelmed by such a simple request. read more

I have a 2005 Volvo XC90 with over 150,000 miles on it. I've been using Organic Mechanic exclusively for routine maintenance for the past two years. When required, I've had their diagnosis/advice on non-routine maintenance problems confirmed via second opinions. As an example, during a recent maintenance issue with an ignition coil, OM advised I had a problem with my right front transfer casing. At first, they thought it was a wheel bearing issue, which they could fix but, upon further investigation, they identified a leak in the transfer casing as the problem. They don't do transmission work, so I went to Jack Smith's Transmission. They also thought, after a test drive, that it was a wheel bearing problem but, upon putting the car up on a rack, identified the problem as the transfer casing. read more

I have been a loyal customer for 10 years. I've had 4 different cars routinely serviced in that time. They always provided the best customer service. Honestly tops in town. A little expensive but trust worthy and friendly. The last time servicing my wife's suv they scratched the paint getting the grill off. Now they did admit to the damage and would fix it. I considered it a honest mistake and felt good about how they handled it. Most recently I called about my suv and was greeted by the rudest person I have ever encountered in customer service! Thinking I would be speaking with usually friendly crew... this customer service was beyond rude. I was mocked, made feel like a complete moron and at one point laughed at. I was literally in shock ! She didn't care about my 10 years of loyal repeat business. I have literally spent thousands of dollars here. The issue was I wanted a mechanic to give a ball park idea of price of a repair so I could get money in order due to Covid. I am a small business owner. Which I also expressed to her. The repair I am guessing would be in the 600-1k range. I am completely aware of their polices and was completely fine with them diagnosing the issue but just wanted an idea of price. I know what wrong. I have never been treated more rude in my life by any customer service. This type of entitled rude attitude doesn't belong at this business. After these last two experiences I would suggest going somewhere else. Because this is not the Organic Mechanic I have been using for a decade ! Long time customer no more read more

This is truly one of the best (if not THE best) service centers I've ever encountered. I was on a family trip to NC from PA when our Saab experienced a coolant leaking problem. The mechanics at Organic Mechanic did the job quickly and for a reasonable price. However, the best part of the experience was the generosity and courteous service we received. The staff took us into downtown Asheville while our car was being fixed so that we could see the sights and have lunch. I AM ONE VERY UNHAPPY ORGANIC MECHANIC CUSTOMER !!! Unfortunately I've been given no alternative to but to take my business elsewhere. Here are the facts: First of al I've been a customer for over a year and half now...so I'm not a disgruntled new customer...I've actually had a good relationship with them up til now !! (the un-returned phone call thing has happened before with them though) I emailed Organic Mechanic on Thursday asking for a detailed estimate for timing belt replacement as well as a myriad of other things. No response. I call Monday morning around 11am and get Voicemail...and leave a vm explaining that I had emailed asking for an estimate and not gotten a response. This apparently made no impact because Tuesday at 3:30pm I had to call again due to no returned phone call (despite their vm stating "WE WILL RETURN YOUR CALL") and get Jay on the phone. I ask what was up and explained that I had neither my phone call or my email responded to. I got no apologies...just "We were busy after the holidays" . Jay had my email request because he was then reading from it. I asked for some additional things to be added to the estimate and was promised an email later that afternoon. One week later still nothing. My thoughts : As a business owner myself...I can say things do fall through the cracks...but cmon ! Phone calls get answered within 24 hours-PERIOD ! My take away... after 3 attempts at trying to give them my business and still nothing...that's a business that's heading for the rocks or just doesn't give a shit....which is it Organic Mechanic ?? SO...if they're that busy or they simply don't care ...think about how they're going to handle working on your car...it all ties together !! The Honda dealership told me they couldn't get me in for a week, and another mechanic told me he would need at least two hours of labor to get the console out.
