Every time I move I have to Yelp to find a new salon, and considering I've moved 3x in the last year that happens a lot. Now living in Forest Hills, I wanted to find an excellent salon that isn't too NYC expensive and gives a great cut. The salon is very clean and the staff very welcoming. You can tell they get to know their clientele like family, which was the first thing that makes me want to go back. I like how the salon works - one of the assistants gives you a wash and may dry your hair, but Oren, the owner, always does your cut. It is definitely comforting to know that the head stylist will always be doing your hair! Oren was sweet and kind; we talked about my hair for a minute before he set to work. He listened to exactly what I wanted while at the same time adding in his own opinions to see what I would consider (reason #2 I'm going to come back, I feel that stylist input is key to having a good cut, and I hate it when stylists just do as you say even if they know it won't suit your hair or face shape). He took his time and worked like an artist, and the cut is amazing (the third, and final, reason I am coming back)! I am very happy with it - he brought life back into my hair! The price isn't outrageous - my cut was $71, which is OK for NYC standards. He also offered for me to come in every 2 weeks to get my bangs trimmed for free (he almost begged me not to cut them myself, so sweet!) and considering they are just down the street from my new apartment, I will definitely be doing so! When I moved to Forest Hills from the city I was anxious about finding a good salon near my apartment. I took a chance on Oren Sassoon because I thought the salon looked chic and it is a Kerastase salon. I really lucked out. I have been going for about a year and a half and Oren does a great job on my cut and color and he really listens to what you want (both in terms of style and budget) instead of doing his own thing. I have super thick, wavy hair that is not easy to manage. I get tons of compliments on my cut and color. The pricing isn't cheap, but in my opinion it is on par with the level of service. I have never been pressured into buying products or services. There is a service charge for paying with a credit card so try to bring cash if possible. read more

I had been here once before, some time back in April, and was very happy with the job that was done. While Oren was not at the salon, the lady who took care of me (Norma?) did a fabulous job and was done in about 40 minutes. I know that sounds like a long time, but I have really curly hair (3b/3c), which is also thick. I figured this would be OK since Oren has curly hair and his salon carries Kérastase which is a curly-haired line. Because I was happy with my first cut, I went back today to get another haircut at this salon. I had an appointment at about 1:30, and was seen at 1:45 which is OK.. I mean, I know some things take a long time. I went in for a haircut and blow dry, and really enjoyed my shampoo since it was relaxing. While I was getting my hair washed, I also got a masque put in my hair (Kérastase Oleo Relax), even though I did not ask for it. I already use this product at home, and haven't seen many results with it, but I figured they're the specialists, so why not? After the shampoo, followed my haircut, which was done by Oren himself. He had a lot of recommendations for my hair, which I really appreciated. He even took the time out to give me some samples for my hair. My hair cut was followed by a blow dry, which Oren started, then a young woman continued, then Oren took over, then finally the young woman (Julie?) finished. I was not very happy with the lack of continuity in the blow dry. The young woman was very nice and personable and she did a great job, but because two different people had been working in my hair, the blow dry was uneven and frizzy. As soon as I stepped out onto Austin Street, my hair looked as though I had been struck by lightning... and I paid $80 for that! I cannot state enough how nice Julie(?) was. She took the time to listen, to ask questions, to speak to me, and to blow dry all of my hair. Even though the end result wasn't as I expected, she was a gem of a stylist, and i would definitely recommend her even if it's just for the conversation. It says a lot about customer service when you're not happy with the result, but would recommend the person, huh?! The salon is not as experienced with curly hair as they should be for being a Kérastase salon. I have gotten my hair cut and blow dried in curly hair salons in half the time and with a better end result. IF, however, you have loose curls or straight hair, you should definitely come over! read more

This review is well overdue! The yelp reviews are not exaggerating about Oren Sassoon. I originally had an appointment for 6:00pm which turned into almost 6:30pm because they were so busy (it was worth the wait). I did a deep conditioning and a simple haircut. Oren is very attentive to his costumers and listen to your wishes which is a rare thing to find. Although I did not require a hard cut I left extremely happy with the result. My hair is also a lot healthier after the deep conditioning and Oren's recommendations on how to treat my hair better helps a lot to keep my hair from return to it's previous level of dryness. Absolutely recommend seeing Oren, he is great! read more

I wanted to see how the hair cut was in a month or two before reviewing. Some haircuts look great for a week, some for only a month. While yes, my layers have of course grown our and I'm way over-due for a haircut - I don't have a single split end - 6 months later!!! I have to say that makes for one of the best hair cuts of my life. I had Oren specifically cut my hair. He was great and I will be back again (soon)! read more

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this place. I was nervous putting my trust in someone other than the girl at my original salon back home but I took a leap of faith and Oren did an amazing job. I felt taken care of completely. Shouly washed my hair promptly after arriving and I only had to wait a few minutes before Oren finished up with his previous client. When it was my turn, we spoke about my hair and he listened intently. Oren had suggested layers in my plain Jane straight hair and I went for it. I love this cut! He breathed new life into my hair! The only awkward thing about this place is there's hardly a reception area and no receptionist. Oren and Shelly do it all. So if they're both busy blow drying someone's hair, as someone walking in for the first time, you're not sure where to go until they greet you and point you to a chair in the back sitting area. I suppose regulars are used to this but initially, I was confused because I'm used to other salons where stylists are pretty focused on the client in the chair and not having to pause to take appointments. Overall, I had a pleasant experience with this salon. Prices are comparable to most salons and more importantly, I feel fabulous. It's amazing what a great cut can do! read more

Used Yelp as a means to find a new hair salon and figured "why not try this place, it's got a lot of positive reviews" and I can't say I'm disappointed. Oren is very courteous and treats his customers with respect. He's not pushy or overly talkative as some hair stylists can be. He apologized for me having to wait about an extra 20 mins. which was not a big deal to me because 20 mins. is not really all that long. Although it was my first time going to this salon, I could tell he knew what he was doing. He gave me the exact haircut I wanted after I showed him a picture. I've always had medium length hair and wanted a big change. I wanted a chin-length blunt hair cut which I have never done before and I was afraid it might end up being cut too short but Oren made it the perfect length, not too short and not too long either. The staff they were excellent they offer me food and drinks, very friendly and helpful. I would never return!! I moved into the neighborhood from Manhattan and was looking for a place to get high-lites. The owner convinced me not to get high-lites and get a single process instead,,,,,,I wasn't clear why. The color turned out to be a greenish/red,,,,,just awful. He didn't even do the undergrowth,so my hair was dark underneath. One big disaster,,,,,,I returned the next day for corrective color, and he said he would do it for a fee.
