This is a small salon on 71st Rd near Austin Street and it's easy to miss it when you walk by on the street. Inside, it's clean, organized, and calm with friendly and professional staff who really listen to what you want for your hair and offer you drinks there or will even run out for coffee if you are having your hair colored or another longer service. I've worn my hair short for years and Vilma gives me a great short cut with highlights that mask my grey hair without the regular maintenance that full coloring would require. This was my first time going to this salon and it was definitely different than I expected. I saw all these great photos and decided to take the chance at a new salon. I showed a reference picture to the lady and she got to work. She then washed and toned my hair and it definitely didn't look anything like the picture I had showed. It was already late in the day and I had somewhere to be. I let the owner know that I didn't like the result and he let me know to come in the next day so they can revise it because I was busy that same day. I came back and showed her another photo that she could possibly do with the color that was in my hair and she fixed my hair. Came in on a whim while I was in the neighborhood and asked if they take walk ins and was immediately assigned a hairdresser. They worked on my hair for around 1 hour before Oren stepped in to give it some volume. I walked out slightly dissatisfied due to the length of my hair-- asked for a lob (long bob) and got a bob cut instead. Once I came home and my sisters took a look at my cut she pointed out that my front had an "n" shape. Took a look at the mirror and saw it instantly. I always go to Velma. She is awesome at cutting hair. I usually ask for long layers and she does a great job every time. She also finishes with an awesome blow out. Makes my thin hair look volumized and full looking. It can get very chaotic at times bc it is a small space with only 4 hair dressers so appointment is definitely required. I'm writing this after my second time here. I loved my haircut the first time. It was exactly like the picture I showed Susan I think her name is. The second time was good too as Velma was more chatty and wanted to get to know me. However the cut wasn't like the first time. It was much shorter and I didn't get the long layers like I wanted. At the salon it didn't look bad but after I washed my hair I saw it look choppy. My hair is curly and frizzy so now I have to blow it out after every wash which is a hassle for me. But everyone at the salon is nice and know what they are doing. I've been a customer here for many years. Oren has always given great cuts. But lately the attention has been lacking. I went to get my usual cut and I felt it was rushed. He didn't check to make sure the layers were all even at the end like usual. I assumed bc he's always done a great job that it was fine and he was just in a rush that particular day. Sure enough a few days later a coworker of mine commented that my hair was cut unevenly with some lengths shorter than others. I didn't bother going back because the last two times I felt they were rude and inattentive. Sadly I'll be finding another salon. Amazing!! I had really wanted to dye my hair purple for a long time and so I went in for a consultation and made my appointment for about a week later. Now I've had my purple in for about a week and I have loved every second of it! Shouly was the absolute sweetest. She definitely put in the extra effort to ensure my hair was exactly what I wanted and that it was done carefully. The entire process of lightening my hair and then dyeing it took a while but she got me coffee while I waited and even ran out to my car to make sure the meter wasn't up. The rest of the staff was really great as well. After the dye was washed out, she gave me a trim and curled my hair. It was obvious it had been done professionally. To be honest, I'm not sure why this salon has such highly rated reviews considering the haircut I got from Rose. I waited a week to see if I could forgive the salon for the haircut and service I received but I still can't forget about it. Several times throughout the cut, Rose walked away with no explanation to answer the phone and talk to other clients; I didn't appreciate the lack of focus and attention. I could have maybe forgiven the unprofessionalism if my haircut had come out right. I asked for a trim and layers and ended up with what looked like a modern day mullet. The shortest layer on top was cut so much shorter than the longest layer with minimal to no blending between layers. I don't even know how else to describe the fail of a cut I received so I will just let the pictures speak for itself. The worst part of it was I didn't know how bad it was until the next day when I washed out all the curls. Side note: I don't know what time period my stylist thought we were in - but huge Farrah Fawcett curls did not look good on me. Besides feeling embarrassed when I walked out, it made me feel like Rose didn't understand what works for different clients. So on to the DISCLAIMER. I contacted the salon owner, Oren, via email who was apologetic and offered to fix my cut free of charge. I appreciated his quick response and his offer. I happily called him back but after a few calls back and forth I felt he didn't understand (or care about?) the urgency of the situation because he was unwilling to be even the slightest bit flexible with his schedule. He kept telling me to come in the morning even after I explained I could not because I would be at work. Ultimately, I felt it wasn't important enough to him to fix it and I really didn't want to go to work with a mullet for 3 days so I cancelled the appointment and had to pay AGAIN to have it fixed elsewhere. Mind you, my regular stylist there took the last minute appointment AND stayed 20 min past closing to fix my hair. Shoutout to Marco at Cutting Edge Salon in Manhattan! I wouldn't have posted this review had Oren made a bigger effort to follow through with his offer. Welp, you live and you learn...so much for finding a stylist closer to home. **Edit to comment on the response ** I guess in the end, it will be my word against Oren's. I never asked for a morning appointment as I work from 9-5. I reached out via email the day after my cut on Sunday, 3/4/18 and asked to come in that day - Oren said no, his schedule was booked. I asked to come in Monday evening, Oren said no, he was leaving early. He then offered Thursday but I asked if he had anything earlier so we settled on Tuesday evening. As mentioned earlier, I didn't want to wait 3 days to have a bad haircut fixed. I apologize that I don't seem to know what "anytime that was good for you" meant... And yes, I ultimately cancelled the appointment (I didn't just not show up) because the whole ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth and I no longer felt like giving Oren Sassoon another chance. read more

I've been here twice, as the price for a wash, cut and blow dry is fairly reasonable and Vilma did a decent job on both occasions. However, it shouldn't really be too challenging because I just went for trims plus blowouts - that was the extent of it (no color). Both times Vilma has rubbed me the wrong way; she is too presumptuous for my liking and proceeds to ask inappropriate questions. She had asked if my father was bald based on my hair since I said my hair was similar to his. My hair type is fine but I'm far from balding. What is the point in even asking that? If she had followed up and talked to me about treatments, sure, that's understandable. I'd be receptive. But just to ask me for no reason at all? She also pointed out all my gray hairs. I get it, I'm in my 30's now and I'm getting them. I only have a few strands, not many. And certainly not enough grays to color my hair. She was also asking questions about where I lived and assumed it was another neighborhood based on my ethnicity. Rude. All in all, I will not be returning here. I'll go somewhere else in the neighborhood and save myself from dealing with a hairdresser that makes me feel uncomfortable. read more

Im giving 1 star just because of a nice staff. Very friendly... otherwise i would not give any because when i came home i wanted to cry! Im very- very sad! This is not what i asked for. My hair was very long, and i asked Oren not to take a lot, i asked him several times before he started. I asked him to do long layers for several times. He showed me how long he will take which was fine and i trusted him assuming he is following what he showed me. Until i realized what happened he was finished, because it took him literally 10-15 min. At the end all stylists take the mirror and show their work from all angles, which he never did. I asked him if he can show me my back but he just showed with his hands in the air what shape it is. And honestly it is not "U" shape as i asked him for and as he told me. Im not a type of a person who does a big scene. I try to avoid arguments that is why didnt think much and was still hoping that i got a decent haircut. But he chopped my hair too short. I understand if the haircut comes out shorter than what you've expected but still nice and done good. But i got short ugly chopped haircut. It looks very awful, butchered. I came in for a haircut without an appointment, and was accommodated by Vilma. I was in dire need of a cut after almost two years but was also anxious due to how long it had been since my last visit to the salon. Vilma was wonderful! She made light, pleasant conversation with me throughout my shampoo and cut that really pit me at ease. More importantly, she listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly that. I left feeling beautiful, and the final price was extremely affordable and fair. I actually returned a week later, this time with an appointment, for a blowout. Since Vilma was not available, I was allocated another stylist, whose name I think was Rose. She did a nice job on my blowout as well. The salon is on the small side, but very sleek. The clientele seems to be very loyal, as I witnessed lots of animated and spirited conversations that lead me to believe that the patrons have developed longstanding relationships with their stylists.
