Terrible experience. I went in for a balayage and specifically asked for an ash brown, but I left with a white/green color. I was extremely disappointed. The Saturday of my appointment the salon was overcrowded, even though I had booked in advance. The owner/manager seemed overwhelmed and spent less than 10 minutes with me. Most of the work was done by a helper. Unfortunately, the bleach was left on my hair for too long, and I'm now noticing some breakage. He was also stepping out frequently for cigarette breaks, which made it feel like my appointment wasn't getting the attention it should have. I went back the next day so they could fix it. I asked to see color samples so we could agree on the tone, but instead they seemed to pick the color themselves. I left unhappy again. To make matters worse, the owner was extremely rude and even laughed in my face when I expressed my concerns. This was a waste of $350, and now I have to go somewhere else and spend more money to fix my hair. I would not recommend this salon. read more

Booked an appointment with them a little while back to dye my hair fully ashy grey/silver. I was told that I had to be careful when washing because it was a very ashy color. So, I only washed it twice in the first week in order to retain the color for its intended event. However, I noticed that once I got to the third wash (all with purple shampoo) my hair did turn to ash blonde quite quickly. I do like the current color now but unfortunately it was not what I asked for to begin with. Overall my experience was fine and the staff were super sweet. Had the BEST Balayage ever! I was absolutely in shock with the results. Kris was my stylist and he was so attentive and knew what I wanted. I showed him two reference pictures and he matched it well. I was concerned with doing ash brown again because I had a terrible experience doing that color at a different salon; which left notes of green and orange streaks in my hair. With their summer special, I got two rounds of bleach, a cut to trim off my dead ends, color, and had it styled for only $295 (not including tip)! Not bad, just a little disappointed. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. I had texted ahead of time to make an appointment for Kevin, attached with the picture of the ideal color I wanted, which was dark blue. Over text and in person, they said it was definitely achievable. I showed up today and another female worker came up to me to help me with my hair. I then asked to make sure that I had made an appointment with Kevin and she confirmed that Kevin will be helping me. In the end Kevin only showed up to double check the color I wanted and said that was feasible. The female worker and another male worker proceeded to bleach and dye my hair. In the end, the color turned out much lighter than I had expected, which was okay since I assumed it was hard to really resemble the color in pictures. However, I got home and noticed that the bell blvd branch of Xcellent had another customer the same day who got the exact same shade that I had intended initially (wish I went there instead ). I also noticed as I examined my hair closer that there were some areas that were not dyed blue(semi-patchy), so it was gray amidst all the blue. Conclusion : I still like my hair and liked the two workers that worked on my hair, though I wish that since I had made an appointment for Kevin it would've actually been him who did my hair. *TLDR* If you are to come, I definitely recommend going through details with them so that the shade and color is what you want. Also, definitely examine every part of your hair before leaving because it's possible that certain patches are not dyed. P.S. I probably wouldn't return, or maybe if I do, I will probably check out the Bell Blvd Xcellent next time instead. First picture below is the picture for the hair color I wanted, second picture is the customer's hair that I saw for Xcellent on Bell Blvd, the third picture is my hair when I got home, and the last picture is one of the spot I found that was gray and not dyed blue. My hair was not too bad, just definitely less blue, more gray, and lighter than I had initially imagined. Update: The blue was basically gone the very next morning (no wash). I was notified that it will become less and less blue the more I washed my hair, which was completely understandable. What baffled me was that the blue was completely gone, and in its place was gray the very next day after dying it blue. Came here to see Kevin to my root touched up with balayage and it reminded me why I didn't want to go back again. My appointment was scheduled on a Saturday before an event. I arrived on time but the receptionist told me that he went out to pick up some colors from the other store so I had to wait for 10 minutes. He recommended me to get a darker color for the winter so I trusted him. My hair looked ash brown at first then now my hair color disappeared and turned into yellow after a few wash. I also had bad skin allergy reaction near my forehead and ears. The whole process took me 4 hours and he charged me $350 for my length. I would normally expect him to style my hair after coloring but he left early without saying anything so the assistant styled my hair. I was disappointed with the service and not satisfied with the hair style. The quality used to be better back in a few years back but now it just feels like a zoo with poor service. read more

The reason I am giving 1 star is because the life was SHEARED out of my hair...without any permission even if I wanted thinning. I have naturally thick, silky hair that I maintain, even with highlights, I had it very healthy. It became less than half of what it was. My hair dresser barely communicated with me, maybe due to the language barrier. I feel bad for him because of that, but I feel extremely traumatized by what is left of my hair now. But I finally decided to color it again today, couple weeks before my wedding. Came to see Wynn and he put me at ease as I was contemplating the whole process. I told him I wanted some dimension in my dark hair but still keep it super natural and that's exactly what he did. I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a new hair salon that's good at balayage on Asian hair after moving from CA to the East Coast, but this might be my new go-to. Their prices are also super reasonable and offer 20% off every weekday. My appointment was on a Wednesday and the salon was very busy so there were multiple stylists working on my hair throughout the day, but all of them seemed to know what they were doing. The stylists were also very kind and attentive. I was super happy with the way my hair turned out (see pics) and they gave me a detailed, helpful sheet on how to best take care of my dyed hair. Hopefully my hair looks okay when it grows out more -- if so, I'll def be coming back in the future! They don't allow eating/drinking inside the salon but there's a chair outside for dining if you order food delivery to the salon. read more

But it wasn't as blonde as she wanted it to be and she was shy and didn't say anything, so I booked another appointment and they fixed her hair and made it exactly how she wanted it - free of charge! I'm giving this place 3 stars because though I've had good experiences in the past, the quality of service has downgraded. My boyfriend and I came in today to do a hair cut and hair oil treatment. I have bought a year-long membership to get my hair oil treated, and all I have to do is pay for wash, dry, style and or cut. I decide to get the oil treatment, wash, dry & cut. Normally without styling is $30. When you want to do "wavy" or curly is when you'd pay $40. I didn't get it styled so I was expecting to pay $30 like I did the last time. The receptionist tried to reason with me why I would be paying $40 instead of $30 and I explained to her that previously I only had to pay $30, if your price increased there should be a sign. She finally agreed to $30 and I paid it. My actual hair service was good but customer service is average. It was my boyfriend's first time here for any service and he was seated to get his hair cut. He then showed the stylist a photo of how he wants his sides to look like and wants it trimmed very little from the top. The hair stylist lets him leave the salon looking like this. My bf was so distraught on how someone could let another person leave a shop with this $25 hair cut. I feel like this place obviously specializes in hair color services and they'but i don't think they care much about the other services they offer. read more

I much preferred my experience at this location compared to when I got similar services done at their Bayside Bell Blvd salon a few years ago. I came in for a color correction, after having grown out my bleached hair for an entire year without any touch ups. Unlike many other salons in the area that perform the balayage technique, scheduling an appointment was easy - they didn't ask for photos, a deposit, or an in-person consultation ahead of time. I arrived on a Sunday morning, and the entire process took 9 hours despite the receptionist initially telling me it would only take 6 hours because I opted for a keratin treatment as an add-on service. Their entire team was incredibly professional, attentive, and thorough the entire time. I love how my ash blonde color came out, the seamless blend from the roots, and the minimal damage done to my hair. Will definitely be coming back!! read more

I had scheduled an appointment for a weekday in order to get the 20% off discount on any services and had messaged Kevin for a rough quote as well as a photo of what I was going for. Communication was great and I was even sent a reminder the day before for my appointment. I arrived the day of and was welcomed by the receptionist Jenny who was extremely nice and offered me tea / water as I waited to be seated. The salon was extremely full and even though I was on time for my appointment, I had to wait for a previous client to finish up so a chair would free up. I would later find out that a lot of clients were booking services since many were students and going back to school. I was finally seated and Kevin had asked to see a photo of what I was going for again and so I showed him a reference photo taken from his Instagram page. It was an ash blonde with a nice natural faded balayage. It was my first time Bleaching my hair so I was super nervous but throughout the process, everyone who worked on my hair (bleaching, coloring, cutting, washing, foiling, toning) were all super nice and assuring. I opted for the olaplex treatment to be included and at the end of the process, though my hair was definitely weaker, it was not damaged or noticeably ruined which I was happy about. My experience overall was great and I loved the color my hair turned out to be. After care instructions are super clear as well! Generally wouldn't rate a hair salon which I was not a direct consumer of, however I believe the service here needs the exposure. Today I came here with my girlfriend whom had a 3PM appointment. Upon arriving we waited 40 minutes before she could even get her hair cut. I understand at times it gets busy, but don't accept appointments if you can't keep up with the demand. It leaves an extremely sour taste in customers mouth. In addition to this. There was an extremely rude interaction I had with one of the cashiers. I was just sitting on the bench waiting for my girlfriend to finish up when all of a sudden the lady from the cashier who had died blond hair on the front bangs comes up to me and just says "I need you to get up" then proceeds to wait 10 seconds before realizing she should say please. I understand if I was in the way, but as a customer/potential customer, wouldn't you think of providing better service. I have no issue getting up, just be a bit nicer. Overall - never coming back. Quality is not the same anymore. I've been here since 2020 and my first 3 experiences were great. Kevin is a master colorist and really knows hair. I haven't seen him the last 3 times I've visited and my last visit was terrible. Previously, they would explain the process to me and would advise me on what color they can achieve based on my hair quality. This last visit, that did not happen and they over bleached my hair. My hair breaks when I wash it, just with my fingers running through to lather the shampoo. They had to cut off a lot more than I wanted, and there was still a lot of split ends. I went back the next day and Kevin was able to meticulously cut my hair, to keep the length and get rid of the sit ends. However, my hair is still dry and brittle, and I'm afraid to get it wet. I texted with them to explain that it looks better after the second cut but my hair is still so damaged. After a few texts back and forth the my stopped replying. As for the color, it's suppose to be a purple ash and it came out looking very light, more like silver. Kevin did offer me a free toner to darken the color in a couple weeks, but I doubt I'll go back. Be careful who you let work on you, their skill levels vary greatly. read more

I went to this place twice. Once in 2019 for a cut & balayage and another time last week for a cut. I held off on leaving a negative review the first time but after having another bad experience I wanted to share my feedback. I originally chose this place because it was running a deal and it was more affordable than the place I went to in Manhattan (Roy @ Unfade). I learned my lesson. If you pay less, you get lower quality. In 2019, Xcellent made my hair look so green because they left the toner on for too long. I booked Kevin because he has the biggest following but Kevin didn't even touch my hair once. The cut was bad too - it looked so choppy. I also found out a year later when I got my hair fixed by Roy at Unfade in Manhattan that Xcellent had put permanent dark hair dye in my roots and that is going to affect how light my hair can get. The blend on this balayage was also terrible and it grew out so poorly (which usually does not happen), I'm so embarrassed of whoever saw my hair. It looked so cheap. Fast forward to today, I went last week for a haircut. I knew I should not have, but I thought it would be impossible for them to mess up a cut. I WAS SO WRONG. I asked for layers and curtain bangs. I don't really know what I got but it's not that. My hair looks so chopped and the bottom looks so unnaturally straight (this happened the last time I came here too). It literally looks like it was cut by knives on a chopping board. I honestly cringe when I see so many girls from my area post their hair from here... like spend the extra money and get better results... have higher standards. It's a better investment since it'll grow out naturally and look better too. I didn't leave a negative review the first time I went because everyone here is really nice... but what the heck!! I tried this place twice because my best friend, who dyes her hair here, recommended it. They may be good for a wash and hair coloring, but I wouldn't come here for a hair cut, perm, or any treatments that you want to prevent damaging your scalp or stinging your eyes. I haven't gotten a bowl/mushroom cut in decades until their stylist, who does everything and nothing well, suggested it. My mom's perm looked like ramen. I'd never bring her back, let alone try their $250 membership for hot oil treatment where you come back unlimited for $25 wash and dry for a look you want to avoid. Parking is a nightmare in this lot, which is one way and tight. there is a garage, but take your chances going in and out. Not a fan of this place at all no matter how busy this place looks. read more

Very disappointed with how my hair appointment turned out! I have been coming here for the last few years for coloring and the quality has gone downhill! I made an appointment with Kevin specifically on a weekday so it's less crowded. I asked for a balayage and haircut, specifically requested no bleaching for my hair since it's a very subtle color that I was looking for! He DID NOT communicate with me but he told his assistance to bleach my hair without me knowing! By the time I found out it's already too late. In addition, he was totally NOT attentive and he even left early without saying anything to me. I was left with an assistant who does only coloring and no one was able to cut my hair in the end so the assistant cut my hair for me. I could tell he knew nothing about haircut and he did such a bad job. In the very end; I still had to pay for the whole service when Kevin was NOT present and the front desk didn't even know how much to charge me. This is a very disrespectful way of taking my money for the service that I didn't deserve! NEVER AGAIN! On a side note: my hair got so damaged and dry as a result of the bleaching and they clearly did not know how to handle your hair with care!
