I was long overdue for a hair coloring appointment - and I'm so glad I chose DV salon to fix up my hair! I easily booked an appointment via Yelp. I asked for single process color and a bang trim. Ming was my stylist and instantly understood what color I was going for, and showed me some color samples as well. Ming and an assistant worked super efficiently, especially given that I have super thick hair. Shoutout to the woman who washed my hair too, it's not uncommon for me to leave other salons with residual soap/dye because my hair is so thick, but she washed it SO thoroughly and it felt great too! I also have to specifically mention the incredible blowout that Ming did so quickly, I got compliments on my hair later that day! He also trimmed my bangs meticulously. Steer clear of this dishonest, unprofessional, and irresponsible business. Their services and pricing lack transparency. You can't find a price list anywhere in their store or on their website. I asked for a Brazilian blowout to achieve natural straightening with a C-curl at the tip of my hair. Their Chinese stylist, Sunny, claimed that their straightening services included two types: "Brazilian" and "smooth," priced at $280 and $320, respectively. However, when checking out, he charged me $320 for the "Brazilian service." It turned out that their "Brazilian service" is not the traditional Brazilian blowout, but rather a type of hair care treatment--because my hair wasn't straightened at all after the first wash. Worst of all, my hair was still frizzy as hell. The stylist, Sunny, told me that their coloring prices range from $130 to $180. I had medium-length hair and only requested single processing. Still, he charged me $180 at checkout. Even worse, since he didn't pay attention to the differences between my roots and ends and just applied color to all of my hair, the result was very uneven after the first rinse. He noticed this and applied color again to the roots, but after the second wash, both sides of my hair still showed different shades. He claimed it had something to do with my damaged hair texture. When I flew back to Taiwan and visited my long-term stylist, he discovered even more uneven coloring throughout my hair. Not to mention, I had specifically requested no hint of green in my hair--yet it clearly had a green tint, which my stylist confirmed. Sunny from DV Hair couldn't remember my request: no yellow, orange, red, or green--just ash brown; blue and purple were acceptable. When I confronted him about the failed coloring and held him accountable, he said that everyone else loved his services except me, and that I had too many requests. Frankly speaking, if you are unable to provide the service, you should simply turn it down. This kind of coloring job certainly doesn't deserve $180 (especially with no glaze or double processing involved). The method Sunny used to give a "natural curl" to my bangs was applying a cold perm solution. I noticed there was no heat process and immediately warned him that I couldn't use cold perm, as it usually damages my hair more. Sunny ignored my warning and proceeded with the cold perm anyway. After rinsing, it was obvious my bangs were damaged, and Sunny admitted it. Yet, he refused to take responsibility for his misjudgment and unprofessional services. The store owner, David (or DV), reviewed all my conversations with Sunny and checked the surveillance footage. Still, he claimed it was just my "subjective" opinion about the results. He ignored the facts: that they lied about offering a Brazilian blowout, failed at both perm and coloring, and charged inconsistent prices. If either Sunny or David had any professionalism or work ethic, they wouldn't have charged me $320 Brazilian + $180 coloring + $75 tips = $575 with no compensation. They did offer to fix my hair, but considering the unprofessional coloring and my damaged bangs, I no longer trusted them. Plus, I'm traveling until the end of summer, so it's not feasible for me to keep my hair that way. I've since asked my long-term stylist to fix it--and now I have straight hair with a C-curl at the ends, just like I originally requested. DV Hair doesn't take credit cards--only cash or Zelle. I'm glad I paid via Zelle so I have a transaction record. Since they refused to act professionally or take responsibility during our discussions, I intend to file a complaint with New York City and New York State consumer protection agencies to help mediate this issue. I strongly urge anyone to steer clear of this business. If you've unfortunately used their services, make sure to keep your payment records to protect yourself. I had faith in Sunny and David from DV Hair and tried to resolve this issue peacefully, assuming they would be professional and acknowledge their mistakes. I was told on the phone that the price for color was eighty dollars and the cut was thirty five. This is more than what I usually pay but I thought I would give them a try. Well when I arrived for my appointment I was told that my color would be one hundred since I have long hair. I can assure you my hair is far from long. At first I said ok just give me a cut. When I thought about it I felt swindled. If you had a question on my hair you should have asked me when I called. Not wait until I get there and then up the price. This is unprofessional. I got up and walked out. I would never give my hard earned money to a place like this. I then went to Xcellent Hair Salon on Northern Blvd and got a cut and color for eighty dollars. David and his assistants are always on point with coloring my hair. First time it took awhile (10 hours) to bleach but that's because he had to do my whole head since my hair color grew out. He offers snacks, water and if needed some instant noodles! Don't ever expect a colorist to do exactly the color you want. It's all dependent on your hair color and how your hair takes to pulling in bleach. Also patience is key. He doesn't use high volume of bleach at once to make the process go faster. I went to see David a few weeks ago, and it was a fantastic decision for my hair. I've been struggling to find a good salon in NYC (that's also reasonably priced), and I'm very happy to say that DV Hair Studio will be my new go-to. David and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable. I came in with a general idea of what I wanted, along with some photo inspiration - I wanted a blonde balayage originally, but wasn't especially picky other than that. David took one look, and asked if it was alright to mix the color for me. What I ended up with was the loveliest custom honey-blonde color (it's definitely lightened a bit since the attached photo / video), and I could not be happier. I also want to note that everyone here is so nice. There's a basket of snacks by the door for anyone who gets hungry during their appointment, and David's staff also offered us water and soft drinks. They even dug up a phone charger for us when my friend and I needed one. I had previously died my virgin asian hair to a very blonde color and needed to color my roots. The estimated time was supposed to be 2-3 hours but ended up taking a bit longer than expected so plan accordingly! I wasn't bothered at all by it because they did such a good job not only coloring my roots but also giving me little snacks and water while I waited for my hair to be done. David once again did a beautiful job on my hair. This is my 5th hair bleaching in 5 years and my hair remains very healthy. I only trust David with my hair. I always love the purple lavender hair color. David was able to mix different shades of the color by the season to give a fresh look at every dye job. I'll post a few different ones I had over the years. I honestly can't pick which one I like more and I'd get tons of compliments every single time. The compliments would continue even after the purple color completely faded (about 2-3 months after) My hair color will change to a beautiful blond after the purple washed off. And because my hair wasn't damaged in the bleaching process, the blond color will still be beautiful and healthy looking. People usually just assume I dyed my hair blond! Almost walked out half way.. worst hair experience I've ever had I came in to bump up my balayage since I moved and no longer have a hair spot I asked for a blonde balayage, with brighter face framing pieces, which ended up being orange while the rest dark brown..... they tried to gaslight me by saying everything will blend after 2 washes. I asked if they can help me fix it make everything the same tone and make the rest of my hair lighter. They said yes, but proceeded to only make my face framing lighter AND ORANGE. Appointment only. Came here because my friends and I were looking to get balayage done. You can ask for a specific hair stylist and you will be asked about that once you enter the store. I was recommended to get brown balayage, but wanted purple. Purple is harder to maintain depending on how often you wash your hair. The entire process took about seven hours. There's a language barrier if you don't speak any Chinese. This location is newer and in the basement. Their old location is only a few blocks away and some websites still have their old address. We were offered little snacks closer to the end. (Cheese doodles and corn chips) Their location is very close to the heart of Flushing, Main Street. If you want some snacks during your appt, you can have friends bring you food! The store is pretty clean. There are lots of plants and the towels are constantly washed. I wish that the process of what was happening was explained to me before or during it. Thankfully my friends were also getting their hair done so I had someone to talk to. Usually hair dressers have convos but here it is more modern and the stylists didn't really talk to us. At the end of the balayage process, the hair dressers were very thorough and patient and dried our hair then curled it. After your hair is done, there is a photo room with a ring light and professional lights too. Each stylist has their own page. The stylists here are nice once you warm up to them. David is polite, knowledgeable and helpful. He won't push products to you as is common here with up selling. He focuses on your hair, is patient and accommodating. I found this hair studio through yelp and was absolutely drawn by pictures of the hairstylists' work! From past experiences, I've learned that having dark Asian hair is a challenge for some hair studios when it comes to hair coloring. I felt like I could trust DV hair studio, solely because most of their customers have deep dark Asian hair, and the hairstylists are able to lift that color to something light and beautiful. I messaged David through yelp and he quickly responded. He told me how much my balayage and cut would be, and we set up an appointment all through yelp messaging (I love not having to call to make appointments!). When the time came to mess with my hair, I showed David a picture of what I wanted. He showed me a picture of something similar and explained that it would look great with my skin tone, so I trusted him and let him do his thing. Honestly, I was very nervous bc this was the first time I decided to get a balayage done in years, and my first experience with balayage (which was NOT at DV studio; I got it done elsewhere) was a disaster. After that first experience I immediately regretted it bc of the damage it cause to my hair, and I swore to never bleach my hair again. With that being said, I put a lot of trust in David and hoped he'd bless me with a look that I'd love. The process took about 6 hours. David and his staff were very accommodating, hooking me up with WiFi, offering me coffee and water, reminding me that I could order food to the studio if I got hungry, and even handed me snacks which I thought was super nice of them! They really want their customers to have the best experience, and they understand that the process of safely bleaching dark black hair is veryyyy long. After the 6 hour wait, my hair was finally rinsed out and freed from the bleach. Looking in the mirror right after the bleach and toner were rinsed out, my heart dropped. My hair was MUCH lighter than I had expected (I imagined a very light caramel color, but it came out like an ashy platinum blonde/ grey color). I wasn't sure how I felt because I had expected something different, but I reminded myself that I let David do his own thing However after styling my hair, I fell in love. David really added dimension and depth to my hair and made this ashy blonde blend so well with my natural black hair color. I never in my life thought I could/would be pulling off blonde hair! He was kind, courteous, and incredibly thoughtful throughout the entire session. David took one look at my hair and figured exactly what I wanted. To start off, I have always wanted to get a balayage/ombre done! I have heard both wonderful and disaster stories about these techniques and so I have always been hesitant to take that big leap to actually getting it done! After much research/review reading/etc. I decided to go with DV Hair Studio and requested an appointment with David- and I am SO glad that I did! Here is my review in 5 separate criteria: Hair Service: Although I am not educated within the field of hair styling, I could feel that David does his best with every customer! I did not feel like 'just a customer' who he has to cut/color/etc. but I truly appreciated how he took his time with my haircut/color/etc. Not only was he knowledgeable but he also answered all of my questions I had (and I had quite a bit haha). They took the necessary steps to preserve my hair even though it was being tortured by getting bleached/colored. I told David up front that I had just a general idea of what I wanted and that I put my trust in him to choose the color that would best suite me! And off he went, still asking for my opinion to see in regards to color and how short to cut my hair, etc. Cost: To my understanding, these type of hairstyles do cost a pretty penny. There is always a cut off line where if you go too cheap, the quality is just not there. I believe that DV Hair Studio has that nice medium. It is not super expensive like how the inner city hair salons would charge but it isn't something I would do every day haha. Just be aware and don't forget to tip well, especially since this job requires a lengthy hands on process! :) Environment: The hair studio was located within a type of beauty store. I had to walk up and down the street a little bit to locate it (the sign is hidden by a subway entrance/elevator entrance). Once you enter, you'll see a sign leading you upstairs but the first thing you'll see is a nail salon of some sorts- keep walking! The studio is located at the back end: it is small and has a total of 3-4 seats which is why everything is by appointment, especially if you're interested in doing something that takes basically the whole day. General Service: Besides the main hair service, the general service I received during my stay was great as well! I was asked if I wanted some water, if I was hungry, etc. I commuted from Jersey to New York and skipped breakfast- the only thing I had was water all morning and a green tea bread from a bakery a couple stores down from the hair studio. When David asked me if I was hungry and wanted something, I declined his offer just because I'm the type of person who doesn't like to bother people haha A few minutes later, David comes back from a local convenience store and throws me a bag of Doritos and it was delicious! He even asked if I needed Wifi which was nice of him as well :) Uniqueness: I think the most unique part of DV Hair Studio was the magic that comes out of this small hair studio. From the outside, it is very deceiving of the skills that makes this business shine. If I didn't do my research and saw this salon, to be honest, I may not have even taken a second look. However, never judge anything by its cover and this place definitely lives up to its ratings on yelp! *Heads up: For those of you who are interested and have never gotten anything like this done before (such as I), it is a VERY LONG PROCESS. Jeong is an absolute master of color and style. I first discovered Jeong on Instagram ~3 years ago and I fell in love with his work. He's since done all my hair coloring, touch ups, and hair cuts. The first time Jeong colored my hair, we went for a gray balayage. It came out FLAWLESS. I used the purple shampoo he recommended for maintenance and I was getting compliments on my hair for even a year after despite not having the time to touch up my color professionally (sorry Jeong!). For my second hair coloring, I originally wanted to go for what I had gotten the first time but due to the earlier work and my inability to return for touch ups like I should have, the color was harder to achieve so we opted for a more natural brown balayage. It came out beautiful-- perfect for the summer! This time, I made sure to come back for touch ups. Now this review wouldn't be complete without me talking about haircuts. What? Haircuts? Seems a bit minuscule compared to the magic Jeong does with color. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Jeong is one of the most meticulous hair stylist I've ever had. His attention to detail is second to none. I have gone to Jeong for few years and shame on me forgot to review him. Looking for a great haircut, Jeong is your guy. He takes his time, and give you the most honest opinion what it will look good on you. He told me: I can cut your hair short like the way you want it. You will look great walking out of the salon, but you will hate me the next day. Therefore, I don't recommend you to cut your hair short. He also explained to me why due to my hair texture super thick and light curly on outer layers. Jeong is passionate about his job, you can tell how detail he is when he cuts your hair.
