The studio is not very big (about 8 chairs) but didn't feel crowded either. There was also wifi and a restroom that's kept clean. I found DV after searching flushing hair salons on yelp. after a quick chat with David, I booked a haircut for a Sunday afternoon. After all it's getting warm and ain't nobody got time for blow drying long hair no more! The salon is in the basement with plants everywhere, black brick walls, and young, stylish staff in athleisure wear (sneakers and oversized gray sweatshirts!) The hair wash was pretty quick and standard; I liked that they gave a black robe-like garment to cover your shirt. David was very meticulous while cutting my short angled bob, spending around 50 minutes getting the tiny stray hairs, adding layers, and perfecting the bangs. Went here for the first time back in December for a haircut with a friend. Be sure to get a price quote when you make your appointment as it's cash only!! David (the owner) was the one that had cut my hair and he recognized me when I came in again this Saturday with two other friends for coloring. I'd never dyed my hair before and was hesitant about letting just anyone color my hair. After looking here on Yelp and on Instagram (each hair colorist has their own individual handle in addition to the hair salon's!), I decided to specifically request Jeong for balayage. I had gotten a trim and had some long layers put in a few weeks prior, but my hair was still too thick. Jeong ended up thinning my hair out a little more so it'd be easier to tease and assured me that he wouldn't charge me for it. He'd told me when I made my appointment that long hair balayage ombré was $300-$350. After the cut, he told me that it'd be $350 and asked me if that was okay before his assistant and him started the bleach process. I came in around 10:30 and was done 6 hours later. Said that he cut them far too short, didn't think about how it would look for my face, and the layers were cut in a choppy and amateur way. Bottom line: maybe go to DV if you want a color. This is for the hairstylist, Jay. He apparently is a strong colorist based on other reviews and I think that in general DV could be really great for getting your hair colored but I have gone to DV a few times for haircuts and gotten mixed results. Jay was my most recent hairstylist and I honestly was very upset about how my hair turned out. I went in for a simple cut and bang trim. I explained that I liked the current shape of my hair and to just do a trim overall. I said that I normally pulled my hair back but I enjoyed having face framing layers / bangs around my face when I tie my hair up. Not ONCE did he ask me how much of my bangs did I want off. I thought he would perhaps take off a small amount and then check in with me -- I have had hairstylists who have done this before and perhaps I was spoiled. Jay TOOK OFF ABOUT TWO INCHES OFF MY BANGS. I was alarmed at how much he took off. It happened so fast and he had already cut it so there wasn't much I could do. I thought perhaps he would try and shape it so they at least blended in and integrated with the rest of my hair but my bangs ended up looking extremely blunt, short, and choppy. When I pulled my hair back, they didn't frame my face nicely -- they didn't even reach my chin and looked like little child bangs. The worst part? When I expressed to him that my bangs were too short and that I didn't like how they turned out, he LAUGHED at me. He tried to convince me that they looked better this way. He said that he didn't take that much off, only "this much" and he showed two inches length with his fingers. Two inches is a LOT for bangs! I'm sorry -- if a client is telling you that she is upset with her experience, you do not laugh and try to convince them they are wrong for feeling that way. While I understand that misunderstandings happen, I am the one that has to live with this hair. When I tried to ask if he could try and thin out the bangs so that they would integrate more with the rest of my layers instead of hanging so awkwardly, he said that he couldn't because he would have to cut more hair. I explained that I didn't want him to cut more length, just thin out my bangs to take off weight. He either did not understand due to language barriers or he did not know how to do it. Jay was also very distracted working with another stylist on coloring another client's hair and he also kept leaving me at the chair multiple times to speak to the other stylist and look at the other client's hair. I understand that salons are busy with multiple clients but I am sure this contributed to him not paying attention to my hair. I know DV Studio is known well for coloring but I am hoping my review will help them improve their customer service for haircuts. Check with your clients every step of the way before making a major cut, don't laugh and argue with them when they express that they are unhappy. Don't move so fast and distractedly between multiple clients, slow down and cut intentionally. I hope that whoever reads this review understands that I am not trying to ruin the salon's reputation but instead I am hoping to help the salon to improve. This hair salon is the best I've been to in downtown Flushing. I came in Oct, which was still in the middle of the pandemic. I was actually recommended by my hubby who had booked a hair cut appointment earlier in the day and told me if I wanted a hair cut, I'd better go to this place. This salon takes its safety protocol to another level - it is appointment only and they only serve one customer at a time. I'm pretty sure that we got the best stylist that day and sorry I didn't take down his name. I had a haircut elsewhere not long ago from an old school Hongkong stylist and as a result she gave me an early 2000's hair cut. I wanted to get a trim to get rid of the outdated big layers. The stylist here got it right away and immediately knew how to fix it. He did an incredible job to make my hair look fuller and contemporary. I absolutely loved my new hair and you know what's even more amazing? Remember the times after you wash you hair and you are never able to recreate the style you walked out the salon with. But not this time, my hair still has the style after each blow dry. I'll definitely come back again for my future hair cuts and probably a perm when the pandemic situation gets better. read more

I had an overall bad experience with David and wish I had avoided this salon. First red flag, I was given a lower price over phone but when I arrive to salon he raises the price by about 40%. Since they only take cash, I have to find the nearest bank and return to salon. I'm feeling mislead, but I tell myself "well he has good reviews and I'm already here" Second red flag, I go in for balayage highlights and I specifically ask for a long bob cut and ashy brown color for my roots. I explain to him that my natural brown hair has a tendency to turn red/brassy so I always get ash brown. End result, a straight cut and reddish brown roots. He now says he gave me long layers because I have wavy hair and a long bob would not look good. He continues to tell me he choose a chocolate brown color at the roots and denies it looks red. At this point, I'm feeling like this guy doesn't respect my requests and is deceitful. Third red flag I ignored because I was hoping my highlights would turn out nice and maybe somehow it will all come together and look decent. Unfortunately that didn't happen, instead he would leave for long periods and not communicate. This is when he did the most damage; he left the bleach on too long and fried my hair. Lets just say I was there when they opened and closed the salon, he worked on multiple other girls while I was there some of who also seemed unsatisfied. So, now I m certain he ruined my hair and can not fix it as he tries to curl over it and convince me it will look better once curled. I decline the curling and Im now beyond concerned, as he is not admitting to anything, he tells me "it's not that bad". I'm confused as to what my next step should be, as I have been dying my hair at salons for about 15 years and never experience this. He still doesn't admit to ruining my hair but offers I pay him at least 80%, mind you he quoted me $500. So I end up paying him half the amount as he is telling me how many hours he spent on my hair, etc. As soon as I paid him he completely changes, he snatches the cash and begins to yell at me that I arrived with frizzy hair to begin with and to get out of his salon and never come back. I replied it was raining and humid outside. I couldn't believe he was blaming me for the poor job he did, just rude and unprofessional. In retrospect, I should have listened, to the first red flag and walked out. I also would not have paid him, as I spent money at another salon trying to fix his mess. I also bought reparative shampoo, deep conditioners and olaplex3. The damage was irreversible; I ended up cutting about 5 inches off at another salon. As for David, I would not recommend his work or salon. His female assistant was not any better; when she dyed my roots she spoke with a bad attitude and gave me a rough shampoo rinse. Given that he is the owner and behaves so unethical, he gives the other employees the impression that it is fine to treat customers badly. read more

This is gonna be a somewhat long review but bear with me! I also will have tips at the end for those who are new to hair coloring/bleaching :) So, like most of David's customers, I too found DV Hair Studio on Yelp. A few scrolls down the photos and comments and I was convinced I finally found a place that really knows how to do hair color! I messaged DV Hair Studio on Yelp to set an appointment and David responded to all my questions/messages quickly. Before I even stepped inside the salon, I was already getting quality service. That's how I knew it would be a great experience. Anyway, getting right to the salon experience. I honestly lost faith in hair salons after several experiences of getting my hair done but leaving the place unsatisfied with the result of my hair. I've never had a colorist get the shade exactly how I want it. I showed David one of the photos of their clients from their Yelp page who had the hair color I wanted to achieve... and well he achieved it of course! I'm going to get into detail of the process for those who want to know what they're getting into: we double processed my hair with bleach + Olaplex (plus points for automatic inclusion without me asking for it!) then rinsed off to prepare with purple shampoo to tone down the brassiness of yellow blonde hair for 15 mins, then another hair treatment (I think Olaplex no.2) then David started to deposit the brown shades needed for the balayage ombré. The entire process took 7 hours, but honestly it felt shorter than that! I guess it's because they knew what they were doing. So that being said, I also wanted to note that when you get home and wash your hair a few days later, DONT be surprised if your hair doesn't look the way it did when you left the salon (all smooth and beautiful) because bleach really ruins hair. It's not the salon's work, it's the bleach. Going light with hair includes maintenance at home. So my tip for those new to this is to be prepared with Olaplex no.3 and deep conditioning hair masks to use 2x a week to help maintain the strength of your hair. This kind of hair style requires maintenance! So you gotta be committed to it Final verdict: YES go to DV Hair Studio to get the color you want to achieve! I paid $370 (I also asked for a haircut) before tips. If you're in Manhattan/Brooklyn, I do think the trip out to Flushing is worth it. Made a super last minute appointment with Jeong to get a balayage ombré done and I can honestly say it was the best decision ever. I was reluctant to get my hair done initially because of how bleached and damaged my hair already was. But after seeing Jeong's posts on Instagram (@jeongchen) of his work, I could tell he puts a lot of dedication into his clients. Once I came in, I showed a picture of the hair color I wanted. Jeong analyzed my current hair and explained the process of what would need to be done in order to achieve that color. He really cared about my hair and did not want to further damage it. After the consultation we began a 7 hr journey in which I received great service from Jeong and his assistant. I got a haircut, bleach 1x, and color. Jeong also used olaplex and oil treatments to minimize hair damage. I never once felt rushed and Jeong explained what he was doing throughout the entire process so I was never left in the dark. The entire staff was very friendly which created an inviting atmosphere as well. Once we finished, I was educated on how to maintain my hair color and keep it healthy. I've been going to David since 2017-2018, so this review is 5 years overdue. Having tried many stylists in the past (been dying my hair since 2010), I have stuck with David ever since he has first done my hair. I have always been particular about my hair color and David has always been incredibly accommodating! Starting from the beginning, David is incredibly accommodating on my various schedules especially since I've been driving from Jersey just to see him. He always pays close attention to the reference pictures I show him and the particular details regarding what color I want my hair to be. What I appreciate about David is that he's honest and tries his best to mimic the pictures but always warns that it won't turn out exactly like the picture I show. David always walks me through what he plans on doing with my hair (of course) even though he knows I've been going for a while and trust his process. He also earnestly cares about the health of my hair and goes out of his way to use less harsh products to maintain the quality of my hair. He has referred me to various products like specific shampoo's, conditioner's, and purple conditioner's. I also come to David when my hair seems particularly dry and he has used masks/treatments for my hair. What is really incredible about David is how he cares about his client's satisfaction, he is willing to re-tone my hair even after a whole session if I am not happy with the end result. This care and consideration is what I believe puts David above other hair stylists! I appreciate that he is willing to put in the extra effort to make sure I love it. An important thing to note is that I have long, thick hair, so our full head sessions usually take about 8 hours long. David is always incredibly patient, and never tries to rush the long process. We've had to start at 12pm and end at around 9pm when his shop usually closes around 7pm. I have brought family to David, and he had fixed my cousin's cut & color hair disaster in the past. David is someone I highly recommend as well as the rest of his staff. I want to give a special shout out to Kelly, David's assistant, for giving great washes and also taking the time to do my hair. She is incredibly sweet and very meticulous as well. If you want to find a place where you can consistently go to and not fight for a place on the waiting list, I highly recommend David! I have attached my numerous pictures from different timelines of my life as well as different lightings to really show off his work. This is my third time getting my hair dyed by David! He never misses and does an AMAZING job. Cannot recommend him more - I've been to multiple salons in Los Angeles and New York and can vouch that he is the best with a very reasonable price for the amount of time. Color was really nice I loved the hard work and dedication put into the process but by far the ugliest, WORST haircut I have ever experienced in my life. I had hair down to my lower back & David hacked into it like a lawn hedge because "thinner is better" I have straggly ends that look dead AFTER he took off two inches. I know lighteners damage hair. I expected that. But now I've been crying since I got back because I basically need ANOTHER haircut after just getting one. I'm losing 6 inches total because of the damage that was brought on from a dry haircut and I'm truly devastated. Come here for your balayage they do beautiful work. But please skip the cut if you want your hair in good shape once you leave. Edit: below is a picture of my hair before, after, and this morning (day after I left salon) extremely embarrassed to even be sharing this.
