I had an EXCELLENT experience getting a haircut and ombré balayage by David! After seeing some of his beautiful work on his Instagram account @dvhairstudio_david I simply DM'ed him and booked an appointment. Although I am unfamiliar with the Flushing area, the salon was relatively easy to find. It is located above a beauty store and you walk through a nail salon to get to it. I had shown David a photo of a previous client he had and explained it was what I wanted. Instead of just replicating the look on me, he took time to make recommendations for me based on my hair length and color, which I really appreciated. For those who have never gotten an ombré balayage, just know that this is a very long process because of the bleaching and also David makes sure everything is perfect. From start to finish (haircut, bleaching, toner, dry & curl) it took around 6 hours so I would suggest bringing stuff to do/eat. I didn't bring anything to eat but David kindly offered me water and food a few times during my appointment. I would definitely recommend this salon especially if you have Asian hair and are looking to have it colored. At the end of my appointment David also took the time to teach me how to properly care for colored hair. All in all, great customer service, friendly environment, and talented stylists. I highly recommend this place for ASIAN hair because David knows what to do with our dark/ hard to bleach hair (non-asian hair also welcome! This guy KNOWS what he is doing). WHY CHOSE THIS SALON: I have dark asian hair, I've gone to multiple salons and stylist who have no idea how to work with asian hair (bleaching, coloring) They always messed up my coloring or often tell me the look I want cannot be achieved because of my hair. As a Stylist David is patient. I spent 5+ hours in his salon because my hair takes a long time to bleach. He was so patient! He even went out of his way to get lunch for me. 2. HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING: Of all the countless salons I went to, not one stylist ever thoroughly explained the hair process and even gave suggestions and recommendation on what would suit my skin tone. He did! I originally wanted to do the very basic popular balayage that everyone has but he recommended that I go a beige tone balayage (totally in season! ). He constantly gave me reassurance as bleaching hair always freaks me out. 3. HAIR PROCESS: He bleached my hair, then washed and gave a free oplex treatment. When bleaching he explained that since my hair is dark it requires a long bleaching process as the orange ness and the yellow needs to be stripped from my hair. Basically after bleach my hair was platinum blonde. He used three different shade of coloring for my balayage to get the gradient look. He trimmed my hair to layer it and thin it as I have thick hair as well. 4.ADVICE BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT: Okay ladies, if you do book an appointment take some snacks as you might be there for a while (depending on what you want with your hair). Once again didnt disappoint! This is my 3rd time visiting David. The first 2 were at his old location. He does an amazing job taking care of hair. He offers his opinions in a good way. He has magic hands. Hes gentle but quick. For cutting hair and dyeing hair. I have fragile very thin hair and i was afraid to go blonde. I dont like the idea of bleaching and the burning on my scalp. But whatever david did, it was an amazing 5 hours worth it. It did not burn or itch. I know he did not burn my hair off. I did not lose any hair. I feel like after my visit my hair looks and feels healthier and more full. I had so many compliments everywhere i went. i know a few people now who are dying to visit David lol. Coming here was a pleasant experience. It is evident that the workers here pride themselves in their skills and take on many clients in a day. During pandemic times, everyone is distanced in the salon-- from the workers to the customers. The fee for my haircut was $45 flat, including a hair wash in the beginning. When I walked out, my hair was almost a different type--- still a little wavy, but little to no frizz as well. David cut my hair, and another washed my hair (sorry-- I did not know your name!) Both steps were relaxing and I can already see my hair growing out beautifully, amplifying the skill gone into the initial haircut. Thank you! This place is definitely a hidden gem! I was able to book a semi last minute appointment with a stylist the same day and David the owner responded super quick. There seems to be only 3 stylist but it was my first time so I went with the reviews of either David or Jeong. I think my stylist's name was Jeong. They spoke Cantonese and Mandarin which is good for those who doesn't speak English. The shop is located on the second floor if Beauty Lounge. They share the space with a nail salon so keep walking to the back once you get to the top of the staircase. I didn't have a preference of what kind of hair style and only wanted it short. The stylist did a great job. The only thing that bothers me was the photography lights that we're blocking the door. A little challenging getting into the shop but overall, it was a great experience. Definitely coming back to change up my hair once it grows back. $45 for wash and haircut. I tipped about $10-15. Worth it ! read more

The short story: if you're looking to get the color of your dreams, you need to go here. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The long story: I spontaneously decided to cut and color my hair before leaving for vacation a few days ago. I had had bad experiences in the past with hair color and highlights, so I did a lot of research beforehand. After scrolling through the pictures of what David and his staff do, I knew I'd found my guy! I reached out via Yelp and he David got back to me within 5 minutes. He asked me a bunch of questions about my current hair and what I was looking for, which I appreciated because it made me feel like he was really listening to what I wanted, whereas in the past, colorists seemed to understand what I wanted, but then did their own thing anyway. I was able to book my appointment for the next day, and David was more than understanding when I texted him to let him know I was running a few minutes late. Initially I asked him for balyage and a trim but was also wondering about ombré balayage and more of a cut. He explained the difference between the two types of color and showed me pics from his collection of each. I also showed him several pictures of what I was envisioning. I decided to go with the balyage ombré and an a-line cut to my shoulders. David explained each step of the process as he went and could not have been more accommodating, asking if I wanted water, wine, and even something to eat after I'd been there for a few hours (the process takes time!). The entire process was so relaxing that I fell asleep during several points. When all was said and done, my jaw almost hit the floor. The color was literally PERFECT and exactly what I had envisioned, and the cut was equally as amazing. I wanted it to look more natural than not, and I shared with David that the color looked like what my hair used to look like at the end of the summer as a kid, after having spent hours in the sun, with perfect golden goodness throughout. I even said that my hair looked better than it did on my wedding day (which was when it was highlighted too lightly by the person who had done my hair). I fist came across this place from Yelp, and got a response very quickly when I reached out to schedule an appt. So yesterday, I had my first experience going to this salon, my hair stylist was Jeong. He set up an appt with me on the phone and asked me what I was looking for and to provide pictures of my current hair so that he could give me a quote for my appt. I got my hair cut and balayage'd by Jeong and let me tell you he really worked his magic and transformed my hair to feel so fresh and healthy. The process took roughly 5-6 hours but he did not overbook or have several clients in at a time so he was able to spend undivided time really working on my hair and not letting product sit in my hair for too long (which has happened with previous places I've gone to) As for Covid restrictions, I was one of 3 people in the Salon for the whole time I was there. Everyone was required to wear a mask and there was ample space between me and the other two customers. If you are going to David for balayage/ombré, please READ this review. I made an appointment with David to get silverish/grey color. It wasn't my first time doing balayage/ombré and it took about 8 hours to get the color. The first result was okay but the color immediately turned into yellow/blue color after two days. So David offered to tone it again for me in order to the color I wanted. Two days ago I went in for my second time - toning. A couple hours before my appointment, he texted me and asked if I could come in another time because he was busy. I was very surprised because I've made an appointment to come in for toning a week ago. I have never had any salon/stylist telling me to change my appointment like the way he did. I told him I couldn't because I'm going away for a trip this weekend. - Very unprofessional We discussed what I wanted and I specifically said I wanted Silver/Grey color and please get rid of the yellow / blue. After about 5 hours, I almost burst into tears because my hair was completely DRIED/DAMAGED - I'd say my hair was a combination of blue & grey. He completely damaged the ends and now I have very uneven color/ volume (due to lost of hair during the process and so much of my hair melted off ). I was obviously furious because I wasn't getting the color I wanted. He was trying to convince/ comfort me by telling me the blue will be washed off etc. I have NEVER been to any salon / had any stylist telling me to wash the color off. If I am paying to get a color done at a salon, I want the color DONE! Moreover, while he was blow drying my hair, he said "I shouldn't have helped you to tone the color." - with an attitude. If you can't even do your job right, why are you giving your customer an attitude when they are not satisfied with the result!? - Again very unprofessional & rude. I went to get half of my hair burned off and over processed. They should've known if my hair was in a condition to be bleached/ colored and should've been honest. I honestly can't even tell you how frustrated I am right now - I have been to three other salons and trying to get it fixed but they all said my hair is too damaged to even do anything at this point. I am too embarrassed to even look at my hair and I have to wear a beanie everyday. PLEASE - if you have fragile/damaged/colored hair, think twice before doing anything with your hair. I've been going to David since 2017-2018, so this review is 5 years overdue. Having tried many stylists in the past (been dying my hair since 2010), I have stuck with David ever since he has first done my hair. I have always been particular about my hair color and David has always been incredibly accommodating! Starting from the beginning, David is incredibly accommodating on my various schedules especially since I've been driving from Jersey just to see him. He always pays close attention to the reference pictures I show him and the particular details regarding what color I want my hair to be. What I appreciate about David is that he's honest and tries his best to mimic the pictures but always warns that it won't turn out exactly like the picture I show. David always walks me through what he plans on doing with my hair (of course) even though he knows I've been going for a while and trust his process. He also earnestly cares about the health of my hair and goes out of his way to use less harsh products to maintain the quality of my hair. He has referred me to various products like specific shampoo's, conditioner's, and purple conditioner's. I also come to David when my hair seems particularly dry and he has used masks/treatments for my hair. What is really incredible about David is how he cares about his client's satisfaction, he is willing to re-tone my hair even after a whole session if I am not happy with the end result. This care and consideration is what I believe puts David above other hair stylists! I appreciate that he is willing to put in the extra effort to make sure I love it. An important thing to note is that I have long, thick hair, so our full head sessions usually take about 8 hours long. David is always incredibly patient, and never tries to rush the long process. We've had to start at 12pm and end at around 9pm when his shop usually closes around 7pm. I have brought family to David, and he had fixed my cousin's cut & color hair disaster in the past. David is someone I highly recommend as well as the rest of his staff. I want to give a special shout out to Kelly, David's assistant, for giving great washes and also taking the time to do my hair. She is incredibly sweet and very meticulous as well. If you want to find a place where you can consistently go to and not fight for a place on the waiting list, I highly recommend David! BOOKING THE APPOINTMENT: I found DV through Yelp. They had the most impressive portfolio and it was clear they really knew how to color Asian hair. I was able to reach out and book an appointment within a single day through Yelp. David was very responsive. He gave me a reasonable quote through the pictures I showed him for color alone. THE CONSULTATION: I got there early morning and David and his team were already awaiting my arrival. The salon itself was sleek, modern, and pristine. David sat me down and I showed him some inspiration pictures. I was a little nervous at first because I haven't bleached my hair in a long time and the last time I hair done, I had major breakage. I would be trusting him with virgin hair that I babied and grew out for 5 years. I was immediately comfortable because David was very honest, warning that it may not be exactly like the pictures I wanted so he swiped through his own work and showed kind of look he could attain with his style of application. I think it was thoughtful for him to have this conversation just in case I was particular, but his work was all very beautiful (and still looked much like the photos I brought if I'm being honest) so I trusted him to do my hair with what he thought would look best. THE COLOR PROCESS: David REALLY cares about the results and how the customer feels about the hair color and cut. He frequently checked in throughout the process to see if I was liking everything. He also made sure I was comfortable, offering snacks and water throughout the 6 hour long process. His other stylists were also enthused and excited for the final results and helped him out and checked the bleach carefully, reapplying when necessary. They were also extremely careful not to snag my fresh piercings and also put a mini shower cap like thing over my ear to protect it! The final results post bleach went from virgin Asian black hair to icy blonde LEVEL 9 in just one sitting. I was in awe at the skill. He then toned it down to a beautiful ash blonde (level 7 or 8). HAIRCUT: I had minimal breakage after the bleaching and David cleaned up my hair cut (which was also impressive, quickly adding layers to lighten the movement of my hair and trimming deadends) and it revitalized my hair. He also reshaped my bangs to be more flattering. The pictures attached are photos David and his team took for me in their photo room. They were so awesome, and were very proud of their work, admiring the final color. It was so endearing! I actually found David across instagram's discover page. When I scanned through his feed and looking at posts tagged by his customers... I was convinced he really does know what he's doing and keeps his customers happy. I immediately sent him a message via instagram and he responds quickly and answered all my questions. This time I know it's going to be worth it. And it is! Coloring: the whole process took 6ish hours. He lets you know what he's doing before he touches your hair and explains it so well as to our usual questions as custodian of why's and how's. That's a big plus for me. He and his staff is very thoughtful, when I had to sit on the chair for 3-4 hours for the bleaching, they immediately let me know it will take long. So they connected my phone to their wi-fi, told me that whenever I felt hungry to tell them so they could get something for me (but I just went for uber eats and delivered it straight to the salon) and that tells that they really care for their customers' comfortability. Haircut: even though I just asked for a trim because I want to keep the length, it's not just a cut straight through. He really gets in your hair and makes sure it has a shape that would justify the balayage. Some of the salons I've been to was just cutting straight through the length I showed them how I want and that's it. But David is not like that. Plus: he gives you a 5-minute mini photoshoot to enjoy his masterpiece and your hair. Complete ring light set up! That means they are serious about their craft. Verdict: YES, DEFINITELY. The overall experience was fun! Didn't really felt that I spent 6hours in the salon. The money was well spent and was definitely worth it! He will be my regular stylist now. When I went to another salon to have it fixed, they gasped audibly and tried to make me feel better but they admitted that my hair had been butchered and would take a long time to grow out and back. I am still shocked at how great of a job David did on my hair. The compliments of my balayage are non-stop. My coworkers love the ambiguous shade of ash blonde/grey that was done. I debated for a couple weeks about what color I wanted and which salon. I wanted to stay closer to flushing and not go out to soho. I looked at the Instagram page of color director David and I liked how he didn't just do the same shade of ash blonde for each person compared to the other salons I was debating. I asked for a coppery blonde and David suggested lighter that would match my skin tone better. I was open to it and said ok. Originally he suggested all grey/silver but I had to decline for work purposes haha. He suggested a trim since my hair is quite thick and the colors would show better with more layers. TBH I loved the simple trim. He didn't take length off, just made more layers. I may change my stylist. After almost 7 hours later...masterpiece. It came out wayyyy better than I imagined. Did my very first balayage with David and I was more than happy with the final results! I was initially not very sure about how it will turn out or if my hair can even be bleached and colored again at all since I had my hair dyed black about a year ago. I had decided on a whim to color my hair and am so glad I worked with Jeong for my first time doing bayalage. He was extremely careful about making sure the roots wouldn't be damaged and that we were coming as close to the color as possible without sacrificing hair health. I could tell he cared a lot about my hair from his recommendations on color and aftercare. He was so friendly during the whole process and made the whole experience very pleasant. He and his assistant were very skilled - the colors they mixed were beautiful and applied with excellent technique. I will definitely be coming back for touch ups. I came across this hair salon on Yelp. Based on the reviews on here, I decided to check it out. I love that appointments can be made through Yelp so you don't have to call anyone. They responded to my message very quickly and I was able to get in the next day. I am a very classic gal when it comes to my hair. My usual go to is root touch up (for my uncontrollable gray hair) and a trim. Although this is very simple, I am very very extremely picky about it, also adding to the fact that I hate sitting to wait for my hair to be done. DV exceeded my expectations. They were very punctual and got started on my hair right when I arrived. I'm picky about my color, I usually find that a lot of Asian hair salons do not have the black color that I like. I prefer a dark black (but not jet black) that has absolutely no brown tint in it. My hair color turned out perfectly here. It was the exact color that I like and all my gray hair was covered. For my haircut, I asked for a pretty blunt finish, which I also find hard to get at Asian salons. They usually would give me some kind of layered tail look. The cut that I got at DV turned out perfectly and made my hair look so much healthier. After the coloring and cut, they blew dry my hair straight. I have a lot of hair and my hair is very thick so I appreciate them taking the time to make sure that each strand is smoothed out. FYI - they do not take credit cards here. If you do not have cash, they do take Venmo, which is super convenient. I've spent the last year looking for a good hair salon that I could go to to upkeep my hair. I had an amazing experience with DV Hair Studio and particularly with my hair stylist, Jeong! I definitely recommend him for anyone who is looking to dye or cut their hair. I have never gotten my hair professionally dyed before and always tried to do it myself, which left my hair in horrible condition. I came to Jeong with the desire of getting bleach blonde highlights/balayage however he let me know that my hair wouldn't be able to handle it (especially because I used a dark box dye which is hard to remove), which I knew going into it. I really appreciated his advice because I could tell that he wouldn't compromise his client's hair at any cost. He is clearly very experienced and knew what would be best for me! Jeong ended up bleaching my hair to get it as light as he could while still maintaining the health of it, and then toned it out with a beautiful ashy brown color. My hairstylist JAY was really good! That i did not feel any discomfort or pain during the whole process (my personal endurance is good). Another thing is that JAY's hair bleaching technique is very good. It's also important to communicate your desired hair color with your hairdresser in advance! At present, there is no point for me to step on thunder, and the master's craftsmanship is very good. To the back, I asked to float my eyebrows and found that they were too light, because my skin color was a little bit black and yellow. Went back for the third time recently for new color. I was surprised my hair is not too damaged. FYI I have bleached it every 5 months for 3 times already. Jeong was very careful when bleaching my hair but then of course if you have already spent so money dying your hair you should invest on some good shampoo, conditioner and treatment oil to take care of it. I'm not sure if my hair can afford to be bleached for the 4th time but I can tell you if I'm doing it again I will come to to DV hair studio cause I trust no one else with my hair but Jeong. read more

I found DAVID on yelp. I showed him a picture of what I want which is a PIXIE CUT I always carry. David was so DETAILED AND knowledgeable in giving me what I wanted. DAVID HAS A GREAT SENSE OF STYLE. first off - david was extremely communicative (i went the DM route first to book, and after having to make some changes to my appointment, ended up just messaging directly) and very friendly and nice. i cut, bleached, and dyed my hair, and while the whole process was extremely long (which i came ready for!), david and his team made it as smooth as possible, including by offering the snacks and drinks mentioned in the other reviews. the color i wanted (a pinkish purple) was EXTREMELY vivid on the first day - it was a huge change for me (going from dark brown hair and my first time bleaching) and it took some time for me to get used to it. in all honesty, i had requested something more low-key that would still be appropriate for work and had shared some inspiration pictures, which was not very similar to how it ended up looking - at least, at first. however, david was so extremely enthusiastic about the color (even sending some videos he took of the process) that i couldn't voice some of that anxiety at the time. HOWEVER, i'm glad i trusted him regardless of that initial shock, because after a few washes, the color has mellowed considerably and transformed into the perfect shades (which i am trying my best to maintain so i can enjoy it for as long as i can!). i absolutely love it. i think the mark of great coloring is how well it fades, and the shade is becoming even prettier as time goes on (even though i'm past that peak pink phase, as it's a hard color to keep, the tone is still there which i'm very happy with!). as a note, while i was there, i saw a few other people coming in for appointments (mostly more natural looking balayage, etc.) and they all ended up looking great and going home happy. also glad i came here because i love my haircut (went from long to mid-length)! it's hard to find a colorist who can also cut hair very well (for whatever reason, at least in my experience), so i came to DV because i had read good things and wanted to just get everything done in one go. on this aspect as well, david did a great job and was very attentive to and thorough with my hair. would definitely go back for both color and cut. as a last tip, i had the option to pay by venmo at the end of the appointment, which was convenient since i could save the cash i brought with me (i just used some to tip). it was a good price for a dye + cut, particularly in comparison to some other places in the area that i had also looked into. thank you, david! read more

You can trust DV studio for their service, they really know what they are doing with hair and although my hair was already dyed initially and very brassy, they were able to transform my hair into exactly what I showed them. I will always come back to this place from now on. I've had bad experiences dying hair at other studios before, and at the same price DV guarantees a good experience everytime. The only thing is I went on a Sunday which is one of their busiest days and all the customers had to sit around for quite a while for service. I would recommend going at a less busy day like weekday! read more

He worked with me to get the best result (we tested A string of my hair) He also gave me advise on how to care for my hair at home and what product to use. Price and time frame are both on point. Most of the colorist/stylist are always trying to push their own product Jeong is honest, not pushy. I feel very comfortable with the stuffs there and will be returning.
