I came here yesterday (9/25) at the recommendation of my cousin. She has had her hair done there many times by Alph Qiu and I really liked his work. It had been quite sometime since I had gotten a fresh cut and color and I had always wanted to try an Asian hair stylist because I think they would know Asian hair the best. I scheduled for a cut, color and highlights. A couple of days before my appointment, Q messaged me asking me about my hair and wanted to see a picture of it. I told him what I had done previously and the base/ highlight color I usually do. Fast forward to Saturday. TLDR: Non-existent customer service and communication. It took me awhile to decide if I wanted to leave a review for this place, since I never actually got my hair done here. But I think the customer service of a business is just as important as the quality of their services. And in that aspect, this salon really disappoints me. I reached out to Jeong Chen on IG after he did my friends hair and it came out great. I asked specifically for an appointment on May 15th a whole month ahead of time, since I had an event the next day and I wanted my hair to look nice. He told me he was all booked and recommended I msg his partner. Which was totally fine with me and I happily reached out to Mr.Q. The first thing I asked him was if he was available on May 15th and he said yes and asked me to come in for a consultation. Day of the consultation, he msgs me saying he hurt his hand and Jeong Chen would be doing my consultation. Which again, I was fine with and I msged Jeong Chen to coordinate a time. Due to a series of events the consultation did not happen and I asked Mr.Q if it was possible to just do the consultation same day of my appointment and he said that was fine. Fast forward to a few days before May 15th, I msged Mr.Q again and asked what time I should come in for my appointment and he tells me they are closed that day!!! And instead of admitting his mistake, he makes a bunch of excuses saying I never specified that I wanted May 15th and that my appointment was unofficial since I never got the consultation. All of which is not true because I have screenshots of our entire conversation. And why put "DM for appointments" in your IG bio if the appointments will be "unofficial??" Due to their incompetence I had to find another salon to do my hair at the last minute. I think this whole situation was highly unprofessional and totally avoidable if they were better at communication. Own up to your mistakes instead of making excuses! Do better. read more

Cross posting a review I wrote from when Jeong was at his last salon. See below. Most recent: I've been going to Jeong for the last 3-4 years and I've followed him to 3 separate locations. He is the only person that I will go to for my hair and I would rather turn into a mop puppet in order to wait for my next appointment than go somewhere else. Decode is a salon that Jeong recently opened himself and I'm so proud of him! Most recently (yesterday), I got my third balayage job done by him (after almost a year of quarantine hair) and I'm thrilled with how it came out! Originally, I was thinking of a darker look but he got me out of my comfort zone and we ultimately went with blonde balayage instead. I never thought I would be able to pull off a look this light before but was happy to be proven wrong thanks to Jeong! His staff and assistants are also very friendly and attentive. My comfort throughout the day was high priority and I was offered various snacks, coffee, wine, (and bonus: cake!) throughout the long day. I also had some great conversations to keep me entertained (they're also happy to not talk to you if that's what you prefer ). In summary, if you have any doubts about where to go next for your hair, I cannot speak enough praises about this place. I'm sure you will not be disappointed. Previous Review (08/29/2020): Jeong is an absolute master of color and style. I first discovered Jeong on Instagram ~3 years ago and I fell in love with his work. He's since done all my hair coloring, touch ups, and hair cuts. The first time Jeong colored my hair, we went for a gray balayage. It came out FLAWLESS. I used the purple shampoo he recommended for maintenance and I was getting compliments on my hair for even a year after despite not having the time to touch up my color professionally (sorry Jeong!). For my second hair coloring, I originally wanted to go for what I had gotten the first time but due to the earlier work and my inability to return for touch ups like I should have, the color was harder to achieve so we opted for a more natural brown balayage. It came out beautiful-- perfect for the summer! This time, I made sure to come back for touch ups. Now this review wouldn't be complete without me talking about haircuts. What? Haircuts? Seems a bit minuscule compared to the magic Jeong does with color. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Jeong is one of the most meticulous hair stylist I've ever had. His attention to detail is second to none. I came to decode in flushing based on reviews and having gone to the one in Chinatown in the past. I haven't gone there in a few years though. I happen to be in Flushing and was in desperate need to a haircut and didn't want to trek to my usual spot in Chinatown in the rain. I called ahead to schedule a last minute appointment with Jeong. The salon is new and very clean. I got my hair washed immediately upon entering. I told jeong I want a trim and showed him a picture I took of myself about 2 months ago. I said I just want the same style. He said he would cut the length to around my clavicle (a bit longer when he showed me). I said that's fine but not shorter. He asked if I still wanted to keep my layers and I said yes. I noticed that he was taking a lot off but of course he starts in the back so I can't really tell until he gets to the front and at that point it's too late. He gave me a pretty significant change that I'm not pleased with at all. When he was done I said "you cut it too short" and he said "yes, I think it looks better this way". That's NOT ok. It's not what i told him to do and I didn't give him free reign to do whatever he likes. To add insult to injury, it cost $68. Their booking site shows $50+ for women's cut. My hair was not long to begin with so I don't think the upcharge is valid. It's way more than anywhere else in Queens and it is not what I told him to do. Will not be coming back. read more

I came across Jeong's Instagram, and I would definitely say I was lucky I did. I have been turned down by salons back home from bleaching my hair because "it is too damaged." However, Jeong reassured me and did wonders to my hair. The colors of the balayage came out just as I wanted, and my hair didn't dry out at all. I got my hair colored by Rex today and was inspired to write a review because I asked for something pretty complicated & he did an amazing job. In fact it was was undoubtedly the best hair coloring & experience I've ever had. I showed him a pic as inspiration and said to "something like this". He let me know his vision & we talked about what colors, etc, and he totally made magic happen. Rex and the staff at Decode were so patient the whole time and were so attentive. Everyone, RUN don't walk to make an appointment here. Alph Qiu is the ONLY person I'll allow to touch my hair from now on. From haircuts to getting the perfect hair color, he's perfection. I've spent all my timing living in NYC to find someone I trust with my hair and I'm so happy I found Decode. Salon: The salon takes your temperature upon entering. They gave me an extra mask after mine broke, and offered water, tea, or coffee to sip while I waited. I felt very safe in terms of COVID protocols, and watched staff constantly sweep and clean up between clients. Hair color: Over the weekend, I came for a foilyage to fix the growth I had after I had one back in February with him. Considering the many months of growing, my roots and grown out hair didn't look that bad. I wanted to eventually go back to my natural hair color, and Alph knew exactly what I was thinking - except it came out even better. His foilyage is a balayage on steroids. It does take time, but so does perfection. Throughout the process, he explained the steps and his plans. Always, great communication. When I asked about maintenance and treatments he stressed that he did not want me to feel pressured into getting anything but did talk about the benefits of keratin and how it would actually impact my bleached hair. I think just knowing that he respects his clients is the cherry on top. I really trust him with my hair, but he's also fun to chat with! After the foilyage, he gave me a face-framing money piece to add a bit of drama and explained he was giving me a bit more dimension with his toner choice and an additional shadow root to blend my new hair growth with my new color. It turned out to be a very beautiful smoky, warm gray. Haircut: After toning and washing (of course, the best part is there shampoo ), he gave me a haircut to balance out a botched job I got somewhere else. He pointed out the areas he would fix. Let me tell you, his hair cutting skills shows he's a absolute artist! He does an amazing job with layers so the hair has movement and shape. Even with my haircut half done, there were other customers complimenting how beautiful it came out. Earlier, I even told another woman how beautiful her hair came out with another stylist, so really, you're in good hands. I was going to write a long, detailed review about how awful my experience with Jeong was but instead I'll give this review about as much care and attention as he gave me: little to none. I traveled from quite far away to see Jeong, who I found on Instagram. I sent pictures in advance and paid my deposit; I did all the right things. Long story short, when I got to the salon, he talked me out of the red hair I wanted and suggested I go ash brown. After that, he walked away and never came back. Literally. His assistants dyed my hair black and Jeong was nowhere to be found. He literally never even looked in my direction the entire 5+ hours I was there. After I complained about my experience and the black hair I specifically said I did not want, Jeong's behavior was childish and unprofessional at best. He not once offered to fix my hair and eventually told me to stop messaging him because he was not going to reply. I asked for the salon owner's information and he would not give it to me. I am shocked, angry, and appalled. Every day I look in the mirror at this black hair I never wanted, I am reminded of this terrible experience. This by far has been the worst experience I've had at a hair salon in a long time and I will definitely not be going back. read more

Interesting I only received a direct response from the stylist to address my concerns once I posted a public review. Mr Q - if you "did your best with the information provided", I ask again: WHY DID YOU CUT MY HAIR INTO THIN STRIPS WHEN I REPEATEDLY SAID NO? 2) Notice there is no apology and no acknowledgment of taking ownership of a mistake. Nor is there an offer to help with a solution. I received a 50% refund after pushing for it. I would rather have my hair back. I would love to hear the "many ways" you have "accommodated" my devastation and traumatic hair experience. 3) Most of the points in this response are half truths or untrue - an attempt at gaslighting - but I do not wish to argue. I hope you will listen to your clients in the future and realize that "no" actually means "no" - particularly when repeatedly said - when a client does not want a cut. And please, NEVER cut a clients hair into thin narrow strips with rattail ends, unless they asked for this for some reason. You ruined my hair. 4) I'm apparently not the only one this happened to with Mr. Q. I've had someone direct message me with a similar negative experience and there is also a review with a similar thinning out cut that was not requested on Yelp under the salon's page. I have to live with the results of what this stylist did. I would need extensions to get back the same thickness I had before. I would like an APOLOGY and an EXPLANATION but I can see from the response below, this person has taken a different approach. While hair is meaningful, there are bigger things in life to focus on so I'm moving on. I had an appointment on May 1 with Jeong at Decode Salon, and it was my first time going to this new salon. Jeong had done my hair a few years ago, but I was trying to do my hair on my own in recent years. It was nice going back to a professional, and the salon is absolutely beautiful! Very clean, and they take everyone's temperature when they enter the salon, and they also keep a contact tracing list. Everyone who works there wore a mask the entire time, so I felt very safe during these pandemic times. Jeong really cares about your hair and the health of your hair. I wanted to try rose gold, but we weren't able to get my hair light enough to do that. After bleaching, he toned my hair and made my hair into a very trendy silvery lavender color! He also cut my hair and I was pleased with the result. Olaplex is included in the hair coloring service as well. I was also very impressed by the customer service of Jeong and the salon staff. They brought out tea frequently so I could stay hydrated, and they even provided snacks when I got hungry. My friend who lives in Flushing stopped by because she wanted to see my hair, and they treated her like a guest as well and provided her with snacks and beverages. I was a bit skeptical and nervous prior to my hair appointment because I had a bad experience the last time I bleached my hair. I came in with a friend to get our hair done by Jeong and spent about 8-9 hours in the salon. Because we booked the same person, I was waiting around for Jeong to finish bleaching my friend's hair till he was able to do my hair. If you plan to get your hair done with the same colorist, I would suggest you make your appointment an hour later (or earlier) just so you don't rush to the salon to be on time just to sit around waiting for your turn... but definitely bring it up when you make your appointment. I came in wanting purple hair but since I have box dyed hair, he told me it wouldn't be possible in this visit because my hair color won't lift enough for the color. They also gave me money piece even though I didn't ask for it so make sure to communicate that! My friend asked for money piece so they probably assumed I wanted it too. Even though I didn't walk out with the color I wanted, I am still happy with what I got because it's natural and work appropriate so it's a win win situation anyways. Staff is very professional. My two biggest pet peeves when I'm at a hair salon are workers talking crap about your hair in Chinese and the colorist making their assistant do all the work. Jeong will actually work on your hair! Staff mostly speak in Cantonese to each other but it's just random chit chat! They have a snack and water station which I thought was really cool. I really wanted to love this place based on all of the great reviews and Jeong's Instagram. I wanted to love it so much that I scheduled an appointment not only for me but also for my fiancé (for a cut and perm) for the same day. Unfortunately, my experience with Jeong was pretty bad. When I came in for my appointment, he was working on someone else's hair and before he even talked with me to ask me what I wanted, his assistant was already working on my hair. Because of all the great reviews, I wanted to trust him/his process and so I just went with it. When Jeong finally came over to speak with me, he was super rushed and probably spent under 1 minute talking to me and I legit had to stop him from walking away as I shouted "and I want bangs too". Bro never even asked me what kind of bangs. Throughout the whole process, I thought the whole team was harsh with my hair and them dyeing my hair was very painful. They pulled very hard and I usually don't complain with these kinds of things so I didn't say anything until it became unbearable because 3-4 people were literally tugging my hair (and thus my head) in 3 different directions. I've had my hair professionally dyed at least 9-10 times and I've never been in that much pain. However, all of those things are quite negligible if the end product was worth it. If I'm paying over $600 for my hair, I just care that it comes out nice. I wish I could say that's what happened though. I think bc my old dye that was at the ends of my hair was hard to remove, Jeong ended up over bleaching my hair and as a result my hair is honestly a dry straw like hot mess. I wasn't able to achieve the color I requested and Jeong picked a different one for me (without showing me either fyi). He did tell me in the middle of the bleaching process that due to my previous dye job, we will have to do a darker color. I said that was okay and specifically that "I would rather have healthy hair." When he finished dyeing my hair and started cutting it, he kept walking away to talk with an old client. After he finished the cut he jumped straight to taking pictures for himself and never even showed me with a mirror what my hair cut looked like in the back. He didn't say much to me throughout the entire cutting/styling process except that my hair was damaged now and I should come back to his salon for a keratin treatment lol. At the time, because I didn't actually get a chance to feel my hair yet I didn't realize just how bad the damage was. I will say his pictures came out very nice though. I debated writing a review but seeing my hair at home, in it's unstyled and very damaged state (literally breaking off in the middle of the strands where it was actually hair that I had grown out/never been dyed and split ends everywhere) and thinking about how disrespected/unvalued I felt with him, I ultimately wanted to leave my opinion here. This whole experience just made me feel really sad. I was so excited to get my hair done with Jeong and I had planned it right before our engagement shoot (hence the perm for the dude haha). I told Jeong about the engagement shoot too so he knew how important this visit was to us. I truly hope this was a one off for this place and I hope this can be useful for others to pick up on signs that I should have to avoid these situations in the future! Also I ended up paying a lot more than anticipated and I totally get that a stylist may realize in the middle that a "color correction" is needed. However, I think it's best practice to inform the client about that instead of just doing it and assuming the client will be okay with it. If he had told me what he was doing, I would have opted to just not bleach it anymore and just get an even darker color to prevent damage. I even told him that I would rather go darker than have my hair damaged. Now my hair is legit just breaking off and when I saw my makeup/hair person for my engagement shoot yesterday, she suggested I get a hair cut because my hair is now so damaged and "will look lifeless in pictures" (her words not mine). read more

The attention to detail and professionalism of this salon really shines through. I booked an appointment with Jeong, looking for an alternative to my usual bleach-and-tone given how compromised my hair already was from multiple bleaches at my previous salon. Jeong took his time explaining the whole process to me, as well as potential challenges along the way which made me feel more at ease. I genuinely felt like the health of my hair was cared for because the staff were meticulous in where they applied the bleach and avoided my lightened ends which were prone to breakage! That was super important to me because I really wanted to prioritize the health of my hair this visit (my hair still looks healthy!) What really impressed me was that they also took the extra step to protect my scalp before bleaching because it made things a lot more comfortable for me both during and after the whole process and this was unheard of to me before. Their staff are respectful and considerate. No bad comments or talking smack about your hair or scalp and they ask how you're doing along the way to make sure you're not uncomfortable or hungry. I was recommended specific products to take care of the color and Jeong even blessed it with a complementary shampoo and conditioner when I asked for recommendations, so kind. I love the end result! Given the stubborn dark dye that was in my hair before, I think the results are a good balance between having that subtle pop of color while minimizing bleach. went to rex for a haircut and he did amazing. super detailed layers + shorter undercut, despite my probably bad explanation. medium-long haircut was $60. booking online was easy and they were able to accommodate me being late 20 minutes! will definitely come back for haircuts and also get a color job done next time. would recommend! read more
