I went to the Orem Community Hospital Emergency Room yesterday morning at the request of my dentist because I have a severely infected tooth, a visibly huge and swollen cheek, and so much pain, OTC meds weren't touching it so I was forced to take my back pain meds (which still didn't take the pain away,) as well as a fever of 103.4 earlier in the morning. My dentist thought I should go to the ER for IV antibiotics for fear that my tooth infection had turned into something much more serious because the antibiotics he gave me weren't working. The admitting person was a sweetheart as was the male nurse; both compassionate, empathetic, and kind. The doctor came in and made me feel foolish and idiotic for going to the ER for 'simple' tooth pain, actually pulling faces at the mention of a dentist sending someone to the ER, and rolling her eyes. THEN, when she seemingly, finally decided to figure out exactly what was going on, she sat down in front of me and said, "Hon, tell me what is going on. How did this happen?" All I could think was, are you serious?? I mean look at my ginormous, pink cheek, lady!! She talked to me as if I were a child and was extremely condescending. I just felt stupid and wanted to leave and go to a different ER but I had an IV at that point (for blood tests, mind you, not antibiotics). Then she sent me in for CT scans of my face to make certain that the infection hadn't spread anywhere dangerous, finally taking my issue seriously. She didn't give me the IV antibiotics for the severe infection, she simply 'upped' my antibiotic (from the one the dentist gave me) to a stronger one. How hard would it have been to simply give me even just a injection of stronger antibiotics?? Or better still, through the IV that was already in my arm?!? Then, she numbed my tooth to take away some of the pain, which it did, for about 30 minutes when the pain came back with a vengeance. I feel like the doctor didn't like being told what to do from a measly dentist, or God forbid, me, and didn't do the antibiotics out of sheer stubbornness and pride. No, I did not go to medical school, I am not a doctor and will not pretend to know how to heal someone in the way a doctor can. I do know my body and knew something was wrong. I also know empathy, which this doctor didn't seem to posses, nor, really, did the female nurse who just acted like it was an inconvenience for me to be there. I went to this ER with the hopes of having some relief from my pain and severe infection. I left feeling stupid for going in the first place. There was no empathy, compassion, or even patience from this doctor. I know there are other doctors working at the Orem Community Hospital's ER, some with likely more empathy than was shown me, but I will *never* chance that again. I will drive the extra several miles to AF Hospital's ER where they are kind, respectful, and even humble enough to listen. read more

I had a Carpal Tunnel surgery done at this hospital. They asked me if I had they copay which was $350. I said no. Instead of getting payments set up right then they did the surgery. They didn't ask after either. I got a statement in the mail with a paystub and a return envelope. I made a payment(what I could). I am on social security with no other income. The next month I got another statement, made the same payment, did this for 4 months then SLAM. They SLAMMED me into collections for the rest. No notice to call, no call, nothing said letting me know the payments I made were not good enough or that I needed to call, nothing just SLAM me into collections, granted my fico score is in the toilet anyway and I don't care because I pay cash for everything. I will never use this facility for anything ever again. read more

I've had 2 of my babies here and both times have been amazing! My first experience with this hospital was with giving birth to my second child in 2019. I ended up going into labor naturally and had my baby within 20 minutes of getting to the hospital. The staff was so fast to get the room ready and make me comfortable. I was too far along to get an epidural, so I ended up pushing her out in 1 push! The nurses and staff were amazing! The food is pretty good, but ultimately it comes down to the amazing nurses! My second time coming here was for the birth of my 3rd child, just in April of 2021. I came in for an induction and the nurses were amazing! They gave us one of the newer larger rooms and that was so nice! I ended up being in labor for 9 hours before I gave birth, so I interacted with the nurses a lot more before the baby was born than I did with my 2nd child. They were all so supportive of what I wanted to do and helped me accomplish it. My baby had a few breathing issues initially, so she had to go to their version of the "NICU" and the nurses all took such great care of her! I would definitely recommend the Labor and Delivery at this hospital! Such a personal experience! You don't feel like you're just another "number" to them! read more

I just delivered at OCH and it was by far the best birth experience I've ever had. The doctors and the nurses are all amazing. I wasn't progressing as fast as we thought I'd be so I asked to go home and labor there for a while and they let us do that. I went back in at midnight when my contractions were getting worse and they let me labor in peace and helped with counter pressure when I needed it. Jill, Marta, and Christie were the best nurses although there were so many more that I can't remember the names of that were so helpful during delivery. The room we had was 116 and it had beautiful views of the mountains and was huge. It does have a jetted tub but the heat didn't go up to where I like it but that's probably on purpose. The food for lunch and dinner were excellent and moms can order as much as we want!! You labor deliver and recover all in the same room but we didn't get to experience that part because our son went straight to the nursery for lung problems. The on staff pediatrician Dr Penman is incredible and we decided to choose him afterwards to take care of Baby C. They were very quick with extra tests like echocardiograms and worked very fast when life flight came to pick our son up and take him to UVH. I wouldn't deliver anywhere else if I ever have another child. read more

I really like the "Winst D." review. My family has been here on and off for 25 years. We've always been happy. We like that it really is a "community" hospital. They've never been over loaded. They always have solid staff, and they've taken care of us. It's hard to know the difference between 4 and 5 star. They may very well be 5 star, but until I really know, I'll leave it where it is. All that said. If I'm not having a heart attack, I'd be happy to end up here. read more

My husband was treated in the ED. The caregivers were all very kind and professional. The doctor was knowledgeable and quick to treat my husband. It was the quickest ER visit we have ever had. Orem community treats you like family. We will always choose this hospital for our care. read more

They were attentive and did help me, however, they did not address the primary issue that caused my physical and emotional breakdown that led to a very low potassium level - My 'SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER'. Not properly treated & then controlled, my disorder ran rampant! It led me to rapid weight loss, chronic diarrhea, dehydration & and an immense mental/emotional struggle that I was NOT able to get under control until I got back home! I needed more help & they should've helped me! I don't care if they are there for ER services only. You stabilize someone & then give them a small amount in prescription form. A 'BRIDGE' Prescription is what I call it. Just enough until you can get your prescription, get to your own doctor or clinic. Shame on the standards of boxing everyone into the "Don't give them any benzodiazepines"! I know what I take! I know what works for me and what doesn't! They should've listened to me! It would've saved me so much pain! I've had this disorder most of my life. It is the worst type of chronic anxiety a person can have. I 'WOULD' wish it on my worst enemy! I needed a prescription to my Clonazepam, which I ran out of and do need on a daily basis. I was eventually given Ativan (the brand name for Lorazepam) in my IV. It helped me but it wasn't strong enough. As stated before; I should've been given a smaller prescription dose in pill form, along with the small dosage they gave me in the E.R., to fill & take until I got back home. I had to wait a long time until I was seen. A person could go into a nervous fit & commit suicide in the bathroom! I wouldn't, even that crazed with discomfort, but others might! No one was watching me & this type of disorder is an extreme " Everyone is watching me", all encompassing, self conscious social anxiety that not I, nor anyone else with a disorder this bad, can control on their own! I can't & I know when I need help! Don't be fooled into thinking you can 'cure' an anxiety disorder. It is an ongoing nightmare in your head! It can affect you not only mentally/emotionally, but at its most severe, especially after I went through withdrawal from my usually prescribed medication, the sense of 'floating', being unable to walk, stand, or even chew/swallow properly! Yep, you read that right! One's balance is completely off and stays that way! It NEVER leaves you alone! So, they did help, of course, but they didn't 'LISTEN' enough! After I went back to my hotel (I was traveling, took ill & then ran out of my meds) I struggled immensely & almost had to go back to the E.R.! They should've just given me my prescription for at least a week to week & a half. Hospitals & Drs are always hesitant to prescribe benzodiazepines! Wake up! That's what those prescription drugs are for! To be prescribed & treat certain types of mental/emotional disorders. While in Utah, I watched several stories on the news stating that (basically) several people had gone berserk & killed themselves because they were 'Anxious'! They likely needed a good benzodiazepine: NOT necessarily an antidepressant or antipsychotic, at least not on its own. A benzodiazepine will help to calm you and regulate your brains mood. You can then think more clearly in order to then work on conditioning your behavior. A good benzodiazepine should be given in a decent amount. Don't think the cliche' that Drs & their associates push on you! Making you think how 'addictive' they are-Blah,Blah,Blah! Yes. They are addictive! So what?! So are many other drugs. You must monitor your intake. Running out of them, especially while traveling, is a friggin' nightmare! I finally got home & got my refills! Thank you Jesus! I need my Clonazepam! They needed to 'LISTEN' to me about my very important & very needed benzodiazepine! They didn't help me on a short term basis. Instead I went to hell & back for no good reason, save for the fact that I have reaffirmed my knowledge that my 'Social Anxiety Disorder', at this point in medical progress, STILL CANNOT BE CURED! NO MATTER WHAT! Therefore, it must be treated daily & controlled along with some therapy. I should be talking much more. My doctor isn't like that, so this incident made me better aware that I need to get a basic therapist/counselor too. Also; I'm Not depressed! I'm anxiety ridden! There IS a big difference between the two! They can go hand & hand, but not with me. I'm still upset, ok pissed, that I had to suffer because they CHOSE NOT TO HELP FURTHER WITH MY 'SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER'! read more

My two experiences were poles apart. I do not use the ER except in real emergencies and ONLY when a medical professional sends me there. My first experience was excellent. The nurse that night was vigilant, supportive, a real valiant woman. She made me feel believed and protected. Also, the doctor was cheerful, friendly with a great attitude. MY SECOND EXPERIENCE with an entirely different staff was awful. In thinking over the events of that night, I believe they presumed me to be a weird drug seeker. (The word "weird" was used.) Thus to get rid of me, they gave me a strong dose of Dilaudid. AFTER GIVING IT TO ME, the nurse told me, "Dilaudid does not relieve pain. It only makes you so high you don't care if you have pain." This information together with the effects of the drug scared me. The Dilaudid made me horribly nauseated. After dosing me, they promptly released me. My pharmacy was closed and thus I had to pay more for the additional anti-nausea medication needed to counteract it, at a 24-hour pharmacy. Neither the doctor or nurse listened to me or remembered anything I told them. At the very final moments I again asked, the question that sent me there in the first place which was, "Should I take the next dose of amoxicillin my DENTIST prescribed?" To which I was FINALLY heard and given an answer: "No, it is making you sick." I WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN, unless in an unconscious state, I am inadvertently taken there by ambulance. read more

We had our baby here in June of 2017. And while it was our first, I think it is safe to say, that while we live in this area, we will be having every child at this hospital. The staff was amazing, the rooms are HUGE, the cafeteria food was not bad & was fairly priced, and last but not least the snack room was well-stocked :). I would have to defer to my wife on the specifics of care, but overall we were very happy with our experience at this little hidden Jem of a hospital. read more

Best kept secret! I've had 3/4 of my babies here and every single experience has been unique but amazing. I had one baby who needed extra help after she was delivered (a code was called) and everything was handled beautifully. I've also had surgeries performed here and have never had a bad experience. I had a same day surgery at Orem Hospital and it wasn't a very good experience. They told me to be there at 8:30 for the pre-surgery process so I was there at 8:30. Most of the staff were really nice and they took me back after I'd signed all the paperwork. Anesthesiologist came in and I handed him the protocol my last anesthesiologist gave me (because it worked really well). i don't remember his name but he was kind of arrogant and presumptive. I waited in that room all ready for the surgery and I waited and waited and waited. They didn't take me back until almost 12:00 noon. I don't handle the fasting part of surgery well -thus the need for an early in the day surgery. The longer I waited, the sicker I felt. Waking up from surgery has always been a rough time for me but this one was especially rough. Every part of my body ached and some areas down right hurt. I felt sick and worst of all, I felt like my lungs were on fire and it was painful to breathe. At first the anesthesiologist thought I was having a heart attack but ruled it out and gave me a line about how the lungs get lazy when you're intubated. That may be true, but why hasn't that happened in the previous 7 surgeries? So, he ordered a breathing treatment. The nurse brings in the nebulizer and handed it to me instructing me to take deep breaths through it. About 20 minutes later she comes in and says something like "oh, that's upside down". I've never used one before and she was standing right there instructing me how to use it and she didn't notice it was upside down from the get go? WTH? So, I can't say I was well taken care of because I wasn't. They may have been nice, but I'd prefer actual knowledge on how things work. They gave me no additional pain meds other than what they gave me in the OR. Why? Was it because I'm allergic to morphine and they apparently don't have anything else????? Once I was home and more or less awake again, I noticed I was mostly covered with a lovely rash all over my body- so something they gave me caused an adverse reaction. The symptoms were itchy and it stung if I scratched but that's as bad as it got symptom wise thank goodness. I had it for over a week. I was told to just take benadryl. I can't take benadryl so I just had to live with it. 2 months later I get the bill and there were 15 different drugs they gave me. My previous anesthesiologist had 3 on his protocol list. Now, I understand different circumstances require different medications but 15? That's way too much. ALL of them had a side effect of rash so it's impossible to tell which it was. I'm highly sensitive to medications and I told the anesthesiologist that but apparently, he didn't pay any attention. No wonder I woke up practically unable to breathe. Other than that discomfort, my biggest upset about it is that they cost so much and I don't believe they were all necessary. I'm guessing since I'm allergic to morphine, it was the Fentanyl (morphine's more potent, addictive "cousin"). I think they're just in it to make money. They certainly didn't seem to care anything about me as a person. Just a patient with insurance they could over charge so they did all they could to inflate that cost. I was told the day before the actual surgery that I could make payments on the balance - but they wouldn't know what that was exactly until my insurance claim was processed. The bill came in Jan. and I was making large payments on the balance. I must have been 5 minutes late on a payment because they turned me over to a collection agency. Seriously? No final notice, no explanation, nothing. Just more proof that they just want the money. They couldn't bleed me fast enough so they turn it over? Seriously? So, that was the last straw. The only reason I even gave one star was because the front desk people and one of the nursers were very pleasant. I will never go to this hospital again willingly. read more

Since living in Orem the only doctors I have visited were/are at the Orem Community Hospital. I first visited Dr. Marie Shelton for my yearly check up about a year ago. I now visit Dr. John McCarter who is my ob/gyn. I am due with my first child in 1 month and I have had nothing but good experiences with Dr. McCarter and the nurses and staff at the hospital. Some days I have had to wait some time before the doctor was available to see me, but that is my only small complaint. As soon as I saw Dr McCarter, he was happy to help me with any questions I had and make me feel comfortable and comforted throughout my pregnancy. And his nurses have always been very friendly and helpful too. I love that this hospital is smaller and I look forward to delivering my baby there in the next few weeks and plan to continue to visit doctors within this practice after my child is born and whenever my next children come too. read more

If I could give no stars, I would. The RN (Sarah in the emergency room) was so unpleasant. For a small hospital above and beyond costumer service is so important. I see patients all day long for my job and even my hardest patients, I never have treated them the way that RN treated me. The hospital is already an unpleasant experience, no one enjoys being a patient in a hospital but ever hospital I have ever been in the nurses and doctors make it way more bearable. But this experience was the exact opposite because of Sarah (the RN) its sad that this hospital is being represented that way! She was so condescending and mean. She knew nothing about customer service what so ever and it was apparent to everyone that she hates her job. I recommend that she finds a new career or at the very least a different hospitals reputation to ruin! read more

All three of my babies have been delivered at Orem Community Hospital. It is my hospital of choice in the area. I like that I didn't have to change rooms after delivery. With my third baby, I wanted a natural delivery and the nurses were very helpful with my requests. With each delivery, it seems that the hospital's policies and procedures have improved. I loved the encouragement of skin-to-skin right after birth. Hospital management stopped by my last day to make sure that everything had gone as I had hoped. She seemed to genuinely appreciate all feedback. We did have a slight problem with billing, but the hospital worked with us to make sure that everything was corrected. I especially appreciated the special treatment and care my newborns received whenever we went in for blood work because of their jaundice. The lab technicians were skillful and quick, but, most importantly, very caring. read more

5 hours after flying into Salt Lake City and arriving to Orem for the first time of my life, I drive myself to the nearest hospital because half my face was drooping. Not only was this the first time in Utah, but this is the first time ever going to the Emergency Room. And contrary to what I expected, the hospital was dead. Not a single patient when i arrived. Is that good or bad?? Anyway, it was pretty quick to get in and see the doc. Everyone there was pretty awesome - the admin inpatient lady, the nurse, the intern taking my blood pressure, the doctor diagnosing me, the other doctor running the ct scan machine...etc etc lol Great people here, very friendly, and competent. They even helped me find the nearest 24 hour pharmacy....at 2am....driving to Provo. For the first time, ever. BTW...WTF is up with your roads in Orem/Provo??? Don't you guys use street NAMES instead of the crazy "W 400 S" crap?? lol....ok, it actually made sense when i figured it out...but still...COME ON! You gotta warn people about that stuff! read more

This place is absolutely terrible. I came in because of dehydration from an Ulcerative Colitis flare...which is very severe. Hence the reason why we went to the ER! However, there is no urgency in this emergency room. First off, my husband and I walked in on a hot summer morning and there was no AC. This place was uncomfortable from the start. I already felt like passing out, but the stuffy air made me feel even worse. It took the front desk lady five minutes to notice when we were there and had no urgency to get me checked in. Standing there in tears, she told me to "take a seat" and "we will get you a bed soon" as if there is no emergency going on. They finally bring me back and all they do is ask me the same questions from the front desk, when I'm sitting on the bed with a pan to throw up in. The nurse, Jim, couldn't remember the names of prescriptions I told him--he had no idea what was going on and walked out on me with no explanation of where he was going or what they were going to do. When my husband told him I needed an IV because of the dehydration, he told him, "we will see about that." I started throwing up on the bed and no one came in to see what was going on, yet I heard some people laughing in the hall. Clearly people could hear me. Because of that, my husband and I just walked out and left. The nurse at the front desk looked at us and I said, "we're going to check in at a different hospital" in frustration. All he said was "oh!" And that was that. Luckily, Timpanogos Regional Hospital took care of me right away and gave me an IV with anti-nausea medicine within ten minutes of checking in--no questions asked! The doctor came in promptly, did a CT Scan and Ultrasounds, finding the root to a new problem. Not to mention, they had very comfortable beds. They could see how sick I was. The nurse even gave me a sprite to make my stomach feel better. To end my rant...I have never felt so mistreated in a medical setting. Don't go to this place, EVER!! read more

Orem Community is the best hospital in Utah Valley. I gave birth here, and I had the best experiences. All the nurses were so kind and made me feel like I was their only patient. Dr. Judd delivered my baby here, and he was fantastic. We've also gone to the ER here a few times over one of the larger hospitals in the area because we always have a quick and wonderful experience. I think it's one of Utah Valley's best kept secrets! read more

They even all had a sense of humor as well. Today, 2 days later I actually got a phone call from them to follow up and check on me. I've never had any hospital do that before. Repeatedly unhappy with care received in this ER. While fighting to get insurance to pay for what the considered an elective surgery, removal of my gallbladder, I found myself in the ER more than I'd have liked. I had been told that if I had pain that my meds wouldn't help with to go to the ER to have blood drawn to see if I needed emergency surgery. Since this hospital was in network, it was where I went. Most instances were wholly unremarkable in any way. I'd go in, bed further medicated while waiting for test results, then sent on my way. I wasn't treated poorly on these occasions, but also not treated in a way I'd have said was remarkably good either. On one occasion though it was different. I came in to the ER barely able to stand or breathe because of the pain. The doctor immediately took it upon himself to let me know that not magically coming up with tens of thousands of dollars to pay for a surgery my insurance wouldn't cover and seeking the medical care my doctor had told me to seek made me a drug addict. He even refused to draw blood to do tests because he didn't believe there was anything at all wrong with me, never mind the test results and records he had right in front of his face. Less than a week later I was in emergency surgery. On another occasion this same doctor decided to lecture my husband instead of treat him. My husband is a type 1 diabetic. If he is sick (vomiting) he may have trouble getting enough carbs to stay in him to keep his blood sugar up. Late one night when he couldn't keep anything down we ended up in the ER as his blood sugar plummeted. After testing and seeing a result in the 30s the doctor proceeded to lecture my husband on taking appropriate care of himself. Why? Because apparently a type 1 diabetic should never find themselves in a position to be in an ER because they're unable to eat. Because I guess they should have some sort of control over that. Anyone who has ever seen someone with a glucose level that low knows that there is very little cognition left at that point. And the doctor continued with this lecture for several minutes without starting an IV. I was on the verge of dialing 911 for an ambulance to take us to an ER that had an interest of keeping my husband alive when the doctor decided to do his damn job and order an IV. There is a hospital here that takes an interest in treating patients with respect, and in actually treating them. We'll stick with them. read more

Same Day surgery on Friday, Dec 2nd. Got a call the day before to inform me of check-in time. They asked for Lisa. I am not Lisa and I don't want Lisa's surgery. Finally, they got my name right. The next day, after returning home from surgery, I received a voicemail for Lisa, asking her to hurry in for surgery. Again, I am NOT Lisa! The next day, I received a survey asking me to rate my anesthesiologist. It must've been Lisa's anesthesiologiist, because it was not mine! I hope poor Lisa had a successful surgery!! Mine turned out fine. Except for the nurse who tried to hook up my IV unsuccessfully and then ran my post op leg into the wall on the way out, not to mention a few other pretty serious mistakes she made. Luckily, my doc is top notch. I hope he reconsiders doing surgeries at OCH. read more

delivered my son at this hospital. Because it's smaller the nurses can give you a lot of one on one attention. our nurse during the middle of the night was practically a doula to me. She was amazing. She coached me and my husband through every step of the delivery. Every nurse was phenomenal. I really hope I can deliver here again. It's also very unmedicated birth friendly. I was able to walk the halls, get in the jacuzzi tub, etc. read more
