James, the owner and operator, is a wonderful human being. A couple days prior to a visitor arriving in September my vacuum died. I did some online research for good vacuums for people with pets and the Sebo Felix was recommended on so many chat boards! So I saw Stark and this place carried them locally. I decided to call this place first. James answered the phone. He suggested bringing my vacuum in, though it was just a Hoover (not a brand he carries) and I had asked about the Sebo, which he did carry. Meaning, if he could fix it he'd lose he sale. To me, it seems we live in a world where there is little integrity in sales and most of what we buy is disposable. I had three stick vacuums from Amazon and then the Hoover in the span of four years, so buying something pricier but that is warrantied and well-made sounded like an investment worth the extra money up front! I arrived and he checked out my vacuum, it was not starting again. He took it apart as much as he could and we agreed it wasn't going to be resuscitated. He then spent a long time talking me through what I wanted in a vacuum. He knew I wanted to try the Sebo Felix, but he also wanted to make sure I knew its pluses AND minuses. He told me all the things people dislike about it, then pointed out other models. He didn't press or push. He wanted me to evaluate, based on the information, if any of the vacuums we discussed would work for me. He had me try it out, he showed me how to remove and replace filters, he showed me how to switch heads for different purposes, he even offered to submit the warranty to me (and since he's qualified to repair the machine, that was a bonus). I was under a bit of duress due to a pending visitor but I decided to try the Felix. I love the vacuum, with the exception of the missing light. Well, it's not missing, I just wish the machine had a light on its head so I could see dust, dirt and fur better. But otherwise it's great! Bagged vacuums are so much better for us dust mite allergy sufferers, too. I did have an issue where the lid didn't click down, though it seemed to have been secured. He told me to bring it in, checked the machine, cleaned some parts and determined it was user error, though he's very good at not making you feel like that's the case. He was kind and showed me some things to help in future. That same visit I mentioned I needed a vacuum for my work studio. I mentioned some of the machines (cheaper) that I saw on Amazon's he showed me vacuum that you carry and has lots of extensions. It's very handy, because my studio is a small space and I don't need a regular sized vacuum. He had me try it out, asked me what I'd be vacuuming up, and what the space was like (type of floor). He mentioned the pros and cons of the machine. Honestly, it worked well and I think James is amazing (I want to support small businesses like his over Amazon!!!), so I bought it! It's been great for the purpose. I'll tell you one thing- if you're looking for a GOOD vacuum, you want someone who will honestly evaluate your needs and give you the pros and cons of models that will meet your needs (but only IF he has a machine that does- he won't sell you on something you don't want and there's no pressure), and you're sick of disposable appliances and supporting Amazon, you HAVE to give Oregon Vacuum Center a visit! read more

How does a vacuum cleaner store stay in business these days? People buy their vacuums at the big box stores. When they break, it's usually easier and cheaper to buy a new one. Oregon City Vacuum Center has been around for a LOT of years. I've been there a few times because my Hoover Carpet shampooer is always messing up. A couple times it was my vacuum that needed a new belt. Jim has always been able to fix it while I wait, he cleans it up, replaces parts, shows me how to fix it myself if I needed to, then he hands me the bill. I swear it's NEVER been more that $15-$20. That includes PARTS & LABOR! I still don't know how he stays in business but I'm sure glad that he does. read more

This seemed to be the only place in the whole city of Portland that carried a discontinued vacuum part that I was told I needed. I called ahead to make sure it was truly in stock because I had already struck out several times and the man I spoke with was very direct - certainly not rude, but very straight forward which I really appreciate in customer service. After a quick diagnostic, it turned out the original repair shop I had gone to was wrong, and I didn't need that particular part, but instead needed another part that would cost more than just buying a new comparable vacuum. The man who helped me did not begrudge the time spent assisting me, and there was no charge for the diagnostic. I will definitely go here first for my future vacuum repair needs. When I brought in my Bissell Pro Heat 2x carpet cleaner to get repaired, they recommended to not to even spend the money to get it fixed. Bissell has a reputation for poor quality, especially for my particular model. Oregon City Vacuum Center does not even touch Bissell for that reason. I appreciate the honesty. read more

On a Friday afternoon we brought in our Dyson Animal because it sounded like a jet engine taking off. We assumed the motor was gone. While we were correct, in less than a minute Jim was also able to tell us what caused it, the canister that came with the vaccum was not properly sealed allowing dirt into motor. He was able to verify our warranty with dyson, ordered all the parts (all covered) and had it fixed and ready for pick up by Tuesday. Great communication all the way and amazing work. It is only fitting that my first Yelp review be about a vacuum repair shop, as I am a bit OCD about my vacuuming! Anyway, today Oregon Vacuum Center gained a new customer in me. I had a cord that had gotten to the point where some wires were exposed, and on Christmas Eve of all times finally shorted-out on me and stopped working. Normally I go to Stark's for my vacuum needs, so naturally I called them to see what the cost would be to replace my cord. I was told it would be at $85.00-$100.00 for the cord and labor and that they would need it for at least 5 days!! Well, if the price didn't already seem a little high for a measly cord, the time frame to fix it seemed RIDICULOUS! So, I called Oregon City Vacuum Center and to make a long story short, he fixed that same morning in 10 minutes flat, and only charged me $40.00 for the labor and the cord! He was extremely nice, professional and happy to do it too. Definitely will be going back for my vacuum's tune up's, bags, belts, repairs etc... read more
