I am not sure when I come across a distillery as far as what constitutes as a good vs bad distillery experience. The ones I have been to have always been good experiences and other people's reviews seem to match up with that. Same goes for Oregon Spirit Distillers. Steve and I had s great experience with this distillery's vodka. The specific name for this one was the Cascadian Vodka. We would have a small pour of it with our meals on certain nights...straight up and it was always so very good. It has a nice dryness to it in the flavor profile and all the rest of the characteristics that come with vodka. What a wonderful experience we had at this distillery just outside of downtown Bend! They offer quite a variety of hard alcohol for tasting and purchasing. Plus you can get cocktails or flights at this distillery! We settled down for a couple cocktails and they were very well balanced! I enjoyed my Bourbon cocktail! Beyond drinks, you can get some light food to have with choice refreshments. The distillery had great seating indoors and outdoors. Inside you can enjoy seating at the bar or one of the numerous tables. Also there is plenty of seating on the patio. The service at the distillery was wonderful! We've enjoyed a couple of Oregon Spirit products, including the excellent pink gin. While I'd normally buy from their booths at the various city festivals, I have dropped in here at their tasting room as well. It's nice. Oregon Spirit's sense of community involvement and responsibility really shined this week, though. What with the local (national, global) supply of hand sanitizer seriously depleted due to the current pandemic, OS took it upon themselves to produce their own. It makes sense that this is how they would contribute (hand sanitizer is mostly alcohol) - I note that many distillers are doing so. OS this week was giving out (as in free) a handsome 8 oz bottle of sanitizer to each person who dropped in at the tasting room. Very cool. While there, I picked up a bottle of that pink gin, too. A fun place to do a tasting! They have pre-constructed flights or you can create your own flight. They also have cocktails and snacks you can order. Cool decor inside and out, and it looks like they have live music sometimes. Sorry to be so late. We went there about a year ago. This is a MUST SEE if you like spirits! We started with the brief yet very informative and enjoyable tour (of their old location ). Our guide was entertaining and helpful. We sampled the bourbon and whiskey, both surprisingly good! Bought some to go :) Had the Scorpion vodka, despite her disclaimers. OMG! H O T ! ! Bend's most talented and knowledgeable distiller recently added another accolade to his already stellar reputation. Brad, of Oregon Spirit Distillers recently moved the distillery to a new location which provided the space to open a restaurant. The Barrel Thief proudly features signature mixed drinks featuring OSD's liquor. A recommendation from tasting room diva, Rachele Gallinat, began my exploration of all things on offer from Oregon Spirit Distillers. I began in the tasting room with Rachele. Her professionalism and knowledge increased my understanding of the distillation process. She also opened my palate to new and exciting distilled beverages. Of the four spirits I sampled, I discovered two new favorites. The first is the Distiller's Choice Oregon Blackberry Cordial. As Rachele handed me my snifter of the Cordial she became Cupid to my palate's desire for vine fresh berries in the depth of a Central Oregon winter. I have never tasted any 'prepared' beverage that tastes so close to it's natural off-the-vine flavor. Sure it has a slight fermented finish, it is a cordial. However, as it lingers on your taste buds, it's intense fresh blackberry sweetness surrenders to the tart characteristic which defines a vine fresh berry. To a native Oregonian, sipping this fruity perfection tastes like the fading warmth of an Central Oregon fall afternoon. The second palate awakening was my introduction to the Otis Webber Oregon Wheat Whiskey. I had never had a 100% wheat American Whiskey. I anticipated my disappointment, I mean really, no corn flavor whatsoever? Yet, in the spirit of open-mindedness I put my expectations in my pocket, and sniffed and sipped my way into a whole new love affair. I think I am converted! It has the sweet vanilla flavors from the oak aging, but it has a softer feel on the palate. Yes, it is 90 proof, so it delivers the heat we expect and appreciate. The difference is that the heat manifests itself as a smooth warmth that builds, not the instant heat I get from corn or other wheat whiskeys. So little time, so many amazingly crafted spirits. We had a great time here during our honeymoon this week. The cocktails were creative and very good. Service was great, bartenders friendly and even the owner stopped by to say congrats! The tasting for $7 included 4 pours of your choice (I had whiskey, bourbon, absynthe (sp) & the BlackBerry cordial.).
