Don't listen to the few detractors who don't seem to know the first thing about Chinese food. Red Chilli is an excellent small chain of (4) restaurants in Manchester (2), Leeds (1) and York (1). I have been to all of them during my travels in England, and the consistently high quality of real, authentic Chinese food (I should know: I've been to China and was in a relationship with a Chinese woman, who also enjoyed cooking - for a number of years) distinguishes Red Chilli restaurants from most other establishments even in the nation's small Chinatown districts. Unfortunately, the equally consistently unfriendly service in no way differentiates this chain from all the other Chinese restaurants, be it in London's tourist-y Soho, or anywhere else. If you are traveling /eating alone, like I usually do, expect to be treated like a pariah. Anyway, the food is good to great and entirely characteristic of the Szechuan cuisine especially. Those who complain about "no flavor" clearly either have their taste buds dimmed by decades of smoking e.g., or just do not know anything about *real* Chinese food. The spicier dishes here, especially my personal favorite (stir-fried pig intestines, or eel, with dry red chili), aren't for the squeamish. Expect repeated visits to the toilet later that night, with a burning anus to spare. Don't worry, it's totally worth it. Other recommendable dishes include stir-fried baby octopus with onions and preserved vegetables, deep-fried fish fillet in various forms, and pig-in-a-pot. I haven't had a bland or less-than-decent dish in ANY of the Red Chill restaurants. Highly recommended!

In the past three or so years, I'm afraid it's all gone down hill from there. What started out as an all you can eat buffet, with lean and tasty Chinese cuisine, three distinct courses; starters, mains and desserts, refill drinks, good customer service and smiles and pleasantries and all that has now ended up as an inflated prices buffet with time limit (who the frig puts a time limit on food) of about 90 minutes or an hour depending on your day and time of day, no refills, and quite frankly sub par food. Ok so the details, the establishment itself is rather nice, clean pale wood and cream leather stools, set together in formations of long tables or tables for two, you don't ever really feel out of place in here eating by yourself if you're grabbing a quick power lunch and you're on a time limit. And on the other hand, the long benches make good for larger groups. Nice clean lines, gives a nice light bright atmosphere to the place, especially with the large glass window that fills the restaurant with light on nice days. Back in the day you ordered a soft drink and you paid more for it, but you could refill it, grand idea, not any more, the food was always piping hot and fresh, and trays were regularly turned out, lately, if it's running low and looking a bit oldish, you have to ask for them to refill the trays up, won tons and spring rolls and such all seem to leave a healthy residue of grease on the plate, which as my dear friend discovered, is whisked out from under your snout before you've had chance to place the fork down. My veggie mates never used to have much trouble finding something to snaffle, but the last ditch attempt we had left her eating broccoli and vegetarian starters. Dessert used to save this, but the ice cream machine complete with plethora of syrups and bits and bobs has now been replaced by really crap ice-cream in boxes, all piled up on top of each other, open, stuck in a freezer with residual previous scoop marks from other flavours. Nice(!) Other dessert items include Jammy Dodgers, mini Swiss rolls cut in half, jaffa cakes, all kinda stale if I'm honest, and the saving grace, fresh fruit. And the wholesome family relaxed vibe got shot out of the water, when I actually witnessed two members of staff rushing a family out who had been there 60 minutes as their time was up, they actually looked more surprised than peeved, they were relaxing over food, and enjoying conversation, the place wasn't packed, in fact it was on the empty side which made it even more astounding, and they were bringing back plates for their children, of which were paying customers too, so it took longer to get everyone ready to eat than say a couple. Eventually the anger set in as they left without finishing their plates and loudly vowed never to return. For a place that three years ago was buzzing with people, lately it's empty, a couple of people fill tables as opposed to the usual busy atmosphere. Tried something new last night and was well impressed with our decision…read more Again, taking advantage of a 'livingsocial' voucher which always encourages me to try something for a taster and see if I would pay full price- on this occasion, just that happened. We booked in for 6pm but due to the awful weather I didn't get there until 6.20 but my Mr was having a beer and chilling in the very calming 'bar' area. The entrance is a bit daunting and the door needs a firm hand to open but then you are transported into a Japanese paradise! Across the bridge you go, beautiful fish swimming underneath, to be greeted by a very 'traditional' waitress and seated for drinks. The drinks menu is ok, couple of beers and a wine list and also spirits etc so something for everyone. We had a few minutes to browse the menu before they came to take our order. I'm glad we were limited to the 'early bird' choice with the voucher we had as I was over faced with the choice available and would have taken ages to choose had I had to use the full menu! We were seated around the table and waited for our starters - Zensai - A mixture of Japanese Appetisers Yasai Tempura - Vegetables Both dishes were well presented, nice and hot and a pleasure to eat! We polished them off quite quickly. The vege tempura was lovely and light and we had a nice selection of mini Japanese nibbles on the 'Zensai'. We then had another couple come and be seated right next to us which we found a bit strange! They also were then served their starters. Another couple then were sat opposite us which added to our confusion a little more but then the neighbouring couple filled us in! This is the traditional seating pattern of Japanese, all sit together no matter who & around one table/hot plate to all enjoy the show! Ahhh, I get it now! Maybe I should have done more thorough research! The third couple got their starters which the 'hostess' attended to more drinks for us and the chef set up for his 'show'. We were then treated to a very entertaining dining experience while our main courses were cooked. A dazzling array of skills with the cooking utensils and a flash of fire! We had chosen- Fillet of Beef with Oriental Mushrooms & Chicken Teriyaki with leeks but all the food was cooked on the one hot plate- even the other couples fish which I wasn't overly impressed with as I'm not a big fish fan. The beef was lovely and tender and the only criticism we'd have was there didn't appear to be a lot! The chicken was also very tender and a slightly bigger portion! Our table was booked for 9, they took our food and drinks orders whilst we waited, our attention distracted briefly from our rumbling stomachs by the koi carp pond. We had to wait about half an hour until we were seated, but goodness was it worth the wait! The starter of beef sashimi was melt-in-the-mouth tender and served with a tasty dipping sauce, absolutely faultless! Appetites truly whetted, the real drama begins. The chef enters centre stage and proceeds to prepare our meals and six others with a pyrotechnic display of culinary stagecraft. Dazzled by the bright lights and flashing knives, I had King prawns and jumbo scallops in a Tokyo butter, which is as exciting and delicious as it sounds. Just one star off for the long wait and for priceyness (even with the taste card). This is Japanese food-wizardry at its finest!
