Japanese food as a post shopping food choice has never been my first port of thinking. Fuji Hiro hasn't been on my radar at all over the past few years, and suggestions to eat here elicited all my skeptical and let's go somewhere else reactions. I wasn't even sure where it was, and when I realised we were heading towards the Merrion Centre I was less inclined to jump aboard the Japanese food train. If looks were everything this place wouldn't be too busy. It looks kinda dingy from the outside, and whilst the inside has a certain charm about it, it's not the Ritz but doesn't profess itself to be so. Think of it as a Japanese eatery version of the local cafe. I was looking over the menu, contemplating what to order, and being particularly hungry, did my unusual thing of looking at starters. My friend just shook her all knowing head at me and pointed straight to the mains. Huh? Well what was cloudy became clear within about ten minutes, as my hearty noodle dish came, steaming and smelling divine, and flippin huge. Seriously, I was pleasantly surprised at this. Considering how quick our orders came, I was more than pleased to take in the taste and how fresh everything was. It didnt have that 'been stewing all day in a pot waiting to be warmed up and served' taste, nor did it have quick food microwaved crunchy in some places and soggy in parts texture either. Being a dork with coordination, but feeling self conscious at the people opting for the chop sticks, I was relieved when a fork was provided for me. There's a good hustle bustle vibe about Fuji Hiro's and whilst the staff are not rude, far from it, there's an efficient business like approach to providing awesome food to their hungry clients, even the ones who are yet to walk through the door. We've been meaning to try this place for well, years! So we did. last Wednesday prior to the Yelp event i decided to treat my friend and I to T. I entered and hovered as it's not clear if it's waitress service or you just sit- I was approached by a waitress and told to just sit anywhere. There was a long table in the middle free or 1 table for 3 available so I sat there- i was brought a menu and I explained i was being joined by another so she left me to it. It was freezing cold- I could see my breath in there! The decor was light and clean but there didn't seem to be any 'heating' as such. There was a mix of professional types,students and even a family with children eating so I can see it appeals to most tastes and situations. After trying to attract the waitress' attention I finally managed to let her know I wasn't necessarily waiting for my +1 to order so she took down what I wanted and scuttled off. I'd been sat waiting for 15 cold minutes! I'd ordered the chicken gyoza & tempura veges to start- i didn't realise they brought out the food when it was cooked- not together like most places. We weren't very happy with that. The gyoza we a bit slimy on the outside and the filling was molten hot! The tempura vegetables arrive when we'd almost finished and they tasted more like they were in a breadcrumb than a batter- they were a good quality veg though. For mains I'd ordered the beef udon & the vege curry. Neither dish blew us away especially as all I could taste in the curry was the actual paste the sauce gets made from and the udon noodles brought were actually ramen noodles. For £31 total bill I would have expected much better- especially since people rave about this place! I'd sooner try Wokon. read more

The restaurant is unassuming and from the front resembles a cafe. Inside, the decor is plain but clean. The staff are efficient and friendly, seating me immediately in an empty restaurant at 5:30. The menu choices are not extensive, featuring mostly starters, gyoza (sp?) and ramen dishes. The variety comes in the various combinations that can be had. Vegetarian dishes are clearly marked too, very handy! A quick chat with the waitress and I plumped for the set menu of £14.95 which netted me a starter, main and bottle of beer,yum. Food arrived in different orders, you can specify starter first or all together. The starter, chicken gyoza was piping hot and delicious with a soy sauce dip. The ramen dish was savoury and festooned with strips of beef and slivers of chilli. The main dish was mahoosive! Not daring to tackle the dishes with chopsticks, I opted for a fork & spoon. As ever, I can say nothing but great things for this stalwart on the Leeds foodie scene. As Mario says, it's a delight for the body, and the taste buds, with everything being cooked fresh and everything being full of flavour. It's perfect for a swift stop off, should you be in need of a plate full of goodness for under a tenner, but great if a group want to go for something joyous on an evening out. Don't be fooled by the low-key diner styled layout, nor the simple menu, since everything I've had here has been of top notch standard. I'm a creature of habit, and in some cases wish I could be more adventurous, but it now is (and likely always will be) that I can order nothing but the Yaki Udon as it is exquisite. Green tea still comes free of charge with your meal, and the service has always been swift, courteous, and efficient. It feels as though you've stumbled upon a true hidden gem when dining here, since it's off the main track of restaurants, especially being nestled in next to a fast food place and the quieter side of the Merrion centre. Nonetheless, this place still stands strong, and I know that I'll be back for more anytime soon. The plates are often so generous I cannot finish them, and on a week of rain and cold like this, I can think of no better place for respite and warmth. Get thee to Fuji Hiro! read more

The sushi in this restaurant is very delicious and authentic. The sashimi is also very fresh and inexpensive.

The gyoza at Fuji Hiro are spectacular. I do feel as though I ought to start with a more general observation than that, but it's the first thing I think of when it comes to Fuji Hiro. Dear god, the gyoza. Just talking about them makes me want to go back now. As for the rest of the menu, you will not be disappointed with any of your options. If you want noodles, and you're in Leeds, forget about that other big international noodle chain you might have heard of - come here. And, for the love of god, order gyoza. Downsides? It's casual, and the interior isn't exactly classy. It's a little bit out of the way. It's also quite small, so it can be difficult to get a table at busy times. But really? I don't care. This is a delight for the body and the taste buds. I love Fuji Hiro, this is an honest no frills eating experience. The decor is very simple and has been the same for nearly 20 years. I come here when I need looking after. The food is clean, healthy and very easy to eat. I love the deep fried Tofu and in particular Yasai Cha Han, which comes with a miso soup. This place is the fave with a few of my Friends, not a sentiment I share I am afraid( It always looks so miserable and tired, inside and out. That said the Service is pretty quick so ideal for a pushed Lunch break. I have never actually sent any food back, but have come close a few times. If your after a taste of authentic cuisine then come on in, the green teas on the house. Fuji Hiro is tucked away in an unassuming part of the town which seems wholly at odds with the experience you receive. Friendly staff usher you in and sit you down, tea is provided as you order. Don't worry whatever you choose will be coming to you in gargantuan proportions for the price you are paying. The restaurant may be small and lack a few mod cons but the fact is it feels and tastes authentic. You can see the chef preparing your food, other diners are at your every side excited smiles crossing their lips as steaming plates of deliciousness are proffered forth. I think it was the unexpectedness of the whole affair that makes me so taken with it all. The fact that there wasn't even a hint of Sweat and Sour about the place and no stereotype takeaway decorations. It was simple, it was welcoming and the food was great. This is a rather strange little restaurant that may not be instantly appealing from a quick look in the window. The interior is small with, as I remember, faux-wood walls that seem to close in on you a bit and quite am outdated un-fussed kind of look. And why not?...despite at first being a little put off by this, I soon found it to be part of the charm of the place. It was pretty busy, and all diners appeared to be tucking in eagerly. I ordered the yasai yaki soba, as it is my absolute favourite at wagamama. Hmm...it was quite nice. I feel pretty terrible favouring a big chain over this little independent family-run business, but I must admit Wagamama's version had given me high expectations, and I'm not sure the recipe at Fuji Hiro could quite compare. However, I admit they were up against very stiff competition in this instance and if I'd never tasted my favourite wagamama dish I would probably have really enjoyed it. And the portions were a very good size. I was taken to Fuji Hiro by an absolute foodie friend for whom only the best will do, and as she loves the place, and by the looks of it fellow yelpers do too, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. This is my absolute favourite place to eat in Leeds. I would go every week if the boyfriend didn't demand a modicum of variety. I always order the chicken katsu curry. I have tried, and enjoyed, plenty of other dishes, but this is my favourite and it's got to the point now when if I choose anything else I feel cheated. There was one awful occasion when I was the only one of a party of four not to order it... but I don't think I am ready to talk about that. I always find the service here very good. They always take our order quickly and then don't bother us again, apart from filling up the little cups of green tea. This pleases me. I loathe being bothered every five minutes. The portions are very sizable, which also pleases me. The chicken in the katsu curry has an amazingly crispy coating; I assume it's the skin although it never remains on my plate long enough for me to examine it. I usually don't eat skin because it's often wobbly and chewy (bleugh), but this is the best bit. The rice is lightly fried so there isn't oil dripping off, it just adds a nice taste to what can otherwise be a bit of a bland accompaniment. The prices are very reasonable as well. I am happy just thinking about it. Although I might brave the snow for a lunch for one. read more

Do you like tasty food? Do you prefer your tasty food in large amounts? Do you like value for money? Then look no further! Fuji Hiro is here to tick all of those boxes for you. I've been going to Fuji Hiro for a few years now, and I can honestly hand on heart say I've never had a bad meal here. I've tried most of the menu in some way shape or form - either ordering myself or being cheeky enough to try friends' orders (read: steal partner's food). I don't think I've tried anything on it that I haven't liked, but my personal favourite is the Ebi Gyoza (prawn dumplings) and Spiced Chicken Men (a mountain of gorgeous noodles, brimming with flavour, topped with chicken in a spicy but not too hot peanut sauce). The food is always freshly cooked, packed with flavour, and piled high on your place - they don't do portion sizes by half here! I think the only downside that some may see to this, if they're used to regimented service, is that they always bring the food out as soon as it's cooked - once I've received my main before I've fully finished my starter. And if in a group, it can be upsetting if you're the last to receive your main, a good five minutes after everyone else is tucking into a plate of deliciousness. The menu is really well priced for what you get. They also do a set meal if you're counting the pennies, £16ish for a starter (any choice), main (yaki udon) and a beer. Don't be discouraged by the set main dish - it's a fantastic main, my second favourite but the one I probably order more often. I'm already looking forward to my next meal, my workmates have been good enough to choose here for our Christmas lunch - really can't see us getting any work done in the afternoon with our warm full bellies, I'll just want a nap! read more

After all the reviews we were very disappointed. Service was very slow and food came out to the table in dribs and drabs. We had pre booked so they knew we were coming as a group. The room was crampt and even going to the loo was a bit of an experience. I'll be honest the food was some of the worst in the style I have tried. It was edible but was flavourless and not particularly warm when it arrived. They may have faired better with a smaller group but they shouldn't accept large bookings unless the kitchen can handle it. An update to the decor wouldn't go a miss either read more

This place had been positively passionately recommended to us, so we went expecting good things. I have to say we were a little apprehensive when we actually saw it: nothing could have more closely resembled a greasy spoon caff, and a completely empty one at that. However our first impressions were deceiving: as the place filled up rapidly, it became clear that we had merely arrived as the (spotlessly clean) place opened up for lunch. Been there twice - 1st time I was mistakenly brought meat dumplings instead of veggie ones, and only found out on biting into one of (not nice after you've been vegetarian for 26 years), the main course was some yukky sauce in greasy rice (chip shop curry sauce would be an accurate comparison), and the second time I had the veggie ramen which was tasteless hot water with some veggie protein in it that was again so greasy they just tasted of lumps of old fat. I couldn't finish either, even after trying to drown them in chilli sauce to give some flavour. If you want great tasting, authentic Japanese food then take a trip to Fuji Hiro. It has recently undergone a refurb which you may not believe when you look at it, but that is part of its charm. It is a no frills, what you see is what you get kind of place and I love it! I go there at least once a month and always indulge in the lean pork gyoza (one portion is enough for two people) and the Yaki Udon. I absolutely adore the thick udon noodles and spicy sauce. There is usually very little chatter round our table when we get tucked in! All is washed down with some green tea or a yummy asahi beer. Don't be put off by the decor.....as soon as you walk in you will be greeted by friendly staff and get really quick food that won't stay on your plate for long! read more

Fuji Hiro is probably my favourite restaurant in Leeds. No frills, just amazing amazing Japanese food at reasonable prices. The staff are friendly and accommodating. When I asked them vegan questions, they knew what they were talking about. My personal favourite is the yasai cha han, and it comes with veggie miso soup and pickles. Yum. I really dig this place for value for money and the portion sizes are pretty immense considering my appetite is that of a large bull. I think its one of the best Japanese places to go as far as authentic fodder goes. There's nothing posh about this place although I think it holds a certain charm about it. Sadly the quality seems to be going downhill and the prices still seem quite high. So the 3 star review is more for nostalgic reasons as this place used to be my favourite in leeds. My regular meal is the beef gyoza followed by chilli beef men ( yes, I order it because the name amuses me). These used to blow me away with the taste and general quality, but not anymore. The beef noodles are incredibly oily and greasy. My girlfriend ordered the cha Han, which sounded delicious on the menu, but not even the salt and chilli flakes that she tried to bury the food under could give it any kind of taste. Plus the chicken was a browny/grey colour. And £1.75 for a can of sprite!! read more

Ahhhh the wonderful noodle bar that is fuji hiro. This out of the way place in the back of the merrion centre is a good lil gem that the locals of Leeds only seem to know about which make this family owned and operated business just a lil more awesome. It's a bit on the expensive side but its worth it for the taste if the food and the big plateful portion. You can request green tea and that's free they also have 3 Japanese beers that make the noodles go down much sweeter haha. I recommend the spicy yaki soba and the gyoza both have never disappointed. no need for the chain noodle bars when this place is just ripe for the picking. get in a lil early on Friday and Saturday night because the place is small and it does fill up rather quickly. read more

When we went in we thought it was the equivalent of a diner where there was a limited menu and not even a dessert part for afters. One star lost due to the value, I think that while the mains are well priced the starters can be a little too expensive. I've been here a few times with my boyfriend and always loved it; the portions are always great and the food really tasty. However we've always stuck to the set meal which is a side order, yaki soba and a bottle of beer for around £15. Tonight we decided to stray away from the set menu and try others. I had the prawn dumplings (can't remember the actual names, sorry!) which were really nice and tasty. However my main was a fried rice dish with chicken, prawns, vegetables and Japanese pickles. There was absolutely no taste in this dish whatsoever and the chicken, if that's what it was, was greasy, overcooked and a weird grey colour. This place has great food! They also do rice noodles which are gluten free. Me and my wife have eaten here loads and we love it, they have renovated the place making it look and feel nicer. For anyone looking for authentic noodles in Leeds, Fuji Hiro should be top of your list. It's a small, family-run business and the inside is a stark, plywood panelled cafeteria that reminded me of the crap cafe the losing team are always exiled to in the Apprentice. But despite it's uninspiring interior Fuji Hiro has been a mainstay of the Leeds restaurant scene for years on the strength of it's noodle dishes and we were not disappointed. Thick, glossy udon noodles floated in a savoury broth, flecked with hot, fresh chillies. The portions are enormous as well and they have a generous hand with the meat, not just the noodles. I would advise avoiding the chicken katsu curry, which constituted a lone chicken breast under a dry and bland katsu sauce that tasted as if it had just been rehydrated from a packet. This however was the only source of disappointment in an otherwise lovely meal. But it's the noodles that are the star here. It's cheap (£30 for 2 mains, starters and beers), the staff are cheerful and while it might not have the slick interior of places such as Wagamama and Tampopo it has a simple charm all of it's own, plus much more honest and authentic cuisine. read more

Not sure how this place has such good reviews. Staff were friendly enough, but the food is super expensive- around the same price as Wagamama's or a bit more expensive in some cases, but it didn't taste good. My rice tasted like it had just been fried in oil and nothing else- it wasn't seasoned, and it just left a greasy feel in my mouth. My friend's amai udon tasted ok but also had an after-feel of oil. The only redeeming feature was the free green tea. Needless to say I won't be going back. Sorry! :( read more

This is probably the worst noodle bar in Leeds. The decor is very outdated and the katsu curry tasted more like chinese curry. The gyouza (fried dumplings) were extremely small. It's cheap but you get what you pay for. read more
