I will explain why I gave this place 2 stars. - I've been to ramen joints all over the world and was very excited to try my first ramen joint in Manchester, UK. In fact, I'm writing this review as I have just eaten here a few hours ago.
The 2 stars come from Customer Service and Specialty Item.
Let's first start with the Specialty Item - I got the Wagyu Shoryu Bun (8.50 GBP).
- The description on the menu states "highly prized, tender, fat marbled, beef yakiniku with shiso, daikon, shimeji).
- My first comment is that my wagyu shoryu bun had lettuce in it, which was not on the menu. It went with the shiso I'm assuming, however, the shiso and lettuce OVERPOWERED the wagyu. That's right - I took my first bite, with the wagyu beef in my mouth, and the lettuce overpowered the beef and lettuce was really all I tasted. The only time I tasted the beef was when I ate all of the lettuce. What a disappointment. Wagyu beef in my experience tends to be a thicker cut. The "wagyu" beef in this bun was so thinly sliced I felt like I was eating just plain beef belly (an item that you can order at KBBQ restaurants). Wagyu beef in Japan is definitely highly prized, but I would not say the same here. Please save your money from this disappointment. This was NOT worth 8.50 GBP.
Secondly, their customer service.
- They had 2 waiters and 1 waitress at the time that I came in (7:00pm)
- I didn't leave the restaurant until 8:45pm and I was eating alone.
The entire process took ages. Taking my order took 30 minutes (because no one came to take my order), my food took a while to come (35-40 minutes) and getting my bill took a while to get to me even after I had personally requested for the bill (20 minutes) - I had to ask twice for the bill.
The table next to me had a very similar experience with the wait times.
I don't mind waiting a while to get my food because as a customer I'm happy with waiting however long it takes for my food to come out perfect, but if preparing/making the food takes a long time, they should make up for it in the other areas.
Not to mention, their restaurant was half full. When I walked in, it was at 80% capacity, and after I had ordered my food, it slowly started to decrease until they were at 50% capacity and it stayed that way. This being said, either this place is understaffed, or their employees need more training on how to effectively remember what their customers request. Organization is totally off. All 3 staff members were serving me and asking if I needed anything. This means, all 3 of them did the same thing at the other tables (as I had observed). It wasn't a surprise that things didn't arrive on time because you don't know which employee to focus on as a customer and it shouldn't be the customer having to tell 3 different people the same thing just to get it done.
As I mentioned, they could've been understaffed but if they are, they need to make it known and hire more people. Otherwise, their staff members now need to be re-trained.
- Since I've seen the best of the best and the worst of the worst ramen joints - I will say that Shoryu Ramen's food - is not good enough for me to ignore their customer service.
Unless you see more than 3 workers working in this restaurant, I would be aware of stepping foot into this restaurant as you may spend just as much time as me in there. Remember, I dined alone. read more
