When I saw the following intro online on this restaurant's menu I knew I had to try it. "Thai food is traditionally shared, so KhaoSan Road would like to introduce a new way of Thai dining - Thai tapas! All dishes on our menu are small plates. We recommend ordering 3 dishes per person (or more if youre hungry) and sharing all dishes with the table so you can enjoy all the flavours Thai food has to offer." Thai food is one of the hubby and my favorite cuisines. AND I love to sample and share new foods. Perfect! We chose the following: 1) Moo Grop sauce Makarm (Crispy pork belly with spicy tamarind sauce) 2) Jaw Rang (Prawns with coconut milk, fresh turmeric, lemongrass & chilli) 3) Pad Thai Pra To Pee (Pad Thai noodles with egg, beansprouts and chives) 4) Coconut Rice 5) The special: Khao soi (a coconut curry noodle soup) Angie was our server. I told her what I liked and asked her what on the menu would best meet my expectations. She was right on the mark. (Of course the hubby ordered his normal - Pad Thai.) It took a little while to get our order, but they were extremely busy. And they were making specific dishes just for us. The dishes were unique. The chef made them his own and each one was delicious. This was a hit with both the hubby and me. The restaurant is very small with limited seating. We walked in without a reservation on a Wednesday night at 7:30 and , thankfully, they squeezed us in. Khao San Road - Thai Near Me - York, YOR

While in York I was staying at a hotel right next to Khao San Road. I passed by it a few times and decided to stop in one night for dinner. First the staff were very friendly, almost overly friendly. There is a full bar which offers all sorts of beer, wine and drinks, including Thai beer. The menu is full of Thai favorites, though perhaps a bit limited, there is something for everyone. The ambiance is cozy and intimate, almost like you are in someones home. We had a range of items, including spring rolls, chicken khee mao and another shrimp stir fry dish with coconut rice. I appreciate that they offer your choice of garlic fried rice, steamed rice or coconut rice with every entree. The khee mao was appropriately hot, which I really appreciated and the stir fry was spot on, as was the coconut rice. They kept our water and drinks refilled and continually checked to make sure everything was alright. Overall this is a very solid Thai restaurant and definitely worth a visit. Being Chinese, I've never wanted to go and dine in a Thai restaurant, because this is essentially a branch of Chinese cuisine, but with a twist. As with restaurants in York, this has a nice feel to it and not overly flashy. The menu is not cluttered and has a nice selection of curries, rice and noodle dishes. As I have a low tolerance for spicy food, I decided on the Deep-fried soft shell Crab as a started and Mussamun Nue as my main. Having tried the soft shell crab at Red Chilli, I somewhat had high hopes for Khao San's, but I was rather disappointed, as it felt like I was mainly eating batter and no crab! My main dish rectified my experience though, a Thai beef and potato stew with rice which I thought was nice. The portion size was decent with chunky pieces of beef and I was full at the end! All in all, it was a nice experience with friendly service. I am now intrigued and would like to visit again and try out their other dishes! read more

Great food and even better service. In fact the best service we have had in England in a long while. Good chicken salad. Nice pineapple fried rice and a great banana roll dessert. Visited here this evening, and I have to say it is one of the best restaurants I have visited in York. Great selection of food, and based on my friends' and my choices (and responses!) the food was all extremely tasty. Great drinks as well, and very attentive staff which certainly adds to the value. Solid Thai in the York tourist zone. Nice atmosphere, nice staff, well presented, correctly prepared Thai standards. Few locals seem to eat here. My only complaint is that prices seemed high - my $15 pad Thai with chicken would have been $10 in otherwise pricier San Francisco. Other Thai spots outside the city center also feature lower prices. That said both the flavors and ingredients were spot on. read more

Get your taste buds ready folks! This is my go-to-place if the crave for Thai is high (when isn't it?) and the yummy menu and cosy atmosphere are great for the romantic night out or family get together. This place tends to fill up quite quickly on Friday-Saturday and because of the low ceilings can get a bit noisy so book in advance to avoid disappointment. My favourite mains have to be their curries but if spice isn't your cup of tea I recommend the Pad Thai- safe and delicious! read more

Khao San is a wonderful restaurant with delicious food! I love the fact the the owners are Thai as well, you really feel as if you are getting some truly authentic food. I would recommend Khao San to anyone who loves and appreciates Thai food. Have given them a 4 star because it is on the smaller side, but the decor is beautiful. A new Thai restaurant in the shell of an old York stalwart. I've only been once, and it's only just opened, so I may come back to review again later. There is a lunchtime two course menu available which represents superb value. Tasty noodle dishes, stir fires and a couple of curries make up the mains, a few out of the ordinary. The starters, I would like to see some more interesting choices, but my satay was tasty enough. I certainly go back again at lunch, and will seek out an opportunity to try the evening menu too. read more

this is by far the best Thai in York. Its not fancy inside and the tables are close together! but the food is really excellent authentic Thai and service very friendly. read more
