I've always said this would be my first Yelp review, because I love this place and reviewing anywhere else first would be cheating... so here I am, keeping my word, with this long overdue review.
This is not only my favourite Thai restaurant, regardless of location, but one of my favourite restaurants period. I've been coming here since before it was called the Old Siam, stumbling in upon one of the first opening days by chance, and the service and food have brought me back again and again.
Upon moving here I had been to many Thai restaurants in York, and despite some of them being good I was disappointed again and again by the results of asking for any spicy dishes with extra heat... I stressed it, seriously, but was always met with something on the side, such as chilli flakes, which is simply not the same. Then came Old Siam... I gave the same speech, expecting the same "on the side" treatment despite being ever so hopeful, and then it happened... a glorious spicy dish was presented to me, the time had finally come. When the lovely owner asked if I was happy with the dish I let her know that I was thrilled with it, and then proceeded to explain my woes in the search of spice, to which she replied by showing me her order pad and pointed to writing I didn't understand while explaining that it translated to "HOT HOT HOT", underlined. The cook did not let her down, and I was hooked.
If you're not afraid of things on the hot side you must try the starter soups, either the Tom Yum or Tom Khah (forgive the spelling!), will be a perfect start to any meal... mind you these aren't so spicy that you wouldn't enjoy them, but if you're the type of person that thinks paprika on something is going a bit too far then these soups may not be for you... for all others, proceed and enjoy. Personally I tend to pair the Tom Khah (with mushrooms) with their Pad Thai (with prawns), and at lunchtime this is an unbeatable value for the quality of food on offer. I've also had the other noodle dishes, sometimes with the heat dialled up on request as mentioned, and I have liked every one... my friends swear by the curries here as well, but I'm not a huge curry fan at any establishment, (don't shoot me... I should be a fan, I know) so I do tend to go with the other dishes.
The place itself is lovely, but it's not huge so at peak times can be full... as such it doesn't hurt to make a reservation if your heart is set on the place.
The staff, and owner, are also some of the nicest I have come across, and it's not at all unusual for regulars to get (or give) hugs... they really are a personable bunch, which goes a long way in my book. (To be honest they could be rude as all get out and I would still come back for the food, but luckily that's as far from the case as possible.) Another point in favour of the staff and owner is that over the years if something changed a particular time, with a new cook perhaps, the owner took the feedback and adjusted the dishes back to their former glory... this is something you do not see enough of in my opinion, and another sign that they take their loyal customers very seriously.
I'm thrilled to see this place do so well, especially for a small independent establishment, and the owner has opened another location in Newcastle that I'm needing to get to... I have every faith that it will be as good as here. read more
