The food was delicious with excellent service and a cozy ambiance. Ate here twice while visiting the Lake District.

Excellent food. All fish and all perfectly prepared. Atmosphere was basic. Nothing special. Would definitely recommend it however.

Nice wine list a huge selection of gins, which seems to be typical in the Lake District.

Prebook in advance to avoid disappointment!…read more I booked this for our anniversary meal. Despite turning up on time we had to queue outside for at least 25 minutes with several others waiting for people to finish their meals. Once inside the waiter was super apologetic, and you could tell he needed a drink himself. The restaurant was very cosy with interesting pieces of art on the walls. A nice very traditional feel about the place. Anyway the starters consisted of various seafood and meat dishes to which you can size up as a main on average pricing of £7 to £15. I had the pork cheeks and himself the clam spaghetti. While we waited we were presented with canapés consisting of cheese and carmalised onions..the other truffle oil on crackers. These were a very tasty treat. The spaghetti was well made and the sauce light smothering the tiny clams. My pork cheek was super tender, and it lay perched on perfect mash, panchetta, black pudding, pickled onions in a tomato broth. Various bits of bread was also served to mop up this juice. Only criticism clam meat is sooo small in this country so not worth the battle against the shells for such a tiny reward. For mains I had the seafood special which was a bowl filled with mussels, clams, scallop, king prawns and longuistines swimming in a broth and fresh pasta. This was super tasty, cooked to perfection and presented nicely. My only gripe was I only had one at most two scallops. My other half chose the lamb which again was super tender, in a homely bed of mash, sauce and root vegetables. Super simple dish but everything was cooked perfectly. I was feeling quite full but the orange panacotta with orange sorbet was too tasty to miss. It didn't disappoint. Overall despite the disappointing beginning the service was impeccable and food really tasty. However I did expect a bit more in terms of creativity considering this was a Michelin star restaurant. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy your seafood especially.

It's not greasy or filled with heavy and sticky sauce. Not so on our visit. We arrived to be ushered to a table without a single word from the person who seemed to be overseeing the tables. He was dressed as though he was about to go out skateboarding! Hardy professional. When we finally got to place our order, while the waitress was pleasant enough, she had no idea whether one of the dishes we wanted contained fish or meat. She said she'd find out - but never bothered to come back to us. I didn't forget but decided not to pursue it. I ordered a diet coke. What arrived was flat and tepid, as though it was from a long since opened bottle. The food wasn't bad, per se, but it was really nothing special at all - certainly no better than any number of Chinese takeaways that I've been to.

Talking of the bill, there was an automatic 10% added, and there were only four of us. This is now becoming a de facto American style, and I'm not happy with this general mood. However, I didn't pay the bill, so it was left up to them. Total, with the service charge, £121.00. I tried to have the Mussel Platter, but they are already prepared and I didn't want the cheese... So had off the specials' board: King prawns in garlic butter. We asked for some bread to soak up the juices, and they provided. Also asked if wanted the black pepper, and this came at the same time as the request.... Good. Again, I ate off the board, and had the Halibut. Cooked to perfection, and, as recall, a reasonable price for the huge chunk on the plate. Asked if we wanted the black pepper, but this we had to wait, for her to complete an amusing chat with the chef en route.... Had a pint of: Lindeboom 5.0% £4.20 Food great, staff able to laugh..... Would I go again/ Yes. Would I take off points for the minor niggles, not really.

The big mussel came well recommended so when visiting for a friends birthday and she strangely decided that seafood would be the ideal pre-lash dinner, we happily obliged ! It has an interesting decor, the tables and chairs aren't really up to much, and the place setting could only be described as school lunch esque (paper place mats, bent cutlery). In fact, if you didn't look up you could easily convince yourself you were in your local primary school lunch hall. However, if you are able to look above waist height, you realise that it actually has a fairly interesting decor albeit a little dark, with an open kitchen and mezzanine floor above. They offer a Cheaper lunch menu and also have a great range of seafood on the main menu interspersed with offers, all for a very reasonable price. We opted for starters, I had scallops which were cooked very well. They came with a sweet potato purée which complimented nicely. A friend had fresh homemade calamari which had a crispy coating and the squid was not chewy or overcooked. We also decided to have some oysters. I don't know why. Oysters are terrible! They really are an acquired taste and it depends on whether you cook them plain or with some kind of topping, or if you steam or even grill them. The ones at big mussel pretty much come as they are from the ocean, with a slice of lemon on the side. I was definitely not a fan, but they were a popular dish that evening as many people around us were enjoying them, so I can only assume they were cooked well! I had a seafood linguine for my main, which, although the seafood was varied and fresh, didn't actually have much flavour. The seafood and pasta were cooked well, but I was expecting a stronger tomato base which unfortunately was not delivered. It was very watery and flavourless which didn't appeal at all! One of our party absolutely hates seafood and they didn't have the most extensive menu to cater for her.. she ended up with a roast chicken dinner that made me reminisce of the school dining hall again... Overall it was a good evening and we had a good laugh but I probably wouldn't go back. If you are really into your shellfish, they have a great selection and have good deals on buckets of steamed mussels which might be worth the trip, but if you don't like seafood, don't go to a seafood restaurant. Simples !

Nothing beats coming home to the North East than a load of freshly caught fish from the North Sea. Actually, let me rephrase that...Latimers used to be a small family run fish business where you could only buy what was caught the night before but now it has expanded and you can buy a whole array of fish. Fishing just off the coast still takes place though - so don't be disheartened. You can ask which fish has been caught locally. Apart from the really friendly staff, who are extremely knowledgeable about all of their fish (including how to cook it, what would taste nice with it etc) the shop and cafe is laid out in a welcoming way. You can either buy your fish from the counter to take away or sit in and try one of their delicious platters....Look at my photo of the crab platter (which was 14 pound!!!). It was incredible. However, those brave enough to go down the pokey back road its on will find themselves rewarded with a lovely dining experience, complimented by helpful and friendly waiting staff as well as delicious cooking using locally grown ingredients. As I said, Forge advertise themselves primarily as a fish restaurant, so it's no surprise to find their menu dominated by fish and other seafood dishes. I'm not a big fan of seafood generally but I love fish and have found some of the dishes at Forge are both interesting and tasty, such as the halibut steak and the grilled Dover sole, which although expensive is worth the price. Aside from seafood and fish dishes, their meat menu is similarly impressive as it boasts a good variety of options including roast duck as well as a good range of different steaks. The restaurant may not be in the best location in Southport but it's worth putting that to one side and giving Forge a go, particularly if you're a seafood and fish fan.

You'll get lovely traditional Brit food in here as well as a fantastic variety of very fresh seafood. In fact the catches of the day are available to view in an open fridge, and that ambience of openness continues right through to the open kitchen where you can see the dishes being created. The prices are really reasonable, especially if you take advantage of some of the special offers, and the service is lovely.
