Chapter 1: Introduction
To no surprise, I am having to write this review of optimum on my mobile hot spot. I'm taking my first semester of school for my doctorate program online to save the headache of the high living expenses of the city but it seems my headache would actually come from a different source, that being Optimum. I am highly reliant on a constant and stable internet connection to attend my live virtual classes, taking online quizzes, and taking online exams. To no surprise, I have been kicked out of numerous classes from the unstable internet connection provided by optimum and the last three exams I have taken have been interrupted as well. It has been so bad that I have kept track of all the internet outages since 9/25/22, since then I have had the internet go out 45 times. This does not include the week I was out of town visiting my in-laws. This does not include the headache of their customer service and technicians.
Chapter 2: Call Center Agent Nightmares
When I called to set up an appointment to get our home WIFI checked out I was able to get a technician the next day. Unfortunately, about an hour later after setting up the appointment for the technician, another call center agent from optimum CALLS ME and explains "there is nothing wrong with the internet, you just need to upgrade to our higher and more expensive plan." To begin, I tried explaining that the issue was not related to our internet speed, but rather it was the inconsistent connection. The call center agent kept going on about how that was not the issue and was trying to get me to cancel the technician appointment. The agent later transfers me to another call center agent, where the new agent explains that they are NOT supposed to call customers, let alone harass their customer to upgrade their plan and cancel any technician appointments.
Chapter 3: Technicians...
I have had a total of three technicians come out to check on my issue with the unstable internet that optimum has provided. The first guy called fifteen minutes before the appointment to make sure we would be at the house, was extremely friendly, answered all of our questions, and did what he could to find a solution. The problem persisted after the first technician and I gave it another week or so before I called again to set up another appointment. Fast forward and the second technician (who did not call to confirm the appointment) determines that the issue isn't with my modern/router but the issue lies in our alley where all the cable is located. He tells me that he is going to "put in for another technician to come and fix the issue in the next couple of days" (he doesn't give me a date or time). Fast forward to a couple of days ago and I am coming home from the gym (where I vented all my internet frustrations on the gym equipment) to see a technician about to leave my doorstep. Keep in mind, I did not get any date or time that the technician would be here. I was very lucky to not have to pay the $60 fee that I would receive for missing an appointment that I was never confirmed of (sarcasm). To add the cherry on top, the third technician didn't receive any of the information from the second technician that called the appointment in. I explained to this third technician that the second technician found the issue to be out back with all the box and its cabling. Out of curiosity I have the third technician show me the box and cabling in our alley way. THE CABLING WAS NOT EVEN BURIED UNDERGROUND. The power and internet cable which I assume has relatively high voltage that could definitely hurt somebody was, in fact, completely exposed. The third technician explains that this is something that he is unable to fix and will "put in for another crew to come out and fix the problem in the next couple of days." As now, I am currently waiting for a crew to arrive to fix the issue (which to no surprise I have no confirmation for a date and time) and I'm crossing my fingers that I am actually going to be home when they arrive so I won't have to pay for the $60 fee.
Chapter 4: Conclusions
It is safe to say that organization within the technicians management is disorganized, given the events from Ch. 3. Optimum's call center agents (maybe not all of them) will call you even when they aren't supposed to and hound you to upgrade your internet speeds to fix a solution that has nothing to do with actual internet speed, given from the events from Ch. 2. Long story short, save yourself the headache and inconsistent internet connections and go with another internet cable company. Optimum is SIMPLY not worth your hard earned money and valuable time. read more
