Nice little hotel in the Bronx. I stayed there during work in NYC; I just didn't want to be in Manhattan. Two blocks away from the metro, it is well situated and surrounded by restaurants, shops, beauty salons and an amazing super market. The rooms are spacious and quiet. Not sure about cleaningness; I wouldn't eat off of the desk or counters. Exceptional 24h service at the front desk, and good breakfast. It was a solid experience. read more

Update 10/2024 I've stayed at this hotel a few times over the years. And I've seen an improvement this visit compared to my last one in June 2024. The hotel, in general, is in a great location with easy access to food and the train, and you can find something late at night to eat for some reading. During my last few stays, I arrived late at night. I did stay in a room that has been upgraded, and I like the changes. Especially in the bathroom, but the smoke smelled on and off throughout the halls. Entry into the lobby area was sometimes too much, and just easy access to walk into the hotel for guests and nonguests. The late-night staff is always welcoming and helpful during my visits. read more

Our new home away from home! We visit NYC at least once a year to visit family. While everyone is primarily in the Bronx we lodge in Queens due to affordability and amenities. My husband asked me to check the Bronx (and against my better judgement/previous years of checking), I did. To my surprise, Opera House came up and checked ALL our necessary boxes! I literally checked 4-5 times because surely it's not affordable to lodge in the Bronx in a nice hotel...I was wrong! Cute, boutique in style and nestled smack dab in between the train station, street food stands, pizza shop, gyros, nail shops, and a grocery store across the street..literally everything in walking distance! The hotel is about a mile from Yankee Stadium so we were able to walk to the game which was nice. We found street parking easily, 80% of the time. There is parking available but it's kind of weird so we relied on street parking and had no issues. The room was super cute, like old world New York with updated flare. Seating areas in the common areas on each floor was nice. And free breakfast..can you believe that?! Hard pass on the juice machines, unfortunately. They are so egregiously watered down that you're drinking colored water...no exaggeration. Management, we understand saving and reducing waste, but if you're going to offer juice, give us juice. Breakfast area was cute and had a patio nearby so we were able to sit outside and have breakfast. The staff uses walkie talkies to communicate. I recommend not attempting to sleep past 7AM because it's not happening. The walkie talkies are so loud, you can literally hear the conversations verbatim, through the hotel room door (we experienced that every single day of our stay). That said the staff is nice and accommodating. Opera House Hotel is our new home away from home. I just asked my daughter last week of upcoming plans for our grandson so I can book our reservations. read more

The hotel is clean and the rooms are nice. The staff has been nice and accommodating both times I've stayed there. I know some people complain about the neighborhood but it is really isn't that bad, outside of the block where the hotel is located, you are near shopping, the subway and some quick food bites. The only con is the breakfast, its not the best, but they have a good coffee and hot chocolate machine. You can get breakfast at other locations near the hotel at affordable prices. read more

Going to be blunt, the location is in the middle of a ton of businesses and markets. Everything is within walking distance including the train and buses to the city and Yankees stadium. That's the positive, the negative is that there is drug use on the street. Being from Los Angeles, this is not something I'm a stranger to, but it can be alarming to anyone not used to an urban city. I never felt unsafe when I was walking around as the area is bustling with people. The hotel itself is great. I loved the accommodations and the staff were amazing. We were in a rush to catch the yankee game on check in and the staff got us in with no hiccups quickly so we wouldn't miss the first pitch. Krystal had amazing local recommendations. Everyone made us feel at home and their service was top notch. Continental breakfast was enough to keep us going - and if that's not enough there's a market behind the hotel to get a bacon egg and cheese :). A trip to the South Bronx led me here, I found this to be an excellent place to stay. Safe environment clean rooms for a great price. I was fascinated by the history, which is posted throughout the halls. A very clean hotel, -breakfast was average, but also unexpected, and I am pleased by the options of toast, oatmeal, cereal, and fruit. I certainly will stay here on my next visit. The Opera House Hotel was absolutely fantastic! Although I arrived at the hotel around 11pm, Abdul promptly checked me in and answered all of my questions to perfection! The area of The Bronx in which the Opera House Hotel is situated may not be for all tourists but I absolutely loved it. The locals were very helpful, I felt safe, and it was very close to the subway stations. In addition, the breakfast offered by the hotel was great and I found the decor throughout the hotel rather fitting. Personally, I highly recommend the Opera House Hotel and I intend to stay there again the next time I visit NYC. read more

I checked in and left to visit the Met, didn't feel the need to go up to the room. Got back a few hours late and one of the windows was open in the middle of New York Winter. Toilet had been used and the sink was not draining. I did what anyone would do an reported it, but good customer service was not available. First thing they ask is: why are you reporting this three hours after check in? Because I thought this was a reputable hotel and I did not expect the room to be in this condition!? Well, we are not changing your room: this empty hotel ( maybe saw two people the entire time) is sold out. Long story short, had to call my booking agent to get the issues resolved. Take earplugs! The AC made a metal vibrating sound, and there were always cars honking and people yelling outside early in the morning. Prepare for a tiny bathroom! Although the shower was fairly large with only a 2-3" lip (so basically handicapped accessible), you can barely squeeze your body between the toilet and the bathroom door in order to get close to the mirror while brushing teeth, doing hair, etc. ; the bathroom also smelled strongly of sweat, mildew and men's cologne, and there were lots of long hairs in the shower and all over the floor. The shower design is such that water runs down your elbow right through the shower curtain gap onto the bathroom floor, such that it's always wet in that corner and smells really mildewy. Don't count on the breakfast. They actually use plastic coffee cups; and there's nothing to eat but crap pastries, instant oatmeal, white bread for toast, additive-filled yogurt... FYI it's on the mezzanine level, between the 1st and 2nd floors, overlooking the front desk. Parking: There are 7-8 parking spots at the hotel, though there's parking on the street and apparently a parking garage nearby. I think we would've been able to find street parking, and despite the sketchy, garbage-covered neighborhood, I think the car may have been fine, but we got a spot at the hotel - but ONLY after the front desk guy spent about ten minutes explaining what a big favor he was doing for us, way too obviously angling for a big tip. We did really appreciate it, but that attitude and expectation was a turn-off, and we ended up saving tips for housekeeping. Good: The room was spacious and had two windows that opened. It was just a few minutes walk from the subway station at 149th St and 3rd Ave. Bad: someone from the front desk suddenly barged in our room, without even knocking, despite our having a do not disturb sign on the door. We never found out why. The room didn't feel that clean. The room smelled bad. There was a barking dog next door for hours one day. read more

Hotel was beautiful. They have parking if your are lucky (only about 4 spaces), but there is parking near by. Rooms are nice and roomy and clean and the added continental breakfast was nice, but just OK quality. Only issue was we had a room that faced interior courtyard formed by surrounding buildings and from about 12a to 2:30a, someone in the building next door was on their balcony, blasting music through a huge speaker (seriously, I can sleep thrpugh a lot, but this was almost club speaker loud). Called desk and we knew there was likely little they could do, they seemed indifferent to the issue. Mentioned again at the front desk in the morning while checking out, and the response was, "oh, yeah, they do that." so apparently this is a common experience. So, if you like risks and are feeling lucky you won't get a room facing that courtyard, you will likely love your stay here. We are a little more risk adverse, so will likely stay elsewhere next time. read more

I needed something, called downstairs and it was at my door in minutes, With a Smile! Jonathan was at the front desk, very nice, helpful and well versed. It was So Quiet, we never got to taste the breakfast because it was so quiet, we kept sleeping past it! LOL I can't brag enough about this hotel, it was lovely, peaceful, private, surrounded by restaurants or you can do door dash. I wish I could give 5 but I am heading into a review from what I would call... a five star (m)hotel in the Bronx. Many points but let's start with the first...its the bronx! Also, the south Bronx for those that do not know the history. Surprising as this was (because I personally never considered sleeping in the Bronx), I must say that it is a very nice spot that I would come back to if the need to be in the area arose again. So it is listed as a hotel but as mentioned above it is a nice motel. You will not find any amenities such as a pool, gym, room service and what have you. However, you will have a modern place to crash with a bit of history at a reasonable price for the city. Let me add a note about pricing. If schedule is flexible keep checking because I paid about double what I saw quoted a couple days later (both weekdays/same month). Positives: *Cleanliness. A+. The entire place seemed well kept and very clean. *Comfy bed. *Quick and easy check-in. *Courteous and professional staff. *Close proximity to many food options, subway a couple blocks away as well as gym,banks,convenience stores,etc. *Very decent comp breakfast. I would rather not sound like a glutton so I will just list what I saw available: coffee/espresso machine,juice machine(4 options), tea, bananas,apples,fruit bowl, granolla, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, toast & bagels, assorted pastries. Pretty much all your necessities. Nothing impressive but better than a lot. *Parking lot? I noticed a lot out the back door but not sure if it belongs to the property. A note in reference to earlier mention...the building does have some history and actually was a opera house where some famous names such as Houdini performed. I like the "Opera House Times" which you will find in the room to shed more light and find fun facts. Negatives: Nothing really bad to say. I didn't get to stay here but the customer service is out of this world!!! I had a canceled flight that didn't allow me to get to the hotel. But the staff called to check if I would be able to make it. And did their best to accommodate by changing schedule. Unfortunately, things didn't work out for me and my family to stay. The room and facilities were very clean and most of the staff was helpful and kind. Sadly, the staff were not consistently wearing masks in the public facing and communal areas. The hotel has only 4 guest parking spaces, including one handicapped space, that are free but on a first come, first serve basis. Our toilet kept overflowing and they tried and failed to fix it 3 times. After our first night and for the next two nights our A/C kept failing and the room got to 75 degrees again and again. No one offered us a new room, so it kind of sucked to not have a working toilet and to wake up sweating I the stuffy room. Notably, the outdoor temp was never above 65 that weekend. This place is so charming. A trek from the city but the subway is right outside the door and a shared uber will only cost around $12-$15. This was an accidental booking for me but absolutely love it and the staff are warm and friendly and super helpful. Greatly appreciated the help of manager Emilio and front desk assistant Jefferson was extremely kind and attentive. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've stayed in in a NY hotel. The room was equipped with mini fridge AND microwave and they have a little coffee center downstairs with some additional amenities. The surrounding area is a little rough but great if you like a place with character... not sure I'd recommend for a single young female etc but I liked it. read more

There are pros and cons to the Opera House Hotel. It is a lovely hotel, spacious rooms and well appointed, decorated with photos and playbills from the operas that were once held there. The con, and it's a big one-it's in the South Bronx and there is no parking. There is a parking garage a block away but it closes at 10 PM and once you're parked, you're not moving. Apparently, the hotel only has 5 parking spots. My suggestion is that they contract with one of the local parking garages for a guaranteed number of parking spaces for guests. That would be a tremendous help because street parking in the South Bronx is challenging. read more

We (family of 5), came to the bronx to go to a Yankee game and visit Fordham University and needed a hotel room for one night. I booked the Opera house based on the pictures of the spacious rooms and previous reviews. I could not be happier with how everything turned out! The room was exactly as it appears on the website--we stayed in the double Queen room, and even had a pull-out queen sofa bed. This was absolutely perfect for my family--3 teenagers, hubby, and me. The room was clean, and beautifully decorated and the staff at the front desk were awesome! We even scored one of the parking spots! My husband and I traveled from California. We stayed overnight at the Opera House from 12/5/19 to 12/6/19. I am so glad that we decided to book at the Opera House. The staff was very friendly and professional. My check-in and check out was fast and uneventful. I heard no noise from my room as others stated that they experienced. The room and the bathroom were pristine and spacious. The bed was very comfortable. We used "Lyft" to get from the Airport to the hotel and to all other excursions. The Lyft drivers are all near, so the wait was less than 5 minutes. The breakfast was pleasing with lots of choices such as yogurt, boiled eggs, pastries, bagels, juices, coffee, tea, and fruit. Some reviews speak of this being in a not so good part of town...we did not see any issues with that...so please don't let those reviews deter you. The Opera Hotel... Very nice hotel. I'm embarrassed to admit I'm from NY and never even knew that this hotel existed. I usually frequent hotels in the city but I decided to book this one based off of the reviews and because I was going to be in the Bronx. I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival. Honestly I was drunk when I got here so I didn't notice the area until the next day when I was leaving. Omg lmao----inside of the hotel is like a 4/5 star in NYC somewhere but you get slapped in the face by reality as soon as you exit those big pretty doors. You are left in the middle of the hood wondering how and why you got here lol But honestly don't let that take away from the hotel. It's really beautiful and extremely clean. The rooms are nice and they have very high ceilings. Huge closets, comfy beds, tv, nice bathroom, etc. The carpet was so clean I could see the lines from the vacuum lol. Cleanest hotel I've stayed in in a while. They also have breakfast from 7-10 on the mezzanine floor. That was a plus for me because I didn't notice they offered that when I booked it so I got more than I expected. The breakfast was nothing crazy. Your typical simple hotel breakfast with cereal, muffins/pastries, bagels, toast, yogurt, fruit, etc. The wifi isn't free and I wasn't about the pay for it. They should change that. I'm not sure about the parking situation because luckily I checked in very late Saturday and I didn't have to worry about parking. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again because despite the location, it's a wonderful hotel. I felt comfortable because they take pride in the hotel and keeping it clean and up to par. Arrived early anxious to check in and get to the Yankees game. Kevin was very helpful and got us checked in quickly! Room 313 is a corner room tucked down at the far end of the hall and was quiet (quiet from most noise in the hall) but not quiet from street noise. But that's ok. I came to see the Yankees win, not to count sheep! High ceilings in the room gave it a feel like it wasn't your standard fare hotel room. After all it is a restored opera house. Ck out the hotel newspaper on the dresser to read about the cool history of the building and the Bronx. Room cleanliness A+ (larger garbage pails would be helpful as would a shower that drains well). Would have rated 5 stars but cont breakfast fell short. Stale pastries and warm yogurt but there's a Dunkin across the street. We will definitely be back. We arrived late on a Monday night after having our Southwest flight cancelled so, needless to say, we were tired and a tad stressed. But Jonathan, Duane, and Myrna at reception EXCEEDED our expectations of customer service and were just plain amazing. They went above and beyond to get us into our room quickly as well as giving us a late check-out without us asking (and without us having to get up early to call in the AM). They lock the hotel door after a certain hour (maybe midnight?) so that made us feel extra safe because the neighborhood is a tad rough around the edges at night. The room and bathroom were clean and we had enough extra towels for four of us! There is free light complimentary breakfast offered from 7a-10a and all guests have free access to the Crunch Fitness gym next door which is an added bonus for a gym junkie like me. Just thank you!! Do yourself a favor and stay here. Plus, how cool is it that this building used to house the Bronx Opera House where famous celebs like Houdini and George Burns performed?? read more

I truly love this hotel for a couple reasons. Price. And it's uniqueness. An old opera house turned hotel. The rooms are large and nicely decorated. We only stayed for one night it actually wasn't even 24 hours total. However during our short time everything was clean and nice. I liked the mezzanine level and hoped i would make it up in time for their continental breakfast but we ended up going out for brunch instead. The room was nice and spacious bigger than we thought it would be and i liked the bathroom as well, it had a rainfall shower head (my fav). Our room faced another building so their was no view but like i said we were hardly there so it didn't matter. I took off one star purely for location. My husband picked this hotel and if i had honestly known were it was i would have vetoed it but... you guys really made me feel comfortable. It's a long ride over to the city and walking back to your hotel at night feels a little scary to me. As soon as i stepped off the street i felt good, so i would possibly be open to another stay. My daughter recently started working at a news station in NYC and needed to spend a few nights in the Bronx for that purpose. Upon arriving we quickly realized that the location was not safe. The hotel is really beautiful and the room was clean, spacious and bright. We explained our concerns to the front desk, this woman was a darling. She assisted us in the process of receiving a refund. Carlos the manager reached me the next day via email with my refund details. Although my daughter did not have a place to stay in the Bronx, the staff went above and beyond. Thank you! I will never stay at this hotel again. I walked into this hotel and was not greeted by Kevin who was at the main desk. I had to ask to be checked in. When I gave him my credit card, he refused to run it as credit. Because I was using a work credit card, I had not set up a pin. Kevin replied that he couldn't help me and just looked at me. He told me that there was nothing he could do and that it was my problem.Thankfully, I was able to get through to Bank of America and set-up a pin.
