Been here many times because it is a favorite of my in-laws who live down the road from it. Typically we are there for dinner and drinks which is always OK. I've never had a bad experience there but I have never been wowed by the food either. The bar area is nice and comfortable and the specialty drinks/martinis are pretty good (especially the raspberry and mango martinis). The staff is nice and the menu is huge. i generally find that the larger and more diverse the menu and less impressive the food is because they don't take the time to specialize in anything but this makes it convenient for larger groups. Had brunch there a couple weeks ago for the first time and it was pretty typical of a Greek-style restaurants. The wait for our food was quite long but the service was still attentive. My wife and I went to the Open Flame restaurant last night to celebrate her birthday. She loves the Grouper there. It is very good! Last night I had their leg of lamb. It was delicious!!! I've been to Open Flame twice now, and can say I've enjoyed my experience both times, but wasn't wowed out of my mind. Food: Solid. Plenty of options (get their garlic mashed potatoes!), entree portions are normal for a woodfire grill-esque place, and good variety in types of food on the menu. Ambiance: Again, solid. Nothing spectacular, but a nice quiet, intimate place where you could take either a business colleague or a romantic interest. Service: Above average. I've been impressed both times I've been with the waitstaff. Very attentive, but not overly intrusive at the table. My friend and I came here on a Sunday morning for some brunch and hang out time. They have eggs benedict, omelettes, skillets, waffles, pancakes, french toast, crepes, and more. I had the crab cake eggs benedict, which I was hesitant to order since the last time I had it was in San Diego and it blew my mind. This wasn't too bad at all, a great showing for Wisco. They have a great outdoor area, with a bar and plenty of seating. They also have a nice indoor area and bar. The service outside was ok, inside was great. You can tell the staff here is close with their regulars and that there is a family-like atmosphere. Overall a nice experience. I would come back. read more

We've been to the Open Flame before enjoying a great meal for the price. We met for prime rib last nite (Saturday Special). We met before 6PM and gave our order. Basic food, make sure you don't have a complaint because the customer is not right here. The menu should be ALOT smaller, makes it feel like your at a regular diner. The patio at night in the summer is the only inviting aspect of this establishment. read more

Came in around 7 on a Sunday evening, and was sat immediately as there were only a few other tables. Service was prompt, but that was the only good thing about this place. This was my grandmother's choice, and I can't imagine anyone other than the elderly eating here and enjoying it... The MUSIC! Was literally muzak. I thought that was fazed out years ago. It only added to the dated atmosphere. The bread was excellent, super white and soft. The starter salad was basic and fine, but the server took it away while i was still eating it. I was actually chewing my food when he asked if i was done, really? So fine, if you're that anxious, just have it. I've worked in a casual - fine dining restaurant for 10 years, and I'd only ever consider that if the entrees were coming up in the window, so I hoped that was the case, and it seemed to be, the food followed shortly after. I ordered a flounder? Special, and it was meh. The ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes was cold and dry. Now, I looove mashed potatoes, even garbage box ones, so it's clearly hard for me to say no to a spud, but I left most of them on my plate :/ Two lil pieces of asparagus and two shrimp accompanied my fish, which I ate, and were neither good nor bad. Mushy, near spoiled crab cake filling was placed between my fish, I hope they at least threw it away that night, I'd hate to think of what that would taste like with another night in the fridge. My boyfriend ordered some kind of chopped salad, which looked good, and he seemed to like it. Someone else ordered the club sandwich, which looked good and was a good size. I can't really speak for them though, as the food wasn't discussed, but that is never a good sign when going out to eat. By the time the bill came it was maybe 8:15, and we were the last ones there. I understand wanting to go home, waiting on your last table, but for God's sake, subtlety! The host/manager? Was standing at the edge of the dining room just staring at us. All the kitchen guys and our server were walking around with their coats on, so I tried to hurry us out. This was unfortunate though because my boyfriend and I were visiting, I don't see my Wisconsin family very often, and this was the last I'd get to see my gramma and aunt before we take off. We went here with some family that was visiting from out of town. We had over a dozen people in our party. We ordered drinks, appetizers, and entres. Whenever I am in a group this large I always assume that the restaurant wants to please us because are dropping a lot of cash here since 20% gratuity is included in the bill. My brother is allergic to nuts. Nuts are also a known allergen. He knows what foods are safe to order and what foods aren't. Classic American dishes are safe for him (burgers, chicken, pot roast, potpies, pork loin, etc) are safe for him. He doesn't order anything fancy from the menu and is sure to ask his server if he has any doubts. This restaurant had classic American dishes (the exception was some fancy fish and salad specials), so he was certain he was safe. He ordered the pork loin that came with mixed veggies and stuffing with gravy. A few minutes in to our meal he put something on my plate and asked, "What is this?" I was certain it was a dry piece of giblet or something. Turns out it was nuts. I have not heard of nuts in stuffing (Martha Stewart might do that, but she wouldn't come to this place). This is not some fancy gourmet place. My husband got a BLT and they served it on white Wonder bread- so we figured the stuffing would be made form the same white bread. My brother asked the waitress and she confirmed that it was nuts. Thank goodness my mom was there and she had her epi pen that my brother could use. He had to use it right there in the restaurant. I spoke to the manager, as my brother has a short temper and he was shaken from using the epinephrine. I just wanted the manager to know what happened and that they really should mark this allergen on the menu. Nuts are such a common allergy these days. The manager told me that they used to have it labeled in their old menu but not in the new one (which is exactly what the waitress had said). I told him that they need to change it back asap. Then the manager blamed us for not asking the server. I pointed out to him that there was a fish dish on the menu that was crusted with macadamia nuts. We assumed that nut dishes were clearly marked on the menu (for example- THIS FISH DISH!). He still blamed us. 1. Stuffing is a pretty classic food 2. This wasn't a very classy/fancy place that would use fancy gourmet recipes 3. He should have been happy we didn't have to call 911 4. We could totally press charges and sue over this if we were a litigious family 5. Isn't the customer always right? Especially since I was being so kind to him and spared him from my brother's rage. This leads me to the conclusion that we were safe in assuming that the stuffing was sans nuts and that this manager should have treated us better. This is not a restaurant that we want to spend our money. Even if we had not had this crazy allergy situation happen, my food was pretty lame. My dish came with 4 stalks of asparagus for my vegetable, yet the carb and protein portions were huge. There is an ongoing obesity epidemic in our country, right? I would have been ok paying more for less carbs and a moderate protein serving if I could have had more veg. If you want middle of the road food, for prices that are a bit too high, with shady management- this is your place. read more

I just stopped in there moments ago with my husband for an impromptu breakfast while his tire got fixed. The decor and ambiance are wonderful. I'd be happy to go on a date there. The food seems to be well-thought-out, and the menu is extensive. One complaint on my part, though. (And this may have been a one-in-a-million shot on the menu that it's what I ordered) I was seeing what they had, and crepes really caught my eye. The had a decent selection. And savory crepes! I feel like people forget that those tender morsels make a great vessel for nearly any filling! Not just fruit and whipped cream! They offer a Spinach Scrambler Crepe, and I was delighted to try it. Crepes stuffed with scrambled eggs, sauteed spinach and bacon, all topped with hollandaise sauce. Sounds delicious, right? We ordered orange juice. It was obviously from concentrate, and watered down. Whatever, it's orange juice and our fault for not asking them to put vodka in it anyway. My husband ordered plain pancakes. They were good. My crepes arrived, and something seemed.... off. Everything seemed fresh (though I believe the hollandaise is made from a mix - I'm not 100% sure, though) but my crepes were sweet with a hint of cinnamon. I had thought for sure they would use a different crepe batter for savory crepes (it only takes 5 minutes to throw the batter together in a blender for pete's sake!) but every bite I took tasted like a gang fight between the Sweets and the Savories on my tongue, and I still don't know who won. Maybe the lesson here is that there are no winners when we fight. *cue lesson-learned interlude* Our server didn't ask how the food was at any point. He seemed really young and new to the biz. We'll probably be back, but I'll be more careful about what I order. read more

My husband and I had breakfast. They came to the table and my poached eggs in my benedict were solid hard. So we asked the waiter to correct this. 10 minutes later, my husband's breakfast was cold and the obviously ticked off cook sent my eggs to me totally uncooked. I opened the yolk and all the slimey white rolled onto my plate. Evidently with him you get either hard or uncooked eggs. My husband asked to see the manager. He apologized and said he would be happy to not charge us for either breakfast as one was cold and the other wasn't cooked properly. We said we didn't complain for a free meal, but please talk to the cook about these issues. He assured us he would and that breakfast would still be on him. Well, the check came, full price, and we saw the manager just walking around. Because of how we were treated, I'm betting he didn't speak to the disgruntled cook. Very disappointing experience. Management had a bad attitude as well. Maybe that's why his cook does too. read more

To start, we went unknowingly on a packers game night. The place was empty, minus the bar, which was not loud at all. Service was prompt. Water within seconds of asking for it. A lot of specials to choose from and the menu had a wide variety of meals. We ordered what I called fries mozzarella with marinara and spinach. DELICIOUS! We each had a side salad. One with ranch and the other with greek. No complaints. My boyfriend had a 6oz parmesan filet mignon with fried mac and cheese balls and bacon wrapped jumbo shrimp. He killed it!!! I chose the breaded jumbo shrimp, sautéed veggies and baked potato. I ate till I could eat anymore!! So good!! We were pleasantly surprised with the price along with the food! Never again even if it's not a holiday. A 40 minute wait became an hour or so. The server was horrible; reaching over people to hand drinks and entrees instead of walking around the table. The manager even came to the table and asked what he could do. We asked for bread that he never delivered. And of course when the entrees arrived two of them were wrong. Took my Father for Father's Day to the Open Flame. It was his choice. After eating there, I am wondering if my Father has any taste buds left? Service was HORRIBLE. I hate it when I feel like our server seems to have better things to do and that we are a burden. Our table was very wobbly, and one of us had to make sure we kept a corner down so it would stabilize. They had a condensed menu which was smart, I'll give them that. But then the food should have been warmer and we should not have had to wait as long for it. I suggested Blue's Egg which is excellent in all facets. When I think we could have gone there. We had Fish Fry recently at The Open Flame for 75 people. Very positive reviews from our group on the fish, chicken and pasta entrees. The main dining room was perfect size for our group, wait staff was very efficient, cocktails were great, plenty of parking ...all in all it was a very pleasant evening for all of us...very enjoyable, and I would recommend The Open Flame for anyone holding a large group function or just a meal for yourself. This was my third visit to Open Flame, and we will not return. The first time the service was spotty, and the salmon was literally so overcooked it was crunchy. The server never asked how the food was, nor did she check back with the table after serving the table. The second time we tried the place for brunch. I had huevos rancheros; it was pretty mediocre at best. The description states that the eggs were on a tortilla, which one would assume meant a soft tortilla, instead it was essentially one hard taco shell that was flat with two very fried eggs, so hard they could have doubled as hockey pucks. And a salsa that was not great. The third time, (don't ask why I gave this place 3 tries) we walked in and were seated immediately. We were seated at the front of the restaurant, practically feeling like we were on display as the rest of the customers were taking up the booths against the walls. The water person promptly distributed water to all of us. And then we waited, and waited, and waited. After 15 minutes, nobody came to take a drink order, ask us if we had decided what to eat, or apologized for not taking care of us. As my partner and I discussed what our course of action was going to be the maitre d and I established eye contact, I raised my hand to get the person to come over, and instead the woman kept on walking. It was so rude, and uncalled for. We left immediately, and told a group of people about our experience on the way out. I always say if you have an okay time, you probably won't tell anyone about it, but if it's horrible, you will tell plenty of people. So here you go Open Flame, I'm going to tell anyone who asks what terrible service you have given. read more

My husband and I belong to a very large fish fry group. The Open Flame is an excellent pick for a Friday fish fry and for lunches on Sunday's. It is actually one of our favorite places. They're open for breakfast and my book discussion group had the best breakfast a restaurant could offer. Everything is done to perfection, and this is a consistent, over a long period of time observation. This place knows how to serve larger groups of 12 - 16 people without problem orders. Came here for breakfast on Easter when they had a limited menu. Understandable. But all I wanted was a sausage omelet. They have eggs. They have sausage as proven by the side of sausage that came with my food. They steadfastly refused to make me a sausage omelet because it "wasn't on the menu." We ducked in here for breakfast just because it was next to the place where I was getting new tires. I wasn't expecting much: it's your typical south side restaurant with a similar menu to a lot of its neighbors (at least, when it comes to brunch and vegetarian dishes). My BF ordered some fish off the menu I can't remember which one but it was WAY too salty :(. We told the waiter and the manager came over and offered us a $25 gift certificate and took the fish off the menu. I think he offered me another gyro but by this time I was tired and the horse radish left a bad taste in my mouth. I think he should've comped the gyro too. We had a group of family to Open Flame to celebrate a family occasion. There was a group of 24 of us and we had pre-reserved a room for the lunch. We were told that the tables would be split apart, but it was one LONG table that went through the room. Ok, I can deal. Service was ok. Things were done quickly but often our drinks were left empty. The food was amazing. We offered our guests 3 options. 1/2 rack of ribs, cod oscar and steak with shrimp. The cod was to DIE for good. The crab and scallops on top was plentiful and the fish was very well cooked and seasoned. The steak and shrimp was raved about by our guests which I appreciated and the ribs were good, but not off the chart awesome. Dinner went smoothly but then disaster struck. They had pre-cut the cake. I was heart broken. We were unable to get any pictures with our daughter with her cake (it was her baptism) and to make matters worse, I hadn't even seen the cake as my in-laws brought it. No one had asked about cutting it or if we were even ready for it. To top it off the waitress was less than helpful when I asked why. I was told that it was their procedure to just keep the meal moving and they always cut the cake. Wow. I was floored. I have never had an event like this where they did not ask before doing something like that. The manager apologized and waived the cake cutting fee but that did not soften the blow. If you do have an event there, be sure to give concise instructions so that things go as planned. Needless to say although the food was great I will not be back to Open Flame again. read more

I was looking for someplace new for breakfast. I've had good dinner experiences at Open Flame; I checked Yelp and saw they serve breakfast. A look at the online menu and I was able to narrow down my possible choices. Service was quick and courteous, especially considering our waiter was training a new person. The food arrived reasonably quickly, exactly as ordered, and tasted about as expected. The coffee was weak. I'll be back for breakfast now that I know they're serving it. read more
