I'm just an old guy getting ink during my midlife crisis. Suddenly at 50, I decided I needed tattoos, but such is life. My wife had previously gotten a couple of pieces here and highly recommended Onizuka so I knew I would be in good hands. I had the pleasure of connecting with Chuy for my first piece; my sons' middle names done in Canterbury Old English. Chuy is a talented artist and an absolute perfectionist. Everything about these guys is next level. From mark handling the front end to the artist's themselves. Great crew of guys here , very nice , not arrogant and they are serious about their work. I spoke with Hori Chuy about what I roughly wanted and let him be his creative self and decide the rest. I was not disappointed with the results. The only spot in California or the US for that matter that I would trust my body with... Ok - you know how some people go to Sushi Bars and have this incredible life-changing experience...and other people come in, and come out never wanting to return? Well, often times - it has to do with what you bring to the table - in your energy, expectations and attitude. Onizuka staff can look like badass bikers but they're very traditional, polite and etiquette driven Japanese. So if you can ignore their "look" for a sec - focus on the fact that you need to understand a little bit of respectful behavior by their standards - that is, the standards of master Japanese artists and artisans. And they are masters. Couple suggestions: 1. Call in advance, speak to reception. Then email some visuals of what you're after 2. When you arrive for a consultation, come EARLY. Do not show up late. 3. Be respectful of the fact that the artists are likely tattooing some other client and need quiet/concentration to focus, so when you enter, keep the noise level to a minimum There are 4 artists working at Onizuka, 3 of which I am familiar with. Each one has a special style and skill set. They are all different, and ALL excellent. In general, they specialize in traditional Japanese tattoo style (and techniques like tebori) but certainly produce un-traditional results. The difference between going here, and to some non-Japanese artist to get a "Japanese-style" tattoo is like...to borrow a sushi analogy again...eating a Sushi-Pop (they exist!) vs Omakase at Kimagure or Mako. You don't just get what you pay for...you get what you deserve. And those who put the time and energy into their research for the perfect tattoo artist - particularly in the realm of traditional Irezumi art...WILL...MUST come here. Cost: Reasonable but as this will take longer than your usual "flash-tattoo" based-spot, it will be a financial investment for many. Talent level: Incredible. See the pic I posted and tell me where you can find that skill level anywhere but Japan. Pain: Each artist is different but I would not expect that a large back or chest piece is going to be a lot of fun from a pain perspective. Be prepared. On the other hand, after about 15 min, you usually tune out a bit - what the Japanese call "MU" or nothingness ...try it, you'll love it lol They are booked up for a couple months at least so make sure to get your name on a waiting list. Sometimes there are open spots so check back often. In general, you will end up with a better result if you allow your artist to take the lead and create something based on your desires but not exactly created by you. If you want that, suggest you check out the 100's of other spots that will put anything you like on your body. All stars goes to Frankie. The drive and parking fee's a bitch but all worth it in the end. I had 3 chinese characters ink'd on my back, and Frankie was ridiculously patient and helpful. He confirmed with the Japanese/Chinese assistant there to make sure all of the characters carried the right meaning (take spanglish for example: "That girl's hot" and "That chica's muy caliente" ... doesn't translate very well does it). I can't stretch my neck that far back to see the characters, but I've been told by my chinese friends that the characters are extremely hard to draw, and especially as neat as they appear. I received even more compliments by random people walking around on college campus. When it came to doodling on my kitty, Frankie went ahead and grabbed a bunch of screens to maintain my dignity, and some napkins for himself so that he ONLY sees the specific space I want ink'd. I got my first tattoo here by Chuy (on 3/30/17) and it was a great experience. I, first, made an appointment online through email. Marc replied quickly and I was able to get a session in with Chuy just a month later. There were availabilities much sooner, but I was not able to make it due to my work schedule. The shop itself is really cool and clean, and they have a parking lot, which is convenient. They play good music, which made the time go by quicker. Marc, the receptionist was really cool too! Since I was just getting a tattoo of a peony on my thigh, I was able to just come in on my appointment date and get the tattoo done that day. Chuy is a really nice guy and his work is amazing. Had to reschedule like 3 times to save up for the big day but the scheduler was pretty cool and never gave me any problems. Cash only. Jakoh gave me a lion tatt on the inside of my arm. Emailed him a photo and he added his own artistic shading so it wasn't a straight line, more fading into appearance. Looks like someone got graphite and sketched onto my arm. He said a good tip for tattooing is to practice to extend the lead in a mechanical pencil really long and draw without breaking the lead. Had a really light touch, no scarring at all in the entire area. Truly an artiste. read more

I'm finally writing my review, which is long over due since I've had like 7 sessions with Taka now. Originally my friend was supposed to get tattooed and I was just there to tag along, but once we arrived at Onizuka Tattoo things changed. When we entered we were greeted very kindly by Belen, the receptionist, and immediately took an interest in the shop. I took a look at the the portfolios of each individual artist and was blown away by their skills. I was like I have to get a tattoo here. Belen was very helpful in deciding which tattoo artist was right for me. By the way great customer service, which is one of the main reasons of why i choose to get a tattoo here, Belen was very friendly and was easy to talk to. So here I am, going all out and getting my biggest tattoo, which is a sleeve utilizing the "hand poke" method by Taka. He is extremely gentle and considerate, it doesn't even hurt, rather tickles at certain areas of my arm, which he thinks I'm crazy for laughing, but then again it all depends on a persons tolerance to pain. I can honestly say I look forward to my saturday sessions with Taka, his unsmiling face makes him appear to be so serious and unapproachable, but he is so much fun and i have alot of laughs when I'm there. So don't let his unsmiling face scare you away. I enjoy my time there with Taka and I love my tattoo, the colors are so bold and vibrant I can't wait till he's done, I'm gonna have to get another one once he finishes this one. The hand poke method takes more time, but the results are beautiful. So if you're up for it, and don't mind the time I recommend getting the "hand poke" method by Taka you won't be disappointed. They had no record of my original consultation appointment after I waited 8 months for it, and when it was rescheduled for another 3 months later, the consultation was a waste of my time. The tattoo 'artist' didn't seem to have ANY input on my design or idea and I even had a couple books for reference. Basically he was too cool for school and was very unprofessional. Tattoos shops are still a BUSINESS and should operate as one and not waste people's time. I decided to go with Taka as he does the traditional hand poke method. Yesterday was my 11th session and we are now working on my second piece. He trained in Japan and spreads his love of ink & art here now. *Lucky us!* I had a vision for a backpiece and worked with Jakoh on its development. I sent him pictures and he did his own research in books for patterns and ideas. The concept and art came beautifully together thanks to him. I had about 5 sessions, 3/4 of my back covered, aaand he seamlessly covered my tramp stamp from when I was 18. (Ok mom, you win this one - the tramp stamp waaas a bad idea). I waited 4-5 months for my first consultation after being told it would be 6 months to year. I checked in after two months and they had lost my info so I guess I got in early by checking on the specific date of the consultation. I met with Jakoh about a conceptual piece for my back. It didn't go well from the start since I was 10 minutes late even though I called ahead to let him know. He was uncomfortable with doing an original design of a shogun demon, was inflexible about the amount of coverage the back piece would take even though he had similar examples of tattoos I liked. The discussion about color didn't good well either and again I found examples in his book of what I wanted and responded with, "Oh, I don't like that one", I want to do this... It wasn't a fit for me and him so I passed. This was just my experience. Good luck. read more

Everybody here is talented. I'm always on the lookout for good tattoo artists. It's permanent. You don't want some amateur to mess it up. Know a few people who consistently get their tattoos here. One of the best I've seen in terms of cleanliness and fineness (of the lines. No smearing or blunt tips), and design. These guys are ARTISTS. They're not just skilled in the act of tattooing (drawing lines on skin with a needle machine). They know what looks good, what kind of art will work and not work on particular body parts. They aren't cheap, but totally worth it. Tattoos are an investment. I had a nautical star done by Frankie. I forgot one of the rules of tattooing: don't drink the night before. Thins out your blood. Will make you bleed more. So I bled more than I normally do, and my tattoo ended up scabby, and there was no color in certain areas once it healed. I went in for a touch-up, and Frankie did it free of charge. Nice guys! HIGHLY recommend it. read more

I have been a client of Horitaka of Onizuka Tattoo for about two years. Horitaka is a genuinely nice person. He is a perfectionist and wants his work to be flawless. Horitaka uses the tebori or "hand poke" method of traditional Japanese tattooing. He is a member of the "Horitoshi" tattoo family and a product of the deshi (apprentice) training system. Horitaka specializes in traditional Japanese designs taken from Japanese history and mythology. He also strictly adheres to traditional irezumi design rules - in which certain animals, flowers, and design elements are matched together. I am very pleased with Horitaka's work. In my opinion, the depth and richness of color that is achieved by the tebori method is unmatched. Horitaka's colors look almost painted on the skin. And when the design is framed by dark "background" work, the colors are strikingly vibrant. If you are looking for truly traditional Japanese irezumi, Horitaka is the person to see. read more

So I've been wanting a tattoo for like 10 years and I could never make up my mind, finally this year I figured what I'm going to get, it was a kanji. I'm then thinking I need to find a place that will do a good job, I don't want my kanji to read "pussy" or something totally jacked up. (dude, you know it and I know it, people get some jacked up shit done.) I pulled out trusty yelp and bam "Onizuka Tattoo," then googled "jiro" and saw his artwork, I'm like tight, "that's the guy." Reasons why Jiro and Onizuka Tattoo is the place to go. - This place was clean, I scoped out other places near where I live out in the Torrance area and they're mostly janky. I so didn't want to be worked on where it either smells nasty or looks dirty. - Jiro knows his shit. Before getting my work done, I visited the place in advance and talked with him for like 15-20 minutes and he walked me through what would happen and everything. He was up front and was totally cool. (The other places I went to didn't even seem to give me the time of day) - His artwork is good. I'd have to say from all my research he's one of the best in Los Angeles. If you're looking for anything asian looking kanji, dragons, etc... Jiro's the guy to do it. (On a side note, when I was flipping through his work at his shop, I saw this crazy Sanrio character sleeve and it looked pretty awesome. If Jiro can make Sanrio look cool then you figure he can do pretty much anything.) I'm totally happy with my ink job, when I get my next one done I'm coming back. When I was looking to have my sleeves done up, I specifically wanted some Japanese style sleeves. I came across Jirotat.com after talking to Jiro on the phone and discussing prices and what not I headed out to LA to go meet up w/ him. Was sorta a journey finding the shop if your not to familiar with the area lol but Jiro was nice enough to stay on the phone w/ me for a while giving me directions. Upon entry of the shop, I had the pleasure of meeting Jakoh & Jiro. After seeing Jakoh's work in his book. We talked about what type of tattoo I wanted and all the little details. I been wanting to get a koi sleeve for the longest. So after discussing the idea of the tat I wanted w/ Jakoh, I left my deposit and came back a week later. Definitely was the longest week I had to wait, I was so stoked to get this ball rolling. Before this turns into a book, let me just sum up what I had done before you readers start falling asleep lol had Jakoh tat up my lower right sleeve first, I don't remember how many sessions it was but it took a good few to have it finish. No complaints here though, the sleeve came out perfect. There isn't a day that goes by that someone doesn't compliment me on the work that Jakoh did. Next I had my lower left sleeve (Geisha Girl). Its not finished yet but I'll be back to have it done by this year. So, if you are looking to have any work done I highly recommend you giving this place a call. Everyone is very knowledgeable and a master at their craft. You will walk away very satisfied. As of yesterday, I will go nowhere else for all future tattoos. I did a lot of google searching for a tattoo artist/shop that could do the Sumie/Asian/Brushstroke painting artwork that I was looking for. When I called for a consultation, I was told Jiro was completely booked until the end of summer. He says he has a lot of ongoing clients and can't take new ones at the moment. So I met with UG, the guest artist from Japan, and Jiro to talk about what I wanted. After talking it out with them, even though we didn't have a full design, I was confident that UG understood what I was looking for. He did the first piece (a plum blossom) yesterday. He started by detailing it with pen on my back which took an hour but seriously, it looked amazing, even with just a pen. I'll have to wait 6 months for him to come back for my next piece but I'm sure by then he'll have come up with a sick design for the rest of the pieces. It looks like there's a painting on my back, which is exactly what I was looking for. The shop itself has some amazing artwork in there. As I looked through all the artists' books, I was completely impressed with all the artists. All the guys I met at the shop are really cool and chill. I think I paid a great price for the end result. I don't mean to put this so generally because it deserves better words than what I'm about to give it..but this is the place to go if you want "Asian/Japanese/dragon/geisha/etc" tattoos.
