I regret not coming here earlier. Given that there are a dearth of good low-key bars in the area, I definitely found a good one in One Star, which definitely does not deserve a one-star rating. The place has the feel of a dive bar, but is easily nicer than most dive bars in Manhattan. Came here for late late night drinks, and it was one of the more fun times I've had in recent memory. It helped that we were properly sauced before arriving, but the general experience was just really awesome. We were able to get drinks very easily, see what sports were on TV, and just kinda jam out to the music. A lot of the drafts are about $6, which is better price for the area, and the rotating selection is decent. Their canned beers are even cheaper, and there are actually a pretty good selection of the canned beers as well. Also, I'm a fan of the tallboys they have available. Reminds of college (*sheds tear*). Their cocktail menu of the day is pretty funny, with a bunch of creative names, and apt descriptions and prices. Service was great and very quick. Bartenders were friendly, and their demeanor really matched the overall vibe of the place. I don't believe they serve food, but there are plenty of options nearby, and again, the prices are cheap enough to go pretty hard here, if that's your jam, hehe. Will definitely be back for happy hour drinks or again for late, late night drinks. A fun, cheap, dive-esque bar with a self-deprecating sense of humor located in Chelsea/Flatiron? No, you are not imagining things, you are at One Star. If you are looking for a no-BS watering hole to hang out with friends, enjoy some drinks, and not worry about being trendy or cool, this is the spot for you. My only complaint is that some patrons were totally abusing their "name nights" (a night when somebody with a particular name gets to drink for one dollar -- SUPER FUN) so they had to discontinue it for the time being. I hope that they will bring it back and that when they do, people will show up with friends, won't abuse the privilege, and won't ruin it for the rest of us. Here's to hoping! read more

Drinks were okay but what turned me off was that the bartender came over to me and my party asking why we didn't tip and basically if we were going to tip and that tipping after every drink was customary in the city. Bar isn't packed at all, was waiting here for ten minutes to be served and I tasted no alcohol in the drink. I thought I was supposed to tip based on service?? What a diamond in the rough. I swung by One Star on a Thursday evening when I had some time to kill in the area before my next meeting, and it started to drizzle outside. Yelp (ironically), led me to this place, and after seeing the name and glowing reviews, I had to try it out. One star is clearly a tongue-in-cheek reference to Yelp's influence on the food/drink scene, and I found it hilarious (to be clear, I love Yelp). The slogan on the front door? "Raters gonna rate". Love it. On to the actual bar though. I am happy to say that it exceeded all of my expectations. It was packed with locals unwinding after a work day, the type of vibe I love. However, I was able to snag a bar seat within about 5 minutes, and catch the friendly bartender's attention very quickly (which is always appreciated, time-to-service should be a standardized metric to evaluate crowded bars). They've got a decent selection of canned/draft beer, nothing too spectacular, for ~$5.00. Additionally, they sell pop-tarts (2 for $3) and Cheeze-its (1 bag for $1). I love pop-tarts (not ashamed), so this was fun for me. Your opinions may vary... The star of the show, however, is their $8 beer and whiskey shot special. That's an excellent deal anywhere, and unheard-of for a downtown NYC bar. I'm from Wisconsin, and that would be a decent deal even back home. Really incredible that they can do this. There is trivia Saturdays at 1930, per their (clever) website. I'm definitely going to have to check it out. If you're in the area, swing by! Prices in NYC are out of control, and it feels good to support an institution that's fighting for a more rational pricing structure in the food/drink scene. Super chill. Wasn't crowded on a Friday night. The bartender was dope. She hooked me up with a free drink---which was generous of her. I asked to sample the 'Founders Oatmeal stout' which sounded interesting but ultimately was not for me. She prepared me a sample and then suggested another beer based on the other two drinks that I had ordered. The recommendation she gave was spot on. I enjoyed the drink she suggested I sample. One Star has replaced my old haunt, No Idea Bar, where you would have no idea what happened the night before. While walking around the area one night, I remembered I had yet to visit One Star, and so we had to go. I was only there for one drink (a nice strong craft beer), and I was only in the front part of the bar, but I loved it. It's dark and smells new and they have great drink specials. It wasn't too crowded, and it wasn't too noisy. I was almost sad I had to leave so quickly (we had a show to get to), but I am really looking forward to my next visit here. read more

This place is a solid drink option in the area. I went on Monday night to meet a friend who was in town and staying in Midtown East for a quick drink post-work. Since I live on the far west side north of 96th street, I figured I'd choose something that was on the way home but still close enough for it not to be a trek cross town for my friend. Upon entering the bar was sparsely populated, it was relatively quiet for a divey joint, and it was pretty clean. All good things when you are looking for a spot to actually talk. The only reasons I wouldn't give this bar more stars is: I'm rarely in the area, and wouldn't go out of the way to come to this bar They don't have food (although they do have poptarts) which is basically sacrilege to me because I'm a hangry drunk. I couldn't believe it when we found this affordable bar in Manhattan. Not only is their $8 can of beer & a shot deal great, but they also have some fun snacks like pop tarts and cheez-its. When we went (on a Friday night, around 8 PM), it was the perfect amount of full--plenty of people for a good atmosphere, but not so busy that our group of 8 couldn't find a table. Eh. This place was okay. Prices were extremely fair for the Chelsea area (~$6-$7). I ordered a cherry cider and it was delicious. However, it's a very bare bones place. The entire space is painted black, which makes One Star seem devoid of character. There's plenty of seating at the bar and there's a back room with a pool table from what I can tell. Is it sacrilegious to give one star more than one star? This bar stays true to their namesake and mission and strives to give a great experience with minimal effort. The bar menu is very straightforward and one of the few places I've been to in New York that offers most drafts for $6 and less, as well as $5 cans. We plopped down at a table in the back and were undisturbed for over two hours. They have a few nitro pours on tap which was kinda cool; our British visitor appreciated the old speckled hen. The bathroom is kinda gross FYI, so make sure you do your business before heading over. I work in this neighborhood and there aren't many laid back, affordable bars in the area. Most of the bars are more upscale. One rainy Thursday after work, I found this bar randomly wandering. I really enjoy this bar. The atmosphere is clean but casual. The bar accommodates a lot of people and There is quite a lot of room. Its kinda narrow like a long narrow hallway but don't be discouraged if you have a large party go all the way towards the back. They have a more spacious seating area with tables. I really love this place.
