I fancy myself more of a painter than a gamer and I was impressed with the options for paint, brushes, and tools they had available. I didn't buy anything on my first visit, but my son and friends felt welcomed and were treated kindly, even as teenagers (typically, this has been a challenge). I'm looking to paint an army of space marines soon, so I'll be in to grab some washes and metallics. This place is nerd nirvana.

I have spent a ton of money on expensive full art or classic cards.... I would never shop here for Pokemon. My son got 1 card in pretty crap /well-played condition for about a dollar. I have been to plenty of hobby stores and never have seen cards organized the way they have it set up. No sleeves. Many cards in one binder slot. Service was odd we waiting for someone to get out of the bathroom for about 5 minutes before being helped.

Of course, now being a little bit more into the trading card community, this is not the way to treat people who don't understand the value of their items. Absolute scammers didn't even have any sealed product in stock. Felt like me coming into the store and being there literal only customer of the day was the employees biggest headache yet. I had cards to sell that were definitely worth more than a few bucks, but that was their offer, and they acted like they were doing me a favor by even talking to me. I was considering it though, because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of Ebay, until one of the store employees caught my eye. He told me on the sly that he sells his cards at Fast Food Anime near Mitsuwa because their offers are a lot better. When your own employees take their business elsewhere, it tells you all you need to know, y'know?

For a chess player (as I am), this is the coolest shop.  The friendly and laid back owners are the…read morehusband and wife team of Tom and Marguerite Paravola.  There aren't a lot of brick and mortar chess shops like this in the entire country and they have been at it here in Elmhurst for 20+ years.  It was a total blast to look, feel, and touch the various chess pieces and sets.  I ended up buying a magnetic wooden chess set and it was worth it to me to see and touch what I was buying.  Yes, you can buy sets via online shopping, but like clothes, I want to know what I'm really getting.  Yes, there is a modest premium for that but well worth it given the multitude of available choices.  Besides, while browsing, you get to chat it up with Tom who is a chess lover, and that's worth something too!  While browsing, I particularly liked the look and feel of some heavy metal pieces made in Italy, and I've never touched pieces that sturdy and heavy, and maybe one day I'll splurge the $400 for such a set of chess pieces.  They have limited hours as Tom actually still works another job!  Yet, he still has time to also run a free weekly Tuesday night casual chess meetup night in the neighborhood and all are welcome.  Keep it up, best wishes, and thank you!
