I attended a group work luncheon here with reservations. The turnaround time from order to eating was impressive. I had an upgraded house salad before my blackened chicken Alfredo. The salad was fresh, and the blackened chicken was good. The Alfredo itself was average and a small portion. The service was excellent, even with a large group. A 20% automatic gratuity is charged for parties of 5 or more. There is flattop and bar seating. There are many menu choices, including a vast cocktail menu. If you are a beer drinker you're probably fine here. But if you drink wine, you will likely get cheated on your pour. I have paid extra for the last time for an 8 ounce pour which clearly is not even close to 8 ounces, in spite of the bartender insisting it was. I bought a wine glass from the place on the way out, just to double check. I went home and poured myself an 8 ounce glass of water. It wasn't even close to what the bartender poured me. I had a disappointing experience with Taryn at One North. Throughout my visit, there was a noticeable lack of attentiveness--long waits for basic assistance and little effort to check in or ensure things were going smoothly. It felt like guest service was not a priority, which made the overall experience frustrating and unwelcoming. Customer service plays a big role in whether someone wants to return, and unfortunately, this interaction fell short. I'm a musician and I play all over coast to coast and around the world. I love good food and I don't really expect it at most of the bars that I play at. I ordered the jambalaya today, and it was the best that I've ever had in my life. Not even kidding. I'm no connoisseur, and I'm not from Louisiana or something, but I am a foodie and a good cook, and this was done right. This job actually pays about half of what I normally make when I play, but the quality of the food is a big plus and next time the agent asks if I want to play there, I'm going to say yes, so I can eat the jambalaya! read more

In town for a conference. A large group of us went here for dinner. Think 40ish people, all on separate checks. We were placed in the gathering room which had plenty of space. The waitress did a phenomenal job waiting on us. I give her kudos for keeping it all straight. The food was good. I had the pizza, which was yummy. The food my table mates ordered looked just as yummy. The prices were reasonable. I'd definitely come back. read more

We recently were in town for my brother in laws graduation from Michigan State and he decided to have his graduation dinner here. They were great in having the space setup for us and when we arrived early, they were able to accommodate us coming in with no problem. The waiter was very personable, and our table wasn't that big. Unfortunately, either due to the kitchen, the bar, or the waiter our visit was relatively stilted. Meals came out in a couple waves which was understandable but some errors were pointed out in meals and drinks that took a while to get corrected and some were bad enough there was almost no point of bringing them. For a day where they should have been on top of their game it was a disappointing experience, especially after our last one. read more

What an amazing place for so many reasons!! 1. I called on Thursday to get reservations for 17 on Friday! The young lady who answered the phone was amazing. She gave me the store mangers email to email for reservations and told me she would let him know I was emailing! She was so helpful! 2. Emailed Mike who was quick to respond and so very accommodating! 3. Arrived at a super cool, spacious, lively place with live music and tables full of people laughing and enjoying life! I knew I picked the right place! 4. Our waitress was AMAZING! She was organized, polite, checked on us often and just all around a great waitress! 5. The menu choices were awesome. I am pretty sure we all got a little bit of something. From the Michigan Salad to the Beer Cheese burger everything was great! Every order was correct and the food came out so fast! 6. Beer choices galore! I asked the waitress to bring me something hoppy and delicious. I can't remember what she brought but it was exactly what I wanted. I can not recommended this place enough. The world lacks good customer service but this place does not. I am not sure how they are doing it but every employee working tonight (Friday May 9th) smiled at us and greeted us. We had reservations for Easter Brunch at 2:30. (Only time available). Nothing was hot or even warm that should have been. Steak was dry and so tough I couldn't cut it. No au juice. Bourbon salmon was dry and hard. Chicken looked sickly grey. Mashed potatoes were lumpy and cold. Everything looked unappetizing. Salad area was almost empty. Dessert bar offered many items that were prepackaged and nothing homemade. No breads, no butter, prepackaged bagels. According to the advertising we were expecting an outstanding buffet. This was disappointing to say the least. I realize it was later in the day but that is no excuse given how much they were charging and I had no choice in the time offered. The manager offered us 50% off our bill. It should have been free. We won't be back. read more

One North at the E. Lansing location is fairly new. I'll partially excuse their deficiencies on this and difficulty, I assume, finding enough staff. We were there with a large group, scheduled in advance. The service was as slow as a restaurant in France(lol). They had a decent selection of draft beers, which I appreciated. The server was very good but obviously overextended. Why did they accept a group of 80 people if they didn't have the wait-staff? Was everyone home sick? Here's my main issue. Though each of us paid for ourself, 1-N automatically added a 20% tip. Such a charge is justifiable if the bill was paid as a unit, but if each person paid individually, it was really not a group charge. Isn't a gratuity a bonus to the server for good and prompt service? Ambience: quite a bit of background noise. Probably unavoidable. But in this time of bitchy people, I still wish 1-N well in it's journey. read more

This is an address I know well, but with a new owner and menu I'm less familiar with. One North Kitchen & Bar opened in December 2020 at the site of the former Reno's West. I've spent many evenings and game days at Reno's locations across the region, and while they were known for being great places to grab a pitcher or a Long Island iced tea and enjoy a round of pool or an MSU game, One North's menu brings another level of excitement. Featured on YouTube's "America's Best Restaurants Roadshow," I was both eager to taste from the "scratch kitchen" and curious about how the new franchise would reinvigorate the space. Classic pub fare is joined on the menu by entrees with Tuscan or Southern flair. One North is neither pretentious nor overly relaxed, both in terms of culinary options and atmosphere. It's made good use of the massive footprint, and while you're never far from the sightline of a TV, the modern décor, patio seating options and absence of video games from the Reno's days provide a chicer vibe. What's hit or miss Given my current domestic circumstances, my first visit was to pick up a takeout order. I placed my order through One North's website rather than a third party, hoping to maximize the revenue going back to the restaurant. When I arrived, the hostess couldn't find my order in the system, but after a few moments, the manager found it and had the kitchen start it immediately. Staff shared their apologies, and after another few minutes, my order was ready. Glitches happen, and the courteous response was appropriate. On my second visit, my daughters and I deferred a school shopping trip until after brunch ($5.95-$19.95). The extensive buffet offerings of hearty breakfast staples and New American lunch items were reinforced by the incredible array of antipasti and fruit and a well-stocked salad bar. A tower of parfaits was surrounded by donuts, pies and other assorted desserts. The ups and downs started in the breakfast area, where the cheesy eggs and Southern fried chicken tenders & waffles were a high point, but the cheesy potatoes with peppers and onions were home-fry-style, even though the ladle on the outside suggested an earlier version in the morning had shredded potatoes. I was also frustrated by my time spent foraging through the woefully undercooked bacon, searching for an edible slice -- and I've eaten many a European breakfast where medium-rare bacon is common. Most disappointing, though, was the lack of attentiveness by the waitstaff as I waited more than 10 minutes for both of the cranberry juices I ordered, even though the bar was but one table away from us. What's good The takeout dinner was better. I ordered the Brussels sprouts ($12), and while they're not the best in town, I found them to be nicely charred, and both the Parmesan and bacon were tasty. They just needed a bit more balsamic. I really enjoyed the torpedo shrimp ($13.75), a creamier take on sweet chili or boom-boom shrimp. Paired with a delectable Asian slaw, I would order these again. The Michigan salad with blue cheese ($8.25/half, $12.50/full) was also a hit, from the dreamy balsamic dressing to local cherries and apple slices that sang the best of Pure Michigan. Best bite The pulled pork sandwich ($14.50) was on point. Slow-roasted pork was joined by pepper jack cheese, pickles, house-made barbecue sauce and a crunchy, creamy coleslaw. We've been to this restaurant a couple of times and the food was pretty good -- most recently in November. I'm not sure what happened between November and March but today was not good. They were out of GF buns. They were out of steak. They were out of Michigan beer. I ordered a salad with salmon and no walnuts due to a nut allergy. Not only did the salad come with nuts, but there was barely any greens and those that were on the plate were yellow. The romaine was rusty. I didn't get a replacement salad until everyone was done eating. The food was cold. I'm wondering if Sundays is a bad day for them? Short on staff, short on food, long wait times. Brunch or dinner this place has a a huge menu. Which may be a blessing and a curse. Sometimes they execute it extremely well with dishes hot fresh and exactly as you would want other times you're walking through the breakfast buffet and feeling like no love was put into it. This place is a good American food option on a weeknight. It's quiet and clean. The food was good, not the best, not the worst, just solid and reliable. The service is okay, we do tend to have to flag our server down if we need things, like refills or sauces. Gets loud if there's a game. A little pricy for the quality of the food and they upcharge for every sauce. The mocktails are good, the espresso martini is super gross... the worst one I've ever had. Not a bad option but not my first pick. Honey mustard chicken sando is my favorite thing on the menu. read more

This restaurant was a pleasant little discovery on our way through Lansing. It's mostly burgers and sandwiches and salads, which was fine by us because we were just looking for a familiar meal in a sit-down joint. Patty melts were on the menu, so I had to get one of those. The patty melt was one of the best I've had! The bread was smeared with garlic butter and nicely toasted, and it had grilled onions on it that melted with each bite. Sandwiches come with your choice of side, and I chose fries because I had not eaten in more than 16 hours and I was starving. The fries are seasoned. We also got the pulled pork sandwich, which wasn't served on a typical hamburger bun, but on toasted bread. It was very good, too. My kids both got cheeseburgers from the kids menu, and the fries that came with the kids menu were not seasoned, thank goodness. (Because you know how kids are about that type of thing.) The service was very quick and the people who work there were very attentive. They were busy when we visited on a Saturday, but everyone was hustling and doing it with a smile. read more

All of a sudden, some girl (employee) came and started changing both tvs in front of us without asking if we were watching the game. Which we obviously were. She had no clue how to operate the remotes. Girl copped an attitude once us and another party grumbled about the girl fumbling around with the tvs that we were obviously sitting front and center watching the gamem Pizza was terrible. Bobli pizza from the freezer would have been better. Bartender (Kara) asked how the pizza was, to which we replied, "Not that good." She then, said rather rudely, "Well, different people have different taste." No kidding, but it's fsurky difficult to mess up a pizza. Tasted as if it came from a freezer. Not reql pizza, no fresh ingredients - pay $18 for a frozen pizza. Mgr was nice yet shpuld allow all employees to taste the food to give recommendations other than " I've heard our pizza is good." From who? A 5 year old? I've managed bars, restaurants and worked in hospitality. Not sure if this is how Lansing people react to honest feedback or they need stronger training since they rely heavily on tips. There were some nice servers or food runners, whole other's need to work on making guests feel welcomed, anticipate needs, having common sense or being nice sine they are in the service industry. The girl with the attitude was very rude and should learn how to operate the tvs before trying to figure it out during business hours while people are sitting at the bar watching the games. We had a group gathering on Sunday morning at 11:00. Our reservation was for 35 people for a birthday party in the back room. We called at 10:00 am to confirm our reservation for 35 and were told everything was set for us. As we arrived it became quickly apparent that we were short eight places. The wait staff took care of it after a bit of confusion. There were a couple of rows of tables at the other end of the room, but we were told they were for a 12:30 party. As I was going to the buffet, the staff station nearest our room had three staff standing there. The man behind the station said loudly in a disgusted tone, "What are THEY complaining about?" One of the girls said, "They don't have enough tables for their group." The guy just said "Oh." That should never be something a customer should hear. While we were eating, different waitstaff came to collect our dinnerware and said they needed to get as much of it as possible, because they were running out of forks and needed to wash some for other diners. We were only given one waiter for 35 people! She was absolutely amazing under the circumstances and did an outstanding job. We all felt bad for her as she was running full speed for an hour and a half for us. All this said, the buffet was outstanding and was much more than we imagined it would be. We will return to dine, but won't reserve for large parties. They were clearly understaffed and not able to deliver for a large gathering. I really love this place. It's a little on the pricey side but the atmosphere is fantastic. I really enjoy the outdoor seating with the comfortable couch chairs and fancy fire pit on a late summer evening. The food has always been solid even if it is a little expensive for what you get. I have been here around 6 times now and the service was excellent every time. That must mean they have very good management and hire people that take pride in their work. Ruined our Mother's day Lunch... We are long time patrons of this location. We have always had great service and loved the food and drinks. We have a large family and have made multiple reservations here as they always accommodate our large group with dietary restrictions. Given the great history it was an obvious choice for Mother's day. I called 2 weeks before and was told to email the manager to make a reservation. So I did. The manager responded with a single sentence reply saying they could do that. I replied with our special requests for the children in our family and my phone number. I called 2 days before Mother's day to confirm our party number and time. NOT ONCE was I told about the special buffet that would be happening until 5pm for Mother's day. When we arrived and checked in they didn't mention the buffet. There was no sign, no posting on the website, no communication. We saw the buffet and had to ask if it was buffet only. When we were finally told this we had to make a special request to speak to a manager just to make sure our vegetarian and vegan family members would be able to eat something. 15 minutes after our reservation time they sat us at a table where part of our group had to sit separately. The buffet food was fine and there was a good selection. We were never told the price until we explicitly asked for it which was $39.99 per person... for a lunch buffet. Having been told this information after we already started eating we were forced to finish our lunch. If we had known this price beforehand we would have chosen a different lunch location from the get go. We were told the buffet went until 5pm. At 3:30 it was obvious they either ran out or chose to stop stocking the buffet. They stopped putting the peel and eat shrimp, all desserts, all charcuterie and all the toppings. The hot food wasn't rotated or covered. This left a very sour taste in our mouth for this location. This was a huge bummer because even with all of this the server still did a great job and they did end up accommodating our dietary restrictions with ordering off menu. read more
