I want to do this place justice but I have to be honest with myself... Ok, 3.5 stars? Can we do…read morethat :-) This place is a located on main street Dalkey and is yet another great store stocking all the goodness of healthy food options with allergy friendly products. This place for me though is a little confusing, I dunno, they have a little bit of everything without a lot of one thing. Let me try explain this... Their Deli counter offers pre-selected combinations for you to choose from however whats on their deli selection is very limited, there is not a great amount of options making it not overly exciting to 'create your own' sandwich or roll... Considering there are other Deli options in the village, this is a little disappointing because what they do lay on, it super nice but need to go that extra step with their meat and salad options. They specialise in pre-prepared and frozen meals all high end organic ingredients with portion sizes for the lone diner or family, with add on like potato gratin, etc however for me, they have a few regular meals and they stick to them, not a lot of variety so if I'm thinking of grabbing last minute dinner, this place doesn't jump to mind cause there's just not enough variety being mixed into their meals. When I said earlier about a little bit of everything, like they a few relish/sauces in stock but might be just one flavour so again, when I'm sitting at home saying I need a sauce this place just never gets a look in. However... Let me also just spend some time on what I do REALLY like about this place! What I think is cool is during summertime I've seen them advertise in their window island picnic deals, so you can buy your sandwich and drink or maybe pick up some pastries, meat selections, etc and have them all packed to take with you on a tour to Dalkey Island so yeah, that is a drawing point and great marketing particularly in high tourist season. They have a hot drink and pastries option which is a nice treat to take with me on coastal walk and settle down somewhere along the coast and enjoy :-) They are always super friendly in here, they connect really well with customers and I know they do catering for private functions which I imagine they do really well with.

After exploring the Powerscourt Waterfall, we came here to grab some food. There was a wide…read moreselection of pastries and lunch items. We ordered the fisherman's pie and a carrot cake. The fisherman's pie comes with potato or salad; we chose the potato. The fisherman's pie was fresh and tasted good. The carrot cake was not moist and soft like how I was used to, so I didn't particularly enjoy it. There are tables inside and outside. Since it was a beautiful day, we sat outside. Lots of locals and bicyclists stopped by the cafe. The staff were very friendly and the cafe is located next to a few shops, so definitely walk around the town as well if you have time.

Fresh raspberry jam! I've had my fair share of raspberry jam touring the magical emerald isle the last couple of weeks, and this one I can taste its high quality and no additional unnecessary additives or preservatives. Fresh scones and croissants and the baked potato was yum. I enjoyed my oat latte. Nice to see Ireland using Califia oat milk which is my favorite. Service was friendly and efficient. Ample seating indoors and outdoor seating to enjoy a beautiful garden. Free strong WiFi available too! Has modern English (American) music playing in the background which was nice. Would be nicer if they threw in some Irish traditional music ;). Will go down as one of my favorites or the favorite to visit in Ireland. I really enjoyed Ursa Minor in Ballycastle in Northern Ireland. Thanks a million for a lovely experience, Poppies!

Under a leaden sky I passed the fast food joints and some place called Harry's Cafe Bar. That place looked nice but it was still closed. Thanks for no breakfast, Harry! Further up I found Poppies which was open and welcoming. I felt good in there with the smell of fresh coffee and all sorts warm food. A few guests were already sipping hot beverages. After a short look at the menu I knew what I wanted: Pancakes! I love a huge stack of thick pancakes with lots of syrup. I fell in love with them when I lived in the States. It's the most comfortable food when it's cold outside, when you are having breakfast alone and a long empty day ahead of you. The waitress was friendly and the service very quick. But the disappointment was beyond measure. Instead of a huge stack of pancakes I was served a big empty plate with two lonely doughy triangles (for a price of a huge stack). Poking at them with my fork showed that they were already dry on the edges. I drowned them in the maple syrup and washed them down with some mediocre tea bag Sencha. My breakfast took less than 10 minutes. I pulled my hoody back over my head and went out hungry to face the day. I guess I am as responsible for my disappointment as I am for my expectations. So I still give Poppies 3 stars for the warm atmosphere and the friendly staff. And for being open at all. The pancakes would deserve 1 star and the tea 2. Also makes 3.

I blame fallon & byrne or Donnybrook Fair for starting the trend but I'm probably being unfair. Truth be told most of these places have been around for a long time - I just couldn't afford them (now that I think of it that bit hasn't changed much either), one such example of 'new to Q' but well established shop is Thomas's, a shop with the most amazing selection of foods, wines, fresh veg, breads, cakes, sweets and a deli counter. I am a sucker for those millionaires' squares - you know the ones with a shortcake base, caramel and a chocolate top? You see them everywhere and usually I buy them and end up dumping most of it because they are something easy to get wrong. True to form when I spotted the square in the cake section in Thomas's I ordered one, went back to the car and broke off a corner as I drove. I nearly crashed the car in an attempt to cram the rest into my mouth, spectacular.... If everything else in the shop is like that bit of heaven then my waste line is a thing of the past...
