i am a mother of two littles brought in a ton of amazing items in excellent condition some were absolutely new but I got a low ball offer twice from the ladies working there when I brought a baby tub they mixed up the production year with actual patent date year which are completely two different things basically calling me a lier saying this tub was bought in 2009 when it was purchased inn2024 I had to return to the shop to explain that they made a mistake and even pulled up all of the receipts showing when exactly this item was purchased and it was May 20 2024!! but they continued trying to find reasons why now they can't take it then said because logo sticker was removed from inside the tub they can't take it I was like but this is used items store all of the stuff there is used of course I'm not going to have a logo paper sticker glued to the inside of the tub where the new born baby be sitting what in a world!?! then they started literally trying to find whatever reason they could saying there was a microscopic little dot looking like a tiny peace of dirt on fabric - I explained even if there was a microscopic dust on it is because I had literally had to take this bath back and forth from my cars trunk and there was a stroller there so could pick some little dust from there that can be easily removed than they started talking about residue from the sticker needing to be cleaned off whole thing got to the point of absolute nonsense! at the end they ended up able to take it but they offered $3.19 for a $45 bath tub that is baby to toddler convertible with seat insert and everything this is absolute insult to a customer I was nothing but nice to you all of this time till you hinted that I'm a lier and that tub from 2009! brand new tub, whitest brand new plastic from 2009 can you imagine this nonsense ugh I have been disappointed to say the least you could have offered me 15 bucks I'd say it was fair deal knowing you want to make money on it but 3 dollars is insane you are going to make sooooo much profit on my items I already roughy you that you low balled me on and you couldn't be fair on a tub?? I go back into the store, and they said the clothes smell of smoke. Umm how? They were in my son's dresser drawers. 10:30 AM on 12/17/24 I have been shopping here for years, this location specifically. While their selection is typically adequate and customer service is fair, today's experience was awful enough to warrant a negative review. I was checking out and purchased a large toy and some clothes. I also had two buckets of clothing that needed to be returned to my car. The nice younger cashier offered to help me with carrying it to my car, as I also had my infant in tow. Another woman who works there, likely middle aged with brunette hair, gauges and a nose ring, stopped the girl in her tracks and started whispering to her. I asked what that was about, and she told me that the other employee cannot leave the store while on the clock. The younger girl was only helping me, a paying customer, take my purchased items to my car. I asked why, because at other locations (North VA Beach and Greenbrier- same franchise owner of OUAC) employees have been extremely kind in offering to help me to my car before when I very clearly had my hands full. She then loudly asked, and I quote, "Who, the old lady that works there?" I'm assuming she meant the owner, who I've met and spoken with many times in pleasant conversation. I said "No, a number of the younger employees that work there." I'm a big spender at this store, and often go out with multiple bags and my daughter in tow. This lady didn't want to hear any part of my previous experiences with kind OUAC employees and refused to let the younger employee help me to my car. Another customer saw what happened and she dropped what she was doing to try and help me when I came back in for the second round. The rude employee raised her voice at the offer from the other customer, insisting it's a "liability to leave the store." I told her I did not believe that, as employees have offered to help me on a number of occasions, not to mention that it is a matter of being kind rather than rude. She then said she'd be calling the others stores to complain. Even if what she is saying is true, I think she could have gone about it a better, kinder way. Her tone, volume, and words were rude enough so that it put off the younger girl employee and the other customer. Then to get hateful with employees of other OUAC locations over the phone because they are kind, hmm. Some people are just plain mean. I don't believe someone like this should be working in a children's store. read more

I have been coming here for years. I don't come often, maybe a couple times a year. In the most recent visit, I came on Presidents day in the morning to sell my kids clothes and also to buy my kids clothes. It was about 11am and there were only two employees working. The store was pretty busy especially with the 20% off Presidents Day sale. The employees had to stop often to check out customers. I could tell they prioritized the paying customers. I had waited patiently and they kept apologizing for the length of my wait time. Finally I had to leave the store and get my kids so I asked them to put my items on hold which they did. When I returned I was able to check out the items I had put on hold and receive the funds for the items they purchased from me. They has purchased about 80% of the clothes I brought and offered me a fair amount. Overall, I had a great experience. They offered great customer service, a great selection of kids clothes, books and toys. The store is also very clean and organized. Everything is reasonably priced. I really enjoy selling and shopping here. read more

I've sold here dozens of times and 99% of the time they buy some portion of what I've sold. No one has ever been rude to be here. They have a good selection of clothes for kids and babies. So I think their selection is excellent, they do have some quality stuff. But I have been in on 3 separate occasions and have yet to interact with someone that isn't completely rude and dismissive. Every question I ask is met with mostly 1-word, curt answers and the staff makes me feel stupid for not knowing specifics of what and how they buy. I'm not sure what is going on with employee morale here but it seems like everyone there needs a vacation or a different job. Kinda very disappointed. I brought some clothes and only took 90% because the other 10% didn't meet their requirements. I was fine, once I started to review the clothes I picked from THEIR racks I find 3 items that didn't meet also their requirements (a dress with a hole on it, another dress with dirt on the collar, pants with stain). Do not waste your time going there. Thrift stores have a better deal. The staff is trained to treat you poorly. I've been a customer for three years. Today I drove 8 miles with a bunch of clothes to sell. I have always brought the items in a suitcase. I spent my day washing and even ironing a few items. When I got there they said they couldn't accept the clothes because they were in a suitcase. I can understand that the policy might have changed but I would expect empathy. I used to be a good customer and have always sold items that way. I would expect at least that they could check the clothes and advised that next time they wouldn't take it if the clothes were in a suitcase. This of one of the bad stories I have about this store. I personally love this store and location! The location is right by a target and home goods which is to your advantage of you plan to sell to them and don't wanna wait in store or leave the site while waiting. I love how organized the store is . I love that they organize clothes by style but also by color which makes it wayy more appealing to the eye and easier to accomplish a productive shopping trip . The variety alongside the condition of the items to choose from is what keeps me coming back. I have bought from and sold to this location since 2017 and nothing has changed in those years . I find there to be consistent pricing so I know what to expect when shopping which I really like . The only time a price will be a bit more than you expect is when it's a higher end name brand . Bought my items into the store with the hope that they would take 25% of the items I bought in because of previous replies. I chose drop-off and they quoted me about 2 hours. All of the clothing were washed, folded and paired up if it was a two piece outfit and placed in a wide laundry basket. I showed up at the quoted time and was helped right away. And, I was very pleasantly surprised that they had bought about 80% of what I bought in. I walked out with almost $100 and plan on consigning with this in the future. Hoping this helps others who are planning on bringing in their gently used baby clothes: I use unscented or lavender gentle detergent and most of the clothing that they bought from me were from Gap, Carter's, Tea Collection, Nordstrom brands and Polo, Ralph Lauren. I had a lot of Burt's Bees baby items rejected and realized that they didn't actually wear so well. I don't blame them for not accepting all brands or for being selective. Absolutely horrid experience. When I first learned of these places I was so excited that Moms could save SOME money by selling their gently used clothes. So I took a laundry basket FULL of NB-6 months, with at least 10 outfits that were brand new with tags and many that had maybe been worn once. The owner went through my cloths and gave a good amount back (I found out later in the day she split a lot of my sets up!! Who does that?! I can't resell a bunch of damn pants!!) they offered me $37 and change . As I prepared to chock it up to a learning experience while the owner kept apologizing for her completely lowball offer on my daughters clothes, I purchased about 6 outfits from there...ready for it....for $47!!!! So basically you I gave you a tote of clothes, bought 6 outfits and still had to spend $10!!! I will NEVER sell my clothes to this lady's business ever again. I am right now trying Rock-A-Bye Baby for my leftovers, which is how I learned you separated a bunch of my sets...probably to pay me less since they were onsies. Way to go lady, your store isn't helpful whatsoever. Right now I'm just resisting the urge to go pay you $37 and get my clothes back! Oh! Well, color me a dumbass because up until today, I thought Once Upon a Child was a daycare facility... I was driving around VB, aimlessly, in search of a specific something for my son and after trolling through all the other baby stores I could find, I stumbled upon this place on my way home. Let me just say, I stand corrected, because, it is the furthest thing from daycare. Its a consignment store, filled with everything from strollers to boppys to rollerskates to toys to hair ribbon to aisles and aisles of gently used clothing, all ranging from size NB to kids. It was like walking into discount heaven for my child, I was very impressed! In fact, I asked one of the employees if they carried what I was looking for and she was more than willing to start digging. Right on! BEST OF ALL, They had it. For TWO DOLLARS, which would normally be around $30, so naturally I jumped and squealed! I love a good bargain! After I found what I was looking for I browsed the rest of the shop just out of curiosity. The employees there were all working diligently to hang and arrange all the new items that were recently brought in, the store was clean and all of the items there, looked good as new. They pay cash for anything they deem good enough to put on the shelves, so I will certainly be bringing things here that are no longer being used. So happy I came across Once Upon a Child. In general not too bad. They are very picky about which clothes they take- good for buying, not for selling. They had a huge variety but unfortunately when I was there I didn't find much I for my newborn boy (nicer clothes or beach type). They have a great girls section with bows & tutus. Based on all the negative reviews, I felt it imperative I write about my experience! I had bins of clothes that I need to get rid of. All were in excellent condition and before selling at a garage sale or donating, I really did want to try to make a little something back. The important thing when consigning, is to call the store and ask their policies. I called ahead of time, asked how to bring the items in, what they were currently in need of, and anything they wished I didn't bring. I washed everything, laid them all flat in clear bins, and took them in. I had my drivers license in hand and filled out the intake form. I was greeted immediately upon entering the store. The employees were kind, expedient, and knowledgeable. I went in twice in two days and both days they offered to read me their buying policy. I noticed this consistency with all clients as they entered. I felt like what I was offered was fair and the reasoning clear cut. I was told 30 minute wait time if I waited in store. My time was a little longer, as I had several bins and I knew it would take some time. Not an issue. Upon completion, they offered for me to pull my car up so I could load and offered to have an employee help me load everything. I went in for an interview the manager was 30mins late she did not apologize and was rude. I know this is 2017 but I had a bad vibe when I walked in the store even the cashier was rude as well this was at the once upon store at Upton. I will never shop there and let my friends and family know that this place appears to be prejudice. For example when I walked through the door I was not greeted however when a white person came in just seconds later they were greeted. It is extremely sad how racism still exist! read more

I went back a second time, just to ensure I didn't go here on an off day (every place and person has one now and then,) but unless they're having an off year, this place could use an improvement. The first time I went I dropped off some clothes to be sold. I was asked if I would be staying in the store or not. I didn't realize this made a difference as to when they would be viewing my items, so I told them I'd be leaving the store, but asked if they offered a texting service to notify me when my clothes were ready because I would be in the immediate area. There is a Home Goods next door that I needed to shop at and could kill some time there. Yes, they would text me and it would probably be around 45 minutes. I noticed a woman behind me in line who also was selling some items and I heard her say she would be waiting in the store. An hour and a half later after a trip to Pungo for strawberries and a walk through Home Goods, I still had not received a text. I parked in the parking lot to feed my 3 month old and saw the same woman who had been in line behind me leaving with her things. I thought surely, my stuff must be ready if she was behind me in line and is leaving! Maybe they forgot to text me! When I inquired about my items I was told it was going to be another hour or so and that they would text me. I let the employee know that I lived across town and made a special trip out here for this, even arrived early, close to the time they opened as I have a 3 month old and it is hard for me to be away from home for long. He apologized but let me know it would still be a wait. I asked if I could just leave the items to be reviewed and come back in the morning for them as I really needed to get back home and I was told they could not do that. It was very frustrating, but I just chalked it up to a mistake, took my items and I left. I gave it a few weeks and I went back. This time when they asked me if I'd be staying in the store I said yes and asked if they would still text me. 20 minutes later after I looked through their items, they texted me. I was shocked at what they didn't take, things that had never been worn that they said had too much wear on it. Compared to what was on the racks, they made a mistake. That's not even the point though. What I'm upset about is their order of reviewing items. It should be first come, first serve. I shouldn't have to shop in your store for you to look at my items in a timely manner. read more

I have been to the Virginia Beach store several times and I have heard of the employee's being rude and nasty to customers but I had never experienced it myself until today. There is an obese Caucasian male who works there and he is very condescending when he speaks to customers which is so unnecessary. Today, I came in with a tote which is the same size of the totes that they store their shoes in to sell and in my tote were mainly winter coats and church dresses that my daughter had grown out of. Well, I was told that the clothes that weren't bought are clothes that are out of style, had marks on them or needed more "love!" Out of style? I purchased these same dresses from THIS store and as we all know, children grow quickly so how out of style could they possibly be? The worst part is that they told me that they wouldn't accept my child's clothing because of stains but I had two dresses in my cart that were stained that I had planned on buying.....from their store! When I notified them of the stains, they stated that it was an "oversight!" So, the scuffed shoes in the tote in the back of the store on the shelf was an oversight as well? The Caucasian male stated that they accept thousands of items and oversights may happen often but they would mark the scuffed and stained items down to a dollar. Seriously? Perhaps, you should take them off the shelf and off the rack completely since your employees are picking and choosing what they can accept and from whom they will accept the items from. Since, I now know that the Virginia Beach and the Chesapeake store is owned by the same woman, I will not patronize either store from today on. Even the employees can't explain why they won't accept the items. When I asked the employee who "looked" at the items why the items in the tote weren't accepted, she kept telling me about the items that they would take and how much money I would get back. Ma'am, I am asking you a valid question about the items that weren't accepted. I can clearly read how much money I will be getting back. I used to love coming to this store when my daughter was smaller but my experiences have changed my opinion about this store and it's sad but it shows that they don't care......you are just a number to them. read more

I'd like to take the time to share my HORRIBLE experience I had today. This place doesn't even deserve the one star that was required for me to leave this review. I regularly sell/buy at this store and all of my past experiences have been wonderful (great prices, clean store, friendly, and helpful staff). This afternoon I came in to sell my son's preemie clothes that he no longer needed and to possibly purchase some new things. When I was standing in line I overheard the couple in front me say they were there purchasing some preemie clothes for 3 babies in the NICU (being a former preemie/NICU mom I know the struggle of trying to find preemie clothes & their selection here is extremely disappointing I must say) so when I went up to the register to pay for the items I was going to buy I kindly asked the owner (Which I KNOW for a fact was her just by reading other reviews about her being nasty with other people) if I could possibly get some of my items back that were going to be sold to the store so I could give them to this couple next to me that needed them and this woman literally started raising her voice in a totally unnecessary and disrespectful manner telling me that I cannot do that in her store and then aggressively went and got my bag of things and set them on the counter in front of me. She claimed she is trying to run a business LOL honey that is not the way to do it ! It's safe to say i will never be shopping at this store again but I am looking forward to visiting the Chesapeake location in the near future and hopefully I will have a better experience. I like shopping here but the owner and the buy back policy are ridiculous. I had quite a few brand new/like new items they didn't buy-which is fine. But I did talk to the owner so I knew why they were not purchased. She claimed in size 0-3m they buy sets. Well that's funny bc "sets" are rare to find in the store. Leggings with a white heart outline print-won't buy bc printed. So I asked about the solid pants I had -she just shrugged. I asked about Onesies and she said that's more of a shirt bc it has a button on it ---umm it snapped at the bottom It's a onesie. I went into the store to sell some of my sons preemie pjs that were worn at most twice and are Carter's brand. I waited for my clothes to get appraised, walked around the store in search of pants for my infant newborn son, soon to discover they wanted $8.50 for a pair of pants, which are gently used. Before, I could look anymore she called me to come hear what I was going to get in cash...$6.00 which was $1.20 a piece for 5 items. I was appalled especially when the owner told me they try to fair in their prices. My reaction was not when they charge $8.50 for gently used. Is once upon a child great if you need cash, probably but I walked out and I would give my business to another consignment shop, which I did and got way more than $1.20 a piece. After I spent hours cleaning, inspecting, and sanitizing 4 bins of clothes and a exersaucer, swing, and 2 baby gyms, they would only take a handful of items and none of the large items. What a waste of time and gas going all the way out there. I understand them being picky but these items were used by children. Just walked out the door. Came in to trade in our baby swing and pack n play and stood behind two people being helped in front of us. One of them who walked in right before us. It was 3:15 when we walked in. After watching no less than three employees standing around doing nothing and one of them even looming at me and doing nothing, I was told by tue employee who helped the woman in front of me (that walked in seconds before me) that they would t take any of my items because they stop taking items after 3. Standing there with a swing and two toddlers and my husband goes to get the other item out of the car- can't be bothered to tell me that when I had the extra hands to leave? And what about the two women you were helping in front of me? One of them got a thank you with money in hand, and the other I overheard the daughter talking about what they do and do not take or pay for. Tue employee then LIED to me and told me that woman was just picking up stuff when I saw the transaction being made in front of my eyes. I didn't buy anything from here I just sold baby gear here and wow they are picky. The excersaucer I brought in looks brand new. There was one spot on the fabric seat like a water/juice stain. And they told me wash the seat and if it comes out bring it back. Really the excersaucers that they had looked more worn then mine so I found that a bit odd. Also if you come for a quote mid-day be prepared for them to tell you it'll be two hours before they can give you quote. So come when first open or right before they close. I have shopped here various times and experience inconsistencies in customer service. If the owner is absent the customer service is poor. When I am supporting your establishment its in your best interest to be respectful. I shouldn't have to wait several minutes for you to finish what you are doing on the weekend conversation for you to ring up my items or answer my question. This is not my first time witnessing this. * However, if the owner is there customer service is prompt and friendly. It is enjoyable shopping experience.* The store has a great selection of everything you could possibly need for a child. I appreciate managements high standards of consigned items. Kuddos to the staff for their efforts in maintaining clean store with great merchandise. One of the reasons why I shop here is because they are so careful what they accept. Okay, so these places are always hit or mess. I don't think I've ever seen someone say they were thrilled with their experience at any of these consignment type places. With that being said... I've sold things here twice and both times got more than I expected. I figured I'd bring a 30 gallon tote in with stuff and be offered $15. Not so. I wasn't making a car payment outta the deal, but received a fair enough amount back for my sells. I've heard nightmare stories from others, so I am not sure what the problem is. If you're like me who has a mother constantly buying fancy, expensive Nordstrom type clothes that never get worn, maybe that's why my pay outs have been solid since they are still NWT. Shopping there is kinda hit or miss. The good thing, I never leave feeling anywhere near broke. I don't think I've ever spent more than $20...and gotten a lot for it. A lot of things are well worn and faded. Some brands are ones I'm not interested in. We've gotten a couple of super cute pieces there that I love for my daughter to wear. If I was looking for a specific outfit for a special occasion, I wouldn't probably advise going here for something that important. Now, for the bad part. This last time I went to bring stuff to sell, I came in shortly after the store opened. I signed in and was told it would be 30 minutes. Perfect. Enough time for me to peruse the store a bit. An hour later, I'm annoyed but don't want to be dramatic, so I go stand by the checkout area just twiddling my fingers. Girl doing my stuff is a lead or something and keeps stopping to help this person with that and receive someone else who wants to sell and then another couple who come in with a toddler bed they decide they can't take. Then back to my stuff. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER...I get my offer and my cash and run. I was LIVID. I really didn't want to make a scene and get nasty with a young girl who probably really doesn't care anyway, but it was hard not to. I understand wages are probably low, the job is annoying, people are annoying, etc., but you can still work retail and be a nice, happy personable individual. So, for that last experience, I won't sell here again. From now on, all my stuff will go to donation and someone will be very lucky to get our duds. read more
