I have been coming here quite a lot lately, always forget to check in because I have my hands full going in and going out. The selection is great, I can honestly lose hours just browsing for hobby related stuff in here and if they don't have it, they are quick to get it in for you. The service is incredible to be honest. Everyone who works on the floor is all about helping you and sharing your passion for whatever hobby it is you are into, better watch out because you may pick a new hobby or two after talking to some of the people on the floor. The lady at the register though... she is a totally different story and it is sad because the is most of the time the first and the last person you interact with. She may greet you as you come in but only because she may hear the door open, she won't take her eyes off her phone l. E V E R Y single time I've been to the store she is typing and typing away on her phone... few times she is just busy chit chatting with her friends who come and hang out by the register. When checking out, she will respond to txts in the middle of the transaction and every time just seems to be inconvenienced by the fact she has to check you out. Sad. I have made a comment to her every time I check out but that's how much she cares that she still does it. Going back to the positive, everyone on the floor is just incredibly helpful but Thomas takes the cake !! No joke, Thomas, thank you so much... every single time you have helped me way above and beyond!! You have not once tried to upsell me and even when I have tried to just buy the "upgraded" version or something he talks sense into me and makes me realize it is not what I need or that in the long run will cause me more issues. While some may think he should upsell me, doing what he does is what keeps me coming back and keeps me happy. The value value for what he does is incredible and way more valuable than just upselling once. read more

Great shop, super nice and helpful staff. I called this shop out of the blue to see if they could help after my son broke a part on a small robot kit, since I don't have a soldering iron at home. The robot kit was not even purchased at this shop, but they were happy to help solder a piece back together. It's clear they know why they are doing at this shop, and this minor repair was a breeze for them. They did the repair for free but I happily purchased a few small items to give this place my business. Even if you're not ready for RC toys, there's a nice selection of puzzles, LEGO and other building kits, and other small toys. Will definitely be back to support this shop. read more

As soon as I walked in with my daughter I asked for bottle rocket fuses. (I am 70 and that is what I grew up calling them) the lady with glasses decided to argue with me on what they are called and told me it's model rockets and had a condescending tone the entire time. I asked if they had just the fuse and she told me it comes in the box with the MODEL rocket. She kept going back and fourth with me on this and finally walked two feet over and threw a fuse for a rocket at me and my daughter. Then while I'm talking she picked up the phone without even saying excuse me I need to take this. As I was leaving I told her she could be a little nicer and she yelled at me to have a good day in the rudest tone I have ever hear in my 70 years of life. I was expecting a lot more, but unfortunately I will not be recommending this company. read more

Bought a traxxas rc truck for my son for Christmas. Bought an extra battery too. Except the battery didn't fit. They only sell batteries for the old style traxxas rc cars. When I returned the battery they told me to check back in a week or two and they will have it solved. I went back today and the guy seemed annoyed I wanted to buy a battery that actually connects to the rc car I purchased from them. His solution " buy a different charger"! Seriously???? They sell dozens of traxxas rc models but NO batteries to fit them! I usually like to support brick and mortar stores, but these guys just lost me.... read more

I am really pleased with the staff, their stock, and their sincere desire to help me out. I came in with a quadcopter I had bought on amazon. A couple rotors weren't working because the little motors had quit. Cheap Chinese stuff on Amazon: you get what you pay for. The young man at the counter was eager to help and he showed me how to disassemble the arm and get the motor out. They had a motor that we were fairly sure would be compatible. It's worth mentioning that one of the managers was rather blunt and admonished the employee who was helping me. I think she didn't want the guy messing with my device, lest he make a mistake and then I expect some restitution. it was a bit rude to stand 6 feet from me, tell the young man not to help me where I can plainly hear the conversation, and not address me as the customer and politely explain what you are and are not willing to do to help me. This also doesn't serve as helpful training if she thinks the young employee is going to make a mistake, because all she told him was what NOT to do in that situation, not what TO do. I give them 5 stars in the end, despite the manager's overabundance of caution, because the motor worked great. And thanks to the young man's help, I was able to take it from there, make my own repair using their parts, and salvage my copter. My copter from on Amazon, was $70. Hobbytown sells a very similar one for $99. Now that I have seen both, I understand the quality difference between the cheap Chinese one I got on Amazon and the quality ones they sell at Hobbytown (whose parts are highly likely also Chinese, but are higher quality and backed by the store's expertise). If I lived in the area and knew about Hobbytown, that price difference would have been well worth the quality difference. read more

I've always wanted a remote car and my husband saw this place. He told me that they had good stuff there. As soon as I walked in, I was so happy to see the remote cars there. I wanted to learn how to put them together and build them..customize etc. I didn't know why to look for and what to pick...so I asked an employee there and he seemed bothered that I asked. I picked out one vehicle not knowing that they all had different capabilities...but that's why I asked a question. The first thing he said was "are you mechanically inclined?" Pause..."not to be rude" he says. I get it, I'm a female and there is that stereotype. The whole time he was condescending and it made me feel like this is a hobby maybe I shouldn't do. He looked at me and was like explaining the 2WD and 4WD condescending like and meanwhile..I'm just like I have a 4WD actual truck...so I think that I know what that is. When my husband came along, he just spoke to my husband. After this encounter, I didn't really want to buy anything. Another employee came by and he just spoke to my husband about building the vehicle. Even though I was the customer. The one who wanted to learn this and make it a hobby. A part of me wishes that I never bought anything from there. Based on the guys who work in that section of the store...Not every women wants to just bake or whatever stereotypical crap there is. I've been coming to Hobbytown for years and it really has never changed that much. I always feel I know what I am going to get, which I good, but they never surprise me with cool new items. They have a good assortment of small games and puzzles (although I think they are too expensive) and kites too. Probably the most kite you can find since the kite store at waterside went I out of business many year ago. They have plent of r/c cars and planes, but sadly I am only looking for r/c one meter sailboats and have never found a good one there. read more

There's this hilarious book called Undateable (http://www.undateable.com/). I think it's a show on VH1 now too. Anyway, it's all about the ultra-wrong things guys do that make them "undateable"--everything from mullets and wife-beaters to owning a cat (think about it). I think working at Hobbytown should probably be added to list. The dudes that work there, well, they like hobby stuff--model airplanes and cars and figures and all of that stuff (can you tell I'm not one of them?) All this leads me to the fact that my husband IS one of them. He doesn't have to be dateable, he's married. Sad but true. For the longest time he wanted one of those remote control helicopters, so I finally got him one as a birthday gift from Hobbytown. He played with it incessantly. Until the battery started crapping out. He got a new battery and it started crapping out, so they gave him a whole new helicopter - no charge. Pretty cool. They also flew his helicopter around the store to check out the problem. I am kind of falling asleep writing about this but my point is they have good customer service. And they like hobby stuff. Nice place. Went in there today due to some free time. Large assortment or RC cars and trucks. Great section of model planes and armor. Car section for models was small compared to what I'm used to. Found what I was looking for. Unfortunately I heard a salesperson talking about a bad credit card sale very loudly on the phone. The other associate was criticizing another associate about certain details of the models. I think there's a better place than the showroom floor for those type of discussions. Perhaps the office. Definitely will go back. Just won't use my credit card. read more

Well I posted on Facebook after 5 messages back and forth they blocked and deleted my post i guess they didn't want people to read what i had to say. I ask you please read this before you go there for anything. They said they gave me free posts and help on a note ready to fly plane. Why would you need parts and major adjustments on a ready to fly plane. This is what happened to me. I went to the va beach store to buy a ready to fly plane. I liked at 3 did some research. Came back the next day to buy the apprentice s 15e bind and fly. I took my controller spectrum dx6i in the store with me. The tech said it would not work with that plane. So he upsold me 50.00 more to the ready to fly version. Got it home went to assemble it it was missing screw for front landing great. I called the store they said come in we will give you one. So I did. Got home started assembling it again and when I attached front landing gear servo was in neutral the rudder was straight but landing gear was hard left turn. I called the manufacturer they said detective landing gear. They said they would send me one. I said no I just bought it yesterday I'll call the store. At that time I asked about my dx6i the manufacturer said yes that would work with the bond fly I originally was going to get that I was told by the store assistant said would not work. So I called the store explained what I found out. They said bring it in we'll fix it. So this is my 4th trip out there. I said I just want to exchange it for the bind and fly one. The associated that said mine would not work sent a pic of my box to owner. In the mean time the associat took a dremel grind on the landing gear screw. screws. He then took the cleavage to the rudder and turned it out no lie 15 to 20 turns. The wheel and rudder are straight but the servo it no where close to being in neutral . I told him it's a ready to fly and what he just did was bs. He said no it happens all the time. Do the manager finally calls I talk to him. He said since the box was scuffed from me assembling the plane on it on my side walk he would not exchange it. Even after I explained to him all I just did for you. I told him what I thought of his customer relationship he could care less. His word was final. I got home called manufacture again told then all that happened. They David there's no way that should have to of had been done. The recorded conversations and I have the reffrrance number. All I want is the original bind and fly and my 50.00 back. I've called corporate as well. 5 trips 5 hours and a plane I still can't fly I'm not happy at all to say the least. Hate to do it but a review is my next step. To me this did even be worth a day of small claims for being miss leading and the defective parts. I have my own business this is bad business Thank for your time. read more

One day I came about 10 minutes before closing and after picking up the items was told the cash register is closed and he can't ring me up. Told me to leave even though the train section is within whisper distance from the register and he could have simply told me prior to me even going there that it was closed. read more

This is a fun hobby store. From trains, planes and rc cars they have all your basic needs. They also have just about everything you could need for modeling or treasure hunting or rocketing. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable but not pushy. This is just a cool store to stop into on a rainy day to kill some time or find a fun new hobby. read more

If you're going to get a part make sure you know what it looks like or they make mistakenly give you the wrong one. If you want someone knowledgeable in nitro they right person has to be there so you can't just go there randomly. They won't let you work on your RC car there or won't do something that may only take 15 minutes like changing the plugs on a battery. I basically only go there for parts. If you want people that are knowledgeable about everything and are always there go to Debbie's RC World. read more

Very poor service you could really tell the employees and the store manager were out to sell me high price items instead of the gift item I intended to buy. And dont even think about returning an item. I had a small rip in the plastic that covered the model car and they would not return or even give store credit because of the small plastic tear in the box. Do not buy from Hobby Town VA. BEACH! SEAN The manager is extremely rude and very uninformed about the products he is selling and all to willing to sell you things you don't need or will not work for your model. some decent rc's but make sure they have regular replacement pars and accessories for them. buyer beware do not buy any drones without doing research online! the staff is not very informed about known problem's that will cost you $$$$ in repairs! the staff should inform you about known issues with certain rc's instead of sales! if you need support horrizon hobby is who you have to contact and you will wait on the average for over an hour just to tell you most the times to send it in to them! here is a list off brands to stay away from if you want to enjoy your rc experience. 95% of horizon hobby line here are just a few. spektrum, eflite, blade (especially any quadcopter), parrot (junk to much $ for what they offer) and losi. these for sure. here are some good brands. traxxas, hpi, futaba, castle creations, tekkin. trust me do the research and watch youtube. i hope they get their act together. i really enjoy going to a local store even though i know i can buy it online for cheaper. read more
