I'm surprised I've not reviewed On The Rocks before, though I've only been one or two other times and perhaps that was whilst on a Yelp hiatus. There are some shops I love and will always stop at, no matter what city I am in--and that's this sort of gem shop. I'm not kidding when I say that I search for fair trade, crystal, or similar terms when I'm traveling anywhere. I am addicted to sterling gemstone jewelry and have been for many years because my hometown had a store that was wonderful for this and helped me build my collection. On The Rocks has lovely sparkly things that are all too tempting! My most recent stop was to see if I could find something with rubies that I liked to commemorate my daughter's birth and I found a cute pair of small earrings that I snapped up. They have earrings, rings, bracelets, cut stones and crystals, and so on. Lots of things for a rock hound or a jewelry fiend to salivate over. They're a little expensive. But it's not a place you buy things every day and they have beautiful inventory so I'm sure to stop in again. The door has steps to get in but they said they have a ramp for wheelchair users to get in, and though they weren't super enthusiastic by offering it as I tried to drag my stroller in but you may as well ask for that if you'd like. read more

My go-to place for crystals. I usually find what I'm looking for, all at reasonable prices. I don't feel like they're price gouging, as I've seen with some online places that charge double for the same (or similiar) item. There's a great selection of tumbled rocks, palm stones, points, and of course the showstoppers - the gigantic specimens in the windows are especially stunning. The employees are really knowledgeable about the pieces, and very helpful if you're trying to make a decision. They also have more items in the back, and if what you want isn't out on the shelves, they'll go and check to see what else is available. On the Rocks has an Etsy shop too, but I think it's best to go there in person. read more

Checked this out over the weekend and was astounded with my visit. They have a huge display of crystals that would rival a rock museum. The specimens are amply labeled with their identification and location of origin. The display are also neatly labeled with pricing. I love that the ID cards as so non-descript and straight-forward. You know you're not paying for the price of a fancy card. They have wide selections (or maybe I came at a great weekend). I recently started my crystal collection and I was stoked as I left the store with a hefty bag of pretty selections. I will be coming back for sure. read more

This is my go to place for gems, minerals and crystals in Chicago. There is a good selection for the size of the store, and the inventory shifts just enough to provide a nice balance of some constants and some special finds. It can be hands-on but there are also specimens in display cases, and they are happy to show you anything you wish, or weigh things as you shop. There is something here for every price range, but every item has the same degree of dignity, if that makes sense. Nothing here feels "cheap," everything feels that it could be special/significant to a buyer. I like that. The staff has always treated me with respect, and I enjoy being able to talk about minerals, gems and crystals with other people who share my enthusiasm for them. I visit a few times a year and always enjoy the experience. read more

My family and I came came back last Saturday. Very nice shop, great customer service. We purchased over $115 in gems and rocks. Very nice items but a little more expensive. Overall, its a very nice place with some great items. I'll be back, that's for sure. read more

This is now the fourth rock shop I'm aware of in the Chicago area. They all have their pros and cons...and this one may have just a few more pros. The staff is super friendly. The shop is small and quaint with a good selection of specimen stones, tumbled, rough, and crystals. They had stones in many price ranges and I thought there prices were a bit more reasonable than some of the other stones. They have a decent amount of product out that can be carefully touched and explored. There is also material behind glass that you will need to ask to see, but the prices are mostly displayed along with a tag with the name of the stone. They have a nice assortment of artisan jewelry as well. This store is easy to browse and everything is displayed nicely. I'm so happy with the five tumbled stone I bought and I'm looking forward to coming back. read more

ANTI-MASKERS ALERT! I'm stunned by the Covid-19 safety procedures that are not being followed here, especially 4 days before Christmas when people will be visiting their families en masse. Contrary to what is stated on the door about face masks being required, both the blonde-haired man working behind the desk, the man working in the back of the shop, AND other patrons in the shop were not wearing masks. If you care about your safety and about not transmitting Covid-19 to your friends and family, especially now that virus cases are skyrocketing, I wouldn't recommend going into this store. read more

I don't know much about stones or crystals but this bracelet is beautiful. I bought it for my niece who is into them. The staff was really nice and helpful. I popped in this weekend looking for jewelry to wear during Zoom meetings. (Aghhhh). Anyway, I arrived promptly at 11:00 am just when the young man was opening the door. He chatted me up, asked me what I was looking for and explained the 'meaning' of some of the gems. Happily I was able to purchase some good pieces. (Sorry my pictures aren't that great, but trust me these pieces are beautiful!). The young man (we talked so much I forgot to ask him his name) told me that they also polish the stones and I could come back anytime and get my jewelry polished. This business does not follow mask guidelines. The shop workers do not wear masks and do not require customers to wear masks. I went in last week looking for something cool to add to my collection. Once I realized the owners and operators couldn't care less about peoples safety and well-being, I left without supporting their business. Prices are alright but you might as well go to Dave's in Evanston, where they do actually mask. Prices are comparable too. read more

I called into this shop looking for some sage which they did have. When I walked into the store I was blown away by how nice and organized everything is! The two workers really know about the products they're selling. I really like this spot. There are clear signs that say when you can't touch certain products which is understandable. I took about 15 minutes at one section of the store deciding which crystals/rocks I wanted to purchase. Everything is fairly priced. I picked Mexican obsidian, red jasper, and clear quartz. All of those products plus the sage and a little mesh bag came out to less than $10! I went to the nearest natural body of water, which was Foster Avenue Beach, to cleanse the crystals with water & sage. Be careful when doing this because the first wave washed away my clear quartz. My friend took me here because she loves different rocks and their jewelry. I have never been to a store like this and I love it! I really like how they have neatly organized the rocks and have little print outs of what they mean and their healing/energy properties. I was able to get a few $3 hematite rings that were really pretty and would be great holiday gifts. The employees are very helpful and knowledgable about the different stones. A great shop with a variety of stone. I've purchased several times from this store. My 3 star rating is based on the poor interaction I had with the gentleman at the counter. My partner and I entered ready to purchase a gift for a friend's birthday. I approached the man at the counter and asked if he could guide us. We wanted to purchase stones that had certain energies to gift a friend and tell a story. He blatantly said, "Well I don't know your friend. I'm more of a collector." I said we were hoping to find stones that presented prosperity and creativity, which he quickly had an answer for. There is this type of info displayed on stones throughout the store, we were just looking for guidance. He clearly knew what I was asking for but was abrasive and rude about it. I love to go to Gem & Mineral shows, and this place embodied all the great aspects of those things -- variety, quality, unusual stock -- without the crowds and drafty auditorium setting. This little store on Clark had a great array of fossils, minerals, crystals, and such, as well as a big wall of stone beads, lots of unique jewelry, some dichroic glass (paperweights and vases), a few pieces of raku pottery...there's really something for everyone. Signs were up for Reiki and Reflexology as well, hinting at a New Age bent, but it's not a "patchouli and Grateful Dead"-drenched atmosphere in the least. I could easily do my holiday shopping here and take care of everyone on my list, even my finicky father (he loves minerals and fossils). On the Rocks is right on target; I'll be back. read more

I first started coming to On The Rocks at the beginning of summer and I LOVE this store, I stop by almost every week. I was very new to the world of crystals and stones but I have learned a lot just by coming to the store. One of my favorite things about On The Rocks, is by every display of stones is a description of the stones metaphysics, which is very helpful and interesting. The stones and crystals themselves are gorgeous, if I could buy all of them I would. The variety of raw and tumbled stones is excellent too. Actually, the variety of the store in general is awesome, jewelry, incense, stones, tarot readings, and more. I always look forward to chatting with the staff, they really know their stuff and are friendly and peaceful. The manager, Micheal, is incredibly helpful and sweet. He is more than happy to answer any questions. And a really cool dude. Great staff, great stones, great place. Michael, the store manager, was an incredible help to my friend and me this evening. The atmosphere was peculiarly calm withOUT an over-powering incense that some stores have. It was closing time, but Michael kept the store open long past the official closing time (about an hour past) to answer our questions and mindfully and joyfully guide us to our crystals/stones. I happily purchased a small salt lamp with a candle holder and some stones. Michael is a walking, talking dictionary of metaphysics...literally. His demeanor was so peaceful and his information quite bountiful. Even though it had been a long day, and his family was waiting patiently and sweetly to go home, he continued to educate my friend and me by answering every off-the-wall question we had. I highly recommend this place for purchases of stones, crystals, sage, salt lamps and more. There is a true peace with which Michael walks and it is quite helpful when you, the patron, are trying to determine which crystal will best fit to your needs. In my 20s I would have been on this place like flies on rice. I used to love any shop that embodied a sort of hippy vibe. In my 30s well, not so much. I will happily say that the vibe is welcoming and there are beautiful things to look at wherever your eyes may wander. To start with, the hanging lotus lights. I loved them and want one, specifically an orange one. It would be perfect in my office. I want it right now, however, that is not going to happen, but I do know a cool place where I can look at it! They also have beautiful stones scattered around, some elegant pieces of handcrafted jewelry and striking art work. I realize that many people use these amazing pieces of crystal in their practices. I really know nothing about that, but WOW, some of these rocks are BEAUTIFUL to look at! Refractive, reflective and all around colorful. They make you itch to pick them up and hold them! I was entranced by pieces of beautifully cut smoky quartz. They would be awesome on a silver chain. My friend whom I was shopping with informed me that the smoky quartz would help keep me earth bound. Nice to know. I also know what I am picking up when I am done with my vacation! I went for a visit with my girlfriend during my vacation in Chicago. Both being into crystals and gemstones, we didn't quite know what to expect given some mixed reviews. We have visited various crystal stores in Europe and the west coast of America. This one definitely had a good vibe to it, nice friendly, helpful people and a good selection of gems, jewelry (general and of local artists), tarot decks and books. Pricing is average, I wouldn't say expensive. We're used to paying more in Cali, but we tend to pay a bit less in Europe. We ended up buying a good amount of crystals for a fair price. I have been an avid gem/mineral collector for years now and checked this shop out while I was working in the neighborhood one afternoon. The shop itself is great, with kind/helpful staff and beautiful specimens! However the high quality gems and minerals were a bit over priced. Also, I could definitely suggest the staff do away with some of the very cheesey hippy gear. But I suppose this is a trend with that scene and it probably attracts young stoners to buy "heady" gear ;) I would come again, but most likely would not buy the high quality specimens I seek due to some over pricing of gems/minerals. read more

After riding the 22 bus for what felt like three years, I was so excited to finally arrive at this... gem! of a store near Clark and Hollywood. The shop had great energy, I spent nearly an hour poking around and holding every stone in the place and didn't feel rushed or like I was in the way. I'm new to the crystal game but had done my research beforehand. I was pleased to find they had everything that I was looking for, in addition to some pieces I thought may have been harder to find. Prices were fair in my opinion. Many of the stones are offered in pocket sizes, so it seems any price point could be accommodated.
