I had their vegan sandwich option, the Bolton, which is on sourdough and includes pickled beets and avocado. I thought it was reasonably priced but I would say it's good-not-great. The sandwich wasn't cut fully down the middle, the layers were too thick, and the sourdough was much closer to a typical white bread than a fresh sourdough. It had no tang or crunch. It was fine for the sandwich--I just don't think it tasted like sourdough! I didn't try the coffee or baked goods but both looked pretty mediocre. I didn't see the baristas weighing espresso before pulling shots which shows me that drink quality probably varies widely from drink to drink. The inside and outside are cute. I ordered my food through DoorDash and when I received it, it was still warm which I appreciated it. The bacon is thick cut and salty, just how I like it. That made the sandwich even better because the bacon was thick cut and not the regular bacon others serve. The croissant was soft and flaky and I appreciate how the cheese was melted to perfection. I really enjoyed my sandwich and would order it again. The hash browns unfortunately were not seasoned at all. Very bland! I had to add salt and pepper, reheat it and then add ketchup. I have been here 5 or 6 times, and every time I think "ugh why do I keep coming here". Why do I? Because it is one of the only cafes in the neighborhood and there is always space to work, which is nice. I like the vibes inside, the natural light, the tables are comfortable and cozy. But I am always always disappointed with the food, and sometimes the service. That sucks, because it could be such a great place! The things I don't like: I really wish they would have another protein option for breakfast sandwiches, like a turkey bacon or impossible sausage. The chorizo is genuinely just soooo bad. I have ordered it in a breakfast sandwich twice, and it is so wet and sloppy it soaks into the bread and makes it inedible. It also just doesn't taste good, like it tastes like nothing but also like bad. Adding another protein option veggie or turkey would make the breakfast sandwiches good, because the bagels and cheese and egg are usually good. I like the scrambled egg. Since I hated the chorizo so much, I started getting avocado to beef up the sandwiches. But tell me why they put massive fat slices of avocado on the sandwich like half an inch thick, no salt and pepper, and when I have ordered that both times they put the avocado heavy on one side and the sandwich came out a sloppy mess again. Whatever, that is fine it isn't that big of a deal. What bothers me is that it is sooooo expensive like a chicken caesar salad and an iced tea is over $20. And I can understand really good quality grilled chicken breast and homemade dressing being that expensive but it is about the same quality as a Panera salad. It just doesn't feel worth it. The espresso drinks are weak, the tea is good. Now my least favorite thing, unfortunately, and usually I truly don't mind because I have worked in a cafe before and I get it, but almost every time I have come in I have had to listen to this barista complain about her job and how busy it is and what people are ordering and just be overall negative and annoyed and it literally makes me feel bad for ordering food and patronizing the place. Like I get it, but save that for when it is quiet and you have time to talk sh*t with your coworkers. Not when I am standing there waiting to order. I feel like I am supposed to apologize for being there like "Hey first of all I am so so so sorry for imposing I know it is so annoying I shouldn't even be here ugh I suck, but if it is okay with you like if you don't mind do you think maybe I could possibly have a latte? No worries if not seriously again I am soooo sorry I am such a burden but maybe a small coffee with honey?" and I don't like that. And it's even better than the great and fast service and the cool aesthetic! I thought I was coming for waffles but I didn't see them on the menu (my bad). I chose to try this local business and was NOT disappointed. I ordered the loaded hash browns and drank a cup of coffee. I should have taken pictures but it was well worth the cost and wait. It did not have salt and pepper as I saw in a previous review, but it tasted perfectly ok to me with the bacon and other ingredients. Some people like to season their own food and I'm glad they chose not to add extra seasoning. I'll have to try more items. read more

I've worked at MICA for 15 years and have always loved On the Hill! In fact when I first started, I would go almost everyday and then realized that wasn't healthy for my budget. I had the tacos Asada with steak and they were delicious! Meat was flavorful and juicy. Only thing is that there were so many juices that by the time I got to my second and third taco, the tortilla had fallen apart. On the Hill closed during the pandemic and re-opened a few weeks ago with a brand new look and menu (it's now a full-Latinx menu). I have to say that I miss the personal touch and being able to talk with the workers; everything is now electronic/computer but it's also limited with custom options. I ate there today and my coworker doesn't like avocado, made a note in her order, but it wasn't followed and still got avocado. I just hope their able to move the needle to be a little more personable and customer-oriented. read more

On the Hill (OTH) was my 'go to' spot for many years (nearly a decade). I could always count on this spot to provide delicious treats/ meals, without fail. Once the pandemic hit, things changed drastically. They shut down for quite some time. Then reopened as a Latin 'to go' eatery. That didn't last long. They shut back down and stayed down for a while. Now OTH is back. The menu has been pared down quite a bit and some of my fave offerings are no longer available. That aside, I'm still loyal so I decided to try the... Everything Bagel & Lox: Toasted Everything Bagel, Cream Cheese, Tomato, Bermuda Onion, Cucumber. Capers. This preparation came chock full of delicious ingredients. The onion used was red onion and not Bermuda... but aside from that, the bagel was stacked nicely. I was excited to destroy this once I got to my destination. Once unwrapped and I took my 1st bite, I couldn't bite all the way thru the bagel. I thought it was a 'fluke' so I tried a different area. NOPE! The ENTIRE bagel was inedible. The inside was soft like dough and the crust (top/bottom) was hard as a rock. Not even crispy pretzel hard but ROCK HARD. Evidently, this bagel is stale and/freezer burned. I couldn't bite through. I tried scraping the toppings and it was incredibly messy. I ended up dropping pieces and just got frustrated. As u can see in the pics, the entire bagel is till there, petrified for the earth to never be able to breakdown. What a shame. What a waste. What a disappointment. And what makes matters worse, is I can't even contact them. They have no working phone. I don't understand how such a formerly well oiled machine has missed the mark on so many levels. read more

They cannot keep up with their morning rush. I heard customers saying they got the text telling them to come pick up their food and then when they arrived their food wasn't ready. My food was so late that I had to leave it there and go to work for fear of being late. No refund, nothing- just told them not to make my latte so someone else could get their order sooner. I don't know if they just aren't telling the owner that they are understaffed but they are. There were 5 tickets waiting on the espresso machine and 8 ppl in the lobby trying to order with no cashier. I was walked to this location on a cool March day by a friend who lived in the area. He asked if I was in the mood for coffee... and I'm ALWAYS in the mood for coffee. He mentioned that there is a corner cafe he wanted me to try. He did warn me that it was very tight inside so we may need to order to then walk around, which was fine. We enter to a completely crowded cafe, which was a plus to me. That shows interest and positive vibes for the company. People want to be there. So, I order a double espresso and my friend ordered a dirty chai latte. No food. Double Espresso = $3.50. Not bad. It was a little small though. Big bang though for your buck. Dirty Chai Latte = $3.75. We were pleased with our quick coffee pitstop on our walk. If I'm back in the area and craving some local roast, I'll be sure to stop in. The food is good for the most part. I spend a lot of money here. It's a convenient place to grab a sandwich for my son when we don't pack a lunch. I order online, he runs in and grabs his lunch. Every Christmas I buy several gift cards for the teachers because the school is across the street. But today my 13 year old attempted to go in and ask for a cup of water and was denied entry. Rightfully so, because they do have a rule about the school children entering unaccompanied. Moments after, however, two other students entered and received royal treatment, given ice water. My son told me this so I went into inquire what the motivation was behind the disparate treatment. I was told that it was because my son obeyed the rules and did not even get to finish asking for water. But the other two were rewarded for their rule breaking and probably for just you know, being. So yeah. These are tough times and I'm whittling down my spending and becoming overall more organized and conscientious of my spending. I do realize this may not necessarily be the shop's culture, but your narrow minded employee, who chose to treat two equally situated human beings differently based on what only he knows, did you in. I found this restaurant on YELP. Ordered through YELP and got a refund through YELP or whatever ordering system they have. ONE STAR because not only is the restaurant CLOSED CLOSED, THEY STILL TOOK MY ORDER, TOOK MY MONEY, GAVE ME A PICKUP TIME AND NOBODY CONTACTED ME ABOUT ANYTHING. So of course when I pull up to the location I am confused to as why there's a closed sign on the door, the chairs are turned upside down on the tables and no one is inside. I call customer support and they refund my money, but of course it is going to take 3 to 7 business days to return. Someone had to except the order and start the process for me to get any of those notifications. They could've easily cancelled the order without me having to go through this process of waiting to get my money back when they knew they had been closed for a while now. read more

My friend wanted us to try this place because she had a really good burger her one time, lol. Let me tell you - delicious! I had probably one of the smooth lattes I've ever had. It was very good and felt like floating on a cloud. I also had probably the best burrito I've ever had. I got a Pork Carnitas Rutter Burrito. I never get burritos anywhere, but I decided to try something different. The pork was more towards the center of the burrito, so I didn't get to it for a few bites, but the rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, and cheese were a treat all on their own. Literally the best burrito I've ever had. I've never looked forward to a burrito in my life. But this one I had dreams about after I finished it. So much flavor! I don't know if it was the guacamole or the rice, but it was soooooo good. I could have had a veggie burrito and it would have been just as good. My friend and I shared a raspberry donut. I usually don't like donuts from your local chain and I prefer cake donuts because they're usually made fresh and haven't been sitting around for hours. I also prefer not to have artificial flavoring in my donuts. This raspberry donut was just right. Not greasy, no artificial flavor, just a good, authentic, raspberry donut. It was so good! I got a pomegranate iced tea, as well, I think. Uneventful. Good taste. Maybe I was too busy fawning over the latte. The place is pretty small, but I like the window seating, and I enjoyed the music. Staff was really nice, the girl who made my latte ensured I got the size I was looking for, and she even helped a lady fine a nearby restaurant she was looking for. I work nearby, and I've picked up lunch from On the Hill twice since they reopened! I've enjoyed both meals. The menu covers some different regions of Latin/South America: tacos and chilaquiles from Mexico, arepas and cachapas from Venezuela! You can choose from tacos, burritos, cachapas, arepas, quesadillas, and bowls. They also offer several proteins, including some vegan and vegetarian options (grilled soy curls and scrambled eggs). I've tried the chilaquiles bowl and the la curra salad bowl (with their grilled chicken - guajillo chile marinated chicken thighs) and enjoyed both. I've ordered from the Toast app both times, and my food has always been ready on time. I like the cafe overall. I'll definitely be back from time to time! read more

Stopped here for breakfast twice while staying in the neighborhood. Having a dog, we were unable to both go inside so we ordered to go. The inside was very cute, tastefully decorated with only a few small tables. The staff was all very friendly. The spot was surprisingly busy for a week day mid-morning but the line moved quickly. I got a flat white with oat milk, my friend a cafe au lait. Both of these were tasty and immediately available. For food we ordered a spinach, egg and cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread as well as a breakfast burrito. The remainder of the menu, including the lunch section looked quite delicious but we didn't have the opportunity to try anything. The wait for the food was exorbitant and there was no place to stand that wasn't crowding a patron at one of the few tables in the restaurant. Coffee was gone by the time the food made it out. My breakfast burrito was OK, the cheese was unevenly distributed, and it wasn't wrapped tightly enough to prevent significant juice dripping. The spinach sandwich was also OK, the spinach flavor was somewhat overpowering and I likely wouldn't try it again. On the Hill: just what you'd expect. I got the rice and beans bowl with plant based chorizo from On the Hill for lunch one day. I couldn't finish it all, so I saved the rest for the later. Complete with lettuce, avocado, and sour cream, it made for famously good leftovers, especially after being reheated. I expected it to taste just as amazing the next day because that's the kind of quality I expect from our neighborhood cafe. And you know what? It was STILL AMAZING. Tamale cakes (your choice of chicken or pork): one big thing of 2 sweet pancake-like patties with lots of real corn mixed into patties sandwiching salsa, guacamole, sour cream, beans, and pork- tons and tons of everything. While I expected just a bland miss-mosh of stuff piled into it, everything was well-marinated, seasoned, and segmented. The pork in particular was soft, moist, juicy and packed full of flavor. It was def more than I could eat in one sitting for a lunch. The sandwiches the girls ordered next to me looked ginormous. They're sweet baked goodies? I'll no longer support this business until their fascist bagel policy is lifted. Try ordering a bagel after 11am and you'll be told "we don't serve breakfast after 11" (menu says 11:30 but I'm usually told 11). Often there's literally a stack of bagels in arms reach when this happens - Bagels that are headed for the trash (I've checked). Bagels are NOT breakfast. Having all-day bagel access at any cafe is as mandatory as all-day coffee. It's not like the toaster is put away after 11am! Bagels don't affect the kitchen line. I work evenings and am rarely in On the Hill before 11am. It's infuriating to be refused a bagel at 11:08am - ESPECIALLY when there's a stack of bagels in plain sight! The final straw came when a cashier refused to sell me an untoasted bagel at 11:06am. I was desperate and said they didn't need to toast it and I could just take it plain with no toppings. I literally could have reached out and grabbed a bagel yet the cashier continued to repeat "we don't sell breakfast after 11". It felt like I was living in a scene from the movie Brazil! The icing is how they throw em away and aren't consistent with their definition of "breakfast" cause I can buy donuts and muffins ALL DAY. Donuts and muffins that sit next to those bagels. I understand why On the Hill would rather sell MICA students $10 sandwiches for lunch instead of $3 bagels but I find this policy reprehensible. Being denied access to bagels in my own neighborhood is ridiculous and I will not support any businesses with fascist bagel policies. read more

Breakfast I get the a breakfast sandwich on a croissant (which is delivered to them every morning).
