This place is amazing! It's a little hole in the wall joint (very unassuming), but the sandwiches are delicious! I'm typically not a fan of roast beef, but went with the staff's suggestion and devoured that sandwich! You get chips and a drink along with the sandwich, making this a great deal and a very filling lunch. There are some tables inside but I enjoyed sitting outside since the weather was perfect for it. The staff is kind, welcoming, fast and you can tell they truly care about delivering a great experience to each customer. Been working in the area for 14 years, checking out a widening circle of industrial park delis and lunch joints. On A Roll is unique in my experience. But you have to go a few times to discern that. Most small delis seem to start out as a married couple or two women who start off buying Costco snack bags and cold cuts and slapping together cold sandwiches like it's for their soccer-playing kids. Industrial parks are littered with this sort of undistinguished place. Some of them develop a strange ambiance if they have strange owners. Pickles is like this. Shun Pickles. Just so you know where I stand. But On A Roll and especially their inventive specials stand out. The Jamaican Jerk Chicken is aggressively spiced and fantastic. Haven't found a clunker yet. I knew I'd like them when I didn't see bean sprouts on the list of available add-ons. They said they didn't carry them at all! WONDERFUL! I hate bean sprouts (also because of the salmonella risk). So folks who don't carry bean sprouts are on my list of comrades. Friendly staff, in my experience, with never a grump in the crowd. Adopted me as a regular as quickly as I adopted them. Great way to pre-order on the web site - no excuse to miss out on a special. Might even convince them to make more of them per day as the weather gets better and more people walk in. Don't try to throw any tip money in their "free penny" dish - tipping isn't in their business model. Frustrating a bit when you get great service, but that's their choice. Love this place! The sandwiches are great size and more than reasonably priced to say the least. They are a cute little shop with really kind workers. I love that it is family owned and run. I've seen a lot of people walk in and they always try to call you by your name if they know it, which makes it very personable. I usually get their BLT on sourdough. Tried this place for the first time based on the Yelp reviews and was underwhelmed. It is located in a business park and probably caters to the businesses in the surrounding area. I did not realize this when I decided to try it out. I ordered the pastrami sandwich. The bread tasted stale. I was seriously checking it to make sure it wasn't moldy. The flavor was good. Could've used a lot more slices of pastrami though. The burrito was pretty much a frozen supermarket burrito dressed up with a slice of melted cheese. The soups were delish. I'd be back if I worked around the area but definitely will not go out of my way. read more

Every time I come here it's like I've died and gone to heaven. Except being greeted by St. Peter at the gates, there's a cashier with the most bubbly personality on earth and all the saints are sandwich makers. They sling them so fast it's like you're in the wild west at high noon, and they always have the time to say hi to the customers. My go to is the chicken salad sandwich and I have to say this is by far the best I've ever had at any sandwich shop or restaurant. They know customers by name and are always friendly, and of course they play the best music. If I'm going to gain weight, I hope it's with their food because it's HANDS DOWN the best ever. read more

I have been here a couple times with my significant other who works in the area. We have only tried the breakfast sausage bagel. So this review is just about that. The jalepeno bagel is really good; not too thick which you occasionally see in breakfast stops. The sausage has always been cooked well and has good flavor. The egg was cooked well as well. What always gets me is why any respectable food establishment uses American cheese. It is processed and inferior to every other ingredient. I wish they'd ditch the processed stuff and use a higher quality product. Overall, good stop but egads the cheese. read more

I usually pack my own lunch for work, but when I don't I typically grab a sandwich at On a Roll. Not only are they in walking distance from my work but they make a great sandwich at a great price. Their daily specials are always interesting and delicious, and for $6.50 for a sandwich, soda and chips you can't go wrong. I normally really love this place UNTIL this morning. I called in an order for my coworker and I for breakfast and my coworker ordered bacon on his breakfast sandwich. I was told, we are out of bacon. 9am on a Monday morning and no bacon? Also the special for the day is a club sandwich. So I asked about the special and was told they are saving the bacon for the special. Uh... Ok. My coworker is a serious regular, going there sometimes everyday. So I say his name and say can you please give him a few pieces. The woman on the phone glibly says- "Sometimes we need to get out of our comfort zone." I'm sorry, what?? I don't know you like that dearie. Also, how lame are those planning skills. You have bacon on your lunch special so you can't get extra for breakfast? When I called her out on it and said I would pay for the special in exchange for his breakfast, she was rude again, didn't apologize and was NOT helpful. The whole thing is so ridiculous. I've been coming to this place for nearly a year now, even after our firm moved and there's a deli located next door to our new place. I've also tried a few around the Carlsbad business parks, and this one is my favorite (and my coworkers agree). I almost always get their daily specials. Standouts are the pork loin sandwich with this awesome sweet sauce and the "Marinated BBQ Grilled Tri-Tip, Toasted San Francisco Style Sourdough Baguette, Carmelized Onions, Sweet Red Peppers, Swiss Cheese, Aoli, Au Jus Dipping Sauce" ...the tri tip is always super juicy and tender and the au jus is amazing. One of these are usually offered on a Friday, sometimes every other week. The only drawback is that it's hard to tell when they'll be on the menu; at the deli, they have a chart that tells you the daily specials two weeks in advance and online, you can see the special for the day. The red crab bisque and mushroom bisque are also sometimes offered as the daily special soup. Highly recommend. The owner and his wife and staff are super friendly. When I first started going, I accidentally grabbed an "upgrade" potato chip bag that cost more than was part of the daily special, and he didn't charge me extra. As I started coming more often, they learned my name and my coworkers and like to joke around with us. One time, when it was slow, I chatted with the owner for a little bit, and he was very enthusiastic about coming up with ideas for his daily specials, watching the food network etc for inspiration. It's great to see a place take pride in their food. Tip: If you can control your hunger, best times are to order lunch online and pick up before 11:15am or after 12:45pm. They have a breakfast menu, but I've never tried that. read more

dude this place is so good. i started working down the street from here a couple months ago and everyone would tell me how good they were but i was a little skeptical at first. not anymore. i saw somewhere that someone compared it to "good ol' mamma used to cook it like this" and it's true. every time i eat here i'm reminded of the food my grandmother made me growing up. the first time i went here i got a sandwich and a the roasted red pepper tomato bisque. i don't even remember what my sandwich was because the soup was SO good. the girl i work with hates tomato bisque but even she checks their website every day to see if its the soup of the day. since then, i've gone almost every day for snacks, soup, or the daily special sandwich. i'm not sure what it's called but there's one that almost like a beef dip with au jus that three of us devoured. when i went in to pick it up the girl even said "you haven't had this one yet. it's..." and gave me the A OK hand sign and boy was it. i also was surprised at how much i enjoyed their breakfast burrito, as i had expected it to be one of those really americanized gross breakfast burritos but it was actually super good! they only have tapatio in little packets though, as we can't expect them to have a fancy salsa when only one thing on the menu calls for it, so i would suggest bringing your own if you're picky about that. but seriously get the breakfast burrito. i do it with sausage AND bacon. woa. not only is the food great but so are the people that work there. they're so quick it's absurd, and if they take more that two minutes to do something they'll all apologize to you for the remaining time it takes and thank you for waiting. honestly thank YOU guys for existing and being cool and making good food. they, unlike most of the other food shops across palomar airport road, understand that most of the people coming to grab food are on their lunch break and don't have 30 minutes to wait for someone to pull their head out. (i used to work at one of those restaurants, so i can say that, right?) you can tell they've got good relationships with all the people who come in and learn what they like and i when restaurants do that. it's the little things. on top of everything else, the food is fairly priced. coffee's like, a dollar. chips are a dollar. sandwiches range from 4-8 and the daily specials usually get you chips and a drink as well. go here. read more

I work nearby and go hear every once-in-a-while. It can get busy, so I decided to place my order online, for pickup at 12:20. When I arrived, exactly at 12:20, my order was not ready. I then proceeded to stand their waiting for another 20 minutes, watching many other orders go out. The only reason that I gave it two stars is because the lady working the order desk tried to rush the back along, although they seemed very uninterested in the fact that I had been waiting so long.
