Let me start by saying I don't think I have had better tasting bread/roll on a sandwich anywhere else in recent memory than I have had here at On a Roll. From the first bite I had from my own Focaccia Roll, to the rest of my wife's Onion Roll I sampled hours later at home, it was perfectly baked and delicious with a lightly chewy crust to a soft and very flavorful interior that blended nicely salted and slightly sweet notes with a fragrant hint of herbs in the aftertaste. Seriously outstanding bread. With that being said, I very much liked our visit to On a Roll in Carlsbad. It's a small shop in the middle of an Office Park, open only during weekdays, with an interior that reminds of the shops I used to visit with my father back in the late 80's and 90's. The service was personable, their menu extensive, and their side selections include the Dirty Potato Chips brand, which is always a plus. I ordered their daily special, which was grilled chicken and sharp provolone that was supposed to be served on a French baguette. As noted, it eventually came on a Focaccia Roll, which was still delicious, but I admittedly would have preferred what was advertised. The chicken was well cooked, the horseradish sauce had a nice and light bite, and it was overall very tasty. My wife had The Gambler, which the wall menu stated was a roast beef and cheddar on a onion roll. When we sat down and looked at the take home menu, we realized it also came with tomatoes and mustard, two things she detests. Looking back at the wall menu, we saw the disclaimer that all sandwiches come with those standard written at the bottom in darker green lettering. We tried to amend our order and have those left off, but it was too late. She was able to salvage her lunch by removing the bottom bun and still thought her meal was pretty good. Overall, issues aside, our lunch here at On a Roll was pretty fantastic. And even despite those two errors in our order, I have to say I want to come back. With the bread they have here leading the way, the freshly sliced meat to order, and a wide selection of options that all sound worth a try, we definitely plan on making our way out here again in the future. read more

Service was friendly. Looked like over other person was a regular and was greeted by name. Two people working the back - taking turns taking orders, making food, answering phones. They have a decent selection of sandwiches available. I got the Californian. My husband got the egg sandwich. The sourdough could have been more fresh. It was crumbly and a little dry. The sandwich would've been better toasted. I should have asked if that was possible. Lots of Dirty Brand chips available and lots of drinks to choose from. Parking is not a problem. This was my first time here. I support mom & pop shops because they're more receptive to criticism. I'll say that the food was good. Quality and quantity. These are not in question. Not even the fact that my order was late, despite using the online ordering system where you can select the time, did it put me off. I ordered for 12:35 pickup and it wasn't ready until 12:52. It shouldn't seem like a big deal but when you only have 1/2 an hour for lunch it will definitely make you cringe. But even still I'll allow for slammed orders. What does bother me enough to question my patronage is this... ...I saw the lady barehand my pickles. That's a no-no for which I was gonna quietly suggest she use gloves or tongs or something...ANYTHING in the name of hygiene. As I waited for my food stewing harder the longer I waited, I was sure I was gonna say something about the barehandedness. But then, as I was told for the 4th time that my order was finishing up, I peaked at the one making my sandwich. I'm assuming he was the owner. He wasn't wearing any gloves either! Then as I waited an extra 2 minutes while the son scooped my chili into the cup and barehanded the lip that had chili already on it, touching CHILI! Bro it's 2025, gloves are mandatory. I hope they change their procedures to include gloves and possibly hairnets too. Otherwise I can't see myself returning. If you want a pork sandwich full of inedible fat and gristle and a huge cube of fat 1"x1", come here! If you complain you'll be told to just pull out the fat but then all you'd have is a bun. I was planning on going to the beach today and decided to drop by and get a sandwich for an easy grab and go lunch. You can either have half sandwich or a whole sandwich depending on how you're feeling. However, there are some sandwiches that you cannot get in half depending on what the bread is being used. Standard for all the sandwiches include: lettuce, tomato, mayo, Dijon mustard unless stated otherwise. Pickle and onion can be added upon request with no charger. Next time I should have read the whole menu beforehand because I did not see it in the beginning. I'm the type of gal who likes onion on my sandwich. For lunch i got the Ultimate 9 ($12.95) which includes: turkey, ham, roast beef, bacon, squash, cheddar, avocado on a 9inch French roll. I don't eat beef so I requested without it and they offered to add more of the different meats as a substitute. I was also feeling nice and decided to get my partner a breakfast sandwich on bagel ($5.25) which had the typical egg, cheese and choices of meat (options: bacon, sausage, ham, chorizo, or egg scrambled). The sandwich can also either me on a muffin ($4), toast ($4) or French toast ($6.75) You can also create your own sandwich- but let's be honest if I do that there's a chance I may not like it hah so better stick with the safe choice and choose from the menu. read more

A friend at work told me about this place yesterday which is close to the office, so I decided to try it out. I got the Holiday Harvest which is basically Thanksgiving in a sandwich - turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce on squaw bread. The people were super friendly when I went in to pick up my online order, and the sandwich was delicious! Great turkey, fresh bread, so good! Decent sandwich joint. I keep going here by accident. The first time, I was looking for a different place and literally walked in and out. That place was closed, so I drove back to On A Roll and ordered a few sandwiches for my family. They loved them, so I made a mental note. The second time, I was at a doctor's appointment nearby and wanted to grab something for breakfast, but I decided that it was too close to lunch and should take some sandwiches home. I found a nearby sandwich place that apparently makes a mean roast pork sammy and had no idea it was On A Roll again. I don't really have any complaints. I like the owners and I like the sandwiches. Cool place. I was actually in the area to go to another sandwich shop, but the whole process ended-up being so complicated (order online - pick up here... whatever) that I left and stumbled on this place. Very nice sandwich board and the ability to craft your own. I chose one of their standard sandwiches that was as close to an 'Italian' as I could find. They told me 15 to 20 minutes wait, but it was more like 5. While I was waiting, the owner (clearly) was bouncing around thanking people for coming in and cleaning tables. There's a nice area indoor to sit as well as some tables outdoors, although it's an industrial park and obviously caters to tons of people from that general area. The sandwich was very good.
