I always like an independent deli tucked away. These are the gems I look for and this one was good. Clean inside, although a little generic. No fun decor or character. I got great roast beef sandwich with premium ingredients and better than average portions. I am going to miss Charlie! Went to La Place Deli today and learned he retired. I wish him all the best for having served the area of Carlsbad for so many years. In the span of my working years in Carlsbad from 2014-2017 I almost visited La Place daily. La Place is under new ownership and is undergoing a menu change. The inside of the deli was still the same with indoor and outdoor seating. Still very clean and well kept. The new owner introduced herself and was very kind. She mentioned that the menu going forward will likely change seasonally. Off of the new menu I chose to go with the Ham and Cheese sandwich. For the bread I chose squaw and Swiss for the cheese. I did customize it with no tomato and added onion. The overall preparation of the sandwich and taste was pretty spot on for the classic simple La Place deli sandwiches that I love. I was happy to see that the sandwich still came with a complimentary macaroni salad. The flavor of the salad has changed including roasted red peppers (or roasted tomatoes, hard for me to tell). In all honesty, the changed Mac salad was not my favorite -- I loved the simplicity of the black pepper and mayo of the old recipe. I wish the new owner the best! I'll still be swinging by if I'm local to Carlsbad on weekdays. read more

This place is one of many cafes near my work and I only heard good things so I decided to check it out. I called them to order my lunch thinking it would take a while for them to get it ready and it was already done by the time I walked over. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl, I am pretty picky about my teriyaki, and it was very tasty. They also gave me a small side of Mac salad and I need a jar of that stuff it was so tasty! I went back on a rainy day and got their soup of the day and a sandwich. The soup was their chicken poblano and it was wonderful especially in the cold day. Oh the food...very fresh ingredients, generous portions, and priced right to eat here multiple times a week without hurting your wallet. My absolute favorite sandwich is the BLT with avocado, and they do not skimp on the avo. They are freshly sliced pieces evenly distributed. The lettuce is cold and I like the thinly sliced sourdough; perfectly toasted. The quality is consistent. Sandwiches come with a side of macaroni salad. They have some specialties like Asian-style bowls, daily soups, and others that I'm sure are amazing. Oh and several breakfast items. I've heard many patrons order these items and I'm inspired to try them but am so loyal to the BLTA that it's hard to stray. Just went to La Place Deli for the first time. Very nice owner, very fast. I ordered a Cobb Salad with Avocado to go. Got to me destination, no avocado. It really bothers me when that happens.
