Modern Leather Goods is the only approved Briggs & Riley repair vendor in Manhattan, which is…read moreexactly why I went. The zipper on my cabin carry-on had jammed completely and I couldn't get the bag open or closed properly. I brought it in expecting to leave it for at least a few hours if not a day or two. Instead, the person helping me took a look, got to work, and had the zipper unstuck and running smoothly in about 15 minutes while I waited. What really impressed me is that he didn't just fix it, he showed me how to handle it myself if it ever happens again. His technique: overstuff the bag so the fabric draws out and the tension increases around the zipper track, then give the caught area a few firm flicks with the edge of a credit card. The added tension plus the flicking releases the fabric from the zipper teeth. Simple, clever, and the kind of trade knowledge you only get from people who have been doing this for a long time.

I have two old Ferragamo handbags that lost their luster. I tried spiffing them up myself and…read morewasn't very successful. Modern Leather in Manhattan was highly recommended. I filled out the paperwork on the Internet and mailed the leather bags to their Manhattan shop. I received a call the day the handbags were received. I gave a credit card number to repair both bags for $150 and $35 shipping and handling. I was told the bags would be returned to me within two weeks. The bags were returned by FedEx and have a glossy luster and shine now. The black bag looks like new and the white is better but not perfect.

Express Shoe Repair - Again, the upper heel not put back into the lower heel.

I paid a good amount to get my boots fixed but I love them so felt it was well worth it. When I…read morewent to pick them up, the owner gave me a very lengthy and thorough explanation of how I walked and how I was effing my shoes up. From what I gathered he really wanted to say: "You lazy sloth. Stop schleping through the streets of NYC and effing up your damn shoes." A day later, I heard and felt a really awful grating thing going on with my boots. A few days later I explained this to him and much to his dismay and with deep disappointment he removed the extra heel he installed in my boot. Though this seemed to be the saddest/most annoying thing he ever witnessed, he agreed to remove the extra heel thing and all was right again in the world.

I brought clogs in to be re-soled. thought it was a straightforward job. He did not attempt to…read morematch the color of the original soles at all, made them 1/2 inch thicker which completely changed the look of the shoe, cut the edges of the new soles so poorly so that there are still loose pieces of rubber coming out AND to top it off whatever he did to remove the old soles and attach new ones has left cuts, scrapes and scuffs on the wood, as well as glue residue on the grommets. Additionally, he opted to polish the shoe (didn't ask for that) and did such a sloppy job that there is polish all over the wood. All I wanted was new soles for my shoes and he managed to ruin them. Highly advise you go elsewhere, terrible craftsmanship and cost me $50

If you're looking for a Doc Marten specialist, this is the place…read more I've got 6 pairs of Doc's 1461s - I use them for work and walking around Brooklyn. My latest pair came very narrow - way more than usual. I did my usual Mink oil, heating routine for breaking them in but they were still too tight. I dropped them off at East Village Shoe Repair on Saturday afternoon. For $15 they widened them on their stretching machine for 48 hours. I put them on and it was like a Doc Marten Triple E wide!!! I couldn't be happier! I dropped off another pair of Doc 1461 Vintage that I got for cheap on Poshmark for $40. They looked dull, especially the stitching. East Village Shoe Repair has legit Doc Marten yellow thread and will restitch for $25. Other "Doc Marten" specialists want $80+ to restitch. Total bargain. Yeah, the place is messy. It's a fucking shoe repair place in Bushwick. I wouldn't care if there were rats running around (there weren't). I'm here to get my shoes fixed, not to meet a fucking princess for tea and crumpets. If you need a pretty place that charges crazy prices go to that shoe repair place in Williamsburg that would charge $100 for restitching. But if you're not a Midwestern douche on your parent's allowance then drop off your shoes here, grab a couple of cocktails with the money you've saved and smile, knowing you're one step ahead of the crowd (of sheeples). The end.
