I like this place. It's simple but delicious Indian vegetarian food. And for those of you who think "vegetarian" can't mean "filling" -- well, you need to try this place! The potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, rice, naan bread, and unlimited refills make for a very filling meal, and the flavours are very nice. Plus, you can't beat the price. It's $6.50 for all-you-can-eat vegetarian thali. It comes served in an ugly metal platter with raised partitions that makes you feel vaguely like you're in institutionalised home -- or prison. Luckily, all you have to do is look up and around you to realise that you're actually in a pleasant, cozy place -- the atmosphere is nice, cheap and cheerful, with brightly painted walls and a view out onto Elizabeth Street. They also have a variety of sides like samosas that you can order, as well as a few drinks (mango lassi, etc.) It's definitely authentic-tasting Indian food, as well -- as evidenced by the fact that many of the patrons here are Indian themselves. This place also supports the homeless -- anyone who is hungry and needs a meal but can't pay is welcome at Om for a free meal between 3pm and 5pm. For vegans, note that the vegetarian thali is all-vegan, but specify when you order so they make you vegan naan bread. (The naan bread by default is non-vegan, but they don't mind making it vegan for you.) Also, the mango lassi and a few of their desserts contain dairy, so just be aware. There are 4 locations of Om Vegetarian -- one near Southern Cross, one at Capitol Arcade between Collins and Little Collins, one at Wales Arcade between Collins and Flinders Lane, and this one (Elizabeth Street, just north of Flinders Street station). I've been to this one and the Capitol Arcade one and definitely prefer this one in terms of atmosphere. To get to this one, you have to go into the Gurkhas Institute Building and go up the stairs. It's all about the naan. ALL ABOUT THE NAAN. Omg. Delicious bready goodness to sop up the amazing curry on your plate without shame as you eat with your hands. I don't know what the dishes are called and one day I plan to learn but it changes every month or so. If you ever find them serving a yellow curry yogurt potato dish PLEASE CALL ME. I have been hanging out for that to come back on the menu since forever. They also rock an excellent lentil dish and their spice/curry ratio is just perfect - enough to hit the taste buds but not to make you cry. Get on that mango lassi too - a sweet treat to balance out all that curry. Also don't be afraid to try the little sweet treats they put on your plate - I hesitated at the ghee nut and carrot mix that was sitting under my naan once but then it put it in my mouth and it was delicious. I love the simplicity of this restaurant. They don't worry about decorating or doing any fancy. For them, it's all about the food. The food is also simple. You can tell they don't do anything super fancy with the food, so it's pretty healthy. The service is also simple (no surprise), but the workers are nice and cheerful. You might complain that the place doesn't feel like a restaurant, but you have to think about what to expect for the price. And you get quite a lot. For $6.50, you get all-you-can-eat rice, naan, and curry. (There are two kinds of curry, and these change every day.) It would be weird to compare this to regular restaurants since it's so different. There is a similar restaurant nearby called Crossways, and because of the unconvential style that these two places share, I can't help but compare them. I have to say that compared to Crossways, this place is a little lacking. It's true that there are two different kinds of curry here, compared to one at Crossways, but I find the one curry at Crossways to be better. I would prefer the single curry at Crossways over the greater variety here. Crossways also includes drinks and desserts in the meal, whereas at Om Vegetarian, these have to be purchased separately. I don't think Om Vegetarian is bad given what it offers, but I just feel that its main competitor does a lot better. I know that I would get a good meal if I came here, but I could go to Crossways and get a better meal. Om Vegetarian is a nifty little hide-away on Elizabeth Street. Working similar to 'Crossways', there is a meal-of-the-day option every day and for $6.50 you can eat until your heart (or stomach that is) is content. The food here is so tasty, a tad on the spicier side and the meals are a tad smaller in portion size compared to crossways. I have eaten here occasionally and have been satisfied with the meals, the staff are happy to refill your meals but sometimes after the third time (yes, for me the portions are really small and i could go back for third helpings!) they get a bit well... defensive. Om Vegetarian is a tad hard to find, if you hop down a small inlet on Elizabeth St you will see some elevators which will take you up to Level 1. read more

On my trip to Melbourne, this was one of the places I was jonesing to try! I had heard stories of the infamous $6.50 ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT vegetarian food, but I was skeptical, real skeptical, that this dreamland wouldn't meat (ha) expectations. After you order at the counter, the kind staff serve you up a metal tray with two types of curry, naan, and rice. The initial portions are small, so your immediate thought will be "thank Harry this is all you can eat!" But once you're finished with the first portion - which will be almost immediately - you have to hop back up and wait in line at the counter for your "refill." I don't mind waiting for bottomless curry by any means, but it's the odd mix of social pressure by everyone else there and especially the staff that almost makes you feel bad for wanting seconds, let alone, for even attempting to go back for thirds. A staff member did pass us once in the twenty or so minutes we were there with fresh naan which was fantastic, but it really was the curry we were after, and we just couldn't bring ourselves to go back to that counter more than twice. While Om claims to be all-you-can-eat, and I'm sure they wouldn't refuse this promise, something about it definitely doesn't make the experience as gastronomic as you'd hope for. NOMaste? The places reminded me of yoga retreat or a random restaurant in India. Was packed with few Indian family so that made me feel better. The food was good. Simple two curries with rice and nan bread. I was shocked at how good the food was, and instantaneously thought that I will definitely come back here again after the very first bite. The staff there are so very friendly, and when we went there, I ordered the all you can eat, whilst my girlfriend wasn't that hungry so she just bought some juice. So what does one of the staff do? The food is tasty and mostly not too spicy. I'm especially a fan of their naan bread. It's excellent value too at $6.50 a meal. There's not many meal options costing as little as $6.50 in the area that aren't fast food or convenience store junk, let alone all you can eat like this. I just tried this place because of friend's recommendation and I can say that I am not impressed. All you can eat for 6.50 is definitely the selling point here, the food is not good at all. If you're into carbs this place would be perfect. They serve you naan breads, rice, potato curry and bean curry. But I strongly can say that this is the worst naan breads I've ever tried, some part of it was uncooked and it taste plainly weird. I personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone, for the price I don't think it's outstanding at all, you pay what you get basically. I'd rather buy breakfast juice. read more

I don't know where else you can get all you can eat curry and a smile for $6.50?!! I have no idea why there is not a queue out the door to get in but for some reason there is a lady out the front that is trying to entice people. The owner walks around with a basket filled with naan as you eat the curry made special each day with a purpose to feed when food is needed. The service took a while but the continually came around with naan bread offerings and you take your plate back to the counter for a top up if you want more. Hidden away up some stairs on the corner of Elizabeth and Flinders Lane the team here provide what has to be amongst the best bargains in Melbourne. For a pittance, $6.50, you get unlimited vegetarian curries, three to choose from and ulimited naan bread. Whilst I am not that experienced with veg curries, naans are right up my ally and the ones this crew turns out are first class. Having to visit Melbourne for the first time and being a vegetarian this restaurant was by such a great balance of food and taste. What surprised me was their refills, after my first serve i had specifically asked just their lentil dhal, the lady had served me everything asking to eat well. Overall very happy with this place. Terrible service, they actually seam disappointed when customers walk through the door. They say 'all you can eat' but get annoyed and act like you are being unreasonable when asking for refills. They actually have 0 care about your experience and don't even bother wiping down the tables. Food is just salty water and it never changes and you are lucky to even get one serve of naan bread that apparently is part of the meal deal. Not a good time, do not recommend. read more
