Absolutely amazing food. The service was great as well as the flavor of the food. Everything tasted good and I would definitely go back.

Tonight, my flatmates decided to bring me to Desi Dhaba for some Indian lovin' and boy did we leave satisfied. We shared 4 dishes among the 3 of us. Paneer Saag, Butter Chicken, Chilli Garlic Chicken, and a Lamb Vindaloo. All the sauces were bold and flavourful and it was such a pleasure mopping the plates dry with amazing naan that just came out of the tandoor. Our first time eating here. We do consider ourselves somewhat connoisseurs of Indian food and while we enjoyed this, and the price is right and service good, it is not 5 stars - but worth a visit! Amazing food, beware it is spicy! But we loved it. The service was terrible! We had to hail down a waiter to have our orders taken about half an hour after we were seated. My husband and I ordered the vegetarian banquet whilst seated with a group of friends. When the food was brought out even though we asked several times if the entree was for the banquet and assured us it was, it wasn't and our friends had to request another entree. The mains were fine but our desserts were again mixed up and we never received our second dessert. Next time we will order takeaway and have it up in our apartment. read more

Made a booking via Dimmi Served to find out they did not serve chaat anymore and hasn't been for a year but had failed to update their online menu. Fail We were devo Ordered paneer butter masala and saag chicken with garlic naan. Delicious flavours. Good food. Massive menu but please bring the chaat back. Two curries. This was my 3rd trip to Melbourne this year and the first trip that I asked my cab driver for a food recommendation. He was from Sri Lanka so decided to ask for an Indian food recommendation. I let him know that I had eaten at Tonka during my earlier visit and wanted something low key-local dive. After a few hours of tooling around National Gallery I was starving and decided to venture toward Desi Dhaba. I walked past the door a couple times and then followed a local family thru the door. Long story short, I'm glad I did. The food was delicious and just the right portion for a late lunch. The staff were accommodating, the manager super friendly. The decor was novel. Recommendations: the restaurant should invest in new fan for kitchen as it was a little smokey. I'll definitely go back. read more

Another hidden gem in the Melbourne CBD. My coworkers and I were roaming the city at midnight looking for some food options that did not include Chinese (having just spent 2 weeks in Thailand and Singapore), and low and behold, right in Flinders is Desi Dhaba. It's like my fairy godmother answered my prayers. The interior is eclectic, but somehow it inspires you to think of India, where I lived for 3 months 8 years ago. The smells transport you back to, but it's the food, the amazing and delicious food that really seals the deal. Living in India had ruined me to eating Indian food outside of India and city mainstays like London, and perhaps it was the 18 hour time zone difference or the fact that I was starving, but this place hit all the right notes. I love the all you can eat serve yourself lunch banquet here. $15.90 for a range of tasty Indian standard dishes. Dahl, tandoori chicken, lamb Rogan Josh, rice, vegetable pakora, butter chicken etc. It's all lined up and away you go. It's a cracker. What else could one want. A great hearty meal and great value. The staff are routinely brisk and polite in my experience. It all adds up to a very enjoyable overall experience. All power to them. read more

I've dined at Desi Dhaba twice now. The first time was after an alcohol fueled night & I seemed to recall really enjoying the food but the alcohol may have clouded my judgement if today's dining experience was anything to go by. The butter naan/roti bread were delicious but the two chicken dishes that we had were a little disappointing. Described on the menu as chicken breast I would hazard a guess that in fact it was thigh or some other part of the chicken. I'm instantly put off a dish when you start chewing on gristly bits of meat and when the gristly piece happens to be your first mouthful it is not a good thing. The dishes were flavoursome but I think I would have preferred to have just had a bowl of the sauce minus the meat in which to dip the naan bread into. Today it seemed as if they only had one chef cooking as the food was brought out fairly slowly and the waiting staff really didn't seem very interested in what they were doing. A good Indian meal for me is one whereby the taste of the meal is not still lingering in my mouth for hours after eating it & sadly that was not the case after this meal. read more

Was there for a quick bite as heard was good for a take away and saw previous good reviews. Decided to sit in, the chicken tikka had gristly bits, it should not have any, the eggplant curry and roti was nice. But here's the low rate kickin -as we were eating desert saw a COCKROACH on the wall. This is rare for Melbourne, so all the mire startling! Told the Manager and he was only apologetic but did not cut it with a better response like even taking off desert that we stopped eating. We left feeling sick, and lasted for hours and ended our night out abruptly. Won't be back. Ever. read more

Went here for $14.90 lunch last Friday. They keep the food up and it was of reasonable quality, perhaps just below what you would expect for a shovel joint. Service was fine although don't expect to be waitered on. Restaurant set-up is kind of like going to your Indian mates old mum's house. First time to Melbourne and decided to try out this Indian food place for dinner on a Thursday night. It wasn't very crowded so we were seated quickly. The ambience was good and it smelled nice. I ordered Punjabi butter chicken and my mom ordered paneer vindaloo with rotis. The butter chicken was sweet like dessert and paneer dish seemed more like chilly flakes added to a sweet dish. Went here for Melbourne Desi Club meetup dinner as we have members from India, Pakistan Nepal and Sri Lanka and wanted Indian or Pakistani style food was quite reasonable and central location in Melbourne CBD is a plus point! I have a love of Indian food and was tipped off by a Indian of this restaurant. I can not complain about the food , the food was full of flavour...however I would like to complain about the service. The guy serving us was nice however his only priority was to upsell (on everything !) and this drives me absolutely insane. We ordered a large style entree and 2 curries ... We asked for rice to share and a roti. We were told he doesn't think one roti would be enough for us , my partner then informed him I'm not a big eater so we don't want to order to much. He said we should get 2 rice and 2 roti so we agreed with the expert. After the food arrived I was so angry . There was way to much food for us and I had to get the majority all takeaway. What really frustrated me is that he had actually given us 2 large rices and we were charged extra for these. I understand up selling takes place but when we insisted we didn't want to much to eat, he disagreed with our order and hid his up selling and charged us for 2' large rices this really pushed my buttons. I will not be returning due to this and will not recommend it. You need truthful waiters descent waiters ! read more

If you are in Melbourne and looking for quality Indian food, avoid this place at all costs. I ordered Lamb Rogan Josh. What I got was shoe leather Rogan Josh that was tough as nails and when I complained the waiter said everyone else was ordering lamb and enjoying it. In my experience, when someone complains about food, usually the wait staff apologize not defend and say it must be "your taste sir ". As if the food wasn't bad enough, the service was even worse. I travel across the globe every month and enjoy Indian food in countries like the UK, Canada and even Germany for that matter. The food quality has gone down since my first time here. The falooda was deplorable. They never have the sugarcane or guava juice for the cocktails. This place was good the first time. Delivery not worth while but the staff is nice and the service is good. The atmosphere and decor are what make this place but the food and drinks are quite sub-par. read more
