I've been coming here for 20 years, and absolutely love this place! The owners are very kind. The place is no frills, a very small shop to enter, and get what you need. My absolute favorite is a long John donut, as they make the perfect whipped cream filling! We stopped by on the way out of town for a quick breakfast. I'm so glad we did! First thing, full stop. Their version of a sour cream old fashioned was the best I've ever had. It was so soft and had great flavor. I wish i had gotten more than one. We also got a plain donut that was good. I think im used to them being more spiced so it was an adjustment at first. It would probably be fabulous as a dipping or dunking donut. I will say I wasnt a fan of the apple kolache(?). Not sure of the spelling. It was an enriched dough with an apple topping in the middle. The dough had a great texture but it ended up tasting like apple pie filling on a hamburger bun to me. Husband agreed. It wasn't badly made, it just wasn't what we prefer in a pastry. Overall we really liked what we got. Next time we are in town we will probably (definitely) grab a few more sour cream donuts. I had read about Olsen Bake Shop while researching where to eat in Omaha and I'm really glad I took the time to stop in. It was a bit out of the way of my hotel, but it's on a main strip and I had a pleasant time walking over. It isn't open too late so you need to get there early. When I arrived, I was the only patron in there and there were three people eager to help me. I ended up ordering a couple of donuts and a kolache (I love kolaches but they're hard to find near me in DC so I was delighted to find them here). The donuts were melt in your mouth fresh and I savored every bite. The kolache itself was great, but the raspberry filling tasted very artificial, which was a letdown. A non descriptive outside in a mostly residential near downtown neighborhood, Olsen Bake Shop is a-must stop any morning while in Omaha. Closes at 12:30 pm. Enter and you'll be greeted by a pleasant lady who will quickly and efficiently wait on you. A second lady was preparing baked goods in the back. Everything looks like it might've in the 1960's. Super, Super Clean! The doughnuts are so fresh. The ingredients high quality and delicious. Each doughnut is super light. Cost for one doughnut and several doughnut holes was $1.50. On my perpetual doughnut quest, I rank Olsen's as one of the best in the classics category. This no frills bake shop puts out great tried and true classic glazed doughnuts, crullers, iced cake, glazed croissants, etc. The cake doughnut had a great golden color but the cake recipe itself was a little bland. I like a little spice or oomph in my cake doughnuts so these just tasted a bit mild. Quite sweet icing but it wasn't too thick. They're also a bargain at just $1 per doughnut! Some places are selling crazy toppings these days but Olsens sticks to the classics and does them well. During COVID they are limiting capacity to 3 customers at once (it's quite a small shop). Such a cute little shop. It's a no frills donut shop, but man are they putting out fire donuts!! My husband and I are harsh critics on donuts, and these were some of the best we've ever had. The freshest donuts in Omaha!! We have lived in the "Little Bohemia" part of Omaha for 20+ years and this is a landmark family business. I had not visited Olsen's in a couple of years, dealing with various Covid policies over most of the time, but today is the first day of our family vacation and I had a lot of packing to do for the road trip and I suggested going to buy a few donuts for breakfast. I knew they had re-opened but hadn't seen if their business was back. When I arrived, I had to drive around to get a parking space. I realized, the street was full because of the line for Olsen's. People waited outside for the chance to enter the lobby and place their orders. A donut is $1.25 ($15/dozen) and the owner will give you a smile to start your day. When I got home and ate the glazed donut and the chocolate frosted long john with coconut it was obvious that they were prepared this morning, so minutes old instead of hours or more from the grocery store. OMG, I love this bakery. I went here for the first time with my daughter a couple weeks ago and the donuts were amazing. You walk in and stand in line for a couple minutes since this place isn't a secret any more. I ordered a few glazed/frosted donuts and an apple fritter. They just took the fritter out of the oven and holy geez, it was the best apple fritter I've ever had. The prices are very reasonable as well. $1 -$1.50 or so per donut. Located on 10th Street in Little Italy, Olsen's is a family-owed and operated business that has never once failed to please. Their cake doughnuts offer the perfect balance of fluffy goodness inside with a crisp outside, and of course have either chocolate or vanilla icing. Olsen Bake Shop is a small place south of downtown Omaha. It has no seating. The area around the shop isn't the greatest. The shop itself is bare bones. It's staffed by a few older ladies that will curtly take your order and fill it promptly. No fuss. Minimal chat. Older reviews said they don't take credit card. Wrong. They do, but there's an extra 50¢ charge to all purchases. Let's be real: any review that says "these are the BEST DONUTS EVAR" is hyperbolic. Donuts are donuts, and very little separates those that are good from one another. These donuts are generally good. The plain glazed was soft, not overly sweet, and melted in my mouth. The glazed croissant was surprising good and similar to the glazed donut. I'd rate both of these in the top echelon of donuts from the myriad of donut places at which I've eaten. The chocolate glazed longjohn with white filling was "meh." The cheese danish was dry. These two rated on par with grocery store donuts. Wouldn't buy them again. Finally: price. $1+ per donut. Some reviews say those are good prices. Not sure where they live, but in all my travels in the Midwest, that puts them squarely on the pricey side.
