It's not often you'd find Greek cuisine in Honolulu. Olive Tree Cafe has been in Kahala for as long as I can remember. Pretty sure this place has stood the test of time for a good decade, if not more. Greek cuisine is pretty much an unknown culinary adventure for me, my stomach, and my tastebuds. It's good to try new things from time to time. With yelp, anything new and exciting becomes very exciting and extraordinary. I've seen a packed house here on the weekends when I come to Kahala Mall and wished I was part of the action, or at the very least, sample parts of that said action. My time here at Olive Tree Cafe was brief, as it was a takeout affair. Kind of wanted to dine at home with family while watching television at the time. While that seemed like a good thing, that crowd I saw that night seemed to probably be a birthday party. How could you not get happy and sucked into the celebrations. While Gyros is apart of the Greek cuisine forefront, I wanted to see if there are more than just that. I opted for take out and definitely got my hands full with that. My friends and I made a stop here on a brisk Friday evening in January 2019. The ambiance was celebratory and very festive. We wanted a quick option for dinner, but as it turned out, it was more awesome than I knew. I suppose I came here when it's not usually like this. The overall experience here at Olive Tree Cafe was smooth, terrific, causal, and a lot of fun. As mentioned before, it's not usually like this on a Saturday night, but when I went there, it was a definitely a party! I guess I got lucky that night and was treated to something epic! The service was good and friendly. With a limited memory of what Greek cuisine really is beyond gyros, I had to look at photos on yelp and sought the help of google before arrival. I remembered the terms hummus, baklava, Greek salad, and falafel. Everything else was new to me. I ended choosing a couple of baklava, some falafel, and just went nose first in with the entrees, which turned out to be fantastic. Trying new cuisines is quite epic and refreshing when you have them in your own backyard, figuratively speaking. The restaurant itself was small, yet can hold about 20 people outside in their dining area. Since they are close to Kahala Mall, you can be sure that there's ample parking for you - even though they have a private parking lot as well, with Subway and other merchants in this commercial block. I did enjoy the baklava very much and the falafel was delicious. I ended up choosing the fish souvlaki as the main dish and it didn't disappoint! It was delicious and definitely satisfying. Never knew Greek cuisine was flavorful and freshly done. I would definitely like to recommend coming here, if you are in the mood for Greek cuisine. They only open for dinner, starting at 5pm and ending at 10pm. The service here was good, festive, and definitely friendly. The ambiance was nice and party style. It was nice to have a fresh take on food and a fresh outlook on what's out there in the Kahala neighborhood than just what I already have eaten in Kahala Mall over the years. Only thing though, is that they are cash only. No credit or debit cards accepted here, which is a pain for those of us who love to use the plastic cards wherever we go. Olive Tree Cafe is located pretty much next door to Kahala Mall in a small commercial cul de sac. Next door is Subway, among the tenants. It's address is 4614 Kīlauea Avenue. As mentioned before, parking can be found in front of the restaurant, but you can also park at the mall too and walk on over. If you are like me and public transportation is your game, bus routes 1, 1L, 14, 22, 23, and 24 come through the area. Only routes 14, 22, 23, and 24 actually stop in front of the restaurant. For the most part though, I enjoyed my time here at the Olive Tree Cafe. It's about a mile and half from my home, so it's good to check things out in the neighborhood. If you are in the area, I recommend coming here to expand your culinary palate and discover what's hidden in your backyard. It's definitely a hidden gem to have a Greek restaurant here in the Kahala area. The time we went, there was one guy - nice, patient and welcoming, that took counter orders, calling out orders and cashiering. They take cash and Hawai'i addressed checks only. We haven't been to Olive Tree for a couple years, but the food is still amazing. The menu has not changed for at least 20 years and the freshness and taste are still spot on. We usually get the Mussels Ceviche, it is very fresh and flavorful. Also we get the Lemon Soup which is a basic soup but the taste makes you feel like your in Greece. Lastly, we get the chicken, fish or lamb Slovaki's. The homemade pita and tzaziki sauce with the fresh fillings make it so amazing, which also comes with a nice refreshing Greek salad with great dressing. I LOVE this cute café. The prices are reasonable, and the employees are super friendly. I love the falafel platter, complete with pita and hummus and a generous portion of falafel along with a side salad (the dressing is delicious, tastes homemade)! I also always get the dolma- super yummy and fresh. Their tzatziki sauce is delish and I always get two extra for dipping. They are only .92 I believe. The only reason why I don't give them a five star rating is that they have a small menu (probably because it is a small kitchen / space) and it is cash only. I would love to see them do a mezze platter of the pupus. Due to COVID, there is not seating (I thought my pic of their cute chairs was artsy). When they do have seating, it is so lovely to sit outside. Olive Tree Café is located just next door from the Kahala US Post Office, or the just next door from the Kahala McDonalds parking lot area. A few things you should know before coming here, as I saw a lot of reviews complaining about service.........so read carefully gang! 1. CASH ONLY! They do not take credit cards or debit cards. 2. Business hours are from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM........they are only open for dinner. 3. Go early (like at 5:00 PM) if you don't wanna wait too long to get your food. Garens by 6:00 PM, this place will be packed!!! All tables will be taken, and a lot of people come here to do take out. Wait time can be slow, so if you're in a rush, best to go some place else! 4. Everyday Olive Tree Café has a "daily special", but the daily special is not listed on the menu. If you want to know the special of the day, you can call to find out. My friends go so often, they kinda memorized the daily specials per day. (Yes! My friends are hardcore fans of this place!) 5. My friend's wife (Lin) & I had the Tuesday special (not listed on the menu). We ordered the Chicken Saffon, and each dish came with a Greek Salad. What can I say about the Chicken Saffon & Greek Salad? Loved the Greek Salad! The salad was very fresh, and the feta cheese was mixed into the salad dressing. What a well made salad!!! As for the Chicken Saffon, I had no idea what I was ordering, but my friend suggested I order that, as he knew my taste. The chicken was like a chicken stew & it looked tomato based, but while I was eating it, it did not taste tomatoey at all. The saffon rice had a nice fragrance, and the texture of the rice reminded me like the Jasmine rice. They don't serve any booze over here, but just next door is a Greek wine shop which I think Olive Tree Café owns. You can BYOB, and there is no cork fee at all. Overall a wonderful dining experience! My fiance is pretty picky. So when he insisted that we eat GREEK food, of all things, from the guy who despises all things green, it peaked my interest. We shared a hummus which came out first while we sipped on our wine from Whole Foods. Trust me, order the extra pita. That way you don't have to hold back when you dip. When I dip, you dip, we dip! I ordered the lamb slouvaki for my entree and my boo ordered the falafel platter. The lamb was tender and the tzatziki sauce was nice and tangy with crunches of cucumber. The falafel was not too oily and had just the right amount of crunch in the warm pita. I definitely want to try the Greek salad the next time we are here, the girl on the table next to us had it and it looked absolutely amazing. The Greek shop next to the restaurant was interesting, offering a variety of Greek wines, ingredients, and cheeses. I have no idea what most of the items were, but it was interesting no less! This is the definition of a fabulous "hole in the wall" restaurant. Located behind a McDonalds and basically in a parking lot, it is a bit random but absolutely worth the trip. I am Greek, and my Greek grandfather (who is SO very Greek in every way...) REFUSES to eat Greek food anywhere on the island except for here. He adores it. My family has been coming here since I was very little, and will be coming back for forever because I truly believe it is one of the most delicious and authentic greek restaurants I have ever been to. And I'm very picky. Their lamb souvlaki is my go to, and I always get an extra dressing for the side salad to dip it in. Their pita is soft and warm and their hummus is to die for. Had the worst service. My daughter lives to eat Greek from this place The girl that took our order was rude and a scolder. I gave her my order and she could not hear well with the plexi glass and my mask. I heard a wrong dish and told her what it should be. She repeated back the same thing the wrong order and when I told her again what I wanted she told me with a scolding.voice that I told her a lamb salad. I love this place. It has a really cool, yuppie hang out type of vibe, very laid back and relaxed (well, once you commandeer a seat that is). No corkage fee for the bottles of wine you either bring with you or buy from the shop next door and they offer refills when you buy a soda too. After all the years of coming here, the food has never disappointed us. I remember eating here when they used to serve lunch on Fridays and weekends and even before they had the seating and awning outside; it was always good. The Hummus here is the best, we always get it with an extra order of pita which is only 75 cents more. The other things we usually get are the Chicken souvlaki and the Shaorma, both are terrific and come with a small green salad. The ingredients used are always fresh and I always drool over their tomatoes, they're juicy and taste like the ones I'd grow at home. I've tried most other things on the menu like the Falafal and the Fish or Lamb souvlaki too, all good. One of the downers like others have mentioned is the seating situation. There is no order in getting a table so you just have to stand around and wait for people to leave. There are other people standing around also so you really need to position yourself strategically. We've remedied this by making sure we're here at 5pm or shortly thereafter, otherwise we avoid coming here. This one time we got into it with this bossy pregant chinese girl who thought she could bully people around. I won't go through the whole story but it ended with her yelling at her henpecked husband... "DAMN IT, JUST GO ORDER THE FOOD! THESE GUYS ARE ASSHOLES! MY DINNER'S RUINED!" Poor husband, he had a glazed look over his face like he was in shellshock, I felt sorry for him but secretly enjoyed watching her little meltdown. I used to love this Greek Cafe and would take everyone who loved Greek food as much as me. I have to say it's very sad the original owner passed away, he was a very nice man. His food was really top notch but things have drastically changed. We are here on vacation and really wanted to have another wonderful meal here that we remember having countless times before when we lived here. Went to dinner there last week with a group of 8 and my 2 yr old son spilled some water on himself and I just wanted to make him more comfortable by wiping some of it off. When I asked for some napkins, I used the words "may I have some napkins please" the woman at the register totally rolled her eyes and ignored me. I realize she thinks she's too busy to say the words "help yourself" but I was actually just asking for permission to grab a few that were on the counter rather than just taking them. Luckily a man heard me and actually walked over to hand me the napkins that were right there. I felt pretty embarrassed to say the least. The food was also a disappointment. The lamb was chewy and chicken dry. The humus and baba ganoush bland, had to take the kids to McDonald's next door because they didn't eat a thing. The decor hasn't changed at all. Two great things happened two days ago! First, I got to see my best buddy from high school. Second, I FINALLY GOT TO TRY GREEK FOOD!! When we got there, It was really crowded but we were sooooo lucky to grab a table right outside. We ordered the Tabouleh Salad, Fish Souvlaki, and Hummus with Pita Bread. Oh My Goodness!! The Hummus was delicious!! It tasted so FRESH!! I thought my Fish Souvlaki was tender and very flavorful. It was my first time trying a Tabouleh Salad so I wasn't sure what to expect. But after my first bite, my tummy was smiling. In a small bite, I could taste the fresh ingredients and the taste of the parsley and mint was very refreshing. Although we were both full, we decided to end our meal with baklava and cappuccino. The baklava was oh so sweet but I couldn't believe how quickly I finished it even after claiming that I was full :P The atmosphere was very comfy and relaxing. YES TO OLIVE TREE!! I haven't been here in awhile and what a mistake I was ever gone for that long! I've been to Greece and eaten all their wondrous food there, but this is definitely the best Greek on the Island!! We had the hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, shawarma, lamb souvlaki, and chicken souvlaki!! What a feast! Everything was very tasty!! I LOVE that they put this secret sauce on it (probably tzatziki sauce with some other magical goodness), and have it all sandwiched in the middle of their wonderful pita bread. It was very moist and flavorful, not like other falafels I've had here. The shawarma.....aaahhh the shawarma.....very flavorful and unique in how they prepare it. I do like it here! The souvlakis were flavored very well and moist too!! We devoured everything!! The salad is definitely not a Greek salad.....I've had very flavorful salads somewhere else....especially with the traditional feta!! Their pita bread is definitely delicious and I think one of the best I've had!! All in all, this is an awesome place!! And it's BYOB!! Had a Greek dinner last night. Stuffed grape leaves, pita and feta, lamb kebab in pita, greek salad and baklava. I've been here many times over the years. There's a reason this place has been around so long. I usually get their hummus, dolmadakia(stuffed grape leaves), and lamb souvlaki. I've tried other things and I have never been disappointed. The parking is very small and usually full. If I'm not getting take out, I park at Kahala by the Bank of Hawaii. It's a short walk. Otherwise you might be able to find nearby street parking. This place is BYOB only and there's a small greek shop next door that sells wines and other drinks. I think the prices are reasonable there. Very convenient location! Last time I went was during the Greek Festival, I was hoping everyone was getting their Greek fix there. But nope! This place was busy as usual(always a good sign). Luckily there were a few tables open and we got one. I had the Shaorma, and we shared an order of the mussel ceviche and dolmadakia. Everything was delicious! Too bad they aren't open for lunch! The food is good. The free BYOB (minimal charge for glasses) is awesome. The only sucky thing is that this place is so popular that it may take a while for you to get your order and finding a table in their open seating can be difficult. Wow I didn't know I already wrote a review on the Olive Tree. It was a bad review. It was before I honed in on my creative juices. The food here is really good, affordable, and consistent. BUT this review gets better. I always get the Yeagantes, mussels and now caviar spread for appetizer. I love the falafel here and if they have braised lamb shank for special, GET IT. Trust me, this review gets better. Channel your inner vulture. If you don't swarm around a table with crazy eyes you'll never get one. You must be swift as well, or someone more aggressive can steal it from you, OR you can place you open bottle of wine on the table BEFORE the guests leave. Here is where it gets good. My GF's and I were enjoying our appetizers and wine when the table next to us got up to leave. They had finished their meal and I see there is an entirely full bottle of wine there. We are like WHAT?? They just left it there??? OMG. Even the table on the opposite side was tripping out. So well like any normal wine loving alcoholic we contemplated taking it. The other table in fact was egging us on to do it. SO we did. But first since we thought this was so awesome that the wine Gods were blessing us we wanted to capture the moment. SO we all took turns passing the bottle around and taking pictures. Then it happens. A voice. A female voice behind says "Did you take our wine?" OMG OMG OMG what do we do? We DID take their wine, OMG OMG ok stay calm. I turn around and was like "OH yes, sorry we just wanted to take a picture of it" (omg please buy it, please don't go bat shit crazy on us) "Here you can have it back, we didn't drink it or anything. we are sorry" OMG OMG kill me now, this is SOOOOOO embarrassing. I place the wine bottle back on the table and she gave us a quick lecture on how that's the way you are supposed to save a table. I have gone there tons of times and never placed my OPEN bottle of alcohol on a table that was STILL occupied. I felt like it was an honest mistake. Fortunately she turned to be really nice. We went next door and bought the same bottle of wine and started up a conversation with our poor wine victim and ended cracking up over the whole situation. Thank god we didn't start drinking the wine! It could have been a throw down of some sorts and I being the crossfitter would probably have had to defend everyone. I love this place. This place is pure class I don't care what it is lacking in decor. The food and the people make this my fave! Every time it is consistently good. It's scrumptious and fresh. Everything is meticulously prepared and served with pride. I highly recommend the fish souvlakia. Whatever fish is fresh it's great. We had blue marlin. The salad dressing is spectacular. Tahini, olives, falafel - all great. Also recommend the chicken kana. So nummy. Some great spices and marinade. What's more, you are greeted with a friendly and attentive smile. That's important.
