The shop can be missed if driving by, one of those that if you are walking around easier to get to since off a busy street. When you walk in, it is dark then the main area is lit up. Plenty of seating and a bit dated. The owner is a sweet lady that is welcoming and friendly that takes your order and makes the food fresh. Order a gyro that was full of flavor and the meat was lamb beef. The meat was not dry and the bread was soft and not tough. The sauce was great and the a spicy red sauce had the right amount of heat to not distract from the flavor. Ordered a side of fries, crunchy and typical frozen rippled fries. Still, they were fried properly and not greasy. Highly recommend to stop by and try this placed. read more

Leo's Taverna - Gyro Sandwich - Greek Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

I used to visit Leo's Taverna almost weekly from 2004 to 2018 when I worked downtown. We ate there again this week. I'd have to say that the food was remarkably constant, which is both a good and bad thing. The Gyros plate is my go-to lunch here. The gyros meat is good, but the Kronos gyros pita is almost never fresh and soft tasting. I really think they should find a new source or make their own. The Tzatziki sauce had a pretty good flavor, but was a little watered down compared to how I remember it. The hummus was superb! The salad and dressing were okay. The chicken pie is made with filo dough. It tasted good, but was a little dry. The ambience hasn't really changed much. Basic tables and chairs, lots of seating, and few customers. Overall, this was a 'meh' meal for me. We live on the Big Island now, and with no Greek restaurants here, my wife has taken to making our own pita bread, Tzatziki sauce, and gyros meat [from fresh ground been and lamb]. I guess I'm a little spoiled! That said, increasing the food quality would likely return huge dividends for the restaurant. Especially now that downtown Honolulu is becoming a living space rather than just a work (and lunch) space. read more

Their food was just okay. The falafel tasted like it had been fried in very old oil, and it actually made me feel sick afterward. The moussaka was good, but it tasted more like something you'd get from a school cafeteria than an authentic Mediterranean dish. Overall, it just didn't satisfy my Mediterranean food cravings. read more

The food portions were extremely small, and I was very disappointed. The hummus was barely a spoonful, and there were only two small pieces of eggplant, with a large amount of rice making the portion appear bigger. Unfortunately, I will not be ordering from here again. read more

Leo's Taverna in downtown Honolulu is a convenient option for Greek food. I don't typically eat out for lunch as much as I used to. So this was a treat to go out and pick up food. My go to here is the Gyro Sandwich. Typically comes with generous slices of beef & lamb, lettuce, tomato, onion and tzatziki sauce. I also enjoy ordering the Spanakopita. This is a flaky dough filled with spinach and feta cheese. The restaurant remains a solid choice for Greek food downtown. I definitely recommend calling in your order ahead of time if you're like me and already know what you're going to order. read more

I'm so disappointed. I haven't come here in a long time because the Moussaka is never ready when they are open , even when I come around 12:00. I decided to come today for comfort food and was told they don't have that or my second choice. It's pretty discouraging because they used to be really good and in the ball. Amazing Gyros sandwiches. Service is friendly and quick. Nice clean space. Parking can be. Challenging as Bishop street is mostly metered but we park in Century Plaza and walk down to Leo's. It's worth the parking price. read more

To preface, my friend picked this up so I can not speak much regarding the service or how the restaurant looked like, only on how the food tasted. - Chicken Wrap: It is a basic chicken caesar wrap. Nothing special but it was good and filling. - Lamb Kabob Plate: I personally was a bit disappointed with this plate. I just felt like the amount of meat was lacking in ratio to the rice. I just feel like there's better greek food just right around the corner. However, I'd be willing to possibly give the place another shot. read more

I was horrified to chew dirt. It was obvious they do not wash their veggies. If they don't wash their veggies, that probably means they don't wash anything. There was dirt all throughout my salad. No thank you. read more

Called in an order. They said it would be ready within 15 min. They had a lot of take out orders so it took 25-30 min. We got their gyro plate, lamb kebabs and moussaka. The lamb and gyro meat had great flavor but the moussaka was meh. It needed salt and more flavor overall. It was one note and covered with tons of cheese or cream sauce. Portion sizes are decent for the price. I would definitely skip the moussaka next time. Parking is tough so I just pulled up right in front to pick up the food. Luckily there were multiple other cars pulled over as well so it was ok for the extra time I had to wait. read more

I have driven by this establishment many times but I finally had the chance to stop by for a late lunch. It was raining pretty hard that afternoon and the place was empty. We ordered the gyros and fries combo and it was very delicious! The gyros itself was very tasty. I think I needed a little more tzatziki sauce but overall I enjoyed my gyros. Service was great and the people were friendly. The setting was quiet since we were the only two dine-ins however people did stop by to do take out orders. I definitely want to return for my gyros fix! read more

I have heard through tongue and cheek about this place. It has been so long since I've had Greek food, especially living in Waipahu. It's hard to come by nowadays to find anything authentic in the central side of the island, and I guess today was that day to travel to town and visit there. So...how do I summarize what I just experienced? It was, for the most part, great. First impressions seeing the place, it looked really nice, as the atmosphere was really cool to look at. The staff did a good job with listening to what I wanted and delivered. In the past, I had my fair share of gyros from certain areas, so I decided to kick it up a notch. I decided to order a lamb souvlaki for lunch and did pair it up with a baklava to give me a decently good meal. It did cost me around $15 with the water, which I didn't mind too much. For the most part, I think it was fair. Overall, they did a really good job. I'm not 100 percent sure what I would want to eat if I went over there again, but if I ever come across a situation where I don't know what I want there, I'd definitely order their souvlaki again. read more

I'm kind of amazed Leo's Taverna has such low ratings on Yelp. During rush hour they are non-stop slammed. The establishment is surprisingly large. They have doors opening on Ft. St. Mall and Bishop. There's probably seating for 40 people but although they are busy, nobody really dines in. The best thing is they are located right in front of a loading zone on Bishop so if you have commercial plates with a LZ sticker, you can literally park right in front of their door and pop in for a quick bite. This place has been here forever, and although I once lived a block away I had never tried it. My impression of this place, and probably the reason why they don't have stellar reviews is that they are stuck in the 1990s and likely have never really changed. Their food, and presentation is pretty dated. Donar Shack a few blocks away delivers a more eye-appealing plate. Their menu is more modern and more visually appealing. However, Leo's has reasonable prices, reasonable portions, and what I ordered was tasty apart from the small side salad which was turning a little bit wilted/brown. I got the Imam Bayeldi, which was basically an eggplant stew served over rice. It was actually very good. At $15, it was one of the more expensive items on the menu which was interesting because it had no meat. Next time, I'd probably like to try the Chicken pie, which is only $10.95 and maybe a small side of something else. For the price, I feel this place delivers. Food comes out quite quick also. read more

Leo's Taverna! What can I say? By far my favorite Greek place on the island. Specifically this location. They have other locations with better parking but this location just has a different feel and atmosphere than the others. It's so welcoming when you get there, the employees greet you with a smile, phone orders are welcomed and a nice option if you're in a hurry but don't want fast food. The mom and pop feel with amazing food. I always feel full after eating here but never feel bloated. Finally trying out Leo's Taverna on Bishop street! Also its my first time trying Greek food so I was pretty excited. *My takeout order* Gyro plate- $11.93 Side orders 1x Dolmades (6pcs rice leaf wraps)- $8 1x Beef kebab skewer- $4.75ea 2x Falafel- $1.60ea 1x Baklava- $2.35ea Too bad they ran out of spanakopita, I really wanted to try it :( They said they were having issues making it so hopefully it will come back soon. My most favorite would have to be the Dolmades (Dolmates?) and beef kebab! The leaves wrapped around the zesty flavored rice was so delicious by itself! Includes tzatziki sauce and it helps enhances the flavor even more! Most recommend you guys to try this! To be honest the Falafel and Gyro plate was pretty bland but with the help of the hummus and tzatziki sauce it made all of it flavorful but I mostly recommend the tzatziki sauce since I really liked that yogurt taste, the hummus that came along with it was okay. I need to order more of the sauce since I used so much of it haha. I felt that the Baklava was nothing special and it would be cheaper to buy it somewhere else. Also ask your ranch to be on the side, its going to make your salad soggy. The reason why I gave this place 3/5 stars was because the promised wait time. I ordered my takeout around 2:50pm and they told me it will be done around 15min-20min so I told them I will come by around 3:30pm and they said it was fine. I arrived around 340pm and I mentioned the items I ordered to the cashier and I saw they were still working on it? I was hoping to grab and go but it seems to take 55 minutes to make my overall order? So around 3:45pm I was able to grab my takeout order. My biggest suggestion for those who are ordering takeout, please expect an extra 15min on top of your original pick up time so please plan accordingly if you are pressed for time. read more

Leo's is close by to me and I had not had the opportunity to eat there until just recently but I am super glad that I finally did get the chance. We used to enjoy eating here often BC (before COVID). On a recent visit I ordered the Veggie Combo plate, which on the menu is supposed to have dolmas, a small salad, babaganoush, hummus, tabbouleh, and a pita. When I opened my plate back at work, I saw that instead of tabbouleh there was a bean salad with kidney beans, peas, corn, chickpeas and a few slivers of onion! It actually had a nicely tart dressing and I was so hungry I ate it all, but would have much preferred tabbouleh. It would have been nice if they had informed me when I was ordering that they would be making this substitution. Part of the reason I was so hungry was that the pita was hard and rubbery as if it had been microwaved too long, so it was too difficult to eat more than a few bites. Everything else was as good as it used to be, including the garlicky babaganoush, so I'll probably eat here again but maybe not too soon. read more

Nothing compares to Mediterranean foods especially the Greek food. Greek foods contains healthy ingredients such as olive oil and a good amount of vegetables, grape leaves, and cilantro. I rate the last as one of my favorite garnishes. During lunch time, I usually head over to Leo's Taverna. The setting itself does not look outstanding or elaborate, but more subtle. Near the entrance patrons can see pictures of food plates. The food plates range from $6.50 - $10.00. It depends on what patrons order. I love the tabouleh salad. Prepared with chopped parsley, garlic, a bit of onion, pepper, and of course, olive oil, the salad tastes flavorful. Sometimes I order the falafel plate. I love the taste of fresh Mediterranean dolmas - stuffed grapes leaves. Delicious! When looking for a different dining experience come to Leo's Tavern during lunch or even grab an early dinner. I've used UberEats to order from this establishment at least 4 times and each time it was delicious. I usually order either the gyro plate or gyro value meal. The gyro plate comes with rice, gyro meat, hummus, salad, tzatziki sauce and pita bread. Each time I've ordered it, the taste is consistently delicious and very filling. The gyro value meal is a gyro sandwich and crinkle fries. They put some type of seasoning on the fries and those things are delicious. Nice crispy fries, I'm not a fan of crinkle cut but with that seasoning on it, I'll eat crinkle cut fries anytime from Leo's Taverna. My co-worker ordered the falafel plate and she thoroughly enjoyed them. That comes with falafel, salad, hummus, tahini sauce and pita bread. Maybe next time I'll remember to take a pic. read more

It's been ages since I've been back to Leo's, but now that I'm back in town, decided to try it again. The menu is still the same, just the prices have gone up a little, which is a given after everything else is getting expensive. Got there just before 12pm aka lunch rush and ordered the chicken kebab (2) plate and my friend got the gyro plate. Just know that if you order the kebab plate there, you'll be waiting for a while. Everyone who ordered anything else, got their food before me. So, yeah...better to call your order in or if you don't want to wait. But, finally got our food after a bit of a wait. The chicken kebab plate was still tasty as I remembered and that garlic sauce that comes with it...yumm The gyro plate was an "okay" for my friend. It was still tasty, but I think she said the meat could have been a little more juicy. I would go back for the kebab plate and I need to see if their chicken plates are still as yummy as I remember. read more

I like their food - needs a sprinkle of salt usually but overall not bad. And although not overly friendly, are normally really nice. Today was a different story. I waited over 35 minutes for them to pop my moussaka in the little microwave. They completely forgot it and were numbers passed mine, and boss lady even had the nerve to say "we're working on it" when I saw her search and only just find the ticket. They seem to forget that the kitchen is open and you can see everything. They screwed up and couldn't even own it. But during my 35+ minute wait, I observed the boss lady yelling at her workers. Maybe she will apologize later, but seeing that she couldn't even do it to me, I doubt she will. She was also grabbing food with her bare hands, then on her phone, opening the public fridge for drinks and not once did she wash her hands. I watched my plate get made without the food being touched...who knows what happens when it's actually made, but I will try not to think about it. They also charge an extra $1.35 to not get rice and get a handful of extra salad. Most places will do an even trade. So disappointing... read more

Gyros are delicious. Order and service is quick. Great spot for a quick grab and go lunch downtown.

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE Great for Greek or something different at reasonable prices downtown without needing to head into Fort Street Mall! === 2. FOOD If you're not here for Greek food, then you're not at the right place :) Gyro Value Meal ($9.32): a gyro with crinkle-cut fries and a small drink. A quick and great combo - maybe not if you're super hungry, but hits the spot and a common go-to for a lot of patrons! Gyro Plate ($9.95): think deconstructed gyro - your meat (lamb typically) served on a bed of rice instead of in a pita bread, with a side of salad and hummus. A good choice if you're hungry! Shrimp Scampi ($9.75): don't believe the picture or menu description - it's really sweet-and-sour shrimp (with shells still on) on top of rice, served with a pasta salad and kernel corn. It's good...if you can look past the sticky mess that comes from pulling off the saucy shells on the shrimp before going back to the office :) === 3. SERVICE It's fast food - and so it's good for what it is. Order and pay, then wait for your number to be called and pick up your order. Value menu orders tend to come out quickly; something not ordered often like the shrimp scampi can take much longer. === 4. ATMOSPHERE It's quaint - there are a number of four-seat tables available if you choose to eat in. Note that there is no air conditioning - only overhead fans and so without trade winds, it can still feel relatively warm and humid. The decor brings a little bit of Greece into downtown Honolulu. If you're driving here, parking would be limited to the near by 1132 Bishop building or any one of the other downtown towers. read more

I confess...I never ate Greek food before despite being born and raised here in Hawaii. I know there aren't a lot of options here, but I am glad that there were two locations (this and Doner Shack) in downtown that were advertising their food offerings on Doordash. Yesterday, I decided to just go for it and give it a try. I ordered a Gyro Value Meal and a Beef Lule Plate. When the order arrived, I was greeted with an awesome aroma of herbs and spices. Now I know this has got to be good. The Gyro Value Meal consisted of Greek Fries, Gyro Sandwich, and a yogurt dipping sauce. The sandwich was soooooo gooood with tender and well seasoned gyro meat and fresh veggies. The sauce, sorry I forgot the name as I'm texting this review on a smartphone, took everything to the next level. I ate it all even though I usually don't eat veggies in general. The Greek Fries were fully cooked and seems seasoned enough, but it had a very tiny hint of garlic. I highly recommend dipping the fries in the yogurt sauce to add flavor. I think if I were to buy again, I would stick to the gyro sandwich. Now on to the Beef Lule Plate. Each plate lunch includes salad, hummus, and a pita bread. Reading previous reviews, some have mentioned that there wasn't enough rice. I think it was just the right portion that accompanied the beef. By the way, the beef was seasoned to perfection and I enjoyed every bite of it. The hummus was amazing with its smooth and creamy texture. Oh my goodness it was soooo gooood with the pita bread. Yum! Unfortunately, I gave my side salad to another family member, so I can't review that part, but they did mention that it was fresh. I would definitely order again to try new dishes and the Baklava, but I'm not sure if the menu on doordash is consistent to the actual menu. I know that in a more recent review posted two weeks ago, there was dolmades. I would like to try them, but it's not being offered as a side and only available in a vegetarian plate lunch. read more
